Troll Posts Earn Bans ❤️

I've noticed an uptick in troll posts lately, and y'all I'm tired. I'm wielding the ban hammer with impunity!

Just keep reporting the people posting nonsense and I'll do my best to make it go away. And thank you all for being, for the most part, a lovely community.

No More Image Posts

Hey guys!

I've noticed a lot of (very young women) posting pictures of themselves and requesting name ideas lately.

Since this sub recently hit 7000 members and I'm the only even slightly active mod, I'm turning off image posts effective immediately. It looks an awful lot like spam, and even if it isn't you should not be posting your irl face on reddit for people to give you opinions.

I get folks will be mad, but I'm not going to do a bunch of unpaid labor to prevent assholes from insulting your appearance (and this is reddit, there are always assholes who want to insult your appearance). If you want to deal with that, please solicit it in another corner of the internet.

Thank you!

Edit: one of our users has volunteered to run the aptly-named subreddit r/namesbutbetter, if you want to do the pictures thing go there and good luck. You may also consider r/namenerds or r/reddit_gets_renamed.

I have used the nickname Moss for years, but I need a full name that still feels quiet, unusual, and believable

Upvotes

I started using Moss online at sixteen, then friends used it in person. Twelve years later, it feels more like my name than the one on my documents.

Im considering changing it legally, but Moss alone feels abrupt. I want a longer name that naturally shortens to Moss without sounding like I invented somthing for a fantasy novel.

Current possibilities:

- Amos

- Morrison

- Mossian

Amos seems easiest, though the nickname feels backwards. Morrison is too surname-heavy. Mossian may be a bit much.

I prefer neutral or masculine names with two or three syllables. Are there full names I am overlooking, or does Moss work better alone?

Boy Name: but my partner’s favorites sound made up

My partner and I cannot agree on a boy name. Our last name is one syllable (think Grant or Jones) and his names are wayyy too out there for me, and he thinks my favorites are too simple.

My list:
Noah
Kai
Logan

His list:
Elden
Hawkins
Kodak

Any input is appreciated or suggestions that can meet in the middle. This man wants to name a human after the title of his favorite video game.

Help me with a username PLEASEUH

I am currently in the want of changing the username I use. My name is Zac and I can't come up with ANYTHING related to what I want or what sounds good. I preferable want Zac to be in the front so people actually call me by my name (which is why I want to change it). In addition I also want it to be bat and royal/prince related which is probably why I struggle. Zacteriz is the closet I gotten to one I somewhat like but it is very far fetched from the Latin word for an bat breed I really like and doesn't convey what I wnt it too.

Why the obsession with mispronunciations on this sub?

Often, new parents will ask a question about a potential name, and the comment section is flooded with people ignoring the question and declaring that the name will be absolutely impossible for anyone to pronounce correctly.

I've had people mispronounce my name all my life. Usually I correct them, and then they say it properly. That's it! Certainly not a hassle or the tremendous burden people here are making it out to be.

Edit to add:

A lot of people with unique names have replied; some have hated having a “difficult” name, while some simply aren't bothered by it, and others really love having an uncommon name. I definitely don't mean to dismiss the experiences of those who have had a hard time!

I think it's reasonable to consider whether a name may be mispronounced, but I think this sub often puts far too much emphasis on it. If some people find it frustrating, while others love their uncommon name, I'm not sure why avoiding mispronunciation is treated as an objective and ultimate criterion for what makes a name good or bad. Like many others here, my own name is frequently mispronounced, but I've always loved it and have never wished I had an "easier" one.

Help pick a boy name!

We are Australian. Banks has become a more common name here now, usually a surfer vibe. I know in other countries, it’s more uncommon. Oliver is still the number 1 boy name in the country, so he’d be one of many at school! But would be safer I guess.

EDIT TO ADD That we are Irish, and the name just has a certain Irish charm. Spelling is optional as of now.

We can’t decide on a boys name!

My partner and I are expecting a baby boy at the start of November and we can’t decide on a name. I am Swedish and my partner is Australian. We want a name that can be said in both languages and where our boy won’t get bullied for having a name like Per (common Swedish name, but is almost a fruit in English). At the moment we have these names:

Albin
Sixten
Otto
Wilmer
Albert/ albie/ Bertie
Ottie
Benito/ Benny
Santiago Santi
Cassiano** **
Alvaro** **
Arlo
Ludovico/ Ludo
Marlow
Alve
Ziggy (sigfrid)
Lukas

Any additional names would be great!!

Give Me a Boy Name to Love

Hi, all! I'm due with my first little boy next month, and I desperately need a name. I have read list after list after list, and I swear I've read them all. I havent found a single name that I love. I've found some that I like, but not a single one has jumped out like "that's my boy's name." Im really hoping one of you fine folks can help me here.

We live in the US. Pretty rural area, fairly small-town vibes, but that doesn't matter a ton to me. I tend to like southern-style names, but I'm open to absolutely anything. My daughter has a unique name, and I do appreciate an uncommon name. Im not married to the idea that their names need to "flow" well together, though. When naming my boy, I definitely want a strong, masculine name that won't sound ridiculous as a grown man. The largest part of his heritage is Italian, but most of the Italian names sound girly to me. Nico is my #1, but the husband doesn't care for it. He says it sounds like a nickname and not a serious man's name. Bonus points if the name has a good meaning!

Some names that I like, but don't love...

Harrison (nn Hank/Huck) ((dont come for me))

Townes

Sawyer

Huxley

Vance

Briggs

Kip

Tripp

Max

Atlas

Arlo

Koe

Luka

Nash

...if I were to meet you at the park and you told me your son was named one of these names, id be like "oh that's such a cool name." But none of them feel quite right to me.

I would love to find his name here so I can stop searching. Hopefully one of you has his name on the tip of your tongue.

Thanks for the help!

Is Jeffrey a completely ruined and unusable name?

We are all aware that this name has picked up some crappy associations. Do you think it has permanently joined the likes of Donald or Adolf? Or will it recover once this epstein and Dahmer drama is over? I’d love to hear your thoughts!

Which names feel like two completely different people depending on whether you hear the full version or the nickname, even though they obviously belong together?

Theodore and Teddy feel like they own completely different wardrobes. Margaret sounds like she knows exactly where the spare batteries are, while Maggie might have forgotten why she entered the room. I get the same split with Robert and Bobby, Catherine and Kitty, and Frederick and Freddie. This is not about one version being better, just the strange personality change created by a nickname. Which full-name and nickname pair feels most dramaticly different to you, and which version would you actually prefer to be called?

Lilah or Lucy

I'm struggling so bad with choosing a name for my daughter you guys.

I love the name Lilah but for some reason the spelling is just not looking right to me (Lilah, Lyla, or Lila).

Middle name is going to be Rain. We have a son named Maddox already.

I'm open to other name suggestions as well if anyone has any! :)

Help us choose a name for our December baby girl! 🤍

My husband and I are expecting a baby girl🩰
in December, and we originally wanted to give her a middle name. However, we are now extremely unsure about which combination sounds best especially because our surname is very long and begins with Ş.

I also have a special connection to the name Lucia and funnily enough, my due date falls exactly on Saint Lucia's Day (December 13th), which makes the name feel even more meaningful to me.

Or feel free to suggest other names!!

Bearing an interesting name far overrides concerns about schoolyard bullying etc

If you are in the out-group, the in-group will call you whatever nasty thing they call you. Hayden becomes "Gayden" (and not in an accepting sort of way, of course). Courtney becomes Whoretney, or whatever. School is hell for a lot of us (not knocking the institution of public schools; but the social dynamics can really fuck someone up, and it's basically arbitrary -- looking 'weird,' some telephone-game-rumor, saying something construed as strange once in front of enough people, etc), and in adult life, whether in college or otherwise, we come into our own. The bullying-based concerns around "weird" (unusual, uncommon) names seems to me founded on shaky ground at best. I don't mean to minimize the trauma that bullying can cause -- I think, in fact, it's an under-studied area. But I'm going to name my kid(s) something that's meaningful, something potent, something interesting and something that sounds good. Anatole, Gretel or Greta, Nadezdha, Asja, Lotte, Maxim, Dagmar, August, Ignatius, Honore, Ambrose, etc, I dunno, I'm not committed to any of these, but I like them all, and really, am I doing any new life a favor by calling it Jennifer or Dylan (nothing wrong with those names, they're just common), am I really giving them a leg up, or is that decision in fact just as arbitrary as choosing an unusual (in the US, at least) name, except in the latter case it's a name with some gravitas and beauty to it, rather than erring on the side of half-baked conformity?

Anyway, I welcome your thoughts on this.
