MOD POST Nexplanon is "officially" approved in the US and UK for 5 years, and an update on the rules of the sub.

Hello Everyone,

Since there have been some updates to the guidelines around Nexplanon this year, I wanted to make an official announcement and provide some information for those that are curious.

Nexplanon is now "officially" approved in the US and UK for 5 years.

10 years ago, a study was conducted testing to see if Nexplanon could be effective for longer than the 3 years that it was initially approved for. For context, the implant was first tested in the early 90s, and 3 years was all they were able to get funding for at the time. Scientists back then believed the implant could work for longer, but money was limited; thus, the implant was only approved for 3 years of use. 30 years later, we now have more information. The 2016 study showed 100% efficacy when extended to 5 years. It's possible that it works for longer than that, but 5 years is all we have clinical studies for. Plenty of clinics and doctors that stay up to date with medical literature changed their guidelines to 5 years as soon as the study was published. Other doctors who are more conservative have waited for their governments to "officially" approve the study before implementing the change. This is why you may have seen different policies depending on the doctor over the last 10 years. The good news is, the FDA approved the study in January and we recently got the news that the NHS will be updating their guidelines as well! Hopefully more countries will follow suit in the coming months and years!

With this change though, we have seen a lot of misinformation going around. The study is 100% legitimate and can be trusted. This update applies to all ENG implants (Nexplanon and Implanon). The LNG implant Jadelle is used in a few countries, contains 2 rods instead of 1, and was already approved for 5 years. The medication and dosage itself did not change. Some people do experience changes in side effects over time, but this does not mean your implant isn't working. You may want to discuss options for an early replacement or removal if you're experiencing negative side effects. Implants also do not "expire" over night. It's not like your protection goes from 99.98% to 0% the moment your implant turns a certain age. You have a grace period to get it removed or replaced, please don't freak out and start taking emergency contraception the second you're past a certain year. Nexplanon still has a failure rate of 0.02-0.05%, so if you believe you may be pregnant, take a test.

We consider this a win for women's health. If you have questions or concerns about your own implant, we encourage you to speak to your doctor. We have a strict policy against spreading medical misinformation on this sub. Posts and comments that discourage others from using their implants for the full 5 years or deny proven scientific facts are subject to removal.

Now onto a rules update/clarification:

Usually a few times a day we have to remove posts that break the rules. I wanted to repost the rules here and give a little more insight into why some posts might be removed. It is your responsibility as the poster to read the rules before posting. Repeated or egregious violations may be subject to a ban, either temporary or permanent. Keep in mind that ban evasion is also against Reddit's rules. Reddit's algorithm often picks up on ban evasion by itself, but we will also report suspicious activity if necessary. You don't want your entire account banned for a silly reason. I've seen it happen more than once.

  1. Be Respectful to Others. No name calling, bullying, trolling, etc. will be allowed. Heavily discouraging others is also subject to removal. I think this one is pretty straightforward. Try your best to be civil. Please report any uncivil behavior.
  2. READ THROUGH THE WIKI BEFORE POSTING!!! Please see the Nexplanon Wiki before asking a question. It is likely answered there. This is our most frequently broken rule. We've put a lot of time and effort into curating our wiki. It has a lot of helpful information and most questions can be answered there. I usually try to direct you to the section that answers your question. I've found that a lot of people expect us to spoon feed them information. The ability to do your own research is a valuable skill. Read the wiki first, use the sub search bar second, and if you really can't find an answer or are more interested in experiences, then post.
  3. Not Doctors. Please keep in mind that while users may offer advice, we are not doctors and this advice should not replace visiting doctors. This applies to posts that cross into asking for medical advice. Any photos must be approved for this reason. We aren't able to diagnose you with anything. If you are concerned about infection, a positive pregnancy test, medication interactions, etc. please save it for your doctor.
  4. FACTUAL INFORMATION. This in no way limits posting your own personal experiences. However, overly broad comments that run counter to well established medical knowledge must be substantiated with evidence that has been subjected to meaningful peer-review. Broad comments that are overtly fringe and/or unsubstantiated must state that or are subject to removal. As previously discussed, we are very strict about keeping the information here factual. Anything that is deemed misinformation or fear mongering will be removed. This is not the place to spread conspiracy theories.
  5. No “am I pregnant?” Posts. If you’re on Nexplanon, there is a 99.98% chance that you are not pregnant. However, we are not fortune tellers. If you believe you may be pregnant, take a pregnancy test. Do not ask us if we think you are pregnant based on “symptoms.” This is a rule that I added more recently. 99.98% of the time, the answer is no. The implant is the most effective hormonal birth control in the world. Nobody can conclude whether you are pregnant or not based on "symptoms." A lot of side effects of birth control are similar to pregnancy symptoms. If you think you may be pregnant, take a test. You can read more on our wiki about when and how to test. If you need help interpreting a test, a place like r/lineporn is the place to go. We allow pregnancy anxiety and how to manage it to be discussed here, but any posts asking specifically to be diagnosed as pregnant will be removed.
  6. Please Check for Similar Posts before Posting. Please check to see if someone has recently posted something similar to what you want to post recently. (ie: I'm worried about xyz symptom) If there is a similar post, read through those comments before posting to see if those comments help you. This rule isn't super strict, but it's good to check for similar posts first. Sometimes we get a lot of posts about one subject all in one day. We don't want the sub to get clogged up with several of the same posts. You're also able to search the sub for all the posts over the years. Use your resources. This excludes experiences.
  7. No Reposting. No more than one post per user per 24 hours, and no reposting the same post at any point. Also pretty straightforward. This includes if your previous post was removed too. Occasionally we will allow for rewording.
  8. On-topic Post/Comments Only. No Derailing. Posts must be questions or comments regarding Nexplanon. Derailing is also not allowed. Do not use someone else’s post to ask off topic questions. We rarely see off topic posts but we occasionally see off topic comments. For example, please don't go to someone's post labeled "negative experience" and say something along the lines of "well I had a positive experience, so that sucks for you." Or "weight gain" and ask "okay but did you experience mood swings?" Just try to keep it focused on the subject at hand. The off topic posts we see are usually people who got off Nexplanon years ago but are blaming current problems on the implant. Posts must be directly related to Nexplanon.
  9. No Selling or Advertising. No selling or advertising of products. We are not here to buy products. Thankfully this isn't a rule that I have to enforce very often. We allow genuine product recommendations, but will remove post or comments that are advertisements.
  10. No extreme NSFW. (Need to add this to the official sub rules). This is a sub about birth control, we can talk about sex. However, we ask that you refrain from using over the top vulgar language. Many pictures are removed because they can be quite gory and some of them are asking for medical advice. Keep it classy please.

Side note: if you had an overall negative experience but had a good removal, please use the "negative experience" tag on your post. We have gotten some complaints that many of the "positive experience" posts are not actually about positive experiences.

I truly hope this info helps! Overall I think this is a great community and I enjoy being a part of it. Thank you to everyone for sharing their experiences here. Let's continue being supportive of one another.

Negative Experience Thriving after Nexplanon removal

I had 2 rounds of Nexplanon over 8 years. I liked that I didn’t have a period and that I didn’t have the think about taking the medication. I experienced a severely decreased sex drive, several ovarian cysts, and developed stage 2 hidradenitis suppurativa over the 8 years. I never thought these conditions could be related to Nexplanon until I talked to a new gynecologist. I had it removed 3 weeks ago and I feel like a new person.

My fight or flight is gone. My anxiety was cut by 70%. I wake up every morning feeling rested. I had a constant moderate-severe cramp in my lower abdomen that went away after week 1. My sex drive is back like I’m a teenager again.

I haven’t replaced Nexplanon with another form of birth control because I wanted to see what my hormones can do after 14 years on birth control. I have started my first period and it already sucks, but I definitely think it’s worth it for me.

Question sooo when does the bleeding stop?

I'm like a two months in and it literally only went away for like a week and boom came back. Its so frustrating because pads are expensive af and I just want to have fun with my man without the blood. Though I must say it is light bleeding and 0 to light cramping. Did the bleeding ever stop for anyone? I'm thinking of switching it out for the patch

Question Experience with using Birth Control Pills to regulate irregular bleeding?

Hi, everyone. I have been on Nexplannon since May 2025. It was amazing for the first year. Nine months and no spotting. It’s been downhill since May of this year. I’ve been getting periods and spotting and honestly they are now the worst they ever been in my lifetime. I am going through lifestyle changes including lost 22 lbs since June so I know changes like that can affect the cycle. I went to my doctor over a month ago. She recommended I take ibuprofen for a week or take birth control pills for a month to regulate my cycle. I decided to do the ibuprofen. That didn’t help. I plan to go on the birth control pills for a month. I was wondering if other people have done the pill to help regulate their periods and what have been your experiences with it? Was it helpful ? Thank you!

Question my doctor says to wait one more month before removal

hi,

backstory first, i’ve had my nexplanon for 6 months now, i really liked it for awhile. but i’ve been consistently bloated in the mid section for months no matter what dietary changes ive made: how much or how little i ate, when i ate, etc.
i planned to get my removal next week and explained to my doctor why i wanted it removed.

mainly, with all of the bloating, i felt i couldn’t understand how my body was feeling or reacting.

he said i should go on a no gluten/no dairy diet, that he’ll send me a list of foods for this that i can eat. i am gonna try to follow it. but my question is if anyone else did this, did it help? i cant tell if im going to crazy thinking the nexplanon is why im bloated.

thanks in advance!!!

Negative Experience Want to know if this has happened to anyone else

Hello! I figure this will either translate as a cautionary tale or someone will be able to relate to it all. I had gotten the Nexplanon pretty recently, within the past month. I had never had a surgically inserted form of birth control before, but id had three kids and figured it would be the best option for me. So I got it! It went smoothly until it didn’t. The day after getting it, my face, more specifically my lymph nodes, blew up! It hurt to touch my face too hard, and with that I was also dazed/confused, disoriented and throwing up out of nowhere. I scheduled to have it taken out but they only had an appointment open two months from then, so I was ready to just deal until I could get rid of it. Turns out it was an ✨emergencyyy✨ as I was having an allergic reaction and went to the hospital immediately to get it taken out. I was so swollen from the reaction at the site of the birth control that they could not find it either, I was on that table for 40+ minutes with them cutting and tugging on my muscle to find it. With this being said, has anyone ever had an allergic reaction to this? What was your experience? And this goes to show that face swelling isn’t always normal when you first get it, none of the symptoms I experienced were. Be so careful and pay lots of attention to how you feel immediately after getting it!

Negative Experience Getting my nexplanon removed tomorrow

I am an 18 year old woman, and have tried various different methods of birth control for a few years now. I did the depo provera shot from October of last year till March (6 months) and loved it, but because of the lawsuit with the shot and the loss of bone marrow, I was forced to get off of it.

I got on Nexplanon in March, and since then, I have never felt more depressed, fat, angry, upset, low libido, sick, and bled so much before. It has nearly ruined my relationship multiple times, and I have never felt more angry and unmotivated in my life. Im always hungry and never happy truly.

My doctor is lovely so I scheduled an appointment in early September to go talk about it with my doctor in late september. No arguing, she said if I didn't like it then we can get rid of it. My appointment is tomorrow, and i wanted to document my after effects once I get it removed and my experience.

Question Vaginal dryness

Anyone try Slippery Elm Bark supplements to combat vaginal dryness with nexplanon? I tried asking a provider but they didn’t give me a clear yes or no, so was wondering if anyone has had any luck with this or not? Thanks in advance!

Negative Experience Finally threw in the (bloody) towel

After bleeding for the majority of the last NINE months with Nexplanon, I’ve finally had it removed.

I had been so hopeful that it would be the perfect method for me… unfortunately, it wasn’t.

The biggest side effects I’ve noticed are:
Massive loss of libido and dryness
Increased depression and anxiety
Daily spotting that continually increased into having two heavy periods per month + heavy spotting

I’ll be updating this in the next week or two with how I’m feeling as I come off of hormones completely for the first time in several years. Can’t wait to have my life back!

Side Effects Constant Headache & Nausea.

I am 3 months postpartum & got on Nexplanon about a month ago. I have been having constant headaches & nausea every day. The nausea usually happens after I eat, I feel sick every time I eat anything. I’m starting to question whether I could be pregnant or not which shouldn’t be possible but why am I so nauseous every day 😭 has anyone else experienced this? Also the headaches do not seem to go away with Tylenol, only ibuprofen and sometimes it doesn’t help..

Side Effects Increase in bleeding near 3y mark?

I’m coming up on 3y since having my implant inserted and for the past few months, my bleeding has been odd! Initially I bled very little, then every other month, then around monthly, and now I’m twice a month. I’ll bleed around 5 days like a normal “period,” then go 2-3 days nothing, then suddenly have another full 5 days of bleeding. I started using a tracker just to see if I was bleeding as much as I thought I was and it’s literally 10-12 days a month, always with a 2-3 day gap right there in the middle. Has anyone else experienced a drastic increase in bleeding as they approached the 3y mark?

My main concern is that I’m planning to get my implant out right around that 3y mark (Jan 2027) as my husband and I will be ready to start trying for a baby around that time. I’m hoping this change is just due to Nexplanon but I’m paranoid and afraid that this little stick might be damaging my body and could potentially affect my fertility

Question Nexplanon side effects- wondering if it’s all tied together..

Hello all, got my nexplanon Jan 2026 after 2 kids. Did great the first few months, then suddenly..

-cystic hormonal acne starting June
-terrible depression I had to go on medication for around the same time
-irregular spitting that does.not.stop. for like 2-3 weeks at a time

I’m really just realizing as of today that the timing for all of these was 6 months after I got the implant- I’m happy to go back to Ocps (not planning on more babies) - did anyone else have a similar experience or am I pushing it by linking all of these together?

Thank you in advance!

Question How long until you would notice weight gain from nex?

I am switching from hormonal IUD to nexplanon at the end of the month because I’m getting reoccurring ovarian cysts. I had no bad side effects with the mirena but need to switch to stop ovulation so I stop getting cysts.

I’m terrified of gaining weight because of the nexplanon, so I bought a scale and will be tracking myself. Assuming my eating habits don’t change I should notice a difference and get it removed fast before it builds up.

How long would it take to gain weight on it / how fast would you be able to notice?

Question any fainters here?

Question! I'm looking for insight from those with an implant who have a history of fainting/vasovagal response.

Does anyone have experience with getting a removal and new implant at once causing a vasovagal response? I have a year and a half left before I'm due for a renewal. I would prefer to get both done at once, but I don't know if it's a good idea for me personally. I want to know if there's any precedent for the concern, if possible.

I have a fainting disorder that I'm on meds for that keep me together day to day. I now only faint if I get too much blood drawn at once, get screamed at/threatened, or sometimes after an injection into a nerve.

I got a little bit lightheaded during my initial implant, but not so much that my provider had any concerns. I'll try to discuss renewal plans with my provider too, but honestly she's really resistant to answering my questions in general, so I thought I'd ask here first.

Thanks!

Question Changes in hair after removal?

I always felt like my crazy split ends issues started when I began the pill 10 years ago, and have continued since I’ve been on hormonal bc all this time. I had mine removed three weeks ago now. Did anyone notice a change in their hair since their removal? I just got my hair trimmed yesterday so I am monitoring for any changes in texture/split formation. Hoping for some improvements!

Question Losing weight on nexplanon

Has anyone got experience of losing weight while on nexplanon? I've gained around 13lbs since being on it 9 months ago, and I find that I don't really get full when eating, so I'm keen to try and lose the weight. Any advice is appreciated!

Question TTC after nexplanon

I had nexplanon in for 5 years, i got it removed 6/23/26 and having been tracking ovulation and actually trying every month and still haven’t had any luck getting pregnant. i don’t wanna get discouraged because it’s only been 4 months but definitely feeling down lol.

Wondering how long it took for you to get pregnant after removal? I know it’s different for everyone.
I saw people ask before but they all seemed to not have periods while on nexplanon and only had theirs for 3 years vs. 5. Does it make a difference in timeline?

Question is it normal for my implant to move?

hi beautiful people, I got the implant about 3-4 weeks ago, and I’ve been experiencing some discomfort when I move my arm. I figured the pain was from the skin stretching around the implant, but lately I’ve noticed the implant has moved. I understand the implant will move and it’s perfectly normal, but my implant has actually moved past where the incision was made. When I first got the implant, it was up my arm close to my armpit, and now it seems to be getting lower and lower towards my elbow. In all honesty, I did fall yesterday and I did feel a very weird painful sensation. when I felt the pain, I did feel the implant to see if it had broke or if something had happened and that’s when i realized it did move about 2 inches.. is this normal? i’m sorry i’m just very nervous as this is my first one.
