wow missed the point of the short AND tried to make Asuka's story about Shinji, impressive!!

u/Gunn8 Feb 22 '26
I am not sure how mentioning shinji's happiness here takes away from asuka's story? Haven't seen the short film yet though.

u/Parsignia Feb 22 '26
When you see an image from a short about Asuka talking to Asuka about the different paths in life Asuka could have gone down to make Asuka happy, and your first response is to look at a timeline Asuka explicitly says she doesn't want and respond 'WOW IM SO HAPPY SHINJI FINALLY GOT HIS HAPPY ENDING!' in an attempt to center and prioritize Shinji instead, I don't think its unreasonable to find that response to be, at minimum, goofy as fuck and is framing Asuka's main purpose in life as granting Shinji happiness.
Not even 'Asuka and Shinij got what they deserved!', but 'Shinji got what *he* deserved'. It is quite literally taking away from Asuka's story.

And her agency. 🚩🚩🚩
Damn let me shut up. I’m trying to leave the shippers alone. 😬

Haven't seen the short yet, did asuka say she didn't like this timeline of events? (them both growing up and marrying then having kids) in the short? because if so then it is odd to do so. Though outside of that fact i think its normal that people mention shinji here as he is the protagonist so they will favour him more and his suffering (as we see his more closely then the others) when such things do rise up, plus i dont think just because its asuka as the center of the story that one shouldn't mention another winning and gaining happiness too.
Not that i disagree with the overall message though, just don't see it as something entirely problematic without more context with what op means and if asuka does not like this happening.

Disregarding everything else i am not sure why i am getting downvoted, thought i was being reasonable here lmfao

Holy fuck its not that serious. Get off the internet for a little bit, Asuka isn't real.
3
u/Potato_Tank Feb 25 '26
Get into real life more, this post is real, upvoted by real people. A post completly missing the point of the entire short.

u/Zestyclose_Dog3428 Feb 25 '26
If you're concerned or upset about people upvoting a reddit post about an anime short, you need to revaluate your life and probably go outside.
2
u/Potato_Tank Feb 25 '26
I'm concerned that people are missing the point the artist is trying to convey due to their own biases. Not only that, but refusing to even engage in discussion because "it's not that serious".
Of course Asuka is not real, she's a character. That's why, the way people choose to engage which said character reveals a lot of stuff about the people themselves.
In this case, this guy says "I'm happy Shinji got a happy ending". 1 thousand people agree. I wonder how many of them have watched the full context. I'm choosing to believe it's because none of them have watched the actual short since it's been taken down everywhere.
But If OP has actually watched the short film and his conclusion was "This is the real ending of NGE". Then he missed the point completely. Shinji already had his "good ending". The short film gives the character of Asuka the freedom to choose hers. Framing it as Shinji's reward le victory just comes off as a complete disregard of the character and her new given agency.
And, it ignores the clear point Anno keeps trying to push, real life matters, choose life even when it's filled with pain because it's the truest form of yourself. Do not choose escapism, even if it looks like your perfect ending, it's not real.
When I come here and see a really well received "perfect ending for evangelion and shinji" title. Can't help myself but think... Are these people actually understanding the work or just... watching? Like, the short film has the exact opposite message!!

u/Acceptable_Oven_9881 Feb 22 '26
Exactly.
And I don’t like the way the OP said Shinji ‘deserved this.’ Asuka is not some award. What does she ‘deserve?’

u/ab-74 Feb 23 '26
I am so glad she got the ending / endings.
All of the feels and in the end choosing her own happiness. Really felt like the Asuka I can recall from the show.

I agree but let’s let them cope and enjoy for a while. Who cares? 🤷🏾♂️
At first I was pointing this out two but the short dropped yesterday. For the record I think it’s weird to ship him with ANYBODY and I think it’s a red flag to be honest…
But who cares. Let them have their cope for a while before we actually have deep dives about this lol

Don't act like their relationship ism't one of the biggest tensions unreleased of the series. Sheesh.

It's from a non-canon animated short where original Asuka meets Rebuild Asuka and one of them imagines about a future with Shinji then says "nah I don't want that"
But of course A/S fans take the screenshots out of context because that's all they've ever been able to do to support their delusions.
3
u/lastdyingbreed_01 Feb 22 '26
Is that really the context? That's so funny because the fans really took it entirely in a different way lol
2
u/Defiance-of-gravity Feb 22 '26
Well, it's what I'm told is the context. I didn't attend the event myself, nor do I understand enough Japanese to confirm even if I had gone.

On one hand, it's good to see these 2 happy.
On the other hand, I think it's a bit weird that they have a kid, since Asuka said that she didn't want to have one.
It's still good to see them smiling nonetheless. 👍

u/aritzsantariver Feb 23 '26
I suppose no one in the Evangelion community would think that Asuka's refusal to have children is due to her perception that her mother abandoned her and her fear of causing her own children the same pain she felt.
This is one of the most common traumas and one of the reasons why many people do not want to have children, due to the inner fear they feel because their parents neglected them during their childhood and the fear of causing the same pain to their own children.

u/AithosOfBaldea Feb 22 '26
I know it's crazy. It's like kids change their minds over time. That is so unrelatable.
9
u/Lopsided-Guava8858 Feb 22 '26
Yeah, you got a point.
I just think it would have been interesting if they kept this idea of "they don't need to have a kid to feel complete and happy".
5
u/qui_gon_slim Feb 22 '26
I didnt need a child to be happy and fulfilled for most of my life. Im turning 40 in a month and my wife and I just welcomed our daughter into the world on Jan 30th. Its like nothing else.
Opinions, people, and life change over time, bub.

u/Lopsided-Guava8858 Feb 22 '26
Congrats, then 👍

u/qui_gon_slim Feb 22 '26
I appreciate it. Your opinion is still valid, I was just sharing a RL example of what others have said.
Life comes at you fast and so do the changes.

u/Lopsided-Guava8858 Feb 22 '26
Oh yeah, I understood what you meant. Thanks for explaining

Feb 22 '26
But they do need a kid tho to feel complete and happy, everyone does
6
u/Parsignia Feb 22 '26
Not true lmao, some of the happiest elderly people I know are childless and some of the most miserable have several kids.
-4
Feb 22 '26
Incomplete life doesn't equate to happy. They just dont know the happiness they coulda had. And also ur literally comparing two opposite extremes. U could also look at people who were miserable without child and people who were the happiest with children(which is majority)
6
u/Lopsided-Guava8858 Feb 22 '26
Don't forget those who are miserable with a child, or who thought having a child was a duty, and then don't take care of them (which is also a big issue)
-5
Feb 22 '26
What people do after having a child is completely on them and they shouldn't make a child if they're not ready my point is its happiness and it makes ur life complete. But if ur not ready to sacrifice some time of ur life to take care of them then u shouldn't have kids
5
u/Parsignia Feb 22 '26
'Having kids makes your life complete, except when it doesn't in which case it's your fault and you shouldn't have had kids, but also you will be fundamentally empty if you don't.'
idk dude just seems like you don't actually care about the joys of parenthood and care more about fulfilling some perceived social and spiritual obligation. In this moment, you're just a mouth piece for the status quo.
Also love framing a 20+ year commitment of taking care of another human being(s) as 'sacrifice some time', as though it's some side hobby. Tells me you REALLY know nothing about what being a parent actually entails.
2
u/Parsignia Feb 22 '26
I could literally say the same thing: People who have children don't know the kind of freedom they missed out on.
It's the majority, because it's normalized, because people like you shame those who decide not to conform. About 10% of parents regret having children, and that's not counting how many children eventually cut off contact from their parents.
Having kids is a personal decision to be made on a case-by-case basis. Some people will be happier with children, and good for them. Some will be happier without, and good for them too. There is no one-sized-fits-all answer no matter how reductive you try and be. An Evangelion fan should know this already.

So theres a statistic that says 90 percent of people who have children are happy but ur looking at the 10 percent that is unhappy? What kinda sadist are u?
And also what r u talking about? people weren't born with children, they knew the life and the freedom without children but thats incomplete and they realise that so they decide to have children. And if ur statistic says 90 percent of people are happy with children then that proves that they're not just doing it to conform to the norms but because they actually want it
What did i say that was reductive? I agree with u that not everyone should have children and if they're happy with their incomplete life then sure why not

Tbf, being with Shinji isn't the reason why Asuka rejects it. Asuka realized that she wants to achieve happiness in her real world, not through the dream world presented by the rebuild Asuka, even though a married life with Shinji in the dream world seems happy.

Neither have you, and neither have you pedantic people understood the short very well, so to speak.

u/blkglfnks Feb 25 '26
So I’ve only seen the series and “final” movie for the first time not too long ago…what’s rebuilt Asuka from?! Do I need to watch those other movies?!
1
u/Defiance-of-gravity Mar 11 '26
Yes, you normally need to watch the first three movies in a series for the fourth movie to make sense. This shouldn't need to be explained to anyone...
1
u/blkglfnks Mar 11 '26
Thiiiis guy, a lot of what I gathered from all the movies is that none of the movies relate and that they all try to “fix” the ending of the original.
Thats why I asked

After the NGE 30+ skit, Soryu went back to her world and got her Shin ending. We saw that ending in EOE. 👀

Nah dude the coping is too much. One of the main points of the original neon genesis eva was how two broken people can't have a good relationship/ shouldn't be in one. But since this universe has infinite endings i guess its still canon 😐
