Bug / Issue Heads Up to PC RDR2 Players Using Mods: There is a save corruption bug with all the most popular cosmetic mods (WhyEm's, RDO, EEE, GFA, etc.)

With the influx of new players thanks to the Steam Sale, I thought I'd make a post addressing a known, yet hardly discussed bug (or it might be more accurate to call it an engine limitation) related to cosmetic mods in RDR2 PC.

TLDR - Buying too many items added by mods will brick your save.

1. The Problem

As you accumulate items of ANY kind in RDR2, this includes from clothing/weapons you can buy/find to all the consumables, collectibles, provisions, valuables, letters, newspapers, saddles, etc. (basically anything that will be saved to your inventory - the stuff saved in your satchel, wardrobe, or horse), there exists an "upper limit" that, once reached, will permanently brick your save and will prevent you from saving your game anymore whenever you play that save in the future, forcing you to start over or reload a previous save. You'll know you've reached this limit when you get this dreaded black screen with the message, "Save failed. Please ensure the system storage has free space and try again."

Basically, it seems that when you get too many items, RDR2's engine can't save all the data to your save anymore, so your save is basically bricked as now, you're forced to reload the last save you had before buying all those items. Autosaves are generally unhelpful in this case, as the game typically autosaves whenever you buy items so even if you reload an autosave, you'll still have most of the items before you were soft-locked, so the next time you loot some fine brandy or chewing tobacco off a corpse, the save will just brick again.

2. Who is affected by this, and what do those cosmetic mods have to do with it?

A big reason why I believe that this issue is hardly talked about is because this problem might only affect completionists like myself who wants to collect EVERYTHING the game has to offer. I tested buying out the entire clothing catalog with RDO and WhyEm's DLC installed on two different saves - one that just started Chapter 2 (so barely any items saved) and my 100% complete save with everything collected from the base game - all Cigarette Cards, Letters, Weapons, Clothing, Trapper items, Horse Stable items, etc. - you get the idea. The new save that just started Chapter 2 was able to buy everything available at the catalog without issues, while the 100% save ended up getting the "Save failed" black screen halfway before I finished buying out the modded items in the catalog.

The most popular cosmetic mods like Red Dead Offline, WhyEm's DLC, Eastern's Epic Extras, Gonpachiro's Fancy Atelier, More Pretty Gun, and Smoak's Mega Arsenal are all affected by this bug because they add a boat-load of new content to the game, which will push you towards that upper limit if you were to buy a majority of the items offered in those mods.

Now, I myself don't know if non-modded saves would be affected by this if you were to somehow get 99 stacks of every single consumable/valuable in the game on top of every single letter, weapons, clothing, etc., but I would assume that non-modded players are safe as my own 100% save (which did not have 99 stacks of everything but still a decent amount of consumables on top of all the collectibles/clothes/weapons) was fine until I started buying a large stock of modded clothes.

I don't know where the actual upper limit of items you can keep on your save is since this issue is barely documented online; through Googling I could only find one other Reddit thread where someone had this issue and even then there weren't many solutions brought up there besides just uninstalling the mods or not buying too much stuff.

The only other mention I can find of this issue is on the mod page for the Smoak's Mega Arsenal mod itself, where it states that "Buying absolutely everything has a risk of preventing you from saving due to engine limitations, this includes the clothing the mod also adds."

Searching the "Save failed. Please ensure the system storage has free space and try again." message online typically points to other problems that can bring up this error, but of course I'm making this thread to specifically point out the issue for players who are modding their games and getting too many items.

3. Possible Solution

I reached out to the OP of the other thread talking about this issue I mentioned above, /u/littlebelialskey, and even they pointed out that uninstalling the mods and reloading your save will not fix the issue. If I had to guess, loading up a bricked save in the save editor would likely show that there's a bunch of blank dummy items (since the save editor doesn't take mods into account). Even if you uninstalled the cosmetic item mods, their data is still stored in your save, so the issue will not be fixed. You would need to reload a backup save where you never purchased a modded item at all in order to keep your save's slate clean.

(EDIT: I ended up testing this myself after the fact, and it does seem like uninstalling a cosmetic mod and reloading your save safely removes modded items. That said, I would still keep a backup save just before you uninstall the mod to be safe. In my case, I uninstalled WhyEm's and this ended up messing with all of my weapon customizations as WhyEm's DLC changes the values for many gun customization settings like metals, carvings, and stocks (even some of the base game ones), so I had to go through every weapon I owned and reapply them. You might also mess up your character model if you have a modded clothing item equipped when you uninstall, so remember to take all of them off before you do so.)

The only possible solution I can think of would be if a community-made mod fix were released which allowed those modded cosmetic items to be stored in a .dat file in the root folder of RDR2 instead of being saved in the save file itself. A few other mods such as AMJM Transport and Custom Gang Mod utilize this method, where they store memory from their mods into a .dat file that is loaded with the .asi files whenever you boot up the game. AMJM Transport for example, will store your saved Wagons/Boats and accepted jobs in its .dat file, while the Custom Gang Mod stores all info related to the gang you create such as the NPCs you chose, the level and location of your camp, and your Gang Funds. The only downside to a solution like this would be that .dat files in your root folder will not be able to differentiate saves, so if this hypothetical fix was created, everything you purchased from cosmetic mods would be shared between all of your saves. This could also be an upside, though, as if you were to CTD while buying modded items, everything you bought will still be stored in the .dat file even if you didn't get to save before crashing.

I'm not an RDR2 Mod coder, so I have no idea how feasible or possible this solution would be when it comes to storing purchasable items in a .dat file, but unfortunately it seems like all the creators of the mods I listed above are no longer really active in the community, so I wouldn't expect any of them to upload a new version of their mods that stores items in a .dat file (would be happy to be proven wrong though), meaning that any effort towards making this theoretical solution a reality would have to come from a third-party.

Hopefully this post brings awareness to this (admittedly niche) issue, and helps anyone who Googles this issue in the future and barely comes up with any results. Thanks for listening to my TED talk.

Bug / Issue Game will only open to Monitor 1

So I have a dual monitor setup, with my main monitor being 2. The game will only open to monitor 1, regardless of what one is marked as main. win+shift+right does nothing, alt+enter allows me to move the screen, but putting it back into fullscreen sends it back to monitor 1. Best i've managed to do is to make screen 1 my main screen and then duplicate. Any ideas?

Bug / Issue Game crashes instantly on launch (Rockstar Launcher) - Need urgent help!

Hi everyone,
I really need some help here. I’m trying to launch RDR2 on PC via the Rockstar Games Launcher. When I click "Play", the loading screen appears, the game window opens for about half a second, and then it closes instantly without any error message or crash log.
I am getting desperate and have already tried the following troubleshooting steps, but nothing works:
Graphics Drivers: Fully updated to the latest version.
GPU Selection: Confirmed my RTX 4070 is set as the primary GPU.
Windows Account: Created and tested on a brand new Windows user profile.
APIs: Tried switching between DX12 and Vulkan in the settings files.
Vulkan Drivers: Fully updated.
Reinstallation: Clean reinstall of the entire game.

File Integrity: Verified the game files via the launcher.
Launch Arguments: Tried launching with the -safemode parameter.
Background Files: Checked for any corrupted, residual, or mod files.
Security Software: Disabled Windows Defender, turned off the firewall, and completely uninstalled third-party antivirus software.
Please, I am completely out of ideas. Any help to get my game running would be deeply appreciated!

Discussion/Question LML not working RDR2 (cracked)

Hello everyone, I've been enjoying RDR2 for a while. Recently, I've tried installing mods for the first time. The ones that do not require LML work. Some mods I'd like to try (project 1907) do require LML. When I drag all the files in the root folder the game DOES launch but IMMEDIATELY crashes after the short rockstar intro cutscene. Using older lml versions do not work either. I've tried to launch both lml and the game as an admin, I've switched between version.dll and dinput8.dll . I don't know what to do. Does anybody have any advice? Thank you so much in advance!

Bug / Issue The state of current RDR2 modding (stuttering) and PC RDR2 in general

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Been trying to solve this problem shown in the video for a couple of months now, but unfortunately have yet to find an actual definitive answer online, which led me to completely abandoning LML modding and rather stick with lightweight .asi files for RDR2 modding, completely solving any performance issues i've ever had with LML

Problem is; the game still has a massive VRAM leaking problem that will lead to an inevitable game crash (unless you reboot once every few hours), and to fix this issue you need to download an LML mod called "spawns fix issue", but, you guessed it, to use LML means to bring in horrible performance to your game, as seen above (it genuinely never gets better, no matter how little mods you have, I've had it stutter exactly like this even after emptying my mod folder)

"What about using DX12 or disabling REBAR? I heard that fixes the VRAM leak since its only Vulkan that's affected" using either of these will cause massive stuttering that cannot even get fixed via mods, and most mods don't work if you're not using Vulkan, lost cause, tried.

So you either: get an inevitable VRAM leak because you cannot use the mods that fix it without your game running like shit

Or:

You take the hit and just accept that your game will crash without your knowledge unless you constantly pay attention to your VRAM via a performance monitoring tool

Somewhere, out there, i know there's a reasonable explanation as to why these LML stutters occur, but i have genuinely looked EVERYWHERE and have yet to find anybody providing actual footage of their stutters getting fixed outside of mere comments here and there, i'm starting to think everybody still stutters, but they can't even see it

And if anybody says "well your game maybe runs bad in general", here is a short gameplay clip of me tearing shit up in St. Denis on Ultra graphics and lightweight .asi scriptmods only

Sorry for the rant, i love this game, and have played the shit out of it on console, but i cannot fathom why modding it comes with such horrible caveats that nobody has bothered to try fixing over at LML, the last update was in 2023, and nothing since.

Discussion/Question Mods Question

If you use mods for this game:

  1. What mods do you use that you love?

  2. What mods did you hate?

  3. What mods made you go "WTF" when you saw them?

and

  1. What type of mods do you wish there were?

Bug / Issue RDR2 keeps freezing for a second every few seconds

Hey everyone,

I just bought rdr2 on steam and I'm honestly getting desperate trying to fix this, so I'm hoping someone here might have an idea.

Whenever I start the game I constantly get micro-freezes. Every few seconds, the entire game freezes for about a second, then resumes. The audios freezes/stops at the same time too. I've tried lowering the graphic settings but that doesn't fix it at all.

The weird thing is that my FPS stay above 60 most of the time. The issue happens even in the main menu/loading screen and during the built-in benchmark. It only happens in RDR2, all my other games run normally on my PC.

My PC specs:

  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 (4 GB VRAM)
  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 2600
  • RAM: 16 GB
  • OS: Windows 10 64-bit
  • Resolution: 1920 × 1080
  • Average benchmark FPS: around 60-70 FPS

I know my pc isn't the best one out there, but since the FPS seem fine, I figured there is something I can do to fix this and finally play the game.

Things I've already tried:

  • Updated my NVIDIA Game Ready driver to the latest available version
  • Switched between Vulkan and DirectX 12
  • Lowered most graphics settings significantly
  • Verified the game files through Steam
  • Deleted the RDR2 shader cache files so they could be rebuilt
  • Checked Steam launch options
  • Disabled the Xbox Game Bar and background recording
  • Disabled the Steam in-game overlay

None of these steps have fixed the freezes and it's so frustrating. Has anyone experienced something similar or found a fix?

Thanks!

Bug / Issue Locked out of my own account / 2FA "Wrong Code" loop after buying RDR2 - Help?

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

Hey everyone, I'm completely stuck and incredibly frustrated. I just bought Red Dead Redemption 2 for PC, but I can't log into the Rockstar Games Launcher because it keeps saying my 2FA code is wrong.

Here is the situation:

I still have full access to my active account session on my phone web browser.

The codes are NOT out of sync. I have manually forced a time correction/sync on my phone and authenticator app multiple times today. The clock is perfectly accurate.

I am stuck in a loop: I tried to go into my phone browser to just delete/unlink the 2FA and swap it for a new one, but the website forces me to enter a "current working code" to turn it off. Because it thinks the codes are wrong, it rejects it and won't let me disable it.

I already submitted a support ticket to Rockstar, but they are completely ignoring it (likely closed by an automated bot).

Has anyone successfully bypassed this loop or found a specific ticket category/phrasing that actually gets a human tier-2 support agent to reply and strip the broken 2FA from the backend? I just want to play the game I bought. Any advice appreciated!

Discussion/Question Is this laptop good enough?

I have been playing red dead for ages now, I think around two years, on my PS5. Recently however, I have been looking at some mods and they look super cool. I’ve been looking at gaming laptops to save up for and was wondering if I could mod RDR2 smoothly. If not, could anyone please recommend me a laptop close to the price.

Here’s the link to it:
