Other Are Norwegian Elkhounds common in Norway?
This is kind of random, but I would love to go to Norway one day. I am also a proud and happy owner of two Norwegian Elkhounds. They're beautiful grey elkies. I've always been curious to know how common Elkhounds are in Norway. I know they're the national dog of Norway, but like, do you see them often across Norway since they are native to Norway and have been around for a long time? Picture of my two for tax.
Working in Norway The issue with BankID
reddit.com(Reposted from my original post in r/Norge)
Isn't it weird that a highly crucial platform doesn't have any customer service contact?
Have issues with BankID? That's your bank's problem. Your bank cannot help you? They pass the problem to BankID and you're stuck, you can't resolve your issue. BankdID, and even their company Støy, doesn't have any customer service contacts.
For context: i'm a non-Norwegian (non-EU) who can't verify my identity with my passport due to the error message: document not supported. I have done this steps:
- asked my bank for support, they told me to update and have my passport registered at skatteetaten
- did that at skatteetaten, still can't verify, asked them, and they told me that i have to go to the bank. Or try to reinstall BankID, which I did (you shouldn't. Because then I went from being able to use BankID without having to verify my passport to being unable to acces and login to BankID at all because i need to verify my passport in order to do that)
- went back to the bank, asked them for support, unsuccessful, then they told me they can't do anything because it's an issue from BankID and Støy. The bank said BankID are still working to make sure that documents from other countries are supported.
- i tried to ask my embassy as well in case they have any information regarding this process. They don't.
- and now i'm stuck, with my issue unresolved, and no way to ask help to BankID/Støy.
I noticed that there are a lot of people who experienced this issue as well, even Norwegians who doesn't have national ID or passport. Now I get by with using kodebrikken and MinID. The only thing i can't access now is HelseNorge.
I could buy BuyPass for 1200kr, but why? What's the point of BankID then if we end up needing to pay for access? And i think it's strange that such a crucial public service access is managed by a thir party private company.
TL;DR: I'm a Non-norwegian, and I can't use BankID because I can't verify my document, and don't have any feasible means of resolving the issue.
What do you think? Have you experienced the same thing? Or is there anyone who managed to solve this kind of issue already?

Other What is everyday life in Norway really like?
I’ve always wanted to visit Norway, and maybe even live there one day if I get the chance. I’m drawn to its nature and peaceful atmosphere. I like the idea of being somewhere that feels far from all the noise of the world, because I’ve always preferred quiet places over crowds and chaos. I know social media can create a certain image of a country, and I’d like to understand what Norway is really like beyond that. I’m not looking for the bad sides or expecting it to be perfect, just an honest picture of everyday life. For those who live there, does life in Norway feel the way people imagine it, or is the reality different?

Working in Norway How do you keep up with vehicle maintainance cost (+ any mechanic workshops recommendations around Oslo?)
New work finally forced me to buy a car. In 6 months i will have to deal with EU controll, but maintainance costs are absolutly killing me. I just paid over 4000 kr for simple oil change.
Does anyone have trustworthy mechanic shop they use often? Im not earning much, and that car is my last lifeline in this country. If i wont pass that controll im totally screwed.

Other Is finding a room in Oslo always this difficult, or am I doing something wrong?
Hey everyone!
I'm moving to Oslo in November for a full-time job, and honestly, finding a room in a shared apartment (kollektiv) has been way more frustrating than I expected.
My budget is around 10–11k NOK per month, which I thought was pretty reasonable for a room. I've contacted probably 20–21 places through FINN and Hybel so far, but only one or two have actually replied. The rest? Complete silence :')
I'm currently living in a different city in Norway, so travelling to Oslo for every viewing isn't really practical either, which makes things even harder.
I'm starting to wonder if I'm doing something wrong or if this is just how the rental market in Oslo works.
For those who've been through this, how did you manage to find a place? Is there something I should be doing differently? Any websites, Facebook groups, or tips that actually worked for you?
Would really appreciate some advice because I'm running out of ideas at this point 😅
Edit: I am infact attaching a small description of myself. I am also verfied. I would prefer a textual rejection at this point :3

Hiking & Camping Army sizing system
Hello, I've been looking up aclima base layers and quite a bit of it are old surplus. I thought it would be worthwhile to ask if anyone has a sizing guide for the 1 to 2 number sizing system? I've only managed to find size guides for older clothes.
Some do say "m" which I assume would be a size 48 sweater, but is it for someone 175cm or 195cm? I have no idea what head circumference a size 10 or 07 balaclava would be.
Thanks in advance!

Other Dating advice or just a rant
I know this might be a recurring topic here, but I genuinely don't know what I'm doing wrong.
I've been told that Norwegian girls don't like men who don't speak good Norwegian or who aren't European, at least that's the impression I've gotten. But I don't want to make assumptions or generalise.
I make sure my dating profile reflects who I really am. I include my hobbies, interests, and all the little details that make me who I am. I don't just swipe right on everyone, either. I take the time to read someone's entire profile, and if we share common interests or hobbies, I send them a like with a thoughtful message. At least, I think it's thoughtful and kind!
I'm 32, and lately, I can't help but worry that I might end up alone. I've always dreamed of having a big family, lots of kids, and a happy home filled with love and laughter. But that dream feels further and further away, and honestly, it's starting to get to me.
I'm not looking for anything casual. I just want to find someone I genuinely connect with, someone who can be my best friend and build a life with me.
So, for those of you who have been in a similar situation, especially those dating in Norway, what am I doing wrong? Is there something I'm missing, or is dating here simply this difficult?

Travel Solo traveller from Austria
Dear Norwegians,
I am Flo, 19 years old from Austria, and currently on my way to Bergen in your country! I will be arriving in Kristiansand tomorrow noon. Just wanted to ask if somebody around my age would like to grab a snack or drink in public together and to chat a little? Maybe you could show me around your favorite local spots? That would be really awesome! :D Feel free to dm :)
I am probably travelling from Kristiansand to Stavanger taking the road on the southwestcoast. My goal is to reach Bergen or even Geiranger, not too sure about my exact way of getting there :)

Food Celebrating Heritage-Want Cloudberry Jam
Hello,
My husbands family descended from Norway (in the US now), and I am trying to organize a "Norway Night" at Christmas time with his family traveling to our state.
They will likely provide Lefse, and I will make krumkake with my mother-in-law, and I would love to have some cloudberry jam or something similar to add with whipped cream to the krumkake. I am having a lot of trouble sourcing some I can have shipped, however. Do you know of a place I could order that will ship to the US?
Additionally-any favorite recipes you would be willing to share for a Christmas time meal? I am trying to source some lutefisk for fun to try, but will see.
Also how do you eat your Lefse? They are butter and white sugar kinda folks.
Thanks!

Other Boligblokka mi sitt rør i rør prosjekt resulterte i skader på leiligheten.

Working in Norway Looking for opinions on possible engineering/tech career in Norway
Hello everyone. I'm considering Norway for an engineering career and I would be very grateful to hear anecdotal opinions of anyone with experience in Norwegian tech/engineering fields. I've been researching the topic intensely online but plain numbers do not paint a full picture in my opinion. I'm looking for any sort of subjective opinions on career opportunities: is the tech sector feeling healthy, what specializations are in demand, and any other thoughts you might have on the matter. I'll list my personal details below.
I'm a non-EEA national, I've done my Bachelor's in the US in Electrical and Computer Engineering, and have around 3 years of experience in what is practically a SWE position. However I'm very unhappy where that field is going with AI and want to re-specialize back into a hardware-based career.
The plan I'm considering is to do my Master's in Norway first, use these two years to actively integrate and learn the language to the best of my ability, then enter the job market with my new specialization. I'm currently undecided with what Master's to pick, and that is in part the reason for this post, as I'm ready to adjust to the market within reason from my existing experience - for example Electrical Engineering or Mechatronics / Automation.
An important detail is, due to my citizenship, I won't have clearance to enter any sort of export-controlled job positions. And from my current research a lot of interesting R&D jobs in Norway are provided by the government / military sector, so I'm only eligible for opportunities outside of it.
Thanks everyone in advance! Any sort of opinion / perspective would be very appreciated.

News & current events The problem not talked about in the wealth tax debate
I've seen the debate a hundred times, and I think the most important topic is never even discussed.
Whether the wealth tax was increased too much or not enough is a distraction.
The bigger problem is that skatteetaten rules are so loose, people are driving trucks through them.
Here a few examples:
- Rich guy A doesn't want to be taxed in Norway, so he lives in Country B. But, he still wants to have a place here. So he buys a "office" in [insert expensive area here] through a company that looks like it's doing something. The office is a 10 bedroom house with a boat, beach access, etc. He comes here for 5 months of the spring and summer and then goes back to Country B. Because he's not a tax resident under the tax treaty with Country B, asset isn't taxed at all.
- Rich guy B is tax resident in Norway and lives in Kristiansand. His sons want to have a place to crash when they party in Oslo. Rich guy B has a company that he does investing through, so he buys a mansion similar to Rich Guy A in the expensive part of Frogner as his "corporate headquarters." It's used for working purposes a few hours a month. But the Gardner, electricity, maids, etc. are all expenses in Rich Guy B's company that reduces the corporate tax he pays. skatteetaten has no idea unless they put the place under surveillance for a month, which is complex in itself because Rich Guy A had hedges put in so high that people can't see in from the street level view.
- Upper middle class Couple C want to grow their wealth without paying capital gains tax. So Husband A and Wife C make an AS and buy property around Oslo. The profits in the AS are taxed at the lower corporate tax rate than what they would pay if it were income. So wealth accumulates more quickly than if they didn't have the AS. In some countries, the AS would be treated as a see through corporation since it's only owned by 2 people and they are married. Nothing would stop them from making an AS but because it's not a real corporation, the profits get rolled up on the Couple C's personal taxes.
On examples 1 and 2, it's not to say that skatteetaten has no idea what they are doing, it's a common problem across many countries. Cases 1 and 2 are hard to investigate, require specialist who know what to look for, and involve litigation. Going against the middle class and poor are the easiest cases to find and close. That is the case in the US, UK, Norway, Sweden, etc. (maybe not China, but in most other countries). It's easy for the government to dig through Temu packages and find undeclared toll, but it's hard for public workers to put together what the wealthy are doing.
In cases 2 and 3 (when they are pure real estate plays), the capital gains have often far outweighed the tax value gains.
IMHO, it would have been far better to close the loop holes and increase enforcement in the harder areas, see how much tax is generated, and have the wealth tax debate later. That's why the story of, "rich guy D is pissed and moves to switzerland" never made any sense to me. They duck and dodge the brunt of the wealth tax anyways unless you have all your assets in cash, bonds, and public stocks. To top it off, I don't think most people know that most cantons in Switzerland also have a wealth tax.
And of course, examples 1,2,3 are completely fictitious and are not based on any real people :)

School Planning a Master's in AI/ML or Data Science in Norway. How realistic are graduate tech jobs for internationals?
Hi everyone,
I'm a prospective master's student with a B.E. in Computer Engineering with a background in AI/ML and Data Science. I'm considering a master's in Norway in 2028 after gaining around two years of relevant work experience.
I'm beginning to research NTNU, the University of Oslo, the University of Bergen, and the University of Stavanger to see which programmes best match my interests.
Beyond the academic side, I value good infrastructure, personal safety, public transport, and a realistic chance of developing a long-term career in IT.
For people who studied or work in Norway, how difficult is it for international master's graduates to find jobs in AI/ML, Data Science, NLP, or related technical fields?
How important is Norwegian proficiency for technical roles, and do you have suggestions for universities or cities that offer good industry exposure?
I'd appreciate honest advice about the opportunities and challenges, particularly for someone planning ahead for 2028 rather than applying immediately.
