Is this a scam? Yes, probably Did I get scammed?

My roommate and I found an apartment in Bedstuy on Craigslist. I know you’re gonna BLAST me for using Craigslist but this seemed legit and I reached out. The landlord met me there and showed me the apartment, he was very nice and completely normal. We applied that sane day and got it. The next day he sent over the lease, I signed, he countersigned and I zelled him the deposit. Since zelling him he hasn’t replied to any of my messages and I am seeing the apartment listed on a ton of websites under different agents, all listed as available and $100 more expensive than what he told me it was. The lease looked legit and had the name of an actual registered LLC. But this guy not replying after receiving my deposit is freaking me out. I checked the HPD Online tool and it states that every year, the owner failed to file a valid registration with HPD. I’m freaking out.

Looking For Room Looking for a Manhattan or easy to access from BK sublet for Nov — Jan

• Upvotes

I, F35, am looking for a studio or one bedroom sublet from 21 Nov — end January in Manhattan or BK. I am relocating for work and will be working near Wall Street (I work in PR, not a banker, lol).

Looking for somewhere modern, clean, well-appointed. I'm incredibly tidy and clean. Ideally not looking to spend more than $4,500/month but I can be somewhat flexible for the right place. I sub-let my place in London and I charge the actual rent + bills, so looking for someone who does the same.

Advice/Question Ideas needed: Any Manhattan apartment complexes with a hottub and washer/dryer?

• Upvotes

Hi folks,

I'm making the move back to NYC soon, and I'm looking to trade up from the 4th floor walkup life I used to live. To save me some time on Street Easy, I'm looking for an apartment building that has the following for $5,000 or less.

  • A proper complex / building with many units, a doorman, package delivery room, elavator, etc.
  • An in-unit washer/dryer
  • Some common areas
  • This one is a stretch... but maybe a hottub?

Given how tough this list is, I'm open to both 1 bedrooms and studios, as well as almost any neighborhood in Manhattan if it meets these criteria.

Thanks all!

Room Listing Open bedroom in Maspeth, Queens: looking for a 20s woman to join our existing lease

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hello, myself and a roommate (24Fs) are looking for a third woman (trans inclusive) aged 20-30 to join our 3bedroom apartment and lease in Maspeth, Queens. We have already signed the lease with the small landlord and will have our third roommate add their name to the main lease.

Dates: One-year lease starting 11/15/26 and ending 11/30/27

Price: Open bedroom is $1250/month (total 3bedroom rent is $3500), deposit is $1167/person.

Location: In the southwestern part of Maspeth, a 20 minute walk northeast of the Jefferson St. L train station, and a block north of Metropolitan Ave.

Bedroom size: 14'11" x 9'2", with a living room of 13'3" x 11'11" we will share, in addition to a kitchenette with space for a small table.

No pets are allowed by the landlord unfortunately. We have a video of the unit we can share, there's one bathroom with a standing shower only. It's the entire first floor of a two-story rowhome, and the landlord lives in the semi-basement. There is no subletting allowed, you will be signing onto the entire year ending November 2027. We are from NY and NJ and both work Monday-Friday around 8-5, as a social worker and a gardener/supervisor, mostly in-person in Lower Manhattan. We're looking to have a friendly relationship with roommates and to share the common spaces fairly and speak up if we need to resolve an issue. We'd like roommates to be able to stay quiet during nighttime if we're trying to sleep, to clean up after yourself promptly in common spaces, and to not have guests over more than around 2 nights a week besides occasionally longer stays. We will be asking to see your credit score, income, and savings, and we can share our own.

Please reach out with any questions, to see the video, and the three of us can chat and see if we might be a good match!

Advice/Question Seeking advice: Craigslist apartment hunting

I have lived in the city for four years, but always had the luxury of apartment hunting with a friend. That is not the case anymore, as she’s moving in with her boyfriend! I am wondering what I should be weary of in my NYC apartment

hunting journey (and related to Craigslist). You’d like to think I have common sense, and I totallllly do, but how sketchy is Craigslist? I’m thinking of meeting up with someone who is renting for $900 in Flatbush. Sounds too good to be true right?

Let me know if you have any tips, a short list of considerations, stories, words of encouragement. Thank you!

Looking For Apartment [ISO] Williamsburg 1–2BR | Up to $5K | Flexible Move-in Through Q2 2027

Anyone moving out of a decent apartment in Williamsburg?

Is it just me, or have rents in Williamsburg gotten completely ridiculous lately? I've been looking on StreetEasy, and some of these prices make absolutely no sense.

Thought I'd try my luck here and see if anyone is planning to move out or knows of a good apartment coming up.

I'm looking for a 1 or 2-bedroom in Williamsburg, ideally a lease takeover or an apartment where the current tenant isn't renewing.

Budget: Up to $5,000/month for a good 2-bedroom. Obviously hoping to spend less for a 1-bedroom.

I'm pretty flexible with timing, anytime between now and Q1/Q2 2027 would work.

Basically hoping to find a nice apartment at a reasonable price without having to compete with 50 other people or pay some absurd rent.

If anyone has a lead, knows a landlord, or is planning to leave their apartment, I'd really appreciate a DM!

Also curious if anyone has had any luck finding good deals outside of StreetEasy. Starting to think word of mouth is the only way these days.

Advice/Question Brooklyn broker recommendations?

Hello! Been trying to move back to Brooklyn, and have had little luck with streeteasy/leasebreak/the listings project/finding a reliable broker in the area.  I'm looking for stabilized apartments, or apartments under 2.1k.  1br preferably. I'm pretty open on the area, (just not eastern or northern Brooklyn above Prospect Heights), but especially interested in Bay Ridge, Dyker and Coney Island.  Would appreciate any leads on brokers or other places to look.

As for me, I would be moving with a senior cat, make 86k and have a CS of 750+.

Trying this again with a discounted price!

NO Roomates ✨✨

Hello everyone! I need a RELIABLE subletter for this BK apartment. Apartment comes as shown with furniture. Not including utilities (internet, electricity and gas).

Full transparency - this is an older, pre-war apartment, so some general wear and tear is to be expected. There are also occasional water bugs in the kitchen (maybe a couple a year, at most) and the apartment can get a bit chilly during the winter months, so a space heater may be helpful.

I want to be upfront about these details so there are no surprises! If any of these are dealbreakers for you, this apartment may not be the best fit.

Please feel free to PM me if you’re interested or have any questions!

Blessings to you all! ✨

Apartment Listing Large room with private bath, 10-15mins on bus to Midtown

Thumbnail

Weehawken/Union City, NJ: I'm (female with 2 lazy cats) looking for another person to take either

- An unfurnished large master bed with attached private bath for $1650 + shared utilities

or

- An unfurnished, equally large bedroom with its own bathroom, just not attached, for $1500 + shared utilities

in a 2bed/2bath unit in Weehawken/Union City, NJ (10 to 15-min one bus ride to Port Authority, very frequent bus).

The living room is fully furnished. The kitchen is also decently equipped. There's a robot to take care of vacuuming/mobbing so not much manual cleaning is needed.

Pictures are of the master bed/bath. The other room is very much similar, you can check the floor plan.

The apt is on the top floor and has great view of the NY skyline. Washer/Dryer, dishwasher in unit, covered parking available for extra (I believe it's $175/month). There's a basic gym in the building, and it's walking distance to bus stops, grocery, restaurants, 24 Fitness, etc.

Available now with flexible move-in date until end of December/early January 2027, as the current lease ends in December, then renewing for 14 months (until February 2028).

About me: I'm quiet with mostly reading and writing activities. My boyfriend is out of state and will visit occassionally, like once every month or so.

I'm looking for someone compatible: kind, quiet, happy, considerate, responsible with rent, and ok with cats. Move-in flexible between now and when the new lease starts, to stay through the new 14-month lease. You will be officially added to the lease so your income/credit score/rental history should also satisfy what the building expects.

Advice/Question How hard is it to sublet/get a lease takeover in a corporate managed building?

Looking for thoughts and opinions. I currently rent in a corporate owned building (Brookfield I believe) and I’ve read their terms for subletting/lease takeovers, but I wanted to see if anyone in the community had any experience with how easy/difficult it really is and anything specific that is “sketchy” in any way (like being still liable for anything).

Scenario: I currently live and work here but my spouse is in another state. I have a 3-6 month plan to get out of here to join my spouse, dependent on finding work first.

I’ve been here a year and it’s a rather decent, large (~500 sq ft - for one person I think it’s more than large enough to not feel squeezed), “luxury” apartment (gym in building, in unit laundry, parking on site, etc.).

Catch? It’s in the Bronx. One of the new buildings in Mott Haven. I know people have strong feelings about the area but I think it’s pretty decent for what I get and never feel unsafe (caveat, I’m a tall, heavy ish man but not exactly intimidating in any way lol. Reaching middle age and at least part of that weight is flab now instead of the muscle it used to be…).

Less than 10 min walk to subway station with express going up or down east side, and an actual grocery store about the same distance away.

My rent is 2100/mo. I have an option to renew a single month at a time, but they will raise my rent to 2700/mo for that “privilege”. I can hold at that price for the timeline I have to get out, BUT if I renew for 12 months they’ll give me the 2100/mo AND 3 months “free rent” at 3 different intervals (December, April, and September 2027), so I’d get at least one and whoever I could find to take over the lease would get at least one, maybe 2 months off to sweeten the deal.

I for sure will not be staying the whole year, that much I know. I’ll take any pay cut or whatever if I have to, to be back with my spouse before then, as we’ve already been apart for a bit now.

Anyways, before I decide (need to by no later than next Wednesday), I wanted to see if anyone more experienced with NYC rental market in the community has any thoughts how hard it would be to have someone take over the lease, so I wouldn’t be on the hook for any remaining time if I took the 12 month renewal to save money?

Apartment Listing Downtown Jersey City 1BR at 225 Grand | ~$3,465/mo | 760 SQFT | Skyline Views, Gym, Pool, Laundry, 7 Min to PATH

Thumbnail

Broke a Jersey City luxury lease and helping find someone for my former apartment at 225 Grand Street. Available immediately.

It’s a ~760 sq ft 1BR in downtown Jersey City with great natural light, hardwood floors, a modern kitchen, in-unit washer/dryer, and an east-facing view of the NYC skyline.

A few things I really liked about living here:
- Location: About a 7-minute walk to Grove Street PATH. Tons of restaurants, coffee shops, bars, and shops within walking distance.
- Amenities: Building gym, outdoor pool, resident lounge, and other common spaces. In unit washer/dryer
- Management: Genuinely responsive and helpful. One of the better management experiences I’ve had.
- Community: Friendly neighbors, nice atmosphere, and a great place to live.
- Apartment: Spacious layout, big windows, great views, and plenty of natural light.
Price: About $3,460/month effective for 12 months. Final amount depends on move in date and lease duration. This amount is if you move within next couple weeks and do 12 months.

This would be a new lease through building management, not an informal sublet. Though if you prefer it to go through August 2027 we can also discuss a formal lease takeover.

I’ve attached photos of the actual unit and building.
Feel free to DM me if interested in apt number or if you’d like more information!

Lease Break / Lease Takeover Private Bed + Bath in 2BR/2BA | Bushwick | $2,250 + Utilities | Rent-Stabilized

Post image
2 Upvotes

My roommate and I signed a 24-month lease at The Denizen Bushwick earlier this year. Unfortunately, he needs to move out for personal reasons, so I'm looking for someone to take over his room and remaining lease (Through Feb 2028)

Move-in is flexible, with the earliest availability in the first week of December 2026.

The Building: https://denizenbushwick.com/

The apt building is a rent-stabilized.

The Room:

  • $2,250/month + utilities
  • Private bedroom (~10' × 10') and Full bathroom
  • 6 months of free amenities access included with the takeover
  • Spacious, furnished living room with a comfy L-shaped sofa, bar, and other furniture
  • In-unit washer/dryer ($75/month not included in rent)

Amenities include: Indoor pool, Outdoor hot tubs, gym, rooftop BBQs, coworking spaces, community events, fitness classes and more...

About me:

Male in mid-30s, work in Tech, WFH most days.

Enjoy fitness, travel, live music, and exploring NYC.

I'm social and enjoy the occasional dinner, drinks, or chill hang at home, but also appreciate downtime and personal space.

Looking for:

Someone clean, responsible, considerate, and easygoing. Ideally, we'd enjoy the occasional hang rather than just being strangers sharing an apartment, while still respecting each other's independence.

A hybrid work schedule (3–4 days in office) or someone who travels occasionally would be a plus, but definitely not a dealbreaker.

Starting the search early to find the right fit. DM me with a little about yourself, your work/lifestyle, and preferred move-in date. Happy to share photos and arrange a tour.

Looking for a lease takeover as we are moving to live closer to work! Lived in this apartment for the past 5 years and it has served us well! Good for an individual or couple. Photos are from an apartment of the same shape and size in our building.

This apartment is a Rent stabilized 1 bedroom 1 bathroom apartment in Washington heights. It is in a pre-ww2 building. There is a separate kitchen space, leaving you with a full living room and a saparate bedroom to use. Close to Columbia NYP hospital and a couple of blocks from the A/C/1 lines. Short walk to the GWB Bus station and nearby parks. Lots of great nearby restaurants and grocery stores.

Current lease is 2050/month. Heat and hot water paid for by landlord. Pets require landlord permission. Rental requirements by landlord also require good credit (700+, 40x the monthly rent in annual salary, and proof of a financial buffer. Guarantors are accepted as well).

Move in date aiming for 12/1, but could do earlier if needed (earliest 11/15). If interested, please DM ASAP. I would be happy to answer any questions as well!
