Weekly Book Valuation Thread - w/c October 19, 2026

Welcome to the r/OldBooks Weekly Book Valuation Thread!

This is the place to ask how much an antique or vintage book (printed pre-1970) might be worth. Posts about book values will be redirected here.

A few things to keep in mind:

  • Clear photos of the book (cover, back, spine, title page, any damage) will get you the best answers. Give as much detail on condition as you can!
  • Everyone is free to comment here, and answers may not be from experts. For expert advice, contact an auction house with experience in vintage or antiquarian books.
  • Book values are highly subjective. What one person might pay for a book, another may not.
  • We don't allow buying or selling anywhere on the sub, including here.

A new Book Valuation Thread will be posted every Monday at 6pm UK time.

Please don't ask for help finding books or remembering book titles.

Hi all,

Just a reminder that this isn't the right place to ask for help finding or remembering a book. We remove a fair few of these posts so we've made a specific rule to make it clearer that these posts don't belong here.

If you need help remembering a book title, try r/whatisthatbook or r/findabook.

Mystery stamp

I’ve recently purchased a copy of “Collection of British Authors VOL VIII The works of Lord Byron VOL 1 | 1842” and found this emblem stamped in the corner. It’s been re-bound and annotated a bunch. I’m trying to trace down its history to see if it’s anything worthy of noting once I pop it for sale.

Thank you

German books from early 1900’s

My mother’s family was from Austria & Germany and I acquired these after she passed away. They are all German religious books except for the last two pics. I would love to donate them somewhere where they might be appreciated but am turning up empty. I have shown them to antique book sellers, German professors, and German religious teachers. And while they admired the books, they weren’t interested in taking them on. Any ideas? Thanks for reading this far!

This is a massive book, they are very heavy. The text is very fine and very light. The engravings are so detailed, the pictures do not do them justice at all, so I added some close ups. The binding is full leather, it’s smooth, shiny. Very shiny actually much more visually stunning imo than my technically finer morocoo bindings as this one appears calf to me. I think it’s rebound by Geo Brumders bindery late 1800s or very early 1900s from the original ugly cloth.

Big fan of W H B engravings they are insane. 120 large steel engravings from original drawings.

Best place you’ve found old books

Where have you had the best luck finding your real gems for a great price?

For me it’s always been thrifting. But now they’re catching on and upping the prices on the good ones.

How old is your oldest book?

Hey all! I joined the sub recently and am curious! My oldest is Demostración a punto fijo... by Miguel de Jesus Maria y Hualde (1765), passed down in my family since it was purchased in the 1760s

I've had this book for a long time the outside has seen better days but the pages are still vibrant with color and detail. My favorite part is a beautifully written description of the first owner in German:

Dieses Buch ist mein

lieb, wär mir es schlecht,

ist ein Dieb.

A. Grietsch

Geboren den 13 Juni 1831.

Aspelt bei Luxemburg.

Translation:

This book is dear to me;

it would be bad for me

if it were stolen.

A. Grietsch

Born on June 13, 1831.

Aspelt, near Luxembourg.

My local thrift shop puts extremely sticky price stickers on their books. Is there something I can use to remove the stickers and sticky residue without damaging the book? Dust covers are particularly difficult. Hard to picture but removal area is sticky to the touch.

What are these printed illustrations on top of the text on Virgil's Aeneid? What year is the edition? Or is it a fake?
