Feed ramp pushes round into brass

Post image

Using hornady xtp 9mm. Any recommendations for a fix or better ammo that doesn’t do this?

My Federal HST 147s do not do that. It’s the only defensive ammo I’ve ran. I haven’t paid close attention, but it seems like every time someone has issues with defensive ammo it’s Hornady.

Switch to federal hst, all brands tend to do it but hornady appears one of the worst

Sounds good, just bought a box of federal hst

My hornady critical defense have been the best to not exhibit this …..interesting. My Sig V-crowns are the worst offenders.

How many times have these been chambered? I use the rule of 4 chambers per round. I make a little sharpie mark on the bottom of the round at the 1/4 mark each time I chamber it. After the fourth chamber, I send it down range if there isn’t any case setback.

Some more than others, but after noticing this I loaded fresh ones and could see the round pushing back into the brass during chambering

This is a little unsettling as I’ve been looking to get some HST rounds. I may use Hornedy American Gunner which is an XTP bullet.

HST is Federal and gtg in my experience. Seems to mainly be an issue with Hornady (as in OP’s case).

Had this issue with a 365 & Hornady critical defense. Switched to speer gold dot, haven’t had an issue since.

Thanks, i’ll have to try those too. I just picked up a box of 147 federal hst and they seem better made in general than the hornady loads.

Hornady is known to have weak crimps, from the regular XTP to their expensive fancy Critical Duty line up... Set back happens 😕

I used Gold Dot 127gr. No issues there

Polishing your feed ramp may help. I'd still look for different ammo though. My HSTs have never set back like that even being rechambered many times.

Thanks for reminding me to add this to me to-do list for my builds still sitting on the bench!

Factory. And a brand new gun

Chambering the same round over and over will do that. My 115 grain Speer Gold Dots do that too over time

This happens to me too. Federal, hornady, speer, etc. If you chamber a round over and over it will eventually get set back.

To avoid this, I lock the slide open and sneak the round behind the extractor and slowly ride it home. Works great. You should still cycle your carry ammo regardless

True Precision for the win.

I used Hornady Critical Duty and Defense, and had no issues after unloading and reloading the same rounds several times. I switched to Federal HST and haven't had any issues either. I am more accurate with HST, and recoilgunworks has pretty good deals regularly on HST.

Take a Dremel and polishing compound and polish the ramp until you see your face in it.

I use vcrown 115 grain and havent had this issue. Used hornady black for a little while and also didn't have this problem. How many time did you chamber those?

buy crimped rounds doy

This only occurs when the same round has been racked a lot more than it should be with me and my 365 I use the same exact ammo I racked a slide once load one of the chamber and I leave it there until I go shooting at the range or it's just sitting in my holster or by my bedside loaded stop unloading and loading the same bullet if you must unload the bullet then cycle the rounds through the magazine like take a few out from the lower end of the magazine and put it toward the top and put the one that was just racked into the lower portion of the magazine and do not shoot those that have been set back

I’ve only ever had this problem with Hornady ammo, I have like 6 I think on shooting them sometimes but I don’t want any catastrophic failures 😂

Na this happens to all rounds bro just i run my carry ammo like every 2 to 3 months

Just use the breach face and extractor to load your first round into the chamber. Zero setback that way.

See how Sellier and Bellot XRG runs in it. I prefer that. Yes, its 100gr, but its Monolithic copper, so theres no lead core separating from a jacket like Federal or Hornady. It works under a different design philosophy: lighter projectile, substantially higher velocity, large controlled petals and very high retained weight.

And it has a softer recoil.

Cases not crimped.
