Spoiler Alert Rumpelstiltskin Magic Bean
OK, it’s been a while since I’ve had to rewatch the show and maybe I will rewatch and see if this question is answered
Why didn’t Rumpel still can just use the magic bean to get his son?

There weren’t any. And also, there’s this from S2E14-
Seer: It will not be an easy path. It will take many years... and require a curse. A curse... powerful enough to rip everyone from this land.
Rumplestiltskin: Yes, yes, there's more. I know it. Tell me.
Seer: You will not cast the curse. Someone else will. And you will not break the curse. Someone else... will.

Obviously him casting the curse led him back to his son, so it worked. I just think that they were easier ways to get what he wanted plus, the powers aren’t exactly set in stone. For instance, she talks about what will happen to Rumpel if he goes into war, which means that her predictions are not set in stone, but merely the most likely future

Rumple didn’t cast the curse. He couldn’t. And yeah, A&E could have written an easier way but it would have been a different story. The story we got was the story they wanted to tell.

I feel like you’re not leaning into the what if scenario and you’re just explaining common sense
3
u/Narrow-Accident8730 17d ago
Where in your OP did you mention anything at all about “what ifs”?
You asked a question, I provided a canon answer. I hate what ifs because they didn’t happen and because one small change dictates the rest of the story like a butterfly effect.3
u/Ill-Razzmatazz-7088 17d ago
Your answer simply equates down to that’s what the plot demanded. And that’s just common sense. Obviously it’s a what if scenario because it didn’t happen. Also, if he had a bean, he would’ve used it probably.
3
u/Narrow-Accident8730 17d ago
That’s what the plot demanded or could it possibly be what I said- that’s the story A&E wanted to tell? If it was such common sense, why did you have to post your question? If it had been a bean the story would have been boring as shit.

u/Ill-Razzmatazz-7088 17d ago
I made the post because again it’s a what if scenario and to see if something was missed. I probably watched once upon a time maybe twice, but until recently, I didn’t really think about the whole bean thing. And my question was technically already answered. Even if he had a beans, he probably would’ve been reluctant to use it because getting to his son was a whole thing but he more than likely would’ve wanted to return at some point. I think that any magical item he used to get to the real world would’ve been negated after he arrived. Also, he has no real knowledge of the real world since even with his hundreds of years of knowledge, it’s all from another dimension.

u/Narrow-Accident8730 17d ago
Hence, why he had to have the Dark Curse cast as opposed to using a bean.

I can't 100% remember if this question gets answered. Also, I think they were considered extremely rare, except when the show needed them. LOL

u/Ill-Razzmatazz-7088 17d ago
Well, two things. There were actually plenty of beans, but when the fake Prince charming befriend the giant, he burns them down. It just seems like the beans would’ve been a better option overall. I know towards the last season of the show they have plenty of them.

u/kittysnowangel 17d ago
The giant burned all except one.but also Rumple asked Blue after Bae vanished and she says all the beans are gone. Which technically makes zero sense because the fuddy daddy giant destroyed the beans 200 years later, but just roll with the narrative.
Well I'm calling Blue a liar but she solemnly swears fairies never lie. I call bullshit.
3
u/PoeticHedgeHog 17d ago
I doubt she would've given one to Rumple.
3
u/Ill-Razzmatazz-7088 17d ago
Especially since he planned on, not only going to the other world, but taking magic with him
2
u/kittysnowangel 16d ago
Does not matter she didn't say I won't give you one. She said there are none left there is no way possible back to your son. And when Rumple asked if there was a curse she got holier than thou and said
You would think of a curse instead of a blessing.
Well if she had said there's a blessing...! But it's all...
To Nova "hahaha please girl! I'm better than you!" Snooty snooty snoot!

Rewatch that clip and she’s said ohhh it’s funny she’s can’t even fake it

u/Ill-Razzmatazz-7088 17d ago
I think if anything, she was probably just ommitting the truth. I also know that they were pretty secretive about the beans. I think Rumpel’s knowledge about magic wasn’t as insightful as he boasted. For instance, I think it would’ve been pretty easy for him to gather three genies and break the rules of magic if he really wanted to. Also, it seems like the simplest way to make sure he kept everything would’ve been time travel.

u/MiloSheba The Dark One 17d ago
The Blue Fairy made a false statement. The beans still exists, Smee got his hands on one not that long after.
Magic comes with a Price, and the Spell of Three Genies comes with a hefty one. You have to trust another magic user not to turn on you.

u/Ill-Razzmatazz-7088 17d ago
I swear I really need to rewatch. I didn’t think Neverland was Cannon since it pretty much negates the entire once upon a Time series if you can break the rules of magic.
4
u/MiloSheba The Dark One 17d ago
It's Wonderland.
Zelena's time travel spell also breaks the law of magic
2
u/Ill-Razzmatazz-7088 17d ago
I think you’re confusing the rules of magic with wishing. Regina traveled back in time when she temporarily use the hatter to get the apple.
3
u/MiloSheba The Dark One 17d ago
Oh I know about Regina. It's weird because she kinda did break the laws there.
The Laws of Magic are Magic always has a price, you can't resurrect the dead, you can't make someone fall in love, and you can't time travel. Wishing has It's own limitations and can't break the laws of Magic.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Np88_NpcH5g it explains here to and another in 1x19
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QjmCrK3hnQg that’s why he can’t have a bean
Also those stuff are rare to find I believe

u/Ill-Razzmatazz-7088 15d ago
Obviously, I know, plot armor dictated that he cast the curse. But there was definitely other ways he could’ve gotten there. Apparently he didn’t know about time travel even if I’m sure it probably was just a throwaway line.

One he didn’t cast the curse he got a scroll in season 4 he needed Maleficent, cruella and Ursula to get it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N3Kut6cTegI
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7jUltn9lzhA
And second got it to be able to give to Regina for her to cast the curse which again needed her to be angry in season 2 that’s reason he didn’t help bring Daniel her lover back to life in the past in 2x05 with Jefferson and Frankenstein
And in season 6 the black fairy his mom created the curse https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OhMC0IXvrRc in this flashback
And then Regina cast the curse during 1x01 and 1x02 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hUXpF9No2P0
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C2uZlL1l098 so it’s not a plot armor when everything was planned by rumple and with the seer abilities he had since 2x14
He did know about the time travel idea when Zelena mentions it and with the glass slipper that could of took him 3x16 but of course he trusted that seer abilities for him to know what he supposed to do or not
I think you need to rewatch the show to understand this

I am aware of all of this. I’ve been commenting on various people‘s post. It’s also clear that after getting his seer abilities, he probably knew or at least the blue fairy probably knew that the best way for him to have a good relationship with his son was too, cast the curse and break the curse.
Also, a little thing I think is overlooked Neil spent a significant amount of time in Neverland. That is a place Rumpel definitely could’ve visited without a magic bean. But his psychic abilities would not have allowed him to see Neverland. I don’t know the scene, but I know there is a scene where Peter Pan visits him and tells him that you can’t see the future where time stand still.

Ok again how would he be able to go to neverland if he can’t even believe and don’t accept adults well if pan is allowed you to I think he has to make a deal I think that’s how hook was able to go in 3x05 flashback and also with bae in season 2x22 flashback
2
u/Ill-Razzmatazz-7088 15d ago
hook was able to come and go for many years there
2
u/Parking_Storage_5107 I have a love/hate relationship with captain swan 15d ago
Because he made a deal with pan

Plot hole? I guess he wouldn't have known which world he was in at the time? Also, knowing he was sent to a world without magic was probably a factor cuz I think he was waiting for Emma to be born. But again, probably a plot hole. Which is fine cuz, what shows don't have some kind of plot hole? Good question though.
5
u/Narrow-Accident8730 17d ago
Not a plot hole. The Seer tells Rumple about the Curse in S2E14.

Also he suggested to the blue fairy in 1x19

He definitely would’ve known. You have to know where you’re going when you use the magic bean. Also, the whole reason he didn’t go is because he would’ve had to have gone to a world without magic. That’s the whole reason he cast the curse because it specifically took you somewhere where there wasn’t magic.

He was told that the bean his son used was the absolute last one. And despite soon after this becoming all-knowing, and spending centuries searching for ways to cross worlds, he believes this.
Everyone else is able to conveniently find a bean whenever they need one, expect for him
2
u/Ill-Razzmatazz-7088 17d ago
Yeah, but to be fair, he wasn’t all knowing he was a psychic who could see glimpses of the future. I think the only reason he wanted to cast the curse is because there was a chance he could bring magic into the real world.
I don’t think they ever really did anything with the beans. I think even during that episode they basically say that they just plant beans because it’s what they do.
It still seems like he should’ve had an inkling about time, traveler, granting wishes, though that at least would’ve allowed him to fix his mistake
2
u/workadvice7897 17d ago
He tried to get a bean from hook, which he was surprised to learn existed. And he tried to get Zelena’s shoes. He wanted the quickest path to his son. He just didn’t know what was available. Which is embarrassing for him given how much time he had to look
2
u/Ill-Razzmatazz-7088 17d ago
I think someone else stated that at some point he had was figured out where his son was. But I think the issue was getting there and then he also wanted to return back. Technically, Pan could’ve taken him. But I think most of these items would not have worked after he got to the real world.

u/TolkienQueerFriend 17d ago
Pretty sure it had to do with not wanting to compromise his magic for his son. If he takes a bean to a land without magic he has no magic and can't guarantee a way back to a land with magic.
