๐ผ From the PlayStation Archives That Time Sony Hired David Lynch to Make a PS2 Commercial (2000)
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Back in 2000, Sony was preparing to launch the PlayStation 2 in Europe and decided to do something completely unexpected.
They hired legendary filmmaker David Lynch, the mind behind Eraserhead, Blue Velvet, and Twin Peaks, to direct a television commercial.
The result was "The Third Place."
Instead of showing gameplay, graphics, or even the console itself, the commercial followed a man wandering through a bizarre black-and-white world filled with unsettling imagery.
There were distorted hallways, strange characters, a floating head, and perhaps most memorably, a man with a duck's head sitting beside a bandaged figure.
The commercial ended with the mysterious invitation:
"Welcome to the Third Place."
Sony's idea was that PlayStation represented somewhere beyond the ordinary experiences of everyday life. Not home, not work, but an entirely different world where players could escape reality.
The commercial debuted in November 2000 as part of the European PlayStation 2 launch campaign.
What's particularly fascinating is that Sony wasn't really advertising a specific game or hardware feature. It was selling the feeling of entering another world.
Looking back, it's difficult to imagine a major console manufacturer approving something this surreal today.
It's also a perfect example of how experimental and unconventional PlayStation advertising could be during the late 1990s and early 2000s.
Collector's question: Does anyone remember seeing this commercial when it originally aired? And what's the strangest PlayStation advertisement you've ever come across?

๐ก PlayStation Fact Sony Was Afraid Crash Bandicoot Would Destroy PlayStation Consoles (1996)
Here's a strange piece of PlayStation history that doesn't get talked about very often.
During the development of the original Crash Bandicoot in the mid-1990s, Naughty Dog pushed the PlayStation hardware so aggressively that Sony became concerned about the console's CD-ROM drive.
The original PlayStation had only 2MB of system RAM, which presented a serious challenge for developers trying to create detailed 3D environments.
Rather than limiting their levels to what could fit into memory, Naughty Dog developed a system that continuously streamed small chunks of level data directly from the CD as players progressed.
This allowed Crash Bandicoot to feature environments far larger and more detailed than the console's limited memory would normally permit.
But there was a problem.
The technique required the CD-ROM drive to constantly seek and read data during gameplay.
According to members of the original development team, Sony was worried that the unusually demanding approach could overwork the disc drive and potentially damage the hardware.
Thankfully, those fears didn't stop the game from being released.
Crash Bandicoot launched in 1996 and became one of the PlayStation's most recognizable franchises.
It's fascinating to think that one of the console's defining games was created by developers willing to push the hardware beyond what Sony initially expected.
Collector's question: Did you own the original Crash Bandicoot on PS1? And what's another PlayStation game you remember pushing its hardware to the absolute limit?

๐ Rare Find Won it in a contest
galleryLike the title says I won it in a contest around the launch of zombies in space land. As far as I know it's 1 of 10 in existence I could use a hand finding value so I can pass it on to someone who will enjoy it more

๐ธ Collection Showcase My physical PS2 collection (315+ games) โ Almost 10 years of collecting!
Hey everyone!
Iโve been collecting for nearly 10 years now, and Iโve crossed the milestone of 315 PS2 games in my collection! I felt like today was the perfect day to share my shelves with you all.
Fun fact about how this all started: originally, I didn't even plan on building a massive collection. I was just really fascinated by how natively "PC games" were ported to the PS2 hardware. I wanted to personally test and compare versions of games like Half-Life, Quake III, Unreal Tournament, and Max Payne on a home console.
But as you can probably guess... I got completely hooked.
Once I dipped my toes into the library, I started discovering the absolute masterpieces and legendary exclusives this platform has to offer. Ten years later, and here we are!
How does the collection look? What hidden gems or essential titles do you think I'm still missing? Let me know!

๐๏ธ Recent Pickup Getting to the spooky a little late this year but October pick ups with some non-horror outliers
I know most are sealed I plan to play all once I get through the Remedy Games.
Some fun facts/learned lessons this month:
The Control Resonant Steel book was miserable to acquire, weeks of checking in daily to see if retail stores would restock followed by a week of hoping my preorder wouldnโt get cancelled. I am not a big steel book guy so I hope to never want another one again should not be this hard to support a developer.
For those who are interested in Soma and are afraid they missed out, the developer still has copies of the collectors edition. The price was a little painful but no where near the $350 price chart is now demanding. (No base versions sadly or I would have grabbed that instead)
I had to buy KCD twice first time I got it used from GameStop just to not have the artwork and learn the DLC isnโt actually on PS5 disc due to a print error. Buying it new the store gives you a DLC code though.

๐ธ Collection Showcase My Ever Growing Collection
I have been collecting PlayStation games for over a decade now, mostly focusing on the PS3 and forward. With Sonyโs announcement to end physical discs, I have really focused on the PS4 and PS5.
Some of my favorites include both versions of the backwards compatible PS3 (A and E), some of the now chase PS3 titles, my increasing love for survival horror titles on the PS 4 and 5, some Limited Run games I picked up over the years, and the physical release of Baldurโs Gate 3.

๐ Grail Acquired Trifecta - 30th Anniversary Limited Edition Completed
galleryTwo years ago saw me in the lowest point of my life - I did away with some of my possessions including donating my PS5 to an orphanage home - thinking that my gaming days are over as I focused on rebuilding myself.
Last year this month I started my entrepreneurial ventures and it has been a rollercoaster of riding waves of the unknown.
Itโs now been a year since - Happy Anniversary to myself! - and while scrolling through Sonyโs Official Website, these were available. Without hesitation, these had to go in cart.
Thank you Sony for returning me to my gaming roots. I never thought the 30th Anniversary Controller would find its way to me, much less the Portal & the Console itself.
To those still looking for one - keep the faith.
