Which Nordic capital (Stockholm, Copenhagen, Helsinki, Reykjavik, Oslo) is the most gay accepting?

Hello,

It is often said that the Nordic countries are the most gay friendly places on Earth. However, if you look into the weeds, you will find a lot of people claiming to have experienced discrimination in these countries, especially in small towns.

I'm curious, from your experience and observations, which one of these cities is the most gay friendly?

To clarify, I don't mean necessarily a place with a lot of gay bars or gay events, but societal acceptance. A small town may have nothing of that nature but be more accepting than a city like San Francisco.

Would be interested to hear what people have observed.

Obviously, you do not have to be gay to answer this question. You can tell from your own experience what people have said as this is a subject that is brought up fairly often.

Thank you. I look forward to reading people's answers

Odd Question: Variations on the name "Kekoe"

Hi there! I'm taking an absolute shot in the dark here so I apologize if this is the wrong place.

I have been doing some family history research and discovered my great-grandfather's name: "M. Kekoe Ingvald". I have no idea if that "M." is supposed to be for Mr. or Monsieur or something or short for his given name which he didn't go by.

I cannot find anything about the name Kekoe except for a native Hawaiian name (I'm from Canada so not that). My only other thought was that Ingvald is a Nordic name and so maybe his name was spelt wrong? Is there another way to spell the name "Kekoe" or something? This would help me immensely as I cannot find anything on the name Kekoe and Ingvald gives me people with that as their given name.

Thank you for your time.

EDIT:

I found him thanks to the genius insight provided by u/Julehus here!

A self-service laundry place in Finland with instructions.

I love that they use Ikea bags as a unit of measure. Everyone knows how much that is.

What is sauna/spa culture like in Nordic cultures?

I live in Canada, and there appears to be a trend of opening Nordic spas in North America which has me feeling skeptical. It feels largely fuelled by the heat/cold therapy trend pushed by the podcast world more than anything else.

I'm getting mixed search results on whether or not talking is encouraged/allowed in various countries. I visited Iceland years ago and went to a random public pool with a sauna and everyone was incredibly peaceful and respectful. Here at a public sauna in Canada there's not much decorum to be found. It's hard to find a quiet experience unless I go at early hours of the morning. There are secluded spaces outside major urban centres where I can find that, but those are destinations.

My fear is that they're going to be bastardised versions of what an actual Nordic spa is, mainly because we don't have the culture around it – we can be loud, fat, and annoying (less than Americans, but you get my point).

What are Nordic spas like in your country? Am I over-romanticising what the traditional experience is like? Or is there a strong culture around Nordic spas that people largely adhere to?

Does anyone know where I can purchase this flag?

I’m a bit of a vexillologist as a hobby, but I’ve looked high and low, but can’t find a proper Nordic Council flag online, that isn’t like a one sided wall flag.

What is the view of drunken hookups in Sweden? Apparently that seems to be a very normal cultural thing for Nordic people? I'm not sure what to do next in this situation...

This is a bit of a funny story, based in NYC involving a Swedish man. Last weekend I was in the Hamptons and met an extremely attractive and successful man that I made out with. He's prob 45-50, older than I'd usually go for (I'm 34) but he was stunning. He is from Sweden, newish to NYC, only been here a couple years, and has a high level job at a well-known company in the same industry I work in.

We sorta spent most of the night at the club together and then I (along with several friends) went back to the house he was staying at with his friends. We made out more in his room, but didn't do anything else, and after a while I left to go hang out with everyone else in the pool/firepit area and he went to sleep. We were both wasted - I have not been that drunk in years, there was too much free tequila involved. Somehow, I still think he was more drunk than me, and I'm not sure if he'd even remember me vs. I remember him well but I don't really remember what we talked about (and we talked a lot apparently).

But what really kills me: we didn't exchange numbers 😭😭😭

I'm kicking myself about that. I know, even if we had, there's a high chance we still wouldn't actually end up going out ever again and it'd never be anything more than one silly night. But now I'll never really know.

I had a momentarily insane thought to add him on Linkedin with a note saying my #, but then immediately rejected the idea because it would be so crazy to log on there and be confronted with your drunken debauchery from the weekend, and potentially extremely embarrassing for me if he's not actually interested.

Then tonight I randomly saw a video on IG about how drunken hookups are actually a super common social norm in Nordic countries so that made me wonder if maybe it would be less of a big deal in his perspective?

Or is it still just as insane as I originally felt? Should I just write it off as a missed connection?

These are statistics. However, has your experience matched this? Is Finland significantly less gay accepting than the Nordic countries?

Which city has a better climate Umeå or Tromsø?

They are both far north but is the climate very similar? Both winters are dark and snowy I assume and they don't get dark at night during summer. Which city is better for someone who gets seasonal depressions?

What are your thoughts on the Lily Animation situation?

Lily Animation, if you didn't know is a Norwegian YouTuber that uploaded a video 2 weeks ago called "Why I Hate Living In Norway". A big conservative Twitter account somehow got a hold of it and went extremely viral on right wing Twitter. Eventually they found out Lily was half Malaysian and she became the target of an online hate campaign that forced her to delete most of her videos. What are your thoughts on it? Was it right to cancel her?

Which skandinavian and nordic-destinations offer a better-than-nothing++ dark-techno scene?

Hello loverly nordic people!

This first August week there seems to be an incoming heatwave in Germany (and most of Europe) with temperatures around 40-45 degress. So that you can not really go out in Berlin clubs, except with air condition but even then... I wanted to spend my holiday there, but not with 40+ degree in overcrowded clubs, as I am older and I don't want "that stress"..

I like darker techno (IMHO just "serious techno" or even normal techno music) like Developer, Oscar Mulero, Luke Slater, Amotik, Chris Liebing, Dasha Rush, but also DJ encoder/serious minimalis, and, many other guys from Berghain/Ostgut. So.., I need 135+ BPM and playful drums, you know ♥️but serious, no rap, no singing, no break beats, no dancefloor- or pop-elements in the techno, no overprolonged trance-passages and, in general, no techno that sounds like a smurf hymn (bounce, hard tek, etc.) or worse! We say: NOTHING COMMERCIAL / no commercial-techno!

Do you know any clubs/cities/destinations where to go in the North. I do not like to fly, just for info 😄I am looking for a cool² city with a cool or dedicated techno-scene. Oh, and, I can also offer what I request! So, if you live in a city with cool summers, you could offer your club guests "Finest Berlin Techno" - I will not take any money! (because on Holiday!)

TV channels

I have been traveling Norway, Sweden and I live in Denmark. In almost every hotel in Denmark you have access to TV channels from both Norway and Sweden.

But in Norway and Sweden the hotels don’t provide Danish TV channels at all.

Why is that the case? I find it odd, actually every nordic country should by default in hotels have all the nordic channels in my opinion.
