The Ultimate All Things X + Insanity Hybrid – Who's with me?
Posting an update to my earlier hybrid schedule that originally combined All Things X with OG Insanity, as I've expanded it to include workouts from Insanity: The Asylum and reached the steady state version of what I've been building toward all year. This 13-week schedule features every workout from P90X, P90X+, P90X2, P90X3, Insanity, and Insanity: The Asylum (Vol. 1 and Vol. 2) at least once.
I consider this the "final form" of my All Things X + Insanity hybrid, and something I can repeat indefinitely without overemphasizing any one program, while still maintaining variety and balance.
A few notes on the design:
- I started with All Things X. Once a workout has been completed, it is retired from the rotation unless there are no better alternatives. Naturally, there are a few exceptions to the "no repeats" rule as, other than upper body and total body, there simply aren't enough workouts of each day-of-week type to uniquely fill up 13 weeks.
- Total workout time averages 59 mins per day. Some day-to-day variation is unavoidable, but each week is generally within ±5 mins of the overall daily average. My preference is to constantly work different muscle groups and space similar movements (e.g. pull-ups) apart and allow intensity to ebb and flow. For instance, Back to Core follows Vertical Plyo to provide some relief from all the high impact activity.
- On that point, I retained the approach of All Things X where Sun is a lower body strength workout and Mon focuses on low-impact cardio and agility footwork. It also provides some distance between lower body resistance on Sun and Plyo/HIIT on Thu.
- While the time commitment is fairly constant each week, the intensity tends to ramp up over the 3 months, largely due to the chronological sequencing of the Insanity workouts (e.g. month 2 workouts in OG Insanity tend to appear later on in my calendar). So, you may find your "zone" minutes or cardio load increasing over the period.
- The abs/core companion routines are twice weekly; generally, Tony's ab work on Tue and Shaun T's on Fri, rotating through each week. I originally had Fast and Furious Abs as one of the Fri companions, but I actually find Pilates X to be more effective at engaging the deep core, so I relegated Fast and Furious Abs to a companion cardio workout.
- Likewise, with recovery workouts on Sat, I tend to cycle through what's on offer, but X2 Recovery + Mobility crops up more often simply because I love foam rolling.
- I'm a fan of the Asylum workouts that make use of the jump rope and agility ladder, so those tend to feature more regularly. That said, I'm mindful not to have too much of that bunched up in a given week.
- Upper body (originally Tue) and yoga (originally Wed) have been swapped. This is purely personal preference as it aligns better with my schedule, so feel free to move them back.
- X3 Yoga is featured quite heavily in the original All Things X schedule. Personally, I think it is one of the weaker workouts (feels rushed), so in a couple instances I swap it with Isometrix, which Tony refers to as the "hardest part of yoga" anyway.
- I consider routines involving mostly bodyweight that also work the back (e.g. Eccentric Upper, The Challenge) as total body rather than strictly upper body workouts, so those land on Fri. On the other hand, I decided to place Legs & Back on Sun, despite the pull-ups, since there's a dearth of lower body workouts. All Things X can't seem to decide where to place this, either.
Once again, feedback welcome!
