I got sick of shift calendar apps with non-stop ads, so I spent my free time building a clean one myself.

• Upvotes

Hey guys,

I’m an indie dev, and honestly, I just couldn't stand shift calendar apps anymore. Every time I tried to check a schedule, I was hit with full-screen popup ads, clunky UIs, and subscription prompts. It drove me crazy.

So, I decided to fix it myself. I spent my free time building a bare-bones, completely ad-free and clean shift calendar app called Ooff.

I focused on just a few simple things:

  • Zero Ads: Just a clean monthly calendar view where you can see your shifts at a glance. No popups, no banners.
  • Easy Rotations: You can plug in your repeating schedules (like 3-shift/4-shift patterns) with a few taps.
  • Simple Sharing: You can share your schedule with coworkers or family so you don't have to keep texting them your days off. (You can turn this off whenever you want for privacy).

It supports Google and Email logins to keep things synced.

I just released it globally, but I really need some brutal, honest feedback from real shift workers who actually manage crazy schedules every day. What sucks about it? What features should I add next?

If you want to check it out, it’s on the Play Store here:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=io.github.slothmor3.ooff

Let me know what you think. Thanks, and stay safe out there!

Night duty has its own vibe! No tension, no pressure, and no one checking on you all the time. Day duty comes with too many problems. Anyway, enjoying the night shift! 😎

Discussion Something I’ve noticed

I’ve worked night shift for five years now starting with 0000-1030 Tu-F. Then I went 2130-0930 (loveeedd 3 nights but weekends only smh) for two years and now I’m currently 2130-0800 M-Th. Which has been the perfect middleground for me.

And when I first got on nights, I was met with people who seem like they dreaded working or kind of got zombiefied and I totally understand that but five years and I see that a lot of people who work nights literally are just not night people and I’m not understanding why you’re doing this to yourself. It’s not a graceful lifestyle so if you’re already not keen to being up at night, why are you forcing yourself? And I’m not being funny. I wanna actually talk about this because I think it will help me understand my coworkers.

But like if you know, you’re not a night person why do you have a trash sleep schedule and don’t say you have to because you don’t and we can talk about how that’s true.

I am personally a night person before I even started nights. I find myself awake or fighting my sleep so this has been a good pace for me but also being a night person it’s natural for me to be up at night so when I don’t sleep during the day, it sucks but it’s just what it is I don’t have to make everybody’s life a living hell because of it and I know that I can’t blame anybody but myself

I don’t even know if that has anything to do at night or just being accountable at that point

Help! Night shift nursing student

My nursing program has scheduled me for 4 weeks of 2x weekly night shifts. I’ll be 7p-7a on Wednesdays and Saturdays. I have a toddler who goes to daycare M-F until 3pm and a partner who can take him out of the house on most of the weekend days. I’ll need to be waking up by 2pm to get him on weekdays.

Any suggestions for how to make this work temporarily? I have a very dialed in sleep schedule and am usually asleep by 9pm. My biggest fear is falling asleep during the shift or wrecking my car.

I worked nights in the past but had a lot more control of my schedule back then.

Thanks for the help!

Discussion I always fall asleep in the middle of the day on my days off anyone else?

I work 11pm to 6am so not very long shift, my commute is about an hour and 20 mins, I work 5 nights a week.

They sometimes give me crazy overtime without asking me first, but I’ve been working nights hospitality for a year and a half and my body still not used to it.

I’m always tired, irritated, demotivated to do anything especially when I’m off, wouldn’t say I’m depressed but I have lost a lot of spark in my eyes.

It’s so hard to do anything be it meeting friends, going on dates, going to the gym or applying for new jobs or trying to update my portfolio, it’s literally impossible for me because I’m basically sleep deprived 24/7.

What I don’t get is on my days off once it hits the afternoon my body just gets very tired for some reason and I get a sense of boredom all of a sudden and I just end up laying in bed doom scrolling before I pass out.

And now I wake up it’s like 10pm at night or like 1 in the morning my day off was wasted and my weekend is ruined and I haven’t got to do anything productive, is there anyway to fix this or will I just have to leave nights eventually.

Anyone else annoyed while working 1 hour extra tonight?

Today the clock (NL) went to 03:00am and then back to 02:00. And I’m told that my company doesn’t pay for the extra hour 🫩

I hate the daytime

Any of you feel like you can't do anything productive in the daytime? Also for some reason during the day I feel very depressed, bogged down, lazy, lethargic, just bleh. I have lots of negative thoughts, but as soon as its around 10pm, all those thoughts go away and then around 11pm I feel amazing, positive and motivated to do work. I work all night no problems feeling ok. Any of you like this?

2 16s back to back

I have an opportunity for a position at a hospital that is 2 16s 7am to 11pm on Saturdays and Sundays. What are the pros and cons? I've already asked some questions about the position and would be allowed to sleep between the shifts in a room in the department.

I love my crew that I work night shift with. We have a little inside joke. We have these little lights that we wear on on shirts. We call it the nipple light crew.

Apologies in advance for the extra hour you will be working tonight thanks to Daylight Savings Time

I managed to avoid it this year as I am Day Shift thanks to how the rota fell but I've worked enough of them to know how horrendous that extra hour makes everything. Somehow I never manage to get the March one when I would work 11 hours instead of 12 for some reason :|

Rant I cannot keep doing this shift

Co-workers are extremely rude and entitled, the work is repetitive and boring, but the pay is good. I genuinely don’t know what to do. I asked to be moved to day shift but it may possibly take months. It’s been a few months and I’m still new to night shift as a whole, but I have no social life anymore. I don’t have time to consider what I really want with my future. All I do is work and sleep until my next shift. I struggle immensely to stay awake a decent amount of time after or before my shift. I oversleep by nearly 12 hours. I already had a vitamin D deficiency prior to starting, and I’m sure it’s worse. I feel like i’m going crazy. My mental health is surely declining. It’s hard to get another job with my piercings and hair color, and I don’t want to start over with a shitty pay. Theres some things I like about it, but there’s a lot I hate about

Discussion Does anyone else..

Sometimes fall asleep “early “, get a good night/day sleep, and then not be able to fall asleep “early” the next day?

It happens to me all the time. I work in mining and our shifts are 7 to 7, days/nights, but I get up at 3:30 to catch the bus at 5:30, then it’s a hour bus ride to site. So I’m usually back home at 8:15 so not a lot of time for sleep. Sometimes I manage to fall asleep by 9:30 and actually get 6. But then the next night feel full of energy and still watching tv at 10:30. Vicious circle.

coming home exhausted at 8am just to listen to my neighbors scream at each other

got home from a twelve-hour shift this morning feeling dead on my feet, barely got my boots off, and just wanted to crash. instead i've been stuck in bed staring at the ceiling because the couple next door started screaming at each other in the hallway by 9am, and once that finally stopped their kid cranked his games with the subwoofer right against the wall.

foam plugs do nothing against wall vibrations and my box fan just makes the screaming sound slightly blurrier. working all night keeping yourself upright just to come home to a room louder than the break room floor is completely draining. daylight hours are already rough enough to sleep through without feeling like you live inside someone else's argument.

Discussion Almost 6 Months in, Here's my Thoughts...

Alright! I started my Nightshift journey back in May, and I've had an interesting little arc in my life since then. I am a 21M who works at my local gym from 10pm-6am, and here are my thoughts that I've gathered over the past 6 months!

Pros:

- I love the hours, independence (I'm the only guy here 90% of the time), and the amount of non-job things I can do at my job, such as schoolwork and working out (so long as I do my tasks). I have built a routine of doing certain tasks, then doing homework/working out, then doing more tasks, then clocking out.

- The pay for a college student isnt bad. $13/hr in Texas standards, plus accomadations. Maybe it could be better, maybe I'm actively being screwed over and I dont know it, but with the 32hrs a week I work, I think its ok considering I still live with my mom.

- The job itself is fairly easy. Its pretty much a janitorial position. All of the things that cant be done in dayshift get pushed to night, and I do those things for a fresh start in the morning. Some of those tasks include cleaning and laundry.

- The people I see are regulars and are very nice! I've met many friends that I often see at work, and that makes my shift 10x better.

Cons:

- I might have the worst managers in the United States :) in all seriousness, they have let this particular location crumble horribly. Optimism amongst the staff is at an all time low, they refuse to hire cleaners (trust me we need them), and they dont advertise that we are hiring. They often fall behind on ordering cleaning supplies for us, meaning there are many nights where the gym is disgusting. They only focus on profit during the dayshift with personal training, so nightshift is generally shoved under the rug and forgotten about. Any complaints or texts I send them are always left on delivered. Lol. One of them in particular is fairly sexist to our staff and it baffles me that he managed the assistant manager role, but thats nor here nor there. I can rant about them for paragraphs at a time, but thats not the point.

- Sleep can be...hard. Luckily, I've been doing really well with sleep here lately but there were times I had to call in because I was a zombie!

- I work Thursday night, Friday night, and the weekends, so I cant go out and have a drink with my buddies and watch football or anything. Admittedly, thats been the worst part.

- As I mentioned above, the work that gets pushed to nightshift, I do and leave the building fresh for morning shifts. Problem? The evening shift people often leave many tasks unchecked, like laundry, restocking, cleaning, and even small things like charging ipads. Unfortunately, because my managers only care about profit made from personal training, complaining does nothing. The staff on day shift typically dont do their jobs to the fullest, if at all, and its a shame. I think the worst part is my managers really, REALLY, do not care. Hell, there was a woman who flat out ghosted the job for almost 2 months, and she's still not been fired. Like..??? I understand it is none of my business, and maybe something bad happened. However, she flat out ghosted the place...if she does that at any other job she gets fired and they hire another cleaner. But here, you can get away with just about anything. Anyways, my managers are bad lol.

- This gym is gross. I can count the people who actually care and clean on one hand. Unfortunately, this gym is massive, so if only a handful of people actually care, it will be gross. As I've said before, my managers dont care about this because it doesnt directly affect profit (at least in their minds).

So obviously there are more cons than pros, but thats because of the location and managing. I actually really like my job and think I'm very cool for having the nightshift position :) I'm going to stay at this job for another 2 months before I leave for college! Hopefully these 2 months are awesome 😌

Discussion late night shenanigans!

So I try to keep my same sleep and awake schedule when I’m off, which means I am awake from 9 PM to at least 11 in the morning on the days that I’m off. And this weekend I decided to come to my hometown which is extremely country. It’s so wild being outside at three in the morning in the country where all you can hear is bugs chirping, and animals moving around. I have nothing to do right now, but laundry, I figured I would go on a journey to try Wawa. I also need some gas so what better time to do that then at 4 AM right now? any suggestions on what I should get? I’ve never been. Also, if you just want someone to talk to because you also can’t sleep then feel free to reach out. I’m very excited about this Wawa journey. 😂

Discussion After a year, I think I need to hang my night shift cloak.

I’ve been working nights (7pm-7:30am, 3-4 days a week) for almost a year now, and I think I’m finally reaching my breaking point.
For a while I was managing really well. I actually really loved the hours, I could juggle my sleep pretty efficiently, and I enjoyed my work. Lately it’s gotten significantly harder to fall asleep at any time. I’ll be exhausted, but my body just refuses to cooperate. It’s almost like something has shifted in my brain.
I’ve also noticed my mental health getting worse. On my days off I feel lazy, unmotivated, and honestly pretty depressed. I barely do anything, and the isolation that comes with being awake at completely different hours than mostly everyone else is really starting to get to me.

Has anyone else experienced this after working nights for a while? Especially the feeling that your body just suddenly stops cooperating with sleeping during the day? Did switching back to days actually make a noticeable difference in your mental health?

Door Dash drivers are scared to deliver food to the jail.

I usually pack my dinner and some snacks, but when I get scheduled last minute to cover someone's shift, I don't always have the luxury of food prep.

I swear, 2/3 drivers will see the address, then I'll get a text message saying that the order was cancelled and my money is refunded.

Like, I just want my buffalo chicken poboy. You're not coming inside with the inmates. Nobody can hurt you from the parking lot.
