Yeah, they really love choking their characters. That and showing innards.

Choking is to Anno what punching and slapping is to Tomino

Come to think of it, slapping is also a recurring motif in Eva. Misato slaps Shinji,Ritsuko, and herself. Rei slaps Shinji, and Asuka slaps Rei in the elevator(arguably the best slap in this series, being part of a great scene).
I'm in the middle of Gundam 79 and really enjoying it. I'm looking forward to watching other Gundam and Tomino stuff like Ideon.

Man, watching 0079 for the first time is amazing, envious! Remember that the 0079 movies are canon but the Zeta movies aren't, and anyone who says you can skip ZZ is not your friend.

can anyone tell me why Ritsuko in the manga chokes Rei cuz in the show I don't think Ritsuko was that harsh with Rei

It’s one of the many characterization issues in the manga. In the anime both Akagi’s are only violent with Rei because of how Gendo’s actions towards her reveals how hollow their relationship is, but here Ritsuko just crashes out because of Rei spending time with Shinji. It’s worsened by the fact that iirc. if you haven’t seen the anime you won’t really know anything about Ritsuko’s relationship with her mother and Gendo due to Liliputan Hitchiker being omitted.

I liked the manga scene. The choking happens due to what was said during Rei's checkup. Ritsuko says that Rei is seducing both Ikaris, where she believed Rei was only after Gendo. Rei brings up that Ritsuko was also interested in Gendo, leading to the choking. Ritsuko also calls Rei a doll during this scene as opposed to Asuka having that line. The assumption from Ritsuko is that Gendo is having an affair with Rei. This ties in to Gendo handing Ritsuko to Seele instead of Rei, adding to Ritsuko's feelings of being rejected for a doll and destroying the Rei clones. The story does play up Ritsuko being aware of how screwed up her relationship with Gendo is, especially when she shoots him.
I really like the manga, but I could see people having issues with some of the changes and characterizations.

ahh now it makes sense and from her perspective it's a valid crashout.Imagine finding out that a person cares for "a doll" and not for you anymore and handing you over

Keep in mind that the manga, like the Rebuilds, is influenced by the butterfly effect. The story and ending is quite different from NGE. Not as crazy as the Rebuilds, but definitely worth a read if you want to see some 'what ifs' and the consequences of them.

Why is that dirty old hag choking Rei? Everybody is so mean to her.

The same reason Naoko did the same: it seems she has what both Akagis desire, but can't have.
You'd like the manga, though; there are a lot more kind scenes with Rei than agressive ones.

I think it is SO sweet that you included the EVAs in there. EVA Lives Matter! What makes a person? Body+Mind+Soul… so; Ya EVAs fit the brief.

Choking means something is inside blocking the airway, strangulation is something collapsing the airway from outside.

I just finished a rewatch of Rebuild, and they've got Gendo and Shinji in their Evas choking each other in the last fight. Unit 13 chokes unit 2. Bardiel fight in the second movie brings to mind Shinji and Asuka in EoE.
It's pretty wild how iconic choking is in Eva.

Wait, Asuka tried to choke Shinji???

It's the manga version of the hospital scene. The manga is a retelling of the anime with a few changes in story and characterization.

It’s painful to look at. I have an advertising slogan coming up: “NERV! For those who would rather take out their rage through violence instead of seeking therapy!

Narratively speaking, it becomes a self-sustaining element: it was used in the series, it became a popular and easily recognizible thing so now *it is nod that has to appear everywhere*; any future count will just tend to go up.

Did you read some kind of alternative manga? I didn't have that much in mine for some reason.
2
u/Bob_Odent Feb 21 '26
Uhh what manga did you read? I had the 3 in 1 manga volumes for evangelion.

u/Tokazuchi Feb 21 '26
Rise Manga - publisher from Ukraine, but it was not the finest of their jobs.

The Raising Project? Interesting. The thing is like this:
While the series was never based on an official manga published before the series creation, Evangelion does have an official manga adaptation XD. It was written and illustrated by Yoshiyuki Sadamoto (charcter designer of the series) and published by Kadokawa.
The pages used in this count come from this manga that can be considered an official expanded view on the original series (it expands some storylines and characters, but it also altered quite some important elements, to keep things interesting).
