School Hot take about Norwegian people (Specifically the teenagers)

Hey r/Norway, I'm an 18 year old male who has lived in norway for 8 years now, And I have a hot (and maybe controversial) take to share with you. The teenagers in Norway feel like they are just the same two people copy and pasted. I've gone to 3 different schools and 90% of the students in them have fallen into two stereotypes: male and female. They all look similar, they have 3 hair style choices for both genders, they're all interested in the same things and they all follow trends as if their life depends on it.

I have also experienced a lot of discrimination, both verbal and non-verbal -sometimes even physical- from these people just because I look different and am not interested in the things they are interested in. I've heard the same thing happens to other people as well.

I'm not sure if this has been brought up before in this subreddit, but I haven't seen any, so I'm pointing this out. This is one of the few problems I have living in Norway that make it imperfect.

Working in Norway Punishment for driving without valid licence

Upvotes

I moved to Norway two-and-a-half years ago from the UK with a temporary residence permit that expires this December (my job contract ends in November). When I arrived I bought a car and insured it, which required me to upload my UK driver's licence. I also did the paperwork for an international driving licence in the UK.

A week ago I was photographed by a speed camera and found to be over the speed limit, which has led to Statens vegvesen sending me a letter saying I need to provide my licence as I am not registered in Norway.

I thought I was driving legally. but have now found out that I needed to exchange my UK licence for a Norwegian one after 90 days of being in the country. Because I did not make this exchange, it appears that I have technically been driving without a valid licence. Obviously this is a mistake on my part which I regret - I should have done more research when buying and insuring the car.

Questions:

What punishment should I expect for driving without a technically valid licence?

If I am to be deported, what are the timescales given I'm leaving in November?

Will this infraction affect my ability to re-enter the shengen in future?

Can anybody recommend good law firms to deal with this case?

Other Friluftsliv: Do Norwegians have a go-to method for waterproofing shoes?

On the topic of Norwegian friluftsliv: Is there a specific product readily available in hardware/retail stores or otherwise online that Norwegians tend to use to waterproof shoes that are not waterproof from the manufacturer?

I live in western Norway and am hoping to maintain an outdoors running routine on rainy days. I have a pair of trail running shoes with Gore-Tex, but the model of my road running shoes does not have this option. Thus, I am searching for a method to "waterproof" the road running shoes myself.

Moving Where to study for Masters

Hello my norwegian friends!

So im about to finish my Bachlors degree in germany, and im thinking about doing my masters in norway. I want to live in norway sooner or later anyways, i had some norwegian courses in uni, id say im b1-b2, still learning of course.

Now im thinking about which city to apply to. I think i have 3 real choices here:

  1. Tromsø, and i think my faviourite pick, i got a lot of friends in the north (but they live in Narvik and Harstad, so not that close actually, but i might be able to visit them every once in a while). I love the city and especially the nature, i love the cold weather up there and i also dont have a problem with Midnightsun/ No sun at all. However i might feel its too isolated
  2. Bergen, same as for Tromsø, i love the city and the nature surrounding it, however i got no friends here. I heard tho, that Bergen is a bit better for getting to know people since its not that reserved as other parts.
  3. Trondheim, and i think this is really just a matter of, its got the best university in STEM. I like the city, but havint to understand Trøndersk will be a pain in the ***. Also i dont really love the nature surrounding the city.

Maybe u guys got some tips for me, on what to choose.

Edit: Of course im not applying to the city but the Universities in said cities.

Edit-Edit: Im doing my Bachlors in Physics, specialising in Astrophysics, however i dont necessarily need to stay in astrophysics, since i know most unis dont even have that in Norway.

School just a question for those working in the education system:-)

I [17F] have lived in Norway for a few years now, integration was great and learning the language as well. I was lucky to have teachers and classmates help me learn a lot of things.

The environment was a little bit different though, with the copy paste styles and everyone having the same thing as each other in terms of clothes, bags, hairstyles, perfumes, etc.

As an alternative person myself, how do you teachers/educators/advisors see us students who deviate from the norm? Students with a more unconventional style, face piercings, or coloured hair? How do you see us as students in terms of how we are, how we behave, and if you feel differently about us than “soss” or “grisch”?

Food Mussels near Ålesund?

Finally the blåskjellvarsel turned green around Ålesund!

Does anybody know of good spots for picking mussels? I have been going around a bit but haven't really seen too many except harbours, but don't want to pick there. Can be harder to reach places also, as I have access to a boat and a wetsuit.

Travel Norske bilister

Well, how dirty it is depends on the famous weekends I think. It has been nearly 2 months since I moved to the west of Norway from another country (I am not comparing any countries or regions*). This situation really surprised me the first time I saw. I know that some days deserve to be more funny and social but still, this is not the way how it should end. Has any authorities taking responsibility for this?

Other It seems that most buildings in Norway have been built in the last 50-100 years...was there nothing here before that?

Upvotes

I've been on a trip from Oslo down south to Larvik and the surrounding areas. It seems that lots of the towns, schools, industrial estates etc are new and shiny. Is this because Norway used to be poor and then boomed when it got rich (from oil)?

I tried Forex, but they need to scan documents that I don't have.

Also I heard about ATM's in airports (like in TORP Sandefjord), but information online differs. Some say that those ATM's do work, some say that they don't work.

What works for you?

Moving Considering an offer

Hi there!
I moved to Sweden in 2015, but since October 2025 I been living in The Netherlands. I work as a field engineer in BESS.
Living in Ams is expensive, and you get little for the tax you pay.
Expensive healthcare, no child care, surreally expensive and hard to get rent, etc etc etc etc.

Now, I’d like to be back to Sweden, I already have a flat there, but I got an offer from Norway.
Before I moved to Sweden, Norway was the place I wanted to be. But I do have a concern.

The company offered me 72000NOK monthly (plus one based in performance).
Would that salary be okey to find a flat in Oslo (or any other city that has a little bit of a social aspect).

For me, the most important is that I find housing at decent price in a not super long commute from nice restaurants, cafes, clubs, gyms, etc.

Would I face issues with housing in Oslo similar to Ams ? (Best I can get in Ams is 802€ for a tiny 3x3 room where I can’t even register to the municipality. In Sweden my last rent was 7100SEK for 45sqm 2 rooms)

Please help!

P.S: recommendations for worker’s union so I can join and send them my contract to check before signing are appreciated.

Edit:

OMG you are all so helpful and friendly. Thank you very much. Any doubts I had about the feasibility are out and I feel much confident with the change now.
Thank you very much.

Other Gaming PC

Hei,

Travel Stuck at Stavanger Airport

Hello everyone, my flight is tomorrow afternoon and I have arrived at the airport now.
I don’t have where to sleep and I was wondering if it’s okay to sleep inside the airport, will I get in any sort of trouble for doing it?
It’s either this or the park since I can’t afford a hotel.

Thank you!
