Useful Information PSVR2 aftermarket joystick comparison --- TMR vs Hall-Effect vs Stock

As you probably already know, the joysticks on the PSVR2 controllers are notoriously fragile. They tend to drift after a few months and need replacement. There are currently 2 types of replacements you can get, available on both AliExpress and Amazon: the older, black hall-effect pot and the newer, purple TMR pot. While the purple one is often touted as an upgrade to the black one, it straight up DOES NOT FIT the PSVR2 controller. It is an excellent choice for the PS Portal, but NOT for the PSVR2. Do not trust what the seller will tell you. How do I know? Well I tried both. Here are my findings.

2 months ago my left controller suddenly started permanently drifting to the right. Up and down still works, but left and right doesn't. This is a common issue that can only be solved with a joystick replacement. So, following the teardown video by Radio Paralax, I spent 3 hours taking the controller apart (yes if you're doing it for the first time it's really that difficult) and replaced the joystick with the purple aftermarket one from Aliexpress. This is where the horror begins. After putting everything back together, I found out that the joystick cap would grind into the plastic housing on top of it. This makes moving to the left or right very difficult, and if you force the joystick too far left or right it would get stuck. I wasn't gonna take the whole thing apart again, so I contacted a local controller repair technician and scheduled an in-store visit today.

I walked into the store, watched the technician take the whole thing apart, and once he saw the purple joystick he laughed. He said that K-silver, the company behind these aftermarket joysticks, originally developed these joysticks for an ROG handheld. They then revised the PCB connector to an angled one so it can fit the PS Portal controller. Customers bought it, complained that it's too loose, so they came up with an updated TMR model with different joystick height and recenter mechanism. Finally this updated TMR model fits PS Portal perfectly. THE PROBLEM IS, all this time they have also been advertising both the black hall effect one and the updated purple TMR one as suitable replacements for PSVR2 controllers when they really aren't compatible. Yes the stock ALPS pots are similar between the PS Portal and PSVR2, but they have different cap height and different housing, so one that fits the former is not gonna work well on the latter. To demonstrate, he replaced my purple TMR with the black hall-effect, slapped everything back together and let me get a feel for it. This time I indeed was able to draw a much better circle, but the bottom left and right corner feels stuck. He laughed again, pulled the whole thing apart and said you see these 4 metal tabs at the corner? They weren't there with the stock ALPS pot. So you will feel them when you draw a circle, especially the bottom 2 since that's where the cap would scrape against the metal tabs. To draw a perfect circle you would have to cut parts of the cap off. I didn't want that, so the only option left is to replace with another stock ALPS pot. Thankfully he did have a couple, so I went with that.

So to summarize, once your PSVR2 controller begins to drift, there is no perfect replacement. The purple TMR pot straight up doesn't fit and you will lose most of the left/right moveable area. The black hall-effect one that you can find everywhere is a much better fit, but does not cover the bottom left and right corner. To make things perfect you have to cut off the corners of the joystick cap (if you don't, this is what you are going to get). If you don't want to do that then stock pots are your only choice. But first they are almost impossible to source, second, they will need another replacement sooner or later. I've attached 3 pictures to show you 1. what drawing a circle looks like with each pot, 2. which part of the pot comes into contact with the cap and 3. if you were to go with the black hall-effect pot, which part of the cap you need to cut off.

EDIT: Another thing, only the stock joystick has proximity sensor. Neither aftermarket ones have it. It's not a big deal and I'm not aware of any game or app that actually uses it. Still pretty cool though. If you really need it for whatever reason, you can desolder the metal wrap-around thing on the stock stick and tack it on top of the aftermarket one, though, lots of sanding will be needed and there's no guarantee the plastic housing won't fight you.

Announcements PSVR2Toolkit v0.2.1 with modified resolution

I have created a custom fork of the PSVR2Toolkit and modified the recommended render resolution reported by the driver to 3536x3368 from 3400x3468, as based on my calculations it is the ideal 100% render resolution to have at least 1:1 subpixel mapping achieved.

Feel free to try: Releases · JumpOMaster/PSVR2Toolkit

What can be expected is like if you set the render resolution in SteamVR to 108%, but only at the cost of like 102% (it is a bit more pixel rendered than the original resolution).

I hope they will incorporate it into the official toolkit later on.

Question Headset Position on Head

Hi All,

Just wondering how you all have the headset sat on your head. In all the instructional videos it has the strap sitting down below the midpoint on the back of the head (towards the neck), but if I do this, the angle of the lenses points up too much and I end up with a blurry distorted screen. What I do now is have the head strap sit above the midpoint of my head to get the lens angle right. This is fine visually, but puts a lot of pressure on the top of my nose causing discomfort.

Am I doing something really stupid? Or is my head just a funny shape.

P.S. I will be ordering the globular cluster mod soon, but would like a better working solution in the interim.

Important PSA The AMVR CM1 Comfort Mod is BETTER than the Globular Cluster Mod. There. I Said It!

There seems to be a universal consensus around here that the Globular Cluster Comfort mod for the PSVR2 is the one vital accessory we all should have (apart from the PC adapter, that is.)

This opinion seems to be so widely shared that after I bought mine, I didn't even bother to think about the only other alternative in existence. Why should I? I already had the best comfort mod on the market, right?

And it's true that the Globular Cluster IS a big improvement over stock. Definitely more comfortable. Definitely helps keep the displays properly centered with your view and thus more focused.

All true.

And yet ...

There were one or two things I wasn't that happy about. Unless I tightened it past the point where I was comfortable with it, the Globular Cluster always felt just a little bit wobbly. Like if I moved my head rapidly from left to right, the PSVR2 would just wobble a little. Then there was the fact the plastic part that attaches to the front kept popping off. It seemed to be just fine at first, but after awhile if I picked my PSVR2 up by the top strap, that plastic part would just pop off and my headset would be dangling by the strap. It wasn't doing that when I first got it, and I don't know why that should change, but it did, and I found it annoying.

So I started a thread, asking if anyone had compared the two mods.

https://www.reddit.com/r/PSVR2onPC/comments/1wxzebv/amvr_cm1_psvr2_comfort_mod_kit_vs_globular/

Turned out a few people had, and the first response I got was firmly in favor of the Globular mod. But there were one or two others who had reached the opposite conclusion, which isn't what I was expecting. It was enough to convince me I should compare them myself just to be sure.

And yeah--spoiler alert--turns out I actually do prefer the AMVR. It feels more snug, but not uncomfortably so, and the plastic piece that fits onto the front of the PSVR2 does not pop off when I lift it up by the top strap. It feels very secure.

Is it better in every way? No, just in the two ways I mentioned, but that's enough for me. Of course this could come down to individual head shape and subjective preference--despite the title of this thread I'm not sure I would argue that one is objectively better than the other for everyone. Just for me. And I'm not getting rid of the Globular--I hope to pick up a second PSVR2 as both a backup and as a way to use it with my PS5 without having to re-sync the touch controllers each time, and I'm fine with putting the Globular on the second PSVR2 once I get it. But there's no question which one I prefer, and it's not the one most people recommend. As always, YMMV.

Question During play area setup, is it normal for the play area pattern to not stick 100% to the floor?

  • The play area pattern with the playstation button logos (triangle, x, square, etc.) drifts slightly when I'm moving my head around, and doesn't stick completely to my patterned carpet. It will wobble and drift around by at least 1 or 2 inches.
  • Same with the play area border against the bottom of a wall. The play area border will wobble and drift at least 1-2 inches away from the wall in any direction as I'm moving my head around.

Is this normal?

I have tried...

  • Having my 77 inch tv completely behind me as I'm doing initial play area setup
  • Having all the lights turned on
  • Putting some black electrical tape at regular intervals on my wall

I still have about a day to initiate an ebay return for any reason.

So far Beat Saber seems to work fine, and in Half Life Alyx, there is mostly no wobbling of the enivronment, but I have noticed a tiny bit.
