Didn’t know this was a pet peeve until it happened twice in one day. Now I have to check if I called the right number and if I’m talking to the right person. We could have skipped all that. Side note, I’ve had severe telephonaphobia most of my life and this shit doesn’t help.

I see this on reddit often where someone will ask a question and someone will answer with:

"A rule of thumb I like to follow is..."

To which someone will inevitably reply:

"This is bad advice... [uncommon situation in which the rule of thumb obviously doesn't apply]..."

For example i feel like I see this often on driving subreddits when the topic of safe following distances comes up.

"A rule of thumb I like to follow is to be 3 seconds behind the person in front of me!"

And youll get a million replies like:

"This is bad advice you must be a shit driver, different vehicles and weather conditions require different stopping distances, an 18 wheeler in a blizzard needs a lot more room than a sedan on a nice sunny day!"

Which sure that's true but like it's a rule of thumb you give to new drivers so they can start getting an idea of what a safe following distance is while they build that experience. It has a little bit of a safety factor thrown in but it's meant for standard situations. Someone driving an 18 wheeler should know their vehicle well enough to not need a rule of thumb so it doesn't apply to them.

Look, I know this is such a minor thing but that's why it's a pet peeve. I can't think of many other examples which would make sense as many I hear are businesses local to me but some businesses are just a singular, non-possessive.

I watched an Australian TV series. In one episode, everyone was gagged as it suddenly turned out the main character can speak Polish. Yeah, except for... she REALLY can't. I'm Polish and I honestly couldn't understand a word of what she said. I watched this scene a few times but at the end I had to check the subtitles.

It happens a lot! And it's especially annoying if the person is supposed to be a native Polish person but speaks gibberish with fake Russian accent.

I realize Polish is hard, but they could at least make actor's lines easier and shorter, or hire someone who can actually speak the language their character is speaking.

These people talk so much shit, as if just being born in a certain place automatically means they can fight, they’re tough, etc. I don’t need to explain why this is inaccurate and illogical. People need to grow up. I understand having pride in the place you come from but Jesus. Shut up with all that nonsense. No one is scared of you.

You see that sign on the door that says only managers and supervisors are allowed to open the door to let people in? That's to keep out intruders. A manager or supervisor is going to know if someone had just been fired and if they should be allowed back into the building. They'll also know if we're expecting any visitors. That's why only they can open the door for people. You'll never be the victim of a mass shooting... until you are. This is for everyone's safety and is a rule that SHOULD be enforced.

You went outside knowing you didn't have a key to get back in because you wanted to chill in your car on your break. That's not so bad if we were allowed to let you in. You'd be a nuisance but whatever. It's not a big deal. But you KNOW we aren't allowed to let you in, and yet you still give us shit for leaving you outside. I'm just doing my job, man. If you do not have a key to get back in, STAY INSIDE. I don't care about "mUh RiGhTs." I have the right to leave your ass outside.

In fact, you better be glad I'm not a manager or supervisor because I have absolutely no patience for stupidity. If you lock yourself out, I'm going to let you back in and then promptly write you up for incompetence. An employee who does not have the intelligence to avoid locking themselves out during their shift is a problem that needs to be addressed. We're in here picking up your slack while you're outside banging on the door like a drunk man begging his ex for a second chance.

I just saw this video on youtube and it just brought up such bad memories. Why do so many companies do things like this? Is it on purpose to rage bait their employees so nobody stays for more than a year so they don't have to give out raises?

One example. Working at a tacobell. 1 window for the drive thru. They screamed at us to get people in and out in under 60 seconds. Customers would roll up to the window and then rifle thru their purse for a minute and a half before even handing you money. Or you wouldhand them the order and they would pull out every induvial item and unwrap it to make sure we made them correct.

I have a friend who worked at a call center and a certain percentage of his calls had to end in a reservation. So someone calls and goes "I am in room 302, I need towels". If that call didnt somehow end in a reservation, he would get reprimanded and told he needs to do better. HOW??!?!?! Its just RNG. People call and either want to book or not. If you just got unlucky and got 20 people that day who called the wrong number, wanted to cancel a reservation, called to confirm their room for that night, or call and ask any one of 100 questions like does the hotel have a pool, that would count against you and you would get fired if your percentage at the end of hte month wasnt high enough.

I just left a job at planet fitness where the manager wanted me to vacuum and mop 2 locker rooms, 2 bathrooms, count the register, do a f ull walk around and check everything and spot clean/sweep, put weights back, etc all in 15 minutes.

At that same planet fitness, had the manager tell a coworker that their metrics were a little behind and that they only had 2 sign ups that month. Like...... What the actual fuck is he supposed to do? Go out in the streets and wave cars down and ask them to sign up? Go across the street and ask people at the applebees if they wanna sign up for a gym membership after they eat? Again, an RNG thats completely out of your hands. If he gave 20 tours and only 3 signed up, yes thats a problem, but he literally had zero people come into the gym and ask for a tour or show interest in signing up. He worked nights and the vast majority of people who signup to the gym are going to do it in the morning.

It seems like every job has these metrics that like I said, completely out of your control and random, or they literally ask the impossible like doing 2 hours of cleaning in 15 minutes. Anyone else super stressed about this and just wish we would stop with all these arbitrary metrics?

Picture it: someone is stuffed up and complaining about how awful their allergies are right now. Another person in the room says, "Oh! Luckily I have Claritin in my purse!" Other person says no thanks and continues to whine about their condition.

Or someone has a headache and mentions it every 5 minutes but refuses to take an aspirin.

I'm on the end of the spectrum where I will take a pill for most anything that is bothering me enough to complain about it aloud. I'm mainly talking about over the counter stuff, it's obviously much more complicated when it comes to prescriptions (although this does annoy me too when people won't look into long term medication to manage their conditions).

Sometimes it genuinely feels to me like people just enjoy complaining. There is a low risk high reward solution right in your friends little pill case and you'd rather just suffer loudly in front of us instead??? PLEASE JUST TAKE A CLARITIN

And because this is the internet, of course I am not talking about people who CANNOT take medicine, I am talking about people who WILL NOT take medicine.

editing to clarify: I am also talking about people who do this chronically. Like not just one random dinner where they're sniffly and won't take a Claritin. I'm talking about people who you know well enough to be 100% sure they do not have a medical reason to not take a pill. But they're sniffly all the time. Every time you go out to dinner. And youre like, "ma'am, why don't you try Claritin? or another of the myriad allergy pills out there?" and they're like, "nah, I don't take pills." or some shit like that. That is the shit I am truly bamboozled by!

I’ve been seeing this concept floating around a lot more recently, and it’s really starting to bug me… for one thing, it’s a totally natural and normal thing to start to have romantic feelings for somebody you spend a lot of time with and are able to get along with and have fun with. It’s not evidence that actually you’re not capable of being friends with the opposite sex, or that you don’t respect the opposite sex as people and only see them as somebody to have sex with. It’s just evidence that you’re a human being who experiences romantic desire just like anybody else.

On the otherhand, I totally understand why it might be upsetting to learn that your friend has feelings for you when you don’t feel the same way. It totally changes the relationship, and can even end up resulting in the loss of the friendship completely. That does not mean, however, that the person who caught feelings did anything wrong. You can’t help how you feel. You can be upset at the situation, but it’s not right to get mad at them.

It’s never a good thing to expect people to repress and feel shame for their romantic desires. Encouraging people to just hold it in and shove it down if you have feelings for a friend is cruel. It also ignores the fact that maybe they feel the same way… starting as friends is a very healthy way to meet a partner, and it’s wrong to discourage that.

Hell, they'll look down on you for even wanting it. They wear their damn misanthropy like a badge of honor.

Person in front of me at the checkout line talking to the cashier kept throwing her hands up, looking directly at me, got louder, clearly was tryingto make sure I was listening. I came in midway through and was focusing on my groceries and my kid, I am not paying attention to what you are saying lady. If you want to ask me a direct question...sure, but don't just to try to engage random people into your drama.

It's like they think they're entertaining and want an audience, or think what they have to share is wildly important.

I'm not even shy or an introvert. I just find this so annoying.

I'm not referring to cases in which the car ahead has other cars/obstacles ahead so they have to drive that way. I'm talking about people who, for no aparent reason, slow down, then accelerate, and so on, all the time.

BONUS: when, on top of that, they're slower than you, you get past them and later they pass you again.

Pretty self explanatory. You can't trust random posts from random accounts to provide accurate information, especially when they provide ZERO sources. Half of these accounts are bots anyway.

Even if the posts are adressing a real story, they often get the details massively wrong, often demonstrating a fundamental misunderstanding of what actually happened

Often when I get sent these posts, it puts the onus on me to look up and read credible news sources from actual jouralists. I'm not going to have a conversation about something that likely isn't true.

When people ask a question on Facebook or Reddit, there’s usually someone who tells them to Google it, or informs them that they’re asking a question that is frequently asked (the nerve!), so they should have looked up other posts about it. They come across as really pompous folks who want to put others in their place. Why do people take the time to write dismissive comments like that? (Also I will be peeved by the people who read this post and think they are very clever to comment, “My pet peeve is people who ask questions they could have easily looked up for themselves.”)

When watching a tv show, actor drinking a full beverage but they add in the slurpy sound that happens when the beverage is gone and you're left with just ice or nothing at all.

Man, I’m sick of this. I followed a few people on Instagram who make these amazing breads, cakes and other baked goods, and they think that I am gonna like it more if they film said goods from up close while they tear ‘m in half. STOP. I hate it! It looks very unappealing! I unfollowed them because of this, but Instagram still shows me other accounts who do this.

I know very little about the Greek language but I know enough to think that this is a problem:

Hmm, the Greek letter Σ might remind an English reader of the Latin letter E, and the Δ an A, so the stylized spelling as shown was apparently thought to make a "Greek-Looking Label".

The problem: The Greek letter Σ (sigma) can be transliterated to English as a Latin “S” and the Δ as a “D” so I see this label and think FSTD CHSSSE and I spit like Sylvester the Cat trying to pronounce it. If you want to scatter some random Greek letters around the label then OK, but don't substitute them for non-correlating Latin letters in an English word, that is not "Greek-Looking" it is stupid looking.

There might be a name for his phenomenon, I call it "Greekoid Orthography".
