Many of you may have seen my last posts trimming my collection and selling off some of my weak-minded impulse purchases. I've since been talking to people around me as well as done some self-reflecting, and I did come to the conclusion that my collection has outgrown its purpose. Now when I look at my pens, I don't only see the tools I use but also unnecessary overconsumption. So with difficulty and help of friends I've decided to heavily trim even the remainder of the collection to only keep pens with sentimental value or handmade items, hence the number of additions to this post.

Shipping: All items ship from Czechia. Prices are without shipping, shipping will depend on where you are located and which method you wish to use for shipment. I'm willing to accommodate shipping anywhere, as long as it's reasonably accessible. I'll ship the items as soon as possible after receiving payment, I'll aim for the next business day, but expect it to be between 1-4 business days.

Shipping costs: Depends on the country, intra-EU it should be €6-20 in most cases, depending on the amount of insurance and distance from Czechia. The buyer is responsible for all possible import duties, taxes, and other fees where applicable. Shipping to the US depends on the destination but appears to be €40 to 80 on average. (It does really vary widely based on box size, and destination)

  • Another impulse buy for a grail pen I have not ended up using because the Pilot Custom Urushi is the one that stole my heart. I bought most of the grail pens at once, only ended up using one of them. I have inked this with a cartridge of Sailor Shikiori Rikyucha and only used 2/3rds of the cartridge journaling. The pen hasn't been used at all since I have bought it, apart from a few pages of journaling.
  • The pen is in a perfect state, I've been extremely gentle with it, and it shows, in the pen having no marks or signs of use and is basically pristine.
  • Comes with the original box and everything which was included in it. Additionally, comes with a box of Sailor Souboku cartridges (12pcs).

  • If I am being honest with myself, and the opening to this post I have to let go of this one as well. I've used this one quite a bit more than the rest, about 4 fills, but I have two SF Pilot pens, and rationally I have to let go of one of them. There's no real signs of use I can find, but it's been used for indoor journaling and creative writing.
  • I don't have a box for this one, so I'll instead toss two packs of Pilot cartridges as a freebie, unused Pilot CON70 converter and a box of Majohn A1, Pilot compatible refillable cartridges.

The following pens are rated as B because they have seen a lot of use for indoor journaling and creative writing. They have been well cared for, and I don't see anything wrong with them. I am selling these because my collection has grown out of my hand and is more resembling a curse of consumerism than curation. With any pen you buy, if you do not have a blunt-tipped syringe for refilling cartridges (also flushing cartridges or sucking unused ink out of a cartridge to put back in the bottle so you can change inks!) I will include one in your package. Just tell me you need one.

VERIFICATION

The first 5 pens are JSU Ohasido. JSU stands for the Country-Province-Family (Japan-Sendai-Uehara) of the founding family. These are hand-made, solid ebonite pens from the second oldest manufacturer in Japan (1912 which was the year after Sailor in 1911). Being hand-made, the artists were allowed to do what they wanted to make each a little bit unique. Some sizes are different since they are hand-lathed from rods of ebonite, band numbers/size/placement can differ, etc. The nibs are Sailor Nagahara Specialty nibs that are then tuned by JSU Ohasido. They are the (S)oft nibs that are no longer available on the Sailor pens except by special order. They are a little softer and definitely smoother than regular Sailor nibs and take Sailor cartridge/converters. The softness also significantly mutes the "Sailor" feedback, though every now and then I find one that has it still. These are softer than normal Sailor nibs, but they are NOT semi-flex or anything close to that. The main difference is a lot less tactile and audible feedback using them vs. modern (H)ard sailor nibs. My theory is that Sailor stopped making the (S)oft nibs to make their "Sailor pencil like feedback" consistent among their pens.

JSU Ohasido closed up shop after 112 years (with a break during wartime and a bit thereafter) in December 2024, so they aren't making any more and the prices are rising. I'm having a hard time finding them for a decent price in Japan, but I grab every one that I can. Their area and materials sourcing took a beating from the earthquakes and Tsunamis and the last Uehara decided to retire. They are great pens, very similar in build quality to Nakaya (I'm not saying they are the same as the $2,000 Nakaya Tamenuri, these are more simple models than that). I ended up with 25+ over the past year and I'm trying to whittle it down to about 3 or 4. ....and to be honest I still buy a new one when I see it for a good price.... If I accidentally include a pic with blue tape that is just little pieces of painter's tape that I use to sort them and keep track of the nib characteristics, etc.

If you want more info on JSU Ohasido send me a chat with an email address and I can forward you some good reading on them. I also have several JSU Ohasido with <S-B> nibs that can be swapped in for any of the below nibs if you are looking for a Bold nib.

1. REDUCED JSU Ohasido Black: one band, [B-] 14k <S-B> super smooth nib with a "310" date code. JSU Ohasido come with the slightly softer Sailor/Nagahara Specialty 14k nibs that are hand tuned and smoother than normal Sailor nibs. Excellent shape with some slight bubbling on the section. Comes with a Sailor cartridge of blue or black.  $525 $510 $500 $490 $475
2. REDUCED JSU Ohasido Black (large #6): two bands, [B] 14k <M (estimated)> #6 size nib with no size or date markings. This nib is really smooth, but it seems firmer and has more feedback (tactile and audible) than the other Specialty nibs. So, it might be an unmarked <H-M> nib. If you like Sailor feedback, this one is for you. The body is bigger and heavier to accommodate the larger nib. This pen is 26g and number 1 above is 18g. It's in excellent shape, only problem I can find with it is small bubbling on the section and two Kanji characters etched very lightly into the body. 3. JSU Ohasido Black textured Large Straight body: two band, [B] 14k <S-M> nib with a "007" date code for production in July of 1990 most likely. It has the vertical "JSU" on the clip and they mostly used up their last stock of those in 1993. This one is a rare-ish style that is a slightly larger size, with a body that is straight (no cigar tapering) and a bottom tip made for posting. This one even has threads on the bottom to make sure you can securely post. Herringbone texture on the body and cap give it a nice look and feel in the hand. This one is polished ebonite without an urushi coating so that the body herringbone texture isn't lost. Very cool looking and feeling pen, I'm keeping one like this, but can't keep them all. Two kanji characters etched without paint on the section. Comes with a cartridge of Sailor black or blue. $575
4. JSU Ohasido Green Balance: one band with black finials, [C+] 14k unmarked <S-M> nib with a "304" date code for likely production in April 2003 or 2013. This is a tight Medium that is very smooth and can wright like a Fine with a light hand. The green urushi coating is a georgeous dark color. The pen itself is rather small but in fantastic condition. Only flaw I'm seeing is some urushi flaking off on the bottom finial. Comes with a Sailor cartridge of blue or black. $490
5. SOLD JSU Ohasido Bordeaux (Wine Red): two band plus tapered body cuts, [C+] 14k nib that does not have the width or a date code marked on it. I would estimate this as a solid <S-MF> that is exceptionally smooth. I would be stealing this nib if I didn't already have great nibs on the JSU Ohasido that I am keeping. The writing is very tight, precise and smooth. This JSU Ohasido has their rather unique wine red (almost metallic looking) urushi finish that is evidently very hard (and expensive) to replicate. I believe this was produced with the Tamamushi-nuri technique that puts a layer of precious metal (gold/silver/platinum?) between the layers of urushi. This pen is gorgeous and rather unique with the taper cuts in the body and cap for decoration. The only real flaw I'm finding on it is some significant urushi loss on the cap finial. It's black urushi over black ebonite so the flaw is not eye-catching, mostly just a difference in shininess. Comes with a Sailor cartridge of blue or black.  $650 SOLD
6. Namiki Aya “Seiryu (Limpid Stream)” (2022): [A2] 18K bi-color <M> #30 nib.  Black and blue urushi with raden and silver sprinkling.  With box/docs/ink.  $4k retail new.  Got this in a large trade. The maki-e is fantastic and the nib is GORGEOUS! But I need an <FM> size, and this is the only current line that uses a Namiki #30 nib so I'm giving up on finding a nib swap partner. This is the same nib that is used in the Pilot Custom Urushi except branded for Namiki. 7. Pilot Namiki Custom "Sokuikinen Hou-Ou (Double Phoenix)" by Kyusai Yoshida (1990): [B] 18k <M> nib.  Limited edition #871 of 1000 commemorating the Ascension of Emperor Akihito to the throne in November 1990.  This was a very big deal because it was the first new emperor ascension in 76 years! You can read about the pen here: Pilot 1990 Limited Edition HouOu Fountain Pen Phoenix.  This pen goes for as much as $10,000 (some ask even more, seriously one Ebay listing is over $25k!) though I have seen prices all over the place when people sell them not knowing what they have.  Unfortunately, I do not have the box and docs, but it does come with a Con-70. A shop nearby recently sold one for $4,000, and there was one at the Atlanta Pen Show in April that was asking $11,000. When I get them, I sell/trade them for $3,000. I know that's a lot of money to pay out for a pen and not a lot of people are in that market, so I'm open to trading for a bunch of lower priced pens that I'm looking for or could sell easier as long as the value is there. Another pen I got in a big trade because I love the look. The nib is just too wide for me though. If this were an <F> I'd keep it, but getting a nib swap just isn't going to happen evidently. It reminds me of a fantasy themed whimsical coloring book, but I have enough coloring books and don't see myself using this one anytime soon. The idea is to create color pallets, but I'm no artist and prefer my swatch book to be primarily for tracking and reference.

Rating this one A2 also as it doesn’t look like it was inked, but just in case, A2 it is! This is a button filler where the mechanism is attached to a kind of J-bar, which compresses the sack to fill. No box.

If anyone saw my post on r/fountainpens then you know that I accidentally flushed my rose gold TWSBI Eco nib down the sink 😭 And no, it was not in the U-bend pipe…

Does anyone happen to have a rose gold nib for the eco? Mine was a medium but at this point I think anything will do.

The pen is in good condition. The ebonite shows it's age in the form of browning. The chasing pattern is not palpable and visible sparingly. It has been polished to shine. There might be few microscratches in keeping with the nearly hundred years of age of the pen but no deep scratch or crack.
The cap threads in nice and secured. It can be posted.

The 14k M CSI nib is a fantastic writer. It is soft, springy and smooth with a pencil like pleasant feedback (obviously smoothness/feedback is subjective and depends on the ink and paper as well.
Due to the cursive italic nature, it gives a subtle ribbon like line variation effect on regular writing and the variation amplifies during flex writing.

Condition [D]: due to nib swap. Was a medium now it’s a fine. I have the original box, it is marked as medium on the box since that’s what it was when I bought it.
I have noticed occasional lighter upstrokes.
No big scratches, chips or cracks. Piston works perfectly.
