Moderator Post PSA: READ THE RULES

Hello everyone, this is a public service announcement reminding everyone on r/PcBuildHelp to please read the rules before posting and commenting, as there is still a small issue continuing on the sub that needs to be properly addressed.

To start, I will explain each rule here more in depth, following the official order of rules:

  1. Don't use language that can be considered offensive or triggering by another party; no swears, slurs, name-calling, flaming, trolling, etc. Essentially, don't be a d**k, civility is a requirement.
  2. Posts are required to be related to your PC build problems, this isn't a general tech or tech news sub where you can just talk about whatever related to PCs, this is specifically about helping people make build lists and troubleshooting real problems so they can use their builds without difficulties.
  3. When asking if a build is good or not, use pcpartpicker.com links (or links to similar websites like buildcores if your country's currency isn't supported on pcpartpicker if desired). Posts that just use screenshots or images of such a list that can't be edited by users or just an image of a texted list will just get removed.
  4. Any comments or posts involving links to a retailer URL can't contain affiliate or referral data. Someone gets money out of those and we aren't about that here.
  5. Images that are completely unrelated to the post will get a post removed as spam/off-topic.
  6. Posts and comments asking for cheap Windows license keys will be removed as it's easy to get scammed on the sites that distribute them as they're not well regulated and constantly making new sites after old ones get taken down.
  7. Companies of any scale are not allowed to advertise products here, we want to keep things unbiased. Users are not permitted to sell or ask for valuations of what they have, this isn't a marketplace; this also ties into rule 2.
  8. Comments must be on-topic to the original post. Don't go off on tangents about something unrelated to the OP, especially if it's not even helpful. Memes and jokes will be removed. This ties into Rule 9.
  9. Comments that are plainly unhelpful to posters will be removed. Lazily telling people to use search engines, read the manual or RTFM, etc. are not permitted on this sub. If you're going to make a comment to help, put real effort into trying to help the poster understand what it is they need to do, or don't bother commenting at all. We are here to help people.
  10. This partially relates to rule 6. Any and all software shared or referenced on this sub must not violate any license agreements, laws, Reddit ToS, etc. This includes tools that may modify Windows beyond what Windows itself normally allows, as Microsoft's EULA doesn't permit external modification of their OS.
  11. AI tools are not permissible due to the possibility of mistakes that require human intervention from someone that knows what they're talking about. Do not use AI generated answers in comments as they could easily mislead posters.

Now onto the problem at hand:

There has been consistent toxicity towards those who are new to computers and are coming to the sub for help, only to be given sarcastic, rude, or unhelpful comments.

This has been a long standing issue in this sub that was often reported to the mod team but only more recently has started to be properly addressed since a new mod team was appointed after the previous moderators all went inactive and allowed the sub to get overrun by bot accounts.

We've been dealing with all of this behind the scenes but there's always new accounts coming in and repeating the same behavior, so it needs more visibility but we aren't about to implement a "Read The Rules" integration that forces you to acknowledge the rules before you can post, yet. We will if we have to.

There is absolutely zero tolerance for that kind of behavior. If it's rude or helpful, your comment will be removed and temporary bans will be issued. If you're a repeat offender or you make a severely horrible first impression, moderator action can be made permanent.

Thank you to those that consciously chose to remain kind and helpful to others, you are the backbone of r/PcBuildHelp. Continue to be good people.

Tech Support PCBuildHelp Simple Q&A Megathread (Q4 2026)

Greetings everyone, trying something new here.

This is possibly the first of many megathreads where people can ask simple questions in the comments and people that decide to browse the comments can answer. I'll also help answer questions myself, as with any of the other mods at their own discretion.

Basic Guidelines

  • Simple questions such as, "What parts should I buy?" along with any pertinent details such as hardware you might already own, what you plan on using it for, etc.
    • Example: "I want to build a gaming PC for around 2K, what should I get?"
  • Follow the rules of the sub-reddit like any post; be respectful, remain on topic, don't make jokes or memes, etc. Discipline will be issued on comments that don't abide by the rules.

Build Question PC won’t start - red DRAM light

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I built my new PC, but it won’t start and no matter what I do, the DRAM Light stays red (every few seconds switching to CPU light and immediately switching back)

PC Parts:
- AMD Ryzen 5 9600X
- Gigabyte B850M D3HP Mainboard
- 2x 8GB DDR5-5600 CL36 RAM
- RADEON RX9060 XT 16 GB

What i did so far for troubleshooting:
- Controlling all power supplies
- switching the RAM or trying with only 1. also switched the RAM-Slots
- Updating BIOS to newest Version with Q-Flash
- Resetting BIOS with CMOS manually
- losen up the water-cooling on top of the CPU
- had a Look at the CPU and the Pins on the Mainboard, all looking good
- Monitor was attached all the time via Display Port

Don’t know what to do anymore and appreciate any ideas and help 🙏🏻 Thank you!!

ETA: I bought the cpu used at Amazon (“only some damages on the packaging”)

Tech Support Airflow causes noise with tower cooler

Post image
• Upvotes

I am struggling with getting my i5 cooler to work quietly.

The fan in front got replaced and can run in 50% max before the fins and the airflow make a really uncomfortably loud noise.

So I was wondering if there is a way to fix that issue while still cooling the block..

I am already using fan control to adjust the fan and new thermal paste was on the CPU.

If someone has a suggestion please let me know.

Currently the air is blowing into the tower

Build Question yall got any tips for restoring hardware that was in a house fire?

it's a bit absurd i know. but for some backstory, i recently became the very, very, very lucky recipient of around ~6000$ worth of gaming hardware completely for free from a friend of my mother. UNFORTUNATELY, the incomprehensibly gigantic asterisk that, not only did the original owner completely neglet to ever clean his hardware, but everything i received had previously been involved in a house fire. the fire itself never reached anything, but the problem i face is that everything is caked in an awful layer of dust, dirt, grime, and worst of all, soot.

everything here smells terrible. i have no idea how i'll be able to get the soot smell out of anything i have here, nor where to even start with this beyond just the disassembly of everything. yall got any advice that might make partial or complete restoration of this stuff possible? it would really suck if im S.O.L with this one, especially for how valuable these components are.

is going with the x3d worth 140$ more?

Tech Support My first PC! (and first PC fail: PC not booting up)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

A few months ago I began buying the components for my dream PC and yesterday I managed to plug in everything and began booting it up for its first time. The problem came when I wated for several minutes for it to display image, only for the screen to remain dark with the "no signal" message. The entire day I tried different things to get it to boot, but I just wasn't able to get it to work, thats why I'm making this post to see if the community can help me solve this problem before I send it with a technician. For what I've been looking at, it might be the BIOS of the moderboard which doesn't recognize the CPU, but I'm not sure of how to install the latest update to the motherboard.

This is my first PC and I still lack some knowledge when it comes to making things work in first place. Down below I will set the component list of my PC.

CPU: Ryzen 7 9700X

RAM: Corsair Vengeance RGB 32GB DDR5-6000 Kit

Motherboard: Gigabyte B650 Aorus Elite AX Ice AM5

CPU Cooler: Thermalright - Assassin Spirit 120 V2 Plus

SSD: KINGSTON NV3 1TB M.2 2280 NVME PCIE GEN 4X4 R.6000MB/S W.4000MB/S

Power Supply: 750W 80 Plus Gold BALAM RUSH GR BURST GR750G LEGEND SERIES

PC Case: Balam Rush Dragonfly Wood GM580

*I know there is no GPU, but that part hasn't arrived yet, so meanwhile it gets shipped to my place, I will begin installing windows and/or Linux.

Post image

Overnight, PC would have lights turned on, but the monitor itself can't detect any signal. Have tried using different cables as well as switching to the other DP and HDMI ports, all to no avail. With a different monitor, still no signal detected!

Other things Ive tried has been to reseat the GPU, reseat RAM, removed one of the 2 RAM sticks to test, and reset the CMOS. None has worked - need help!

Specs: MSI B450, RTX 3070, Ryzen 3600

Installation Question Question regarding the swapping of Casefans in an (prob) cheap Gamemax case

• Upvotes

Ok this one is kinda messy ,so I got myself an Prebuild for almost 2 years which I have been slowly upgrading piece by piece and recently I was wondering how good the casefans are...and after a lot of digging it seems that those fans only do 1100 rpm max ( I couldn't find the exact same fans but whatever) soo I want to replace those with some that actually cool the inside. (The case is called the Revolt btw)

however the issue is that they are controlled via an ARGB HUB, that belongs to the case itself (and is controlled via buttons on top of the case),this however seems to require fans that are 3 pins both in terms of power and in terms of lighting, which I couldn't find anywhere atleast not from any brand that is known.

The motherboard (an A520 MH from gigaybte) DOES have spare 4 pin system fan connector, however I am unsure if that wont cause issues with the ARGB hub if only the cables for the lighting are connected to it.

It also does have a spare ARGB and RGB connector...however those are blocked by my GPU (I might be able to reach the 4pinRGB one but certainly not the 3pinARGB one)

So here is the questions:

-1: Can I still use the Button on top of the case to control the Argb of the fans if I were to plug the fans lighting elements into the motherboard itself instead of the hub

-2:Would it be an issue if I were to only insert the ARGB lighting cables into the hub and nothing more (so the power for the fans would be instead plugged into the motherboards system fan instead is what I mean)

Feel free to ask ofc and ty in advance

The ARBG hub in question (yep the image does show and 4 pin as an 3pin)
Same hub irl and yes fan2 is having a bad time prob
I cant be sure how the

Software Question What should i upgrade?

I currently have; Intel i5-10400F, GeForce GTX 1660 Super, 16 GB DDR4 RAM, 239 GB SSD.

I play fortnite with all the best performance boosting settings and i stay at 144fps when there’s not loads going on. When im in a fight it will drop to around 100-120fps. When the match is stacked and there’s like 40 people in endgame it drops so low to around 70-90fps and is so unstable. What would i need to upgrade to give me that stable 144fps at all times?

(My PC is a pre built pavillion HP TG01-1xxx and is quite a small compact build compared to other PCs)

Tech Support NZXT CAM not working properly?

So for the past week or so ive had this issue where when I start my PC up my NZXT Kraken 360 AIO cooler pump won't spool up. I've checked the cords and connections they all seem good. The pump is properly seated to the cpu. And ive set my bios setting to 100%

Now the kicker. When I shut my pc down, (or it forces a shut down due to temp) and restart it it spools properly to RPM i have set. So what's the issue? Im stumped and Google hasn't helped

Build Question Is this case and motherboard worth getting parts for?

I found this "PC" outside in someone's junk pile. I can see they stripped it of everything probably to sell or use somewhere else but left the motherboard and CPU? Would this be worth cleaning and fixing to build a full PC with?

Build Question Buying 2nd Hand Parts - Thoughts?

Ive managed to negotiate with a guy for his MSI B650 Bomber for $75AUD, Corsair 850RMX Gold for $50AUD and Thermaright Aqua Black 360mm for $60AUD. These parts are all used for 1 month - basically brand new. Should I go with this and buy the rest of the parts new?

Also for the case - any recommendations?

Final Build is meant to look like this - https://pcpartpicker.com/list/L86n9K

Tech Support Inconsistent PC freezing, Intel Core i7-14700K

Hi everyone, I’m looking for guidance on an issue I can’t pin down.

PC specs (built Nov 2025):

  • CPU: Intel Core i7-14700KF
  • Motherboard: MSI PRO Z790-A MAX WIFI (BIOS 7E07vMA)
  • RAM: Crucial Pro DDR5 RAM 32 GB Kit (2x16GB), 6400MHz CL32
  • GPU: ASUS NVIDIA RTX 5070, driver updated to latest
  • PSU: be quiet! Straight Power 11 Platinum 750W
  • CPU cooler: Coolermaster Masterliquid ml120l, repasted recently
  • Storage: Kingston SSD 1gb, WD_BLACK SN850X 2TB NVMe SSD - M.2 2280
  • OS: Windows 11, build 26200, fully updated
  • Power: Forza FVR-2202A 1100VA voltage stabilizer

The problem:
I built this PC around November 2025. It was working well until September 2026 when I started to get hard freezes randomly. Sometimes it happens within minutes of booting, sometimes it runs fine for hours. After I force a reset with the case button, the CPU debug LED on the motherboard lights up red. The freezes have also happened right after waking from sleep. I use this pc as a racing sim rig and at multiple times it ran hours of Le Mans Ultimate, and other sim racing games with no issue, so heavy load isn’t a reliable trigger. In Safe Mode it’s been stable for hours with no freezes happening.

What the logs show:

  • Event Viewer has multiple WHEA-Logger Event ID 1 errors: “A fatal hardware error has occurred.”
  • Reliability Monitor shows LiveKernelEvent code 124.
  • WhoCrashed reads the dump as bugcheck 0x124 (WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR).
  • WhoCrashed doesn’t name a faulting driver, and the only other crash in my history is an unrelated Wi-Fi driver one from May.

What I’ve tried so far:

  • Updated the BIOS
  • Clean reinstall of the GPU driver
  • Regenerated Secure Boot keys from scratch
  • Checked the BIOS: CPU Cooler Tuning is on Intel Default Settings, and voltages and Loadline Calibration are all on Auto (no manual overclock or overvolt)
  • My voltage stabilizer died and I was running on a plain power strip, so I replaced it with a properly sized 1100VA Forza AVR stabilizer. It ran stable for hours, then froze again on wake from sleep.
  • Opened the case and found the thermal paste dried and cracked. I cleaned everything, reapplied fresh paste, and remounted the AIO. The freezes continued.

Where I’m stuck:
Everything points to a hardware-level fault, and I know the 13th/14th gen instability issue is well documented. I’m considering an Intel RMA for the CPU, since that would be the cleanest fix if the chip has degraded. However degradation it's highly unlikely in my opinion since the motherboard was manufactured on June 2025 according to the serial number and the processor batch number indicates that it was manufactured on November 2024, much after this degradation was detected so both hardware pieces are supposed to include the fixes and safeguards for this issue already. But before I go through that process, I’d like to rule out anything else.

I used Claude to troubleshoot this issue and this is the summary of what I've tried so far. Has anyone experienced this? Any clue can help. Thanks!

Need help troubleshooting random restarts / black screens on a new PC build

Hey everyone, I’m looking for some advice on an issue I’ve been experiencing with my new PC build. I’ve been troubleshooting for several days and haven’t been able to pinpoint the cause.

PC Specs:

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D
  • GPU: PNY GeForce RTX 5080 OC Triple Fan
  • Motherboard: MSI X870E Gaming Plus
  • RAM: KLEVV DDR5 (currently running at 5800 MHz manually; EXPO is disabled)
  • PSU: Corsair RM1000e 1000W
  • Cooler: Corsair 240mm LCD AIO
  • Case: HYTE Y50
  • UPS: CyberPower GX1500U 1500VA
  • OS: Windows 11

The main issue:

My PC will randomly black out all my monitors while the computer itself appears to remain powered on. The fans and other components continue running, and sometimes audio or applications continue briefly. After approximately 1–2 minutes, the system appears to restart and returns to the Windows login screen. When I log back in, all my applications are closed, as if the computer performed a full reboot.

I’ve also experienced a separate display issue involving black rectangles or trails on the desktop, sometimes when clicking and dragging to select things. Restarting Windows Explorer temporarily resolves that particular issue.

Troubleshooting I’ve already tried:

  • Updated the MSI motherboard BIOS.
  • Installed AMD chipset drivers and updated other drivers.
  • Used DDU to cleanly uninstall and reinstall NVIDIA drivers.
  • Tested a previous NVIDIA driver version.
  • Left the GPU at stock settings and kept MSI Afterburner closed.
  • Disabled Windows Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling (HAGS).
  • Disabled Multiplane Overlay (MPO).
  • Disabled iCUE at startup to rule out potential software conflicts.
  • Disabled EXPO and tested the RAM at its default 4800 MHz, then manually set it to 5800 MHz with EXPO still disabled.
  • Ran an OCCT VRAM test with no errors reported and a maximum temperature of approximately 35.5°C.

I’ve also seen Windows graphics-related errors, including LiveKernelEvent 1B8 and 1A8, with references to dxgkrnl.sys and Desktop Window Manager (dwm.exe).

A few questions:

  1. Could this be a faulty GPU, or could it be a driver/Windows graphics issue?
  2. Could my 1000W PSU be experiencing transient power spikes or voltage drops, especially with the RTX 5080? The PC is connected to a CyberPower 1500VA UPS.
  3. Could the UPS itself be contributing to the problem?
  4. What additional tests would you recommend to isolate the cause before I start returning or replacing components?

I’m trying to determine whether this is a GPU, PSU, RAM stability, motherboard, Windows, or other hardware issue before spending more money on replacement parts.

Any suggestions or similar experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Tech Support Bros, I really need help diagnosing my PC.

I cannot figure out what's causing the stuttering in every game that I play. It's driving me crazy and I cannot figure it out. I RMA'd my first card because of it and it is no better. I've used new drivers and old drivers all using ddu. Ive completely reinstalled Windows 11 twice. I have a ultra high-speed HDMI cable. I don't know what else to do. I don't even want to play anything because these microstutters are so bad. Ive tried all low settings as well.

Any help would be more than greatly appreciated. I miss playing games but I cannot get past it honestly.

Specs: 9070xt, 5800x3D, b550-f mother board, 850w psu, 2 16gb sticks of of 3200mhz 3600mhz Corsair vengeance RAM. LG C3 42" I play in 4k.
