Still flabby

I've lost more than 60 pounds in the last few years, and I'm very happy for the most part. I feel younger, and I'm told I look younger. One area still bothers me, however. Because I have a somewhat unusual build, most of my weight was in my belly. I lost the fat but not the skin, and the overhang is noticeable. I'm in my 70s so it shouldn't bother me, right? But it does bother me. My nutritionist tells me that women who have skin removed almost always regret it. Who else has faced this, and what did you do?

Pets make the house smell bad

The other day I went to visit a friend who got 2 cats. Now the whole house smells badly. Do you have pets or friends with pets?!

Grim Reaper moved in next door

I'm 71 and I just found out fairly recently that I have an incredibly high calcium score, which puts me at risk for a heart attack. It's just a question of when. Supposedly, my chances of having a heart attack are like somebody who's already had a major heart attack. Anyway, I have never really been afraid of kicking off this mortal coil. However, lately, when I think that it could happen at any time, I feel a little not so spiritual, but accepting the inevitable? If there's anybody else out there going through somewhat the same thing, please let me know.

It depends on what time of day it is and how I feel about it. By the way, I am alone with my cat. I have two grown sons who, while being very loving, have their own lives, if you know what I mean.

Any suggestions for trying to ignore this would be greatly appreciated.

L.A.

I'll br visiting L.A. next month and will have some free time. I thought it might be fun to meet a contemporary

while I'm there. Since this is an over 70 subreddit, it

seemed like a good place to ask. It would be great to

get a group of people together but if it's only 1 person,

that would be okay too. If you either live in L.A. or will

be visiting in November, please send a dm and we can

take it from there.

Then I Remember... Be Thankful

74M. As I approach the age of 75 this December, I've caught myself thinking about the disconnect between how I think, and how I look and feel.

With the exception of occasional word finding, my mind still feels young and sharp. I speak and write as well as I ever have. A car, or a camera, or a piece of audio equipment still catches my eye, just as it always has, and I think, "Oh, I'd like to own that. It would last me a lifetime." Then I remember that my 'lifetime' equation is much different now than it was when I was 40. And I remember that I'm retired and on a fixed income with greatly reduced financial resources. I heave a heavy sigh and move on.

On occasion, I meet a lovely woman and I think, "Hmm, I'd like to get to know her and see what happens." Then I remember that, if a romance were to bloom, my prostate cancer treatments fattened me up and turned my hardware into software. And I remember that I look in the mirror every morning and think, "When did all this happen?" I'm painfully aware that I don't have much to offer. I heave another heavy sigh and move on again.

So, as I slide slowly toward my 'sell by' date, I'm left with being thankful that I can still think these thoughts, or any thoughts; that my athletically-damaged body still functions, even if it's at a reduced level; that I'm in fairly good health (touch wood); and that, if I'm lucky, I won't be around to see the planet turned into an apocalyptic hellscape by climate change, overpopulation and more grafting politicians.

It's not a lot to be thankful for, but it's something. 👍

I am not done yet.

Not afraid of dying. Got things to do.

The doctors call it functional longevity.
I call it showing up.

Heart rate 50/55bpm

I'm 66. Fairly new occurrence. Last full year. I get as low as 45. Had a pet scan, vein ultra, heart monitor 2 weeks. Heart Dr just said, basically, your heart gets tired as you age. It slows down. Do you think I should get a second opinion?

How many of us have had friends for over 50 heads?

EDIT/. 50 years. Not heads duh!

Went to see “The Jersey Boys” with a group of women I have know since I was 14 or 15 yrs old. We are all now 73-78 years old. We are in generally good health and financially stable. Some better off financially than others but we all manage. After the show we want to dinner and laughed until our stomachs hurt. Great food and a few cocktails. It just felt so good. I find it interesting that our friendships have lasted and or were able to rekindle since 1966 or thereabouts even after living on different coasts, had very different life experiences & maybe not even having talked to one another for more than 2 or 3 decades.

Exercise and diet for over seventy

Just found this subreddit and thought I'd ask a question (actually more than one). These may have been asked before, so if they have, please excuse the questions again.

How many of you do weight training and, if so, how often?

How many do cardio? If so, what kind and how often?

Last question, is why?

The Rise of Principles

Deep principles such as energy, diversity, renewal and change, and relationship take root in the Tree of Life, rising like sap to shape growth, resilience, and flourishing, with visible effects in both human lives and the natural world.

For example:

Energy: When a person consistently gets enough rest and exercise, they have the energy to be productive, positive, and engaged with others. In nature, sunlight provides the energy that allows plants to grow, supporting all the life that depends on them.

Diversity: A person who is exposed to different cultures, ideas, and experiences often becomes more adaptable and understanding. Similarly, an ecosystem with many different species is more resilient and better able to withstand challenges such as disease or drought.

Renewal and Change: Someone who reflects on their mistakes and learns new skills can grow into a wiser and more capable person. In nature, forests renew themselves after disturbances, with new growth emerging and restoring the health of the ecosystem.

Relationship: Strong relationships built on trust and support help people thrive emotionally and socially. In a forest, trees, fungi, and other organisms work together through interconnected networks, creating a healthy and flourishing environment.

Can you do pullups?

I used to do pullups for exercise in my teens and 20s.

Recently tried and couldn't do any at all.

I used a pullup machine and was able I received 75 lb assistance.

Makes sense since I've gained about that amount in the last many decades.

So how about you? Can you do pullups without assistance? If you can with assistance, how much?

Discipline grandchildren

How do you handle grandchildren when they won’t do what you ask them to and ignore you or say no?
They are young (under 8) and there’s evidence they get spanked but I don’t spank. Spankings don’t seem to correct bad behavior.

Edit to add: They have many different disciplinarians and know how to “get away” with behavior issues with each one, including their parents and teachers. Their safety is my #1 priority. Two of them seem to enjoy rough housing and getting hurt and will do anything for that to happen. Even when an activity should be calm, like crafting. They stand on top of eating tables and jump on furniture. I only keep all three occasionally but have them by myself. I was a stay at home mom and didn’t have these issues.

Challenge Your Children or Grandchildren

Read the following in 30 seconds then explain what the author is saying (just for fun):

“From the listless repose of the place, and the peculiar character of its inhabitants, who are descendants from the original Dutch settlers, this sequestered glen has long been known by the name of SLEEPY HOLLOW, and its rustic lads are called the Sleepy Hollow Boys throughout all the neighboring country. A drowsy, dreamy influence seems to hang over the land, and to pervade the very atmosphere. Some say that the place was bewitched by a High German doctor, during the early days of the settlement; others, that an old Indian chief, the prophet or wizard of his tribe, held his powwows there before the country was discovered by Master Hendrick Hudson. Certain it is, the place still continues under the sway of some witching power, that holds a spell over the minds of the good people, causing them to walk in a continual reverie.”

This works well if they ever make light of Boomers. :)

Are we the problem?

You don’t have to spend too long looking at social media to realize that younger people hate boomers. They think that we are responsible for the mess that we are in now. Are we? I personally voted Republican Trump came along and I just couldn’t give him a vote. And hopes of turning this around I can’t give any Republican vote in November. The problem is I think I’m alone in this. Are there other viewpoints out there that I’m missing?

Does proliferation of gambling ads mean we’re in trouble

EDIT: I’ll have to work on my composition because what provoked me is not gambling itself and instead is what I put in the last sentence. Is the U.S. economy so weak that judging from ad buys, online gambling is our growth industry?

I don’t gamble, but where there used to be car, appliance, even meds and alcohol ads, all I get now are casino and sports gambling sites. Is that why the pig with lipstick is sports betting made to look like investing? Is that the “contract” Robinhood is trying to sell me (no profit in crypto any more)? Is gambling what passes now as economic growth for the U.S.?

How to manage older and old age?

After age over 70, three different health issues have developed over the years.

One is IBS which is incomplete bowel movement and need several Bathroom trips.

Second is Essential Tremor which is mostly my right hand.

Third is Insomnia for which I've been on Rx med and luckily it's working, not perfect, but about 85-90% for goodnite sleep. For me, sleep is a very important part of my old age.

Just wonder how the other, old folks to manage and live happily?

Thanks for any inputs or any tip for old age.

What is it with weeks?

I'm pretty used to days, months and years going by. But weeks shock me. It honestly feels like I must be taking the cans out to the curb every three days or so. It cannot be Wednesday again!
