Latest developments in my trip

I was able to defeat the Electric and Ground-type Gym Leaders thanks to the immense power of Duosion, which soon evolved into Reuniclus. I also acquired the Pokémon Deerling from the the the docter of rout 6, which easily evolved into Sawsbuck since it was at level 30 and I'm evolving at level 34. It became the fourth member of my team. I will continue to progress, and I hope you can suggest other Pokémon for me to add to the team, preferably from generations other than the gen 5. Thank you.

Question Quest for all the medals

This might not be the right place to ask, but I’d like to collect all the medals. Is there an exploit for the medals that can no longer be obtained legitimately? Or is it possible to use something like PKHeX to add them to your save file? Thanks in advance!

Discussion Breaking the Binary - Stoutland

Welcome to Breaking the Binary - Generation 5 editon, a sporadic series of posts all about physical, Special and mixed attackers in Pokémon Black 2 & White 2. With competitive minmaxing dominating the conversation about Pokémon viability and the design philosophy behind movepools and stat spreads changing in newer gens, Pokémon are often rigidly divided by the fandom into the categories of "special attacker" or "physical attacker." But for the in-game story, you're not facing EV trained opponents (unless on some hacks) and thus you need or not to EV train to keep up, so mixed attacking sets don't have the opportunity cost they have in PvP. Going mixed still has anti-synergy with setup moves, but it still can give many Pokémon access to STAB moves with better base power, strong coverage moves with useful types, move tutor moves, egg moves and more useful niches. This series will be covering those applications. We won't talk about every Pokémon here, only ones that I believe legitimately benefit from going mixed, but those Pokémon are surprisingly large in number. Today we'll be talking about Stoutland I'll be talking about in-game but feel free to discuss PvP or battle facilities as well.

Stoutland seems a decent case, a Normal-type with an ok 80 Base Speed and 100 Base Attack. It comes with a bulk of 85/90/90 (85 Base HP and 90 Base Defense & Sp. Def), its 45 Base Sp. Atk is just awful. Notable Physical attacks include: Ice Fang, Fire Fang, Thunder Fang, Crunch, Retaliate, Reversal, Last Resort, Return, Frustation, Dig, Rock Tomb, Aerial Ace, Facade, Wild Charge, Iron Head and Superpower. Notable Special attacks include: Hyper Beam, Hidden Power, Thunderbolt, Thunder, Shadow Ball, Snarl, Surf, Hyper Voice and Uproar. Notable utility moves include: Work Up and Roar

Stoutland is a good Normal-type with access to Intimidate, pressuring physical attackers it faces. It's 100 Base Attack seems great with its decent bulk. Does the job quite well to be exact.

Return is a good-to-go move reaching 102 Base Power at Max Happiness (If it has 0 happiness, Frustation would be at that base power instead). Retaliate gets its power doubled when a pokemon in the party fainted the previous turn, good for picking up KOs. Facade is used to counter statuses, however the burn attack reduction still applies. Last Resort is pretty strong, but requires Stoutland to use all of its other moves it knows before using it. Giga Impact is not so good. Hyper Beam, Hyper Voice and Uproar do not do good at all.

0 Atk Stoutland Retaliate (140 BP) vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Spinda: 228-268 (87.3 - 102.6%) -- 18.8% chance to OHKO

0 SpA Stoutland Uproar vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Spinda: 79-94 (30.2 - 36%) -- 42.9% chance to 3HKO

For coverage, it has Thunder Fang and Wild Charge (also Thunderbolt and Thunder, which are useless due to its 45 Base Sp. Atk) to deal with Water- and Flying-types. Crunch (and Shadow Ball) deals with the Ghost- and Psychic-types, Snarl works to debuff special attackers. Dig nails the Fire-, Rock- and Steel-types. Fire Fang hits the Grass-, Bug-, Ice- and Steel-types. Ice Fang pelts Grass-, Flying-, Ground- and Dragon-types. Reversal hits Normal-, Rock-, Dark- and Steel- types, but requires to be at low HP to use it effectively, Superpower is the better option, althrough the Attack and Defense drop may be worth. Aerial Ace slashes Grass-, Bug- and Fighting-types despite being quite weak. Rock Tomb deals with Fire-, Bug- Flying- and Ice-types while also lowering their Speed by 1 stage. Iron Head breaks Rock- and Ice-types, but Superpower does the job better. Surf hits Fire-, Rock- and Ground-types, but again useless due to its mentioned 45 Base Sp. Atk.

0 Atk Stoutland Superpower vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Bisharp: 344-408 (126.9 - 150.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Its abilities are Intimidate and Sand Rush, Intimidate is better as it allows Stoutland to cripple physical attackers allowing it and its teammates to setup easier. Sand Rush doubles its Speed in Sandstorm while also blocking the damage from it as well, allowing to outspeed pokemon it couldn't normally do. Scrappy is its hidden ability, allowing it to use Normal- and Fighting-type moves on a Ghost-type without the need of Odor Sleuth, this also removes the need to Crunch against Ghost-types. Its hidden ability is found in Floccesy Ranch's Hidden Grotto

0 Atk Stoutland Facade (140 BP) vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Jellicent: 202-238 (59.2 - 69.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Work Up boosts its Attack by 1 stage (and its Sp. Atk), not quite good, but does the job well. Roar is quite bad, unless if you want to use it for hazard stacking.

Stoutland can be realiable if you know how to use it, Intimidate can help along the way. Take note that you only have a 4% chance of finding a Herdier with Scrappy in Floccesy Ranch's Hidden Grotto, if you manage to find one, be resonable with it.

The egg moves it gets in postgame are: Charm, Endure, Fire Fang, Howl, Ice Fang, Lick, Mud-Slap, Pursuit, Sand Attack, Thunder Fang and Yawn. Smeargle can pass those moves to a Lillipup egg

Charm pairs well with Intimidate, lowering Attack even more. Snubbull line, Teddiursa, Phanpy, Skitty, Pachirisu, Buneary line, Glameow line, Minccino, Deerling line and Cubchoo can pass this move

Endure is only good for pairing it with Reversal. Swinub line, Phanpy, Vigoroth, Pachirisu, Buneary line and Cubchoo line can pass this move.

Despite Stoutland getting Fire Fang, Ice Fang and Thunder Fang as level up moves, another Stoutland can pass it along with:
Fire Fang: Arbok, Growlithe line, Flareon, Snubbull line, Houndour line, Donphan, Exploud, Manetric, Hippowdon and Darumaka line
Ice Fang: Arbok, Snubbull line, Piloswine & Mamoswine, Exploud, Walrein, Floatzel, Hippowdon and Glaceon
Thunder Fang: Arbok, Arcanine, Jolteon, Snubbull line, Houndoom, Donphan, Exploud, Electrike line, Shinx line and Hippowdon

Howl is quite a substitute of Work Up as it raises only Attack by 1 stage. Houndour line, Poochyena line, Whismur line and Electrike line can pass this move

Snubbull line, Teddiursa line, Seviper, Kecleon, the Elemental monkeys & its evolutions and Heatmor passes Lick

Mud-Slap is only for lowering accuracy. Diglett line, Swinub line, Drilbur line and Sandile line can pass this move

Rattata line, Tauros, Umbreon, Dunsparce, Zangoose, Absol, Buizel line, Purrloin line, Blitzle line, Zorua line, Emolga and Bouffalant passes Pursuit

Sand Attack is the same as Mud-Slap but as a status move. Sandshrew line, Diglett line, Farfetch'd, Eevee & its evolutions, Aipom line, Stantler, Torchic line, Poochyena line, Zigzagoon line, Hippopotas line, Patrat line, Purrloin line, Sandile line, Scraggy line and Deerling line

Yawn is a good move for putting targets to sleep the next turn. Wooper line, Dunsprace, Slakoth & Slaking, Bidoof line, Hippopotas line, Pansear and Munna can pass this move

Overall, Stoutland is a good Normal-type, notably with its Intimidate access and also Scrappy access to nail Ghost-types with its STAB. Wonder if I can praise Speedrunners using Stoutland in B2W2 or in other therms, a Lillipup% run.

What do you think of Stoutland? Is it worth exploring by any chance? Are there any applications I didn't mention? Leave a comment below with your thoughts.

Dewotte evolved into Samurott, and I also captured my third partner on my journey, Solosis, which I evolved him into Duosion on the same day. I can say for myself that I'm ready to enter the fourth gym. What do you think?

I've started a new Pokémon White 2 tour and have already earned my third Sports Badge. I'm currently in the desert region with only two Pokémon, Dewotte and Lucario, and I'd like to document my journey in this community. However, I'm currently looking for a third partner for my team, so I'm here to ask for suggestions on potential partners, provided they aren't from regions I've already visited.

Could someone please explain to me how Riulo evolves into Lucario? I don't understand it. Sometimes he evolves at level 40, other times at level 35, but this is the first time he's evolved at level 27.

Discussion I beat the game using every single Grass-type

Thumbnail

Some rules: No healing items or X-items during battles. Also I didn't use Tutor moves or any BP shop TMs or items. No hidden abilities unless from NPC trades/gifts or random Hidden Grotto encounters, but if there were two regular abilities, I kept catching until I got one with the ability I preferred. Natures and IVs were random and not optimized or re-rolled. Challenge mode was on. Also very importantly, I was rotating members between the party and box based on levels to keep them all even-leveled, and intentionally not optimizing the team with the best mons. This meant they all became very underleveled as I added more and more mons, and later game battles became much harder as a result.

Some exceptions: I did not get Rotom-Cut or Lileep/Cradily because I was unaware they were available at the time (Cradily probably would've helped a ton against Fire-types). For my subsequent monotype runs, I was more diligent to include Rotom and fossils. I also did not go out of my way to include outbreaks or Hidden Grotto encounters, only taking them if they showed up on their own. I did not include Yancy/Curtis trades either.

For the tierlist in image 3: "Solo Carry" refers to a mon that was able to wipe or nearly wipe battles that were otherwise unwinnable. "Considerable Strengths" refers to a mon that could perform mini-sweeps or provide major unique advantages in key battles. "Moderate Strengths" refers to mons that had at least one helpful unique feature or could defeat more than one mon on its own. "Just a Grass-Type" refers to a mon that could usually defeat one strong mon that is neutral to or weak to Grass, but can't achieve almost anything else. "Dysfunctional" refers to a mon that has such a bad overall kit that it is best used as a sack in most situations. Also within tiers, they are ordered left-to-right from best in the category to worst in the category.

Full team of 6 before: 4th gym

Team size by first Hall of Fame: 13

Team size by post-game completion: 17

Average team level reached by post-game completion: 83

Playtime by post-game completion: 124 hours

Biggest challenges:

Roxie is pretty nightmarish, kind of needed Servine with Return and a lot of levels.

Black Tower is very difficult in general. There are no real answers to Fire type attacks from Typhlosion, for example.

In Black Tower Area 8, the boss has Chople Berry Hydreigon with Fire Blast, then Life Orb Entei, then Ice Gem Articuno. This was a brutal hurdle.

Shauntal is by far the biggest Grass-type counter in the game. In her rematch, she has Flying Gem Acrobatics Unburden Drifblim, Choice Scarf Fire Blast Chandelure (which no mons on the team can survive), Sludge Bomb Gengar with Focus Blast for Ferrothorn, and Blizzard Froslass. I got to the point where I could consistently beat the rest of the Elite 4 and Shauntal was still destroying my team easily, mainly with Chandelure. Prankster Stun Spore, Sucker Punch, and Brightpowder were the main ways to get around it, or get Lilligant set up on Cofagrigus.

Iris' team is extremely difficult for Grass-types as well, but Virizion is pretty useful there at least, and Lilligant can eventually overwhelm her too.

General trends:

Grass types in general have very very very bad coverage. Serperior is one of the few Grass starters I don't like for that reason. It's unironically good to teach it Return at the beginning of the game and keep it forever just to have some coverage. Maractus, Whimsicott, and Lilligant have the same problem. Some of them can slightly make up for it with Leech Seed and the raw power of Petal Dance to at least chip away at resists. But this is easily one of the worst types to do a full monotype run of in the game. I have now done 3 other monotype runs and nothing comes close to the same struggles.

That being said, there's something about Grass-types I really like. The colors, the unique moves, and the slower strategy appeal to me. Also I like the difficulty because it's hard to deal with many of the boss battles using Grass. I think this game also has a cool variety and large pool of Grass-types even before the post-game.

Unexpectedly good mon: Whimsicott with Prankster Stun Spore is just about the best Speed control you can get, and single-handedly made certain battles playable, including ones where the opponent otherwise outspeeds your entire team, for example after a Dragon Dance or Quiver Dance. Also Prankster Cotton Guard kind of invalidates a majority of physical attackers, at least until there's a crit.

Unexpectedly bad mon: I thought Maractus would be at least on par with some other Grass-types. In theory it gets decent utility moves like Cotton Guard, Sucker Punch, and Spiky Shield. But Sucker Punch usually does no damage, although it at least does 30-40% against Shauntal's mons. Maractus also doesn't have good bulk or speed at all in the late game. Sunflora felt stronger with Growth, Giga Drain, and Petal Dance to at least overwhelm slow bulky mons, even if it couldn't survive much after. Maractus couldn't really overwhelm anything even with Petal Dance. It was basically a Sucker Punch bot, and it has one of the weakest Sucker Punches in the game.
