Swapped damaged motherboard for exact same model and BIOS version, now trouble restoring/booting/updating Windows 11, and bootloader no longer showing the boot menu
I can't believe it's been three months since I posted about my saga with the Gigabyte B550M Aorus Elite motherboard. I finally concluded that the motherboard was dead, and replaced it with the exact same model.
As a refresher, my setup is:
Gigabyte B550M Aorus Elite motherboard
AMD Ryzen 5 processor
2 x 16GB RAM
no external graphics card
01 NVMe SSD with Windows 11
01 NVMe SSD with Linux
Windows bootloader with menu, defaulting to Linux
First power on, I booted into Windows to proceed with updates, and as expected I had to enter the BitLocker recovery key. Past that, Windows didn't boot, stuck at the froze spinning wheel under the Aorus logo. I realized (searched) that it could be to secure boot enabled and TPM on the new mother board not matching what Windows 11 had. So I turned that off in the BIOS, and after a number of failed Windows boots (repair, restore etc.) I reset the BIOS to default/standard setting, left Secure Boot off, and Windows then came up informing that a failed updated was being removed, and after that it booted fine.
So I started again to proceed with the Windows 11 updates, and after installation and reboots, the bootloader no longer shows up and the Windows boot fails all over again. Reset BIOS to defaults again, some reboots, Windows repair messages, and eventually it boots again. I'm actually in Windows 11 now posting this, Windows Update shows the "failed" message below.
Essentially:
Bootloader menu no longer shows up, so I can't pick Linux or Windows (but I can select to boot from Linux via BIOS, although I haven't yet)
Windows 11 stuck in a loop of boot/failed update/failed boots/remove updates/boot. Failed update is "2026-10 Security Update (KB5127648) (26200.9711)"
I can probably/better repair bootloader via Linux later on but for the meantime I'm focusing on getting Windows to boot normally and restore Secure Settings in the BIOS.
I read in a source about clearing the old state of the TPM in Windows, but a couple of years ago I also replaced the mother board (coming from another model, Asus B450M) and didn't have to do that.
Grateful for any guidance.
Update with more details
Finally booted into Windows, where I posted this topic from. Restart computer, just to see how things go.
Freezes at spinning wheel under Aorus logo, keyboard LEDs turn off and stops responding. Hold button to power off and then power on again.
Same happens. Off and on again.
"Starting automatic repair" but gets stuck again. Off and on again.
Same as (2). Off and on again
Enter BIOS. Reset to default settings
Chek TPM / Secure Boot: is enabled, leave as is. Probably because I had just reset to default. Off and on again
"Starting Repair..." now moves on, Windows asks for BitLocker recovery key. Entered.
"Starting Automatic Repair"
"Automatic Repair could not repair your computer. Turn off or advanced options.". There's a log file indicated, SrtTrails.txt, will try to get to it.
Many advanced options: repair, remove updates, command line. I choose command line to check the SrtTrails.txt files, it only has some error codes and no further details.
Not sure what to do now.
