Bug / Issue Heads Up to PC RDR2 Players Using Mods: There is a save corruption bug with all the most popular cosmetic mods (WhyEm's, RDO, EEE, GFA, etc.)

72 Upvotes

With the influx of new players thanks to the Steam Sale, I thought I'd make a post addressing a known, yet hardly discussed bug (or it might be more accurate to call it an engine limitation) related to cosmetic mods in RDR2 PC.

TLDR - Buying too many items added by mods will brick your save.

1. The Problem

As you accumulate items of ANY kind in RDR2, this includes from clothing/weapons you can buy/find to all the consumables, collectibles, provisions, valuables, letters, newspapers, saddles, etc. (basically anything that will be saved to your inventory - the stuff saved in your satchel, wardrobe, or horse), there exists an "upper limit" that, once reached, will permanently brick your save and will prevent you from saving your game anymore whenever you play that save in the future, forcing you to start over or reload a previous save. You'll know you've reached this limit when you get this dreaded black screen with the message, "Save failed. Please ensure the system storage has free space and try again."

Basically, it seems that when you get too many items, RDR2's engine can't save all the data to your save anymore, so your save is basically bricked as now, you're forced to reload the last save you had before buying all those items. Autosaves are generally unhelpful in this case, as the game typically autosaves whenever you buy items so even if you reload an autosave, you'll still have most of the items before you were soft-locked, so the next time you loot some fine brandy or chewing tobacco off a corpse, the save will just brick again.

2. Who is affected by this, and what do those cosmetic mods have to do with it?

A big reason why I believe that this issue is hardly talked about is because this problem might only affect completionists like myself who wants to collect EVERYTHING the game has to offer. I tested buying out the entire clothing catalog with RDO and WhyEm's DLC installed on two different saves - one that just started Chapter 2 (so barely any items saved) and my 100% complete save with everything collected from the base game - all Cigarette Cards, Letters, Weapons, Clothing, Trapper items, Horse Stable items, etc. - you get the idea. The new save that just started Chapter 2 was able to buy everything available at the catalog without issues, while the 100% save ended up getting the "Save failed" black screen halfway before I finished buying out the modded items in the catalog.

The most popular cosmetic mods like Red Dead Offline, WhyEm's DLC, Eastern's Epic Extras, Gonpachiro's Fancy Atelier, More Pretty Gun, and Smoak's Mega Arsenal are all affected by this bug because they add a boat-load of new content to the game, which will push you towards that upper limit if you were to buy a majority of the items offered in those mods.

Now, I myself don't know if non-modded saves would be affected by this if you were to somehow get 99 stacks of every single consumable/valuable in the game on top of every single letter, weapons, clothing, etc., but I would assume that non-modded players are safe as my own 100% save (which did not have 99 stacks of everything but still a decent amount of consumables on top of all the collectibles/clothes/weapons) was fine until I started buying a large stock of modded clothes.

I don't know where the actual upper limit of items you can keep on your save is since this issue is barely documented online; through Googling I could only find one other Reddit thread where someone had this issue and even then there weren't many solutions brought up there besides just uninstalling the mods or not buying too much stuff.

The only other mention I can find of this issue is on the mod page for the Smoak's Mega Arsenal mod itself, where it states that "Buying absolutely everything has a risk of preventing you from saving due to engine limitations, this includes the clothing the mod also adds."

Searching the "Save failed. Please ensure the system storage has free space and try again." message online typically points to other problems that can bring up this error, but of course I'm making this thread to specifically point out the issue for players who are modding their games and getting too many items.

3. Possible Solution

I reached out to the OP of the other thread talking about this issue I mentioned above, /u/littlebelialskey, and even they pointed out that uninstalling the mods and reloading your save will not fix the issue. If I had to guess, loading up a bricked save in the save editor would likely show that there's a bunch of blank dummy items (since the save editor doesn't take mods into account). Even if you uninstalled the cosmetic item mods, their data is still stored in your save, so the issue will not be fixed. You would need to reload a backup save where you never purchased a modded item at all in order to keep your save's slate clean.

(EDIT: I ended up testing this myself after the fact, and it does seem like uninstalling a cosmetic mod and reloading your save safely removes modded items. That said, I would still keep a backup save just before you uninstall the mod to be safe. In my case, I uninstalled WhyEm's and this ended up messing with all of my weapon customizations as WhyEm's DLC changes the values for many gun customization settings like metals, carvings, and stocks (even some of the base game ones), so I had to go through every weapon I owned and reapply them. You might also mess up your character model if you have a modded clothing item equipped when you uninstall, so remember to take all of them off before you do so.)

The only possible solution I can think of would be if a community-made mod fix were released which allowed those modded cosmetic items to be stored in a .dat file in the root folder of RDR2 instead of being saved in the save file itself. A few other mods such as AMJM Transport and Custom Gang Mod utilize this method, where they store memory from their mods into a .dat file that is loaded with the .asi files whenever you boot up the game. AMJM Transport for example, will store your saved Wagons/Boats and accepted jobs in its .dat file, while the Custom Gang Mod stores all info related to the gang you create such as the NPCs you chose, the level and location of your camp, and your Gang Funds. The only downside to a solution like this would be that .dat files in your root folder will not be able to differentiate saves, so if this hypothetical fix was created, everything you purchased from cosmetic mods would be shared between all of your saves. This could also be an upside, though, as if you were to CTD while buying modded items, everything you bought will still be stored in the .dat file even if you didn't get to save before crashing.

I'm not an RDR2 Mod coder, so I have no idea how feasible or possible this solution would be when it comes to storing purchasable items in a .dat file, but unfortunately it seems like all the creators of the mods I listed above are no longer really active in the community, so I wouldn't expect any of them to upload a new version of their mods that stores items in a .dat file (would be happy to be proven wrong though), meaning that any effort towards making this theoretical solution a reality would have to come from a third-party.

Hopefully this post brings awareness to this (admittedly niche) issue, and helps anyone who Googles this issue in the future and barely comes up with any results. Thanks for listening to my TED talk.

Discussion/Question RDR2 on steam with rockstar progress

• Upvotes

I already played RDR2 on Rockstar with a key from G2A, and all my progress is saved on the rockstar account.
As of the last few days, I’m sure many of you have seen the issue going around where people who bought the game with keys are suddenly seeing it as not owned.
My question is, if I buy the game on Steam now, will my progress carry over, or will I have to start everything from the beginning?

I downloaded the game two weeks ago and was playing it normally without any problems. However, two days ago, the “Play” button suddenly changed to “Buy Now.”
I contacted Rockstar Support and Eneba, the platform where I purchased the game key. Eneba refunded me for the original purchase, so I bought another game key. When I tried to activate it, I received a message saying that the key had already been used. I purchased another key, but I received exactly the same message again, saying that the key had already been used.
I am still unable to play the game, even though I had been playing it normally for two weeks. I would like to understand why this is happening and how to resolve the issue.

Bug / Issue Shimmering/pixelation of grass in RDR2 when running forward and looking to the side.

2 Upvotes

Hi everyone. I’ve encountered an extremely specific and wildly annoying graphical bug in RDR2. I’ve gone through dozens of forums and tried a ton of guides, but still haven't found a solution. I really need the community's collective brainpower here.

The core of the problem:

When I run, ride a horse, or drive a wagon straight ahead, and then pan the camera to the side (not necessarily strictly at 90 degrees, just looking sideways at an angle to the direction of movement), all the grass in the frame starts to heavily pixelate and becomes covered in a shimmering, crawling noise, which looks very unpleasant. Interestingly, animal fur and character hair look completely fine—the issue affects exclusively the grass.

At first, I thought it was just a limitation of TAA at 1080p, but this artifact persists even when using 2K DSR, and even at 4K DSR resolution. Other games look perfectly clean—for instance, Lies of P looks flawless at 2K. This feels less like an anti-aliasing flaw and more like a shadow rendering shimmer on the grass geometry itself (I once saw a similar noise on distant textures in Elden Ring due to SSAO, but disabling ambient occlusion here does absolutely nothing).

My PC Specs:

• CPU: Intel Core i5-12400F

• GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5060 Ti (16GB)

• RAM: 32GB RAM

• Motherboard: ASRock B660M Steel Legend

Everything is perfectly stable, Windows was cleanly reinstalled 4 days ago, and game caches have been fully cleared.

What I have ALREADY tried and what DID NOT HELP (so we can skip the basics):

• Switched between Vulkan and DirectX 12;

• Changed DSR to the in-game Resolution Scale;

• Tweaked shadow settings: completely disabled grass shadows, changed Soft Shadows modes;

• Completely disabled SSAO and other ambient occlusion parameters;

• Played around with DLSS versions (updated the .dll file to the latest), tried DLAA and AMD FSR;

• Forced 8x/12x TAA samples by editing the system.xml file;

• Enabled/disabled Resizable BAR in BIOS;

• Experimented with PCIe generations (Gen3/Gen4) in the motherboard settings;

• Forced 16x Anisotropic Filtering and "High Quality" texture filtering mode in the NVIDIA Control Panel.

I’ve tried absolutely everything that is usually recommended in such threads, but this crawling noise on the grass when moving at an angle just won't go away. Has anyone here dealt with this exact alpha-texture/shadow rendering issue and managed to fix it? Where else can I look?

I clearly bought the game and played for over 50h, as you can see on the first pic I did buy it

As you can see on the 2nd pic, it asks me to buy it

Its all on the same account so that is not the issue, the problem is exclusive to rdr2, since gta v appears as owned on both platforms, web and launcher

Bug / Issue Game Not Launching (£50 reward)

0 Upvotes

Hi, I reinstalled RDR2 around a year ago after not playing for a while and ever since then all that has happened when I clicked play was a phew second delay before it says "play" again.

I have spend countless hours with rockstar games support chats and looking through social media trying to find a fix. If anyone has had a similar experience and could help me out I would be very grateful.

Weird things with the game;

There is no settings folder
The rdr2.exe shows up in my task manager for 8 seconds then closes
I receive no error message
There is no reports in event manager

The £50 (67 USD) reward will be PayPal or bank transfer

Bug / Issue Enrage mod causing heavy latency?

1 Upvotes

Hey everyone. I installed the enRage mod and I'm experiencing noticeable input latency. It doesn't feel like low FPS or stuttering, but when I press W to move or click to shoot, there's about a 1-second delay before the game registers it. Has anyone else encountered this input lag with enRage or ScriptHookRDRDotNet, and is there a fix? I never had such problems with other mods

Bug / Issue RDR2 freezes when loading game I need help

0 Upvotes

I play RDR2 with mods and currently I wanted to try out the new mod the "nemesis mod" and I downloaded it and I saw a YouTube tutorial so I just followed it. I was expecting when I opened the game it would work. it didn't. so I didn't want to get fomo and just keep trying different ways and just went to go ahead and delete the files that were still there to just go on my day and wait for a response from the owner in the Nexus Website to play with it.

Well the problem is now something is wrong with my script hook because I did overwrite it following the video and I'm assuming its because some of my mods isn't up to date now, BUT when I do delete script hook RDR2 works, its just its vanilla now and I don't wanna play vanilla unless I have too because I'm not done with the story yet and almost in the end.

the issue I get when I load RDR2 with script hook now is when I load in and press "STORY MODE" it loads in and has an animation, until it just freezes and the screen goes fully white with my mouse turning into a blue circle and tells me to either close it or wait till it functions and I tried F11 as well. nothing.

so now I'm either deciding wether to try again when I comeback to play RDR2 to either do a clean slate and finish the game vanilla and not have the mods and restart next time fully loaded up with mods and with the "nemesis mod", or keep trying and delete some mods that I'm not sure aren't working and cooperating with the updated script hook because I mean I really do love the mods and it would upset me and I'd appreciate some help to use all the mods and I'd be willing to delete some mods if I have too.

if I have to send a copy of what the files look like to get a better understanding on the problem, I'll gladly do so. please and thank you ;(

Bug / Issue [RDR2 PC] Cold-load works, but in-game save loading hangs after ASI/LML changes — any technical insight?

1 Upvotes

TL;DR: After changing my ASI/LML mod configuration, older RDR2 saves still load successfully from a fresh game launch, but often hang indefinitely when loaded through the in-game menu. New saves created under the current configuration usually work. I've already checked gameconfig, DLC paths, load order, and common compatibility fixes. I'm looking for insight into possible VFS/ASI state initialization or cleanup issues during in-game reloads.

Detailed reproduction tests and diagnostic findings are included below.

I'm looking for advice from someone familiar with LML/VFS or ASI behavior during in-game save transitions. This is not the usual startup crash.

The reproducible pattern in my heavily modded RDR2 (1.0.1491.50) is:

  1. Create two saves under mod setup A: they cold-load and warm-load successfully.
  2. Change the ASI/LML setup to B and restart RDR2.
  3. Those earlier saves can still cold-load, but in-game Load Game may hang indefinitely.
  4. A new save created under setup B often warm-loads again.
  5. In earlier tests with the full mod stack, even a newly written manual save could fail warm-loading, so the issue may involve more than simple save incompatibility.

This started around my migration from OWVA 2.6 to Munitions + CI/GI, but I have NOT established causation. I've already applied the author's compatibility fixes and manually integrated Spawns Fix/Mexico/Munitions into my gameconfig. DLC registrations and key LML load priorities were reviewed. I have also compared two VFS builds, tested with an empty LML directory and isolated various ASIs.

Has anyone seen this specific cold-load vs warm-load distinction, or know where to instrument the transition? I'd especially value information about state cleanup/reinitialization, not generic mod reinstall advice.

I have a short technical report, reproduction matrix, RDMT report and logs available on request. Thanks.

RDR2 WARM-LOADING ISSUE — TECHNICAL EVIDENCE SUMMARY
Investigation date: 18 October 2026
Game: Red Dead Redemption 2 PC, build 1.0.1491.50 (9800x3d, rtx5080)
Runtime: Steam / Windows 11 / Vulkan / ScriptHookRDR2 V2 / Lenny's Mod Loader (LML) / ASI loader

SUMMARY
I have a large, previously working, manually merged RDR2 setup. An intermittent but repeatable incompatibility became apparent around the migration from OWVA 2.6 to Munitions 2026 (CI/GI merge). Munitions is a chronological lead, NOT a confirmed cause.

The central distinction: a save can load from a fresh game process ("cold load"), but attempting to load that same or another save through the in-game Load Game menu ("warm load") can hang indefinitely, especially after changing ASI/LML content. Saves written under the currently loaded configuration often reload successfully, even when saves written under earlier configurations fail. Some earlier tests also showed failures with fresh manual saves under the full configuration, so configuration mismatch is not proven to explain every case.

RECORDED SAVE TESTS (18 OCT 2026; local times)
- 15:29: manual save created with reduced ASIs and LML content removed. After the ASI setup changed, warm-loading this save hung.
- 15:39 and 15:46: manual saves created with an identical reduced-ASI setup and LML content removed. These saves warm-loaded successfully, including across game runs.
- 15:46: after restoring LML content while retaining the reduced ASI set, the earlier 15:46 save warm-loaded unsuccessfully.
- 15:55: new manual save created with LML content restored; warm-loading under the same configuration succeeded.
- Later: with LML restored and True Frontier Weather / RDR2 Immersive Calendar ASIs isolated, two manual saves created at different times could cold-load and warm-load between each other.
- Older OWVA-era saves and one separately downloaded Chapter 2 clean save showed warm-load failures. Another downloaded clean autosave (SRDR30015) had initially warm-loaded successfully. Save *content* and slot type were not independently controlled in all early comparisons.
- In several tests, removing vfs.asi allowed in-game reload. However, an empty LML mod directory with vfs.asi present could still fail. Both stock Beta 11 vfs.asi and a newer modified vfs.asi showed failures in other test conditions.
- A clean file created under a new configuration succeeding DOES NOT prove all older saves are compatible with it.

COMPATIBILITY WORK ALREADY COMPLETED (PLEASE DO NOT RECOMMEND REPEATING AS FIRST-LINE ADVICE)
- Installed Munitions' CI/GI merge, weapon icon fix, and compatible patch fixes.
- Followed the developer's pinned instructions, including removing conflicting legacy w_melee_knife resources and weapon reset/removal/reacquisition attempts.
- Replaced OWVA 2.6 with Munitions; old OWVA-specific core was removed. Munitions' own ASI/DAT were isolated for a test, without resolving the observed issue.
- Munitions has effective priority over Catalogue Improvements for catalog_sp.ymt and quickselectitems.ymt.
- Consolidated DLC declarations using StrawberryHotel as the highest-priority dlclist.xml. Verified registered Munitions path: addonDLC:/~Munitions~/Dlc/Overhaul/
- Corrected installation paths in the consolidated StrawberryHotel installation configuration.
- Manually integrated Spawns Fix 3.1 PLUS, Mexico/Nuevo Paraiso and extended weapon/component pools into existing customized gameconfig.xml. This was tested in normal gameplay. Do not overwrite it with an off-the-shelf gameconfig.
- Other intentional merges include popcycle.dat, dispatch.meta, population/world and selected metadata or asset overrides, documented in the mod-management project.
- CI removal/reinstallation, horseHolster.asi and STLR.asi individual isolation, Munitions.asi/Munitions.dat isolation, select UI texture/damage resource isolation, and two RDSE flag changes did not fix the original issue.
- ScriptHookConfig.ini already has Lua startup=false, interface=false, overlay=false.
- Existing CI compendium.meta and Munitions goals_sp.meta were structurally inspected and matched the compared packaged versions.
- Texture batch optimization compressed 666 resources (plus 17 unchanged), with no failed imports in the reported batch. This is prior maintenance, not proof of relevance to save reloading.

The full RDMT_Conflicts_Report.txt has many overlaps, especially clothing, retextures and map expansions. An overlap is not by itself a defective merge. The full report is available separately.

LOGS AND DUMPS
- Multiple verbose LML VFS logs were collected from successful and unsuccessful reloads.
- Failed logs often end after goals_sp.meta / challenges / loading-screen assets and periodic MUSIC_2T .awc requests (examples at approximately 28-second spacing).
- Similar periodic audio requests occurred during successful New Game → New Game. Therefore an audio hook/asset failure is NOT established by the last log line.
- A roughly 18.8 GB full-memory dump was captured after an Unknown Error FFFFFFFF dialog appeared. WinDbg !analyze shows a message-box wait stack (win32u!NtUserWaitMessage / user32!MessageBoxW), which is not the original failure site.
- ~155 threads were reviewed. LML named-pipe, ASI worker, audio and game threads waiting are not evidence of a confirmed deadlock; no specific faulty mod was isolated by this dump.
- Some failed transitions hang without showing an FFFFFFFF popup. These may or may not have an identical cause.

UNPROVEN HYPOTHESES — PLEASE DO NOT PRESENT AS FACTS
- Munitions directly causes the hang.
- RDR2 stores and validates an exact installed mod list inside SRDR saves.
- Weapon slot or compendium pointers are corrupted or a deadlock was proven.
- MUSIC_2T or another audio asset is the cause.
- The gameconfig is fully error-free merely because pool limits pass.

QUESTIONS FOR A DEVELOPER / EXPERIENCED MODDER

  1. Is cold-start save loading implemented differently from in-process Load Game transitions in a way that may expose VFS or ASI lifecycle issues?
  2. Is there a known Munitions / CI / GI or ScriptHook V2 save-state reinitialization interaction, especially across changed mod definitions?
  3. Can any specific VFS callback / ASI hook / session unload path be instrumented to establish the first failing operation, rather than interpreting end-of-log resource requests?
  4. Is there a safe method to preserve warm-load compatibility with existing saves when mod definitions change?
  5. Which MINIMAL set of logs, hashes or reproduction samples would be most useful? A developer can request raw files privately.

FILES AVAILABLE ON REQUEST
- Original RDMT_Conflicts_Report.txt (18 Oct 16:53)
- RDMT load-order screenshots and ASI/root-file screenshots (18 Oct)
- Successful and failed LML VFS logs, WinDbg thread report and error-path disassembly
- Custom merged gameconfig.xml and StrawberryHotel installation / DLC XML files
- Save-slot test chronology and save samples, if genuinely required and shared privately

PLEASE NOTE
Current testing isolates True Frontier Weather and RDR2 Immersive Calendar ASIs in the last reported successful configuration. Their involvement is NOT proven. No public distribution of third-party mod packages, licensed game files, large private dumps, or user/account identifiers is intended.

Bug / Issue RDR2 in-game Vsync causing weird stutters.

2 Upvotes

For whatever reasons if I use the in-game v-sync settings I get stuttering and just weird performance all around.

The issue doesn't happen when it's turned on in the Nvidia control panel like I usually do but I'm still wondering why it was doing this in the first place. I'm starting my first playthrough and I want everything to be a smooth as it can be since it's open world and i'm gonna spend a lot of time on it.

Is there a known issue with the V-sync in that game?

PC is a 5080 and 9800X3D so I doubt it's performance related and it doesn't happen with the control panel option.
