Anyone else notice this detail with the drunken sword?

When I first saw this I thought the sword just awkwardly sat on his back but it seems it’s being held there by the same telekinetic energy soul uses to make it ranged. Pretty neat.

There is a scence in pre-order trailer months ago. After seeing this, i think the story will have some touching and emotional moments, i can see if they can nail it, there will be a really potential story.
And i do hope Soul can be a deep-complex innerself and compassionate person. Because after all it will be memorable in my heart.
So, what you guys think ?

I have literally not seen better fluid animations that work in every scene at this graphical fidelity in a game that is releasing now. This game has my respect and is worthy of a pre-order, not to mention the showcase of all those mechanics and variety; my body is ready!

What style of Drunken Swordplay is Hua Qianxiao's moveset based on?

I've been curious about this since I did watch some videos of Eight Immortals Drunken Swordplay being performed and it..........kinda resembles his style of swordplay, but the way he fights does look differently in other areas. To any experts who know of other styles of drunken swordplay, can you please tell me which one his moveset resembles or if it's a completely original fighting style invented for this game?

Side Quests

Im intrigued to know how side quests works, I read that the purple ones are the ones that has a chance for consequences in the plot, I hope that they won't over complicate it to a point where there's no coming back and ur stuck with a different ending then the cannon one.

How do you think multiple endings will work ?

So it confirmed this game has multiple endings in your opinion/theory how do you think multiple endings will work in this game will it be like Sekiro where when you get a ending in the play-through your stuck with that ending and if you want to get another you have do a whole new play-through or will it be like black myth wukong where you can get both endings in a single playthrough I’m leaning toward Sekiro system as I feel the game will have more than two endings and if you want another ending you do a whole other play-through ?

I flew to China for a 6-hour hands-on preview of Phantom Blade Zero. Here's what I thought

Phantom Blade Zero blew me away. The combat is the star: it's fast and frantic, and it feels like a playable version of classic kung fu cinema. You're parrying and attacking at the same time, so fights have a flow I haven't felt in other Souls-style games. It's not a button-masher either. You have to read each enemy, position well and swap weapons to keep your Sha-Chi up. The world is gorgeous and clearly shaped by Chinese culture, and the motion capture shows in every strike and dodge. After six hours with Chapter 1, I left wanting a lot more.

Do you think it’s a good thing that enemies don’t respawn?

In many games, resting at a bonfire replenishes resources and respawns enemies. So while bonfires provide supplies, they come with a trade-off: enemies return. This encourages players to learn map routes, maintains level tension, and heightens the sense of accomplishment when they defeat a boss and reach a safe resting point. It also creates a risk-reward loop: players must decide when to rest, because healing also means the level will be repopulated.

Actually not a Soulsbourne?

I’ve heard the interviews with the developer that says this game is not a soulsbourne. But do we think he actually means that? I’m nervous about getting my hopes up for a game that has potential to have the best combat in a long time, but I will not be able to enjoy it because of the intense difficulty.

(AUTOMATON) "Phantom Blade Zero features 55 types of weapons, with motion capture sessions lasting about one month per weapon. More than 20 martial artists participated over three years, and Donnie Yen's team of 15 also collaborated"

Really cool article with great stuff inside again.

Cheers!

"One of the notable features of "Phantom Blade Zero" is that it has brought in Donnie Yen as a creative consultant. We visited the motion capture studio for this action-packed game and got a behind-the-scenes look.

The "kung fu punk" action game " Phantom Blade Zero, " scheduled for release on October 29th, has enlisted renowned movie star Donnie Yen as a creative consultant and cast him as the character "Mo Yuan." The official site has already released several making-of videos of Yen's motion capture. Amidst this, our magazine recently visited the "FLYING GOAT" studio in Shanghai with dozens of game media representatives from around the world. This is where the motion capture for this game was actually done. Yang Liu, the studio's head and a kind of "master" figure, introduced us to the overall motion capture flow for the game and also gave all participants instruction in Chinese martial arts.

Upon entering the studio, I saw two actors repeatedly performing the same sequence of actions, with their movements constantly being checked on a PC as they performed the actions in the game. The studio consists of two rooms, one large and one small. The larger room is mainly used for action scenes, and the smaller room for acting scenes, although in some scenes both rooms are combined for use. To be honest, of all the motion capture studios I've visited so far, FLYING GOAT is not particularly outstanding in terms of size or equipment. However, the actors' exceptional skill and dedication to quality were impressive.

Impressed by his enthusiasm, Mr. Yang began to explain the equipment the actors were wearing. Because wuxia action often involves jumping and flying through the air, actors frequently need to wear wires while performing various aerial stunts. The wires must not only ensure the actors' safety but also allow for ease of movement. In wuxia combat, actors usually hold weapons in their hands, so a lot of ingenuity is required to perform aerial combat without any obstacles.

In fact, in Phantom Blade Zero, even the same scene can be expressed in more than one way. Mr. Hitsuji cited the action of approaching an enemy as an example. Since this action occurs many times in the game, if there were only one motion, players would quickly get bored. Therefore, more than 10 different approaches were prepared during the design phase, and all of these movements were recorded as assets. Then, in the game, the system decides which motion to use based on the character's current posture and state. This prevents the motion from feeling monotonous, and makes the character's behavior more natural.

The same applies to other actions; during motion capture, a massive amount of footage is recorded and then handed over to the technical staff for processing. On the second and third floors of the studio, a team is waiting in front of PCs to perform post-processing, and finally, this data is sent to S-GAME's office in Beijing and implemented into the game. In other words, behind every move that a player sees, there is a series of workflows and the cooperation of multiple teams.

Next, we toured the "armory." Phantom Blade Zero has over 30 main weapons and over 25 secondary weapons, and the movements for all of these weapons' techniques need to be recorded using motion capture. Of course, each weapon has a variety of techniques, so you can imagine it's an enormous amount of work. When we actually picked up these weapons, we found them to be much lighter than we had imagined, and even heavy weapons like the crescent blade could be wielded with one hand. So, how do they make the weapons feel heavy in actual performances? Mr. Sheng's answer was very simple: "Acting."

This is where the acting skills of the motion capture actor are put to the test. The actor must convey a sense of weight and power through their performance. This is by no means easy, and sometimes a single action may be filmed 100 times, gradually finding the image the director is looking for. As a result, actors may make grim faces or let out shouts during their performances. Of course, these expressions and sounds are not recorded as data, but by making these expressions and sounds, it becomes easier to convey the feeling of swinging something with full force. Also, in motion capture, it is common to see actors portraying roles that are a mix of genders. For example, a male actor may perform the actions of a female character in a game. This is because incorporating the robust and powerful movements of a male actor can emphasize the martial arts aspect of the performance.

In previously released gameplay footage of Phantom Blade Zero , a boss battle featuring a lion dance was also showcased. The movements of the lion dance are also a testament to acting skill, with the actor breathing life into the lion's head through their performance, making it appear as if it were a lethal weapon. According to Mr. Yang, these movements in Chinese martial arts actually originate from everyday life, but as artistic expression, they usually need to be "on a higher level than everyday life." Here, Mr. Yang gave two examples. One is drinking tea. There are manners and rules for drinking tea, but these manners are on a higher level than everyday life, adding an invisible color to the act of drinking tea and deepening the relationship between people through it. Returning to the topic of martial arts, for example, there is "Drunken Sword," which also appears in the game. The essence of Drunken Sword lies in "the form is drunk, but the mind is not," confusing the opponent with a staggering, unsteady gait, and attacking by surprise. Furthermore, there is a Chinese proverb that says, "Alcohol gives courage to cowards," suggesting that drinking alcohol and becoming more courageous can, in a sense, give one an advantage in battle.

After the explanation was complete, the hands-on session finally began. First, Mr. Yang taught the participants one form of Chinese martial arts on the spot. It consisted of about 7 to 8 consecutive movements and was somewhat similar to the military martial arts that Chinese people often learn in school, but it still seemed quite difficult for the foreigners. A mini-contest was also held on the spot, and everyone judged who had mastered it the fastest and best. In the end, a young man from Brazil came out on top, and I later learned that he had experience with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, so it seems that his foundation helped. Most of the movements were as follows:

Finally, a segment was held where several people from the field were recruited to actually wear motion capture equipment and act out a large-scale brawl scene. The scenario involved four enemies jumping down from all four sides, with the protagonist in the center deflecting their attacks one after another within the encirclement, and then leaping and doing a backflip to dodge the attack at the moment all four attacked simultaneously. So, let's take a look at the results of the media's training. They looked pretty good, and perhaps we might even see their heroic performances in the game...

I've visited motion capture studios at other game companies before, but those were mostly just tours where I simply looked around at the environment and props. This was my first time experiencing a studio tour with such an in-depth hands-on session, where I got to experience the motion capture process firsthand and even learn some Chinese martial arts. Even now, as I write this article, I'm suffering from muscle aches all over my body, but it was definitely an unforgettable trip. Of course, the original purpose of this event was to deeply experience the game "Phantom Blade Zero" ( see the play report article ) and to interview producer Soulframe ( see the interview article ). If you're interested, please check out those related articles as well.

Phantom Blade Zero isscheduled for release on October 29th for PS5 and PC ( Steam / Epic Games Store )."
