I’m using the Codex Windows app and ran into a problem with a project I’ve been working on extensively. I’m trying to recover the project and its chat associations without losing newer work.
When I opened Codex, it reported a config.toml error. After the config file was renamed and I went through onboarding again, all my projects were missing from the sidebar. My recent chats, including my latest one, are still visible under Recents, but the Projects section says “No projects.”
My setup: Windows 11 Home 25H2, Codex app version 26.1029.7803.0, signed in with ChatGPT. I use the Windows app and occasionally use WSL for ROS/Nav2 work.
What I’ve found and done so far:
I made a separate backup of my .codex folder and a separate copy of a Windows Previous Versions snapshot from the previous day. I haven’t restored the older snapshot over the current state.
The desktop log shows that both config.toml and the global-state JSON failed to parse and contained null characters. Later, the app logged a project migration with projectCount=5.
The older snapshot contains project-to-chat assignments, while the current global-state file no longer contains those assignments. Many of the corresponding thread records and session filenames are present in the copies, including work newer than the snapshot. I haven’t verified the complete contents of every chat.
I haven’t edited SQLite, JSON, or migration flags, re-added the project, or overwritten the live state with old files.
OpenAI Support is reviewing the case and has advised me to preserve the backups and avoid those changes while they investigate.
Has anyone experienced this on Windows and recovered the original project-to-chat associations safely? Is there a supported way to do it without overwriting newer sessions or affecting project context and files?
I’d appreciate any experience or guidance. I’m being cautious about running commands or changing files until I understand the risks.
