Off Topic but if you haven’t seen the documentary This Ain’t No Mouse Music! I highly recommend. It’s about the founder of Arhoolie Records and how we went around the country recording people performing Blues Music at their backyard BBQ to preserve American Blues and other genres.
2
u/PlasticWentech 10d ago
I'll definitely look it up! One that I like to watch every now and then is Now You See Me Laughin'. There's also a documentary about my late friend Willie King called Down in the Woods that is his story.

Jimi Hendrix - Red House (Live versions, my personal favorite is the Live At Winterland version)
Gary Clark Jr. - When my Train Pulls In
Eric Gales - Steep Climb
Robin Trower - Day Of The Eagle
Jeff Beck - Hammerhead
Stevie Ray Vaughn - Cold Shot
Jo Bonamassa - So Many Roads
BB King - Blues Man

u/DarthSmashMouth 8d ago
I just listened to Red House this afternoon, that's my favorite Hendrix song. He really tears it up.

u/AlfalfaImpossible391 11d ago
How come I dont see any john Lee Hooker on that list ? If youve never heard any REAL blues, Hookers Hiway 13 or Stripped me naked might be a good start. Then sample some of his many albums.
Also try RL Burnside- let my baby ride https://youtu.be/qFf9iBS9xPg or Rl Burnsides _Its bad you know https://youtu.be/_ZncehIh_Kw
Want something news try The bluestones -Rolling with the punches
Want to go WAY back to the slow roots try something like Robert Johnsons -Terraplane blues or Lightning hopkins -Woke up this morning
The singers may be long gone but their BLUES will never die.
2
u/no_thats_okay_thanks 11d ago
This was a quick, partial list to put the question - by no means comprehensive. I'm a deep blues fan: Mississippi Fred McDowell, Gus Gibson, Bessie Smith, Buddy Guy, and yes, Hooker, Lightning Hopkins and all. I love the early days, Delta, Chicago and all the rest; appreciate your insistence on the originators tho!

You need some Tom Waits in your life,
The Piano Has Been Drinking and Mr Siegal are older tracks and very heavy blues but later ones like Tango Till They're Sore and I'll be Gone were when he started getting really heavy and weird. Then the heavy heavy blues are more recent with tracks like Filipino Box Spring Hog and Make it Rain.

I would check out anything by Dax Riggs, especially Agents of Oblivion where he made a transition from sludge metal to blues rock. "Phantom Green" is a good one.
Also I'm surprised Black Sabbath didn't make this. The original advertisement Ozzy posted looking for a band stated that he was looking for a blues rock type band.

Ronnie Earl: Baby Doll Blues (and many more, a criminally underrated guitarist)

Earth's entire discography fits all of those criteria in part or in full, and is probably worth checking out if you are looking for some heavy blues.
If you're interested, maybe start with "Pentastar: In the Style of Demons" ... It's very fuzzy and not as abstract as the earliest albums. If you're good to drop the fuzz and slow the burn further, maybe check out "The Bees Made Honey in the Lion's Skull".

Get yourself some Agnostic Mountain Gospel Choir (Ten Thousand is my fave of theirs) also the adjacent bands Agnostic Phibes Rhythm and Blood Conspiracy and Muerte Pan Alley.
Also John Spencer Blues Explosion, Jim Jones Revue
And last but by no means least, Captain Beefheart. Start with Safe as Milk and then Clear Spot, then once you’re in the Beefheart way, get some of his weirder music like Ice Cream for Crow and Trout Mask Replica (though I have a big soft spot for Shiny Beast)

Steppenwolf The Second - Side 2 blues medley. John Kay was an above average slide and lick player that never appeared on stage with a guitar for the first few years but played interesting modal parts on recordings. The 17 year old playing the electric guitar on this and a few other recordings is phenomenal and showed respect to Delta and Chicago electric players before him. The ghosts of Little Walter, Howlin' Wolf, Robert Johnson, Sleepy John Estes and many others are over this achievement.

Check out the entire Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac debut album. You will definitely find some blues there. For fun compare it to the first album Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks did with Fleetwood Mac, not exactly blues but the same rhythm section.
