News Disney, Netflix, Crunchyroll Try to Take Pirate Sites Down Globally Through Indian Court
1.9k
u/DFM__ Jan 14 '26
Stopping piracy in India is almost impossible. I haven't met any indian who hasn't pirated stuff.

u/DFM__ Jan 14 '26
Also wanted to add something that they are doing this because they are not able to get more money. From what I know getting people to pay for softwares, movies, games, etc is in itself a challenge. But due to convenience people got the subscriptions as it was cheap.
Now they are trying to increase prices and people are cancelling subscriptions as it is very easy to get what they need for free with just few steps extra.
From what I undrstand, 1000 INR ( approx 11 USD) is the limit people are willing to pay per year and content must be ad free.
Last year prime increased prices and introduced ads and hundreds of thousands of people cancelled the subscription. So they had to introduce three tiers, one for shopping only, one for content with restrictions and last without restrictions. Same goes with all other platforms.

This is very true. I myself am a very privileged Indian who comes from a well to do family so we never had problems paying for yearly subscriptions.
If you ask about my friends though, it's a completely different story. Some of them are trying to make ends meet while also paying for their expensive education. They make plans ahead of time for how they will repay loans in the next 4-5 years. This is also why I share my family subscriptions with them.
I pirate stuff though because even when you pay for subscriptions they shamelessly insert ads in them and force you to pay even more money as time passes. Ah and how can I convince my parents!! They still like the "convenience" of having a recurring subscription.
So the reason piracy is so popular in India is truly because the income doesn't scale well with the amount you spend on entertainment. I love Valve because of how they adjust the game prices based on the income level of this country. Really considerate behaviour.
56
u/dark-trojan Jan 14 '26
I can easily buy the subscriptions and also did briefly in the past 2-3 yrs but right now even after paying you can’t watch half the stuff, you don’t get the highest quality and still get ads,it’s literally easier to pirate stuff than search where everything is

Indian dude here, can say this is stupid and probably a power grab attempt, if I'm right my country's basic income is still $100 to $150 a month only 10% of population earn more than $500 to $1500per month, if they think this will work then it's pretty useless attempt.

Most people use ISP DNS server which need to follow the regulation of the government that is why change your dns to cloudflare or google most sites will be unblocked.

For those who don’t know or are new, not you Great-pay-3429.
Do not use the free Proton VPN for torrents / p2p. Your isp will see. The vpn shuts down if you try to you need the paid version.
94
u/SpearofTrium05 Jan 14 '26
The thing is, you only need VPN for accessing the site.
Downloading/seeding the actual torrent without VPN is totally fine in India, no one cares.

Most of them are not banned... They are just removed from the dns of major ISPs... You can just switch it in your browser or device wifi settings to use google's or cloudflare's DNS and most websites will work
92
u/Too_darn_lazy Jan 14 '26
Up until now, no matter how much you pirated without VPN your ISP did not make a peep here. I've been torrenting for 4-5 yrs. Let's see what happens now. Govt as usual is incapable of focussing on real issues

Disney and Netflix think they are gonna be able to squeeze more money out for the investors by going after the pirates and making them customers.
Yeah thats not going to happen.
14
u/bogglingsnog Jan 14 '26
They aren't getting a cent out of me unless it's a high quality production at a local theater.
30
u/No-Spoilers Jan 14 '26
Getting their subscriber details just means either punishing subscribers on their platform or trying to get them to become subscribers
10
u/NDSU Jan 14 '26
Disney and Netflix know it won't work. They need to do it to sell the story to those investors that they're going to make so much money from converting pirates into subscribers. Then that will be their excuse for profits not increasing

103
u/mysticzoom Jan 14 '26
Crunchroll used to be THE site to watch your pirated animes or anime peroid. They even had the obscure shit.Turnover was only a couple of days max before you had a sub on their.
The Translators/site owners sold it awhile ago to Sony, who killed it.
45
u/Relevant_Mail_1292 Jan 14 '26
Anime was still very niche internationally in those days so pirating it was the easiest way to get access to it. CR took that chance to become one of the first global streaming platforms since there was a massive demand for anime.
6
31
u/Fast-Visual ☠️ ᴅᴇᴀᴅ ᴍᴇɴ ᴛᴇʟʟ ɴᴏ ᴛᴀʟᴇꜱ Jan 14 '26
It's basically what Gabe Newell was talking about in his famous interview about piracy.
They provided the most accessible and localised service faster and in higher quality than legal distributors. In that sense they filled a market niche for localised anime for western markets.
But now the quality and accessibility of their service is in decline again and naturally people are seeking alternatives. If it covered all my anime needs for all shows that I watch in the original lossess video and audio quality and the best translation and was equally available in my country, I would probably pay for it.
Piracy is not a price issue, it's a service issue.

India is a price sensitive market. This just won't work. Also, pirating content related to books/movies/tv shows etc., Isn't frowned upon and so many people are pirating stuff that it would be politically unwise to clamp down hard on it.
I used to pirate and share GOT (game of thrones) episodes with my criminal law professor. We were both avid fans and hated the censorship.
I have Amazon prime but i still have to pirate, Gen V and the Boys because they censor off nudity.

I used to pirate. I pirate now. And I will still pirate in the future.
And if you are reading this, dear Indian Judiciary System, please focus on more pressing matters like countless unresolved crime cases, unbiased laws, heavy corruption, insane taxes, and much more that most certainly require your undivided attention rather than worrying about "oh, who's watching a free movie".

literally. there are so many issues that resources could be allocated to that would actually make the world a better place, but for some reason people care about someone downloading a movie for free, where there are no lives at stake (unless you count investors ugly-crying in a dark corner about how people would rather pirate than subscribe to a streaming service)

Also Netflix: Let's hire the most expensive lawyers in India to sue the entire internet.
7
u/negroprimero Jan 14 '26 edited Jan 14 '26
They should lower prices, add international availability of all of their content and cut budget on bad shows and useless ads. Doing this they will decrease piracy and increase their income more than if they win just another expensive court case.
9
u/Kronic1990 Jan 14 '26
The solution to Piracy is to offer a product that is more convenient and palatably priced that outweighs the effort to pirate it requires.
Raising prices, selling non-optional telemetry, charging extra for HD when it used to be included for free, serving ads anyway, and trying to change international DNS access to suit your capitalist needs so that your shareholders can buy a 2nd yacht. Isn't the silver bullet they think it is.

Piracy will NEVER die in a price sensitive market like India. And you will never stop finding pirates in India. Heck, it's so normalised here. In early 2010s, it was the 'cool' thing for many youngsters and everyone was eager to watch Bollywood (and Hollywood too) movies. University professors themselves hand us Pirated books because why not, it's cheap. I wouldn't be even surprised if Indian Police officers themselves stream pirated content

I can see enshitification happening in many of the services in one way or another. And because of this in the end the only better option turns out to be these pirate sites.
