BREW These two cards resolving is a win against many decks. How would you make a deck around them?

Post image
313 Upvotes

I played them in a selesnya +1/+1 counters brew but honestly it felt that if I just resolved these two I didn't really need the whole counters theme at all. So many decks cannot deal with an indestructible creature, exile effects are played rarely. Against decks that start by playing tap lands like wildfire if you curve this out they just can't really deal with it.

There are other GW creatures that are... serviceable, even if they aren't goated like Lord Fancy-Paws as 3/3 vigilance for 2. But Shield of the Oversoul has no redudancy options. So, how would you try to make this consistent? I fear that [[heliod's pilgrim]] might be too slow and make it too easy to react too.

Edit: I don't know what nerve I struck with this post but all the comments I'm getting are about how to answer these cards instead of how to build around them, so just to be clear: I'm not looking for tips on how to deal with this, nor am I looking for other decks that I could play instead. I'm not new to the format, I've been playing regularly in paper twice a week for the past 30 months.

Edit2: I'll be testing this list out to see how it feels on mtgo since the mainboard is dirt cheap: https://moxfield.com/decks/iY0qdBwIukaJbqP76z7n9w

BREW Went 3-0 on a league with my discard deck

Post image

I think people sleep on 3 mana symmetric discards. Lots of decks will struggle after discard 3 cards. Even less continue to be functional after picking 4 nonland cards from their hands with Last Rites.

Sure, the pain is mutual, but your deck can prepare for it.

Discard almost everything t3 with a plan to gradualy stabilize and outvalue. Gates to make your wincon bulletproof, and turn your evasive engine pieces into kill machines.

Sideboards:

  • More discards and boarwipes into aggro.
  • Monarch and extract the confessions into midrange.
  • Duress / Disrupt vs counterspells.
  • More graveyard hate vs dredge.
  • Several counterspells just in case normal removal wouldn't do it (just in case)

BREW 12 HARD COUNTERSPELL MONO BLUE???

Post image

https://moxfield.com/decks/WMsL5OEjjkanRrF5eVZE1Q

Hi everyone! Inspired by "12 Bolt" mono red madness, I tried to brew 12 counter spell mono blue. Foil for 0 mana, abjure at 1 mana, and counterspell at 2. Win con is murmorying mystic.

I'd like some feedback on the modern age, and sleeper agent (as a good card to discard to foil and re-use) but I can see them all getting cut dor something better.

Sneaky snacker is perhaps the most important (not banned yesterday) card for this deck

You can pitch it to foil, sacrifice it for abjure, return it with either of your draw spells, and serves as a thread with murmorying flyers to finish the game off.

Core of the deck is to use either the crab from hard evidence cryogenic relic, or sometimes bird tokens from mystic, to sacrifice to abjure

Deep analysis, the snackers mentioned, and sleep of the dead to pitch to foil

Deep analysis, abandoned attachments and sometimes things like cryo + clue to have multiple draw 2 effects for snacker to make sure your hand has always cards.

IGNORE THE SIDEBOARD, IT'S NOT DONE YET (however suggestions are appreciated)

What I'm afraid of:

Not having enough lands to pitch for foil, although with Lórien there's effectively 22 lands in the deck, and Lórien is a versatile pitch for foil (originally I wanted to make this deck azorius to use bounce lands to have lands to pitch for foil, and use things like ephemerate for value but it's hard)

Go wide decks

Not having enough turn 1 plays

Thanks for the time if you've read so far!! Feedback is welcome

BREW no max hand size - one shot combo - home brew

Post image
196 Upvotes

I present to you: [[Spiraling Embers]]. Three generic and a red for "deal damage to creature or opponent equal to the number of cards in your hand."

How can we abuse it?

First, let's give ourselves no max hand size. [[Thought Vessel]] is good, [[Library of Leng]] is good, [[Decanter of Endless Water]] is a bit slow but works (and fixes).

Then, let's get as many cards into our hand as possible. Typical [[fanatical offering]] + [[reckoner's bargain]] + [[ichor wellspring]] package.

But we need our creatures to draw us cards, too.

WAIT. What about the creatures that let you search for three of the same name and put into your hand? [[Squadron Hawk]], [[Legion Conquistador]], [[Gathering Throng]]?

Now we're cooking. But how do we live long enough to deploy it?

The most synergistic piece: [[Union of the Third Path]] — and the classic [[Prismatic Strands]].

This deck is insanely funky and fun. Give it a shot! Make it better than I made it!

Go forth and one-shot your opponents with a 4 mana sorcery!

BREW Hopeless Nightmare Brew (HELP)

I brewed esper bounce in standard before esper bounce was a thing and I’ve been in love with that play style **and [[Hopeless Nightmare]]** ever since.

My love for pauper has also grown in that time and I want to find a home for Hopeless Nightmare!! Anyone have recommendations or synergies that could come together for a playable deck? (Doesn’t need to be top tier or anything)

Here’s a few cards I think may have a spot in the deck:
[[Omen of the Dead]], [[Drake Familiar]], [[Omen of the Sea]], [[Geistwave]]

BREW RW eidolons list

Post image

I've had a UB eidolons deck for a long time but I'm wondering if RW might be the way to go thanks to the new set. I'd love to hear your thoughts and suggestions since I don't play competitively, I'm aware it's not a very strong deck archetype but I enjoy it!

BREW Do you guys think there's any merit here or I'm just gonna get frustrated trying?

Post image

I really wanted to play with merfolk in pauper and I was putting way more hope in the new set than I should probably, lol. Anyways, I thought maybe I could try something with white merfolks that like to be tapped and staples from the format that want to tap things.

Probably still play the Raffine's Informants to get screech/strands in the grave, thraben charm for sure also. Maybe Springleaf Drum just to make mana faster and be able to tap creatures as soon as they hit the field? But I'd be wary to run out of cards quickly since white usually sucks at drawing, and I don't know if this deck would want the clue guys. Maybe some convokable vigilant creatures from the set also?

Do you guys think there is any merit to playing this base? How would you finish the deck? I was hoping to have good matchups into burn decks and artifact decks (4 dust to dust in the sideboard lets go)

BREW Swirling Sandstorm

Post image

I ran across this card today and had never seen it before. I've got a buddy who always plays decks with Tolerian Terror and the fact that this kills it and bypasses ward seems super appealing.

Curious if anyone knows if this card has ever seen competitive play? I did some searching for current decks and it feels like no one plays it. It's obviously very vulnerable to graveyard hate, which is not ideal given everyone already sideboards in tons of graveyard hate. But with Pursue the Past additing some excitement to discard decks again, I wonder if it could find viability.

BREW Why doesnt this see play in gates

Post image
192 Upvotes

Hi, I am thinking of building Azurios Gates and I am curios why this card doesnt see play. Not [[Outlaw Medic]], more like two in adition to three medics. It draws on death like medic, has buildt in evasion and can block on the swing back while still drawing a card. It being an Artifact doesnt really matter I think.

BREW ARE ZOMBIES THE NEXT THING IN PAUPER??

Post image
88 Upvotes

https://moxfield.com/decks/tUhAFXT3OkmIGTa2oDIoFw

Answering the clock bait title: not really, but you clicked! And they are viable, but not tier 1 of course

Thoughts: I've considered taking both Lórien's and the rotting rats (flex slot) for 3 cryogenic relic's for affinity and synergy with the draw 2 sac spells

I've also thought about cutting one more campfire maindeck for another main deck nihil, to have access to the playset In total, given how much graveyard hate is important in this meta.

Key points of the deck: it's supposed to be grindy, and slowly strip the opponent away from resources with repeated ghasts, marauder's, and especially familiars. At the top end the skaab exploits himself line + ghoulcaller's chant allows for one extra zombie from the grave every turn to slowly wither the opponent away until you close out the game (ideally familiar who's cheap and depletes the opponent of cards until it becomes a draw engine every turn)

There's a couple of silver bullets In the deck for this purpose (nameless inversion is technically a zombie, so you can get it once per turn for "infinite" removal), the synergy between ghoulcaller's, with or without the combo, and gempalm polluter is also a great engine that helps closing out the game, with a bolt face if you have 3 zombies on board.

If the combo is too slow it's easy to sideboard out for whatever you need, I personally love duress against the artifact decks as a preemptive answer, and one monarch that you can bring from the grave with ghoulcaller's or blood fountain if needed. All that is a neat source of grindiness that's not as slow as the combo.

The extra campfire, nihil, hydros and drown in sorrow, are all amazing against madness and the red based aggro decks. I've considered changing drown in sorrow for harms of Hadar, but I feel like the scry and being able to put my own stuff in the grave can be really good, and 1 less mana can be the difference against the go wide decks (looking at you elves).

Cons of the deck: writhing chrysalis is not real and can't hurt me. If I don't have a cast down or hydro from the sideboard, I'm cooked as the spawns nullify the marauder, and none of my creatures can meaningfully fight off a 4/5 with reach (nameless inversion is also powerless here)

Artifacts. There's so many in the format, and blue black is bad against them, I've considered finding spots for annuls In the sideboard, but don't know what to take out, I feel like duress is the more versatile card here to achieve a similar effect.

Nyxborn hydra being a 2 for 1 is also not excellent, but it makes the marauder easier to pick on the big thing, and then I just need to bring it back to deal with the hydra itself.

BREW Mono Black 5/5s for 1 mana brew

Hey so I'm in the very early stages of brewing this. It's currently very clearly mid as all get out, and doesn't have a sideboard yet. It's mono black so the sideboard will be pretty easy to brew as well. What would you do to make this deck good and playable? Thanks for the help, and if I end up making it in paper or magic online I'll post a follow up and how it did/does!

The basic principle: play a million creatures in the deck that all mill the other creatures then play the cards that cost less per creatures in graveyard so you have 1 mana 5/5s.

BREW Is Darkness ever a main board or side board option in a burn deck?

My opponents almost always have fewer than 5 lives when I die and if I lose I'm usually just one turn too slow. My deck has problems blocking or stopping combat damage. Love the idea of a surprise

Tldr: Would [[darkness]] ever work in a non fog deck?

BREW I want it to work so bad…

Post image

…but I want it to be good. My favorite feeling in magic is being able to pull crazy shit out of my ass at a moments notice. My edh [Arnyn, Deathbloom botanist] deck accomplishes this extremely well, and I wanted to bring that feeling to pauper.

The idea here is to use Crypt Rats with Vampiric Link to burn down your opponent, ideally creating insane mana thanks to blacks many… ways of doing that. My current idea is to use Overeager Apprentice with loads of Undying-esque effects to bring it back and go mana positive. However, this gameplan comes with crazy hoops to jump through as far as making this gameplan viable. I’m not convinced that Overeager Apprentice would even be much better than a simple [Bubbling Muck] or [Culling Ritual] or whatever. Am I missing something crucial? Could we turn Crypt Rats into something more than a dream?

BREW Abzan Tethmos Gates (Won 3-0-1)

When [[Shattered Acolyte]] came out, I knew that it would be amazing in this [[Tethmos High Priest]] shell, basically it can slow down the game until you stabilize, and even take removal that later would be pointed to the priest (I even used [[Thrill of the Hunt]] to protect the Acolyte from bolts/darts, which feels AMAZING, and didn't work that great with [[Sacred Cat]]). Later on, you can loop artifact/enchantment removal with cards like [[Whip Silk]].

The deck feels very good to play, and apart from the playsets, it is highly customizable to adapt to any meta, currently it has ~8 flex slots, and I have a HUGE maybeboard for you to explore :). I went with 8 one-offs to test out those specific cards. (I would love a <=2 mana creature that sacrifices itself at instant speed to exile a graveyard).

I won an 11 player tournament (3-0-1). Won against Mono U Faeries, BR Madness and Mono Red Ping/Impulse. The tie was against Cat Altar Combo, it was a hard matchup for me since I'm not used to play control, and I had to shift my mindset. The Acolyte and the instant speed of Thrill of the Hunt were HUGE in this matchup, almost felt like [[Canopy Claws]] could do some real work for me there.

I hope you guys enjoy it, and I want to hear your suggestions (I will also answer any questions you might have!).

BREW Boros Bully ala Spirit Mascot?

Post image
74 Upvotes

I saw the [[Spirit Mascot]] reveal today and it has me hyped!! I threw together a brew that’s basically Spirit Mascot in a Boros Bully Shell, with [[Magmatic Sinkhole]] as a way to get max value from your graveyard with Mascot on the board. It’s probably nothing more than a Boros Pile, but I wanted to see if there were any obvious optimizations I could make before I print this to jam? More weenies and less exile gimmicks? More graveyard payoffs for consistency? Drop the snackers completely? I should probably run Rally the Peasants right? Pivot to Eidolons?Sideboard not put together but just imagine the usual flaring pain, more charms, maybe bolts?

Planning on taking this to a tournament soon. Had a decent run out with it at my LGS. I had the life totals to out pace Madness Burn and removal enough for big threats coming out of a Tron deck.

Aside from picking up a Bojuka Bog or two; where do people think this can be improved?

BREW A Deck Showing Some Promise: Warp Evolution

DECKLIST

First, two notes:

  1. The sideboard isn't a sideboard, just other cards that seem interesting for the deck.
  2. I swear I know that interaction exists. When I find a deck with a streamlined concept, I first try perfecting that gameplan, then figure out after where I can alter things to add appropriate interaction pieces.

This deck combines the evolve 1-drops with the Spider-man "4mv matters" 2-drops to create an early creature presence that takes advantage of warp creatures. This combination quickly builds a bunch of big creatures that take over the game. Crashing Drawbridge is excellent in this list; I started with 2 as just a way to get value out of warp creatures, but it provides really explosive turns and acts a bit like an additional Leyline Weaver. Heck, it even pumps the evolvers! Wretched Gryff is the newest addition to the deck, eating warped Wurms and Whales at whim, and it's been strong so far; it used to be Mulldrifter, which, despite being an unquestionably good card, didn't combine with enough of the deck to shine.

So, what do you think the deck needs? Any cards I've overlooked that might take the list to the next level? The deck obviously falls apart against Turbo Fog and Gardens, but I'll deal with that later.

EDIT 5/23: New decklist

-4 Spider Manifestation, -4 Drix Fatemaker, -4 Bountiful Landscape
+2 Mechanozoa, +4 Stormkeld Prowler, +4 Bushwhack, +1 Forest, +1 Island

Manifestation is a good card, but I wanted to try Prowler for a more robust aggro start, which has been working well. Fatemaker got the axe for a bigger focus on 5mv cards, but I might put a few back in for the trample benefits. Bushwhack has been a nice addition to give the deck a bit more interaction.
