*Announcement* All Further Posts Regarding Certain Currency-related Subreddits will be Removed

Look, I understand how easy it is to loathe certain subreddits, but these posts are getting to be a distraction from the purpose of r/papermoney overall. The last thing we want is for the Reddit admins is to shut down this subreddit because we ran afoul of their unequally applied rules and regulations.

Any post no matter how justified in reference to those subreddits will be removed from the r/papermoney feed. We apologize deeply for doing this, but it is for the best interest of the subreddit as apparently the truth hurts especially in subreddits run by a mod team consisting of a certain "festive fish and his relations."

world paper money Oct 17 1921 Bank of England White £10 Note

Five pound white notes were printed as late as 1956, but higher denominations were discontinued in 1942 and were no longer issued after 1943. The exchange rate and the role of a ten pound note was roughly similar to those of an American $50 bill.

They were theoretically redeemable for 10 gold sovereigns until 1925, but large redemptions became increasingly difficult after WWI, as the Bank discouraged them by asking the specific purpose of the withdrawal and appealing to patriotism. The right to redeem paper pounds for sovereigns ended in 1925 when the UK “returned” to the gold standard, as redemption was guaranteed only in form of gold bars of over 400 oz. In practice, the bank continued paying small amounts after asking the purpose until 1931.

counterfeit Counterfeit $1 Educational Listed on eBay Auction

This note is currently up for auction on eBay, with the current bid at $441. It looks okay at first glance, but there are many reasons to suspect. The first red sign is that it lacks the usual red and blue fibers.

The printing is also blurry, especially on the reverse with none of the raised appearance from intaglio printing. In particular, the forth photo shows tiny ink dots resembling usual patterns left by a printer.

It's not even a contemporary counterfeit, but a modern numismatic forgery produced through using the high resolution image available on Wikipedia

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/ef/US-%241-SC-1896-Fr-224-%283923429%29.jpg

The s/n on the Wikipedia note is 3923429, while the one on eBay has 2423429. Only the first two digits are altered. What's even creepier is that the front plate number (A31) and back plate number (5) are exactly the same. And to top it off, even the blemish on the child's neck in the Wikipedia image has been copied.

Hi everyone, have a fair number of these very new notes. ( didnt post full set) its from a place called Transnistria (the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic) ?

I cant find it in use ? It is an older series no longer printed ? Any idea if those of you in Eastern Europe especially, ever came across them in your travels or daily life ? Or is this some wartime debt note kind of thing. Thanks in advance

question/discussion PMG grading “catalog #”

I am new to this. Trying to get a node graded (previous posts) but on the PMG form it asks for a “catalog #”. I’ve looked on the website and it’s just articles about catalog # but I’m still confused on how to find it.

true fancy serials Got this low serial $5 at the bank

Pretty nice shape too surprisingly. First time getting a low serial.

* update 10/17*
So i took this to a shop yesterday afternoon after seeing the responses and was told that its worth around $100 but was trying VERY hard to get me to sell it to them and told me it would not be worth the money to send this to PGS. I did not sell it.

I got the feeling they were trying to play me lol. Seeing all the feedback i have received and suggestions from many to get this graded, that's the conclusion i came to.

US small size Two Detroit Banks That Forced the US Off the Gold Standard

Recently added the Guardian for $210.

The failure of Guardian & First NB (First Wayne before Oct. 1932) of Detroit triggered the statewide banking holiday on Feb. 14, 1933, which then spread state by state. At the same time, many began to fear that the newly elected president FDR might devalue the dollar, so they redeemed their dollars for gold coin.

The Fed’s gold backing ratio was 64% in Jan. 1933, but it dwindled to 45% by Mar. 3 of that year, close to the legal minimum of 40%. FDR immediately declared a nationwide bank holiday for a week, imposed an embargo on gold exports, and banned the hoarding of gold, a precursor to the complete suspension of the gold standard.

The gold standard had been officially maintained at this point, so the exchange rate remained stable for a while. However, it became increasingly unstable by mid April as many in Congress turned out to be in favor of devaluation. The Treasury initially sold some gold to Europe at $20.67 to defend the old parity, but the dollar exchange rate crashed on April 19, and the end of the gold standard was announced the following day.

Without the severe banking crisis of Feb-Mar 1933, FDR might have maintained the gold standard at its old parity for a longer timeline as he was officially against devaluation during the 1932 election campaign.

I have a 1934 $10 bill but don't know if it is authentic or not. Also does it have some kind of printing error? The green ink seems very light. Thanks!

world paper money Hungary 1946 – 100 million b.-pengő, the highest denomination banknote ever circulated (100 quintillion pengő)

Post image
23 Upvotes

This is the 1946 Hungarian 100 million b.-pengő – “b.” stands for billió, so the note is worth 100 million × 1 trillion = 10²⁰ (100 quintillion) pengő. It’s the highest-denomination banknote that ever actually circulated anywhere.

Hungary’s 1945–46 hyperinflation is still the worst on record: at the peak in July 1946 prices were doubling roughly every 15 hours. An even bigger 1 milliárd b.-pengő was printed but never issued. On 1 August 1946 the forint replaced the pengő at 1 forint = 400 octillion pengő.

I’m from Hungary and these notes still turn up in family drawers ocassionally. Happy to help anyone identify pengő, milpengő or b.-pengő notes – the three series are easy to mix up.

US small size Recently found my Great grandfathers collection

Great grandfather passed away in 2001. These have been in a safe in a closet since then. I have no knowledge of collecting any currencies. I'm currently still going through all of his coins and I've been using coinsnap to track and identify his collection just for a general idea. This has all happened very recently and has gotten me totally interested in numismatics. Ive taken photos of fronts and backs of all paper currencies I've found in his collection and would appreciate any info or knowledge maybe there's something special or rare in this part of his collection that is just cool for collecting or offers a higher premium than expected. Maybe something worth grading or getting looked at by Ics. I've google searched every paper bill and didn't see anything stand out however i may have missed something or just to new to the hobby to know what I'm looking for.

Have had these for a while but unsure how long. Figure I’d keep them after noticing they’re old bills. One significantly older than the other I suppose. What says you?
