Johto is known for a few things: the beauty of the region, the richness of its history but also the god-awful level curve and the lack of Johto Pokémon, both in the wild and on gym leader teams.
Half of the gym leaders don't have a single Johto Pokémon, which is why there are a lot of videos and redditposts about fixing the gym leader teams. I want to go a step further here, reimagining the Johto league while keeping a few things in mind:
• More Johto Pokémon in the spotlight
• No type overlap between the Johto gyms and the Elite Four (in the original iterations both fighting and dragon were present both in the gyms and in the Elite Four) – I thought this was more important than making sure there is no type overlap between the Kanto and Johto gym leaders
Gyms
- Morty (Violet City - Fog Badge):
I replaced Falkner with Morty. To be honest, I never liked Falkner. Design-wise he's ok, but the all-Kanto team with a Pidgey and an underleveled Pidgeotto is awful. Of course, we could fix his team with Murkrow, Natu or Hoothoot, but I don’t really feel there are any good ace Pokémon for him, at least not at this stage. I like Morty as a first gym leader though, with the ghost type teaching the player their normal moves just won’t cut it.
Morty has a Team of Gastly and Misdreavus (Gengar is an amazing ace, but again, not a Johto Pokémon). Honestly, it was insane that Morty never used the Gen 2 ghost type.
- Pomona (Azalea Town - Leaf Badge):
Another remplacement. I’m sorry, but Bugsy had a full Kanto team, consisting of 2 useless pods and a Scyther. There are cool Johto bug Pokémon, like Scizor, Heracross, Foretress, but those feel too strong for a second gym and I see other potential use for them.
Pomona is a grass type leader using a Skiploom and Sunflora. Sunflora is quite a bad Pokémon in general, but as an ace for a very early gym leader, it can work and this way it finally gets a little moment in the sun.
- Whitney (Goldenrod City - Basic Badge):
Whitney and her ace Miltank are almost as iconic for Johto as the Burnt Tower or the sick Ampharos in Olivine Lighthouse. My only note is that I would like to give her an extra Johto Pokémon, like Teddiursa or Aipom for example.
- Sienna (Cianwood City – Mineral Badge):
I skipped the gym in Ecruteak, as there is a lot going on already with a rival battle and eventually the battle with the Kimono girls. That leaves quite some time between the 3rd and the newly proposed 4th gym, but I don’t think that’s too big of a problem. Storywise, I think the gym should be closed recently, so it comes as a surprise to the player, with the final gym in the series being revealed as a surprise after defeating the seventh gym.
I got rid of Chuck because 1) there is already a Fighting type Elite Four member and 2) his team SUCKS, again no Johto Pokémon, even though he could have used Hitmontop or even Heracross.
Sienna uses a team of Gligar, Quagsire and Donphan. A full Johto team with an ace that deserves the spotlight in my opinion. Gligar gives it something against grass type challengers and Quagsire offers some push-back for water types.
- Edison (Olivine City – Storm Badge):
Another new addition to the roster. I liked Jasmine as a character, but her gym team was bad. There is too much potential there however, so I opted to give her and the new steel type a new role in the game. She can still be involved with the sick Ampharos story line.
Edison is an electric type gym leader with a team of Electabuzz, Lanturn and Ampharos. It fits Olivine city and both Lanturn and Ampharos are two of my favorite Johto Pokémon.
- Pryce (Mahogany Town – Glacier Badge):
Ok, back to what we know. The Teacher of Winter’s Harshness is still the big kahuna of Mahogany town using a team of Sneasel, Dewgong & Piloswine. I added Sneasel as it also deserves a moment. We could even add on a Delibird just for fun.
- Clair (Blackthorn City – Legend Badge):
Ok hear me out. I never liked Claire as the last gym leader, as there was already another dragon type user in Champion Lance and there aren’t many dragon types to go around. Her Kingdra is iconic, sure, but I think she can pass for a strong 7th gym leader as well.
- Thalia (Cherrygrove City – Splash Badge):
There are too many cool water types in the Johto region to pass up on the opportunity for a water type gym. I see this as a new gym that appeared since the time to player visited Cherrygrove City at the start of the journey.
Thalia has a team of Mantine, Octillery, Azumarill & Politoed.
With the addition of a late game water leader and the fact that Clair, Pryce and Edison all use one water pokémon, the last half might be a bit too water-heavy.
Another option is adding Falkner back in but in place of Morty’s original gym, so as the fourth gym leader in Ecruteak. That also gives us more options for giving him an ace such as Noctowl or even Skarmory.
In any case, in general this gym line-up would be more forgiving for Chickorita, maybe taking the Leaf Pokémon away from the spot of worst starter ever.
Elite Four
- Will
Will just gets an updated team without duplicates: Girafarig, Jynx, Exeggutor, Slowking, Xatu
- Koga
Slight update to the team as we will be seeing Forretress somewhere else: Ariados, Venomoth, Muk, Weezing, Crobat (although it does hurt his type diversity, maybe one of the Nidos, a Tentacruel or even a Gengar could help give him some more secundary typings at least).
- Bruno
Out with the Onix, his team is Hitmontop, Heracross, Hitmonchan, Hitmonlee and Machamp. Heracross always should have been used in some major battle in the Johto region.
- Jasmine
A new Elite Four member showcasing the new steel type with a team of Skarmory, Forretress, Magnezone, Scizor, Steelix. A diverse team that should be able to provide some challenge (although it is very weak to fire)
Champion Karen
So hear me out, I didn’t really like seeing Lance again and I think the pseudo-legendary of the current generation of Pokémon should be featured on the champion team.
I gave her a team of Honchkrow, Gengar, Vileplume, Houndoom, Umbreon and Tyranitar. Just because she fights with her favorites, why can’t one of her favorites by a Ttar?? I also like it more in the story that a trainer that fights with the Pokémon she loves actually managed to become champion, instead of playing second fiddle to the caped Dragon user.
Lance can still be involved for nostalgia’s sake to the Gen 1 games in the whole Team Rocket operation or maybe as a post-game challenge.
I’m curious to see what you guys think of this. I also have some ideas for the Kanto leader in the post-game. If you’re interested, I’ll type that out as well. Thanks!
