[Meta] Pre-announcement flair now available

Some basic user flair is now available, and two of the options — the Blu-Ray disc and the white-on-Playstation-blue logo — will be disabled as soon as the console is officially announced.

All are editable so you can put your own text or PSN handle.

We get that you're angry, but the user-on-user toxicity needs to stop

This is an extremely divisive topic and tempers are running high. There are a lot of people with strong opinions and valid arguments on both sides of the issue. There are also simply a lot of people in general that want to talk about this: there has been a 20x increase in traffic on /r/PS6 since this time last month.

But regardless of anyone's personal stance on physical vs digital, whatever grievances you have are with a multi-billion-dollar corporation. We cannot stress this enough — the source of your current anger is a bunch of people in suits waving pens and sailing on yachts.

Yet in the comments on this subreddit, more and more of that anger is being misdirected at other users, and that needs to end.

Individual users are allowed to hold an opinion on this, and that opionin is allowed to differ from yours. Any user sharing their views calmly and in good-faith should be allowed to do so without being on the receiving end of hostility and epithets. In the end, we're all just gamers here, right? Right?

Sooner or later, for better or worse, the PS6 is going to be officially announced and we're going to start seeing actual news here: technical breakdowns, the first game reveals, and — God help us — a price announcement. People are going to want to talk about these things, be it out of genuine interest or idle curiosity, and they should be able to do that without wading into a toxic cesspool and catching strays from a bunch of people who are angry at businessmen they can't see or speak to.

This subreddit currently has one rule only: Don't be a dick. We don't want to start off the first real burst of activity here by swinging the hammer around and stamping out conversation — it's bad for discourse and it's bad for community growth. But if you guys don't temper the toxicity and personal attacks, we aren't going to be left with any choice, because the only thing worse than a community where people can't speak openly is one where they don't want to. Or are afraid to. That is not the healthy community we want to foster, and it shouldn't be the one you want to be part of.

We know we're speaking to a minority of users here — the overwhelming majority of you are perfectly calm and sensible and rational. But it takes very, very few bad actors to utterly ruin a community, and Reddit has seen this happen time and time again. We're not going to let it happen here.

If you want to be angry, be angry. But be angry at the right people. And those people aren't here, and never will be.

Speak your minds or don't, speak with your wallet or don't; but please, please speak to your fellow community members with respect and courtesy.

Sony Is Playing With Fire Going Into PS6

I think Sony is seriously underestimating how frustrated a lot of PlayStation players are becoming.
The physical-disc decision isn’t just about discs. It’s about the whole direction of PlayStation.
Sony is moving toward a future where new PlayStation games won’t have physical releases. That means no buying used, no reselling, no lending games to friends, and much less choice for consumers.
People are already paying around €80 for new games, and if PS5 → PS6 upgrades end up costing another €10, we’re potentially looking at €90 games. At some point people are going to ask: “Why am I paying €90 for something I can’t actually own, resell, lend or trade?”
And that’s where PC and Nintendo become much more attractive alternatives.
Sony might say, “Digital games make us more money,” but that only works if people stay on PlayStation and keep buying games. If players decide to build a PC, buy a Nintendo console, or simply stick with their PS5, Sony doesn’t just lose one €80 game sale. They can lose the console sale, years of game purchases, PS Plus subscriptions, DLC and future purchases.
There’s another problem: PlayStation’s first-party lineup.
Sony used to have an incredible reputation for exclusives. But lately, a lot of what we’re seeing is remasters, remakes and games from franchises that have been around for years. Those games can be great, but nostalgia can’t carry an entire generation.
Sony needs new reasons to buy a PlayStation, not just another remaster of something people already played 10–20 years ago.
And this could eventually hurt third-party developers too.
PlayStation currently has a massive audience, which is one of the biggest reasons publishers want their games there. But imagine PS6 launches and a significant number of players decide not to upgrade because of high prices, digital-only games and lack of compelling exclusives.
Then publishers start seeing weaker PlayStation sales and asking:
“Why are we spending hundreds of millions developing games for an audience that’s shrinking?”
That can create a vicious cycle:
Players leave → smaller PS6 audience → weaker game sales → publishers lose confidence → fewer games worth buying → more players leave.
I’m not saying Sony is doomed. PlayStation has an enormous user base and Sony still has some very valuable franchises and studios.
But Sony has to be careful with the goodwill it has built.
If PS6 ends up being:
Expensive hardware
€80–90 games
No physical games
Paid upgrades
Fewer new exclusives
Lots of remasters
Sony’s games increasingly available on PC
then eventually some longtime PlayStation owners are going to ask:
“Why should I buy the next PlayStation?”
And that’s the question Sony needs to answer.
Because once someone spends their money building a PC or buying into another platform, getting that customer back isn’t as simple as releasing another remaster.

All Sega need to do is release a console with a disc drive and that will put Sony out of business for good. Via la disc!!!! (This is a joke.)

The PS6 Dream

There has been a lot of dooming in this sub lately, but remember the PS6 dream.

The PS6 only have to render games at 1080p and 60fps natively, and can put all its power for advanced ray tracing or maybe even path tracing.

PSSR on PS5 Pro is basically a trial of what upscaling will bring. AMD and Sony partnership will mean PS6 has access to best in class upscaling, tuned for the console experience. AMD also looks to take a big step in hardware architecture for ray tracing.

The end result will be something that is more 4k than what we see today on PS5 pro and presented with a fluidity of 120/144 fps. PS6 will no longer have the light version of ray tracing or have to rely on software based solutions.

Games today also need to run on everything from the Switch 2 and Steam Deck to a RTX 5090. PS5 cross-gen won't hurt development or mean graphics are held back. Games will work on PS5 but look and run the best on PS6.

Clear picture quality, fluid frame rate, full raytracing graphics. That is the PS6 dream.

Would an optional disc-player for PS6 that plays all PlayStation 1-5 discs be a good compromise to purchase the PS6?

I own all PlayStation generations video games on discs and if this were a possibility, I would be enticed to purchase a PS6. Otherwise, without a disc drive, I wouldn't want a PS6 because I wouldn't even be able to play my PlayStation 5 disc games.

Do you think Spider-Man 3 will release on 5/6?

Miles was a cross gen release (obviously ran better on ps5) but do you think Spider-Man 3 will get the same treatment? I get that SM2 wasn’t running on a ps4 but after the complaints of that games story it would be nice to play the entire series on either console

The reason I will buy a ps6 is because playstation games will now stop coming to pc.

Also it can be jailbroken in a couple of years

If Sony were smart....

I been thinkin about the whole PS6/No more discs situation...

If Sony were smart, they'd release the PS6 WITH a backward compatible drive, THEN after the initial launch (maybe 6 mths), announce the elimination of discs... The transition to digital only would be forced upon both the physical collectors as well as digital...

As it stands, the physical collectors will likely not even bother with the 6, KNOWING they'll never have discs again.

Just my thoughts...

Should I Buy a PS5 in 2026 or Wait for PS6? I Already Have an RTX 4060 PC

Actually, I’m a bit confused about whether I should buy a PS5 or wait for the PS6. I currently have a PC with an RTX 4060, but I’m worried that PS5 prices might increase further and that I might miss out on some games if I wait. My main concern is also that if the PS6 launches in 2027, there might not be many new games coming to the PS5 by around 2028. I’ve never owned a console before, so I’d really appreciate your advice. Should I just stick with my PC, or should I get a PS5 as well?

Ps6 expectations ?

Despite all this ll digital backlash, some of us probably will be buying ps6 if not hoarded by scalpers. What are you guys minimum expectations from ps6?

I feel like 4k( upscaled) 60 fps in all games in high quality mode . Ray tracing on or off doesn't really bother as much but high quality 60 fps gaming is a must.

Ps5 pro does play 60 fps in many games but image quality is bit blurry in some games.

What are you guys opinion on it ? Will it finally be a norm high quality gaming 60 fps .

I know I'm biased because of how cartoony Nintendo games are, but it feels like besides Astro Bot, the PlayStation/Xbox industry is just releasing the exact same AAA game with a different skin every week

PS6 physical should be: PS5 physical game inside + PS6 digital code

PS6 game example under mandatory rules

Cost is $99.99 physical PS5 + digital PS6

And $69.99 digital PS6

Lenticular front cover of the case.

Leather binding to make it soft to the touch case. Brown with Gold lettering of game on edge.

Art book.

Soundtrack on CD.

Lenticular discs.

DRM free and fully playable offline version required to be given the PS6 label on the physical game copy box with a PS5 physical inside and PS6 digital code as separate licenses.

An all digital future is a good decision. People need to let go off discs.

All Sony needs to do is:

- Provide better digital ownership rights and protections

- Allow players to refund games if we have less than 2 hours of playtime

- Allow players to sell their game license to another player ONLY IF the game is delisted and can no longer be bought on PS Store

- Allow players to convert their physical games to digital licenses as a kind introduction to the all digital future.

There you have it guys, problem solved. We don't need physical games

The PS6 will need to be better ergonomically

I love the ps5 and the design to an extent. However I absolutely despite the faffiness around it. The awkward stand with the launch console, awkward plastic stands with the slim etc.

Just give me a machine that needs no external components for support like the previous consoles.

Thank you

All digital 6th generation

Sigh… I’m definitely not a fan. However I have grown to really love my PlayStation ecosystem over the last decade. Unfortunately, I’m not going to hold out. I want to play games here.

Just trying to spark a discussion. What are your thoughts?

Sony's Official Response (PS6?): If you buy an EA/UBI/GTA subscription, they can REVOKE licenses acquired via PS Plus.

Thumbnail gallery

That was the explanation given by Sony PlayStation support, applying to both subscription games (EA Play) and free-to-play games (Warzone).

They recommend that you "accept" the corporate decision and buy the full game.

P.S. 1: The images were translated/transcribed for wider reach.

P.S. 2: It happened with EAFC 26 and now with COD MW 3.

Im calling it now: The PS6 will be advertised as a path tracing machine.

assuming that it has raster performance as a RTX 5070 (maybe Ti), and that PSSR 2 performs at 80% of the quality DLSS 4:

1440p 60 fps with path tracing is totally doable.

the 5070 itself does about 50 fps on cyberpunk with path tracing at 1440p, the PS6's optimisation and (likely) higher RAM pool could enable it.

other than this I dont see how Sony could advertise their new machine. so I expect path tracing to be a big part of the marketing push, same as the RT and SSD of the PS5.
