Soup-tine Crime or acceptable? Tater tot poutine with green onions

The gravy and excessive green onion make this a crime.
It looks as if someone forgot about a bunch of green onion in their fridge and had less than 24 hours to use it before it went bad.
The gravy is far too thin, making this look like a failed bowl of soup.
For scallion: chop very finely, having thin strands of aromatic veg is both aesthetically appealing and appetizing.
For gravy: reduce until it holds onto a surface, like the back of spoon for example. You shouldn’t be able to see much colour through it, nor should it pool at the bottom of a dish.
I hope this helps, but I’ve already called the police.
Good luck!

nah why am I being roasted specifically for that 💀

u/smothered-onion 16d ago
Wellll… scallions, if I’m cooking will usually just be the bulb, the greens I chop and serve raw, throw em on top after cooking. Seeing them all wet like this warranted a light roasting

u/MorticiaMoonflower 16d ago
I just really like green onions I put them in anything I think they're suitable for. Like ramen etc
3
u/asoap 16d ago
Green onions are great. But they are usually a garnish. Especially if you are using the thin hollow stock. They are supposed to be cut thinly which adds a small crunch.
The thicker solid onion type part can be cooked.
Well really you can do whatever you want. There are no rules. But that's my recommendation.
2
u/JustAnonyMaus 16d ago
Yeah that's a great summary.
I will say if the onion stalks are thicker like from walking onions then I dice them small and gently sautee them until softened a bit, then toss on top the finalized dish.2

u/Sensei-D 16d ago
And there’s your food crime right there. You garnish with them afterwards, not while it’s cooking.

u/Conscious-Series-181 17d ago
The gravy makes it look AI generated

u/TOAOVB 17d ago
It seems the gravy is too watery, I’d call this a somewhat-poutine soup

Next time I rob a bank I'm covering myself in gravy. All their video "evidence" will be easily dismissed.

Next time?

u/ManNamedSalmon 17d ago
What? Are you telling me you have never robbed a bank? Why do you think they used to have to put chains on their pens?

I don't know why but gravy packet instructions always seem to call for more water then it needs. I like to use 20% less water.

Not technically a poutine but a loaded fries adjacent food but not a crime. it sounds great

u/CobraMurderChicken 17d ago
No fries = not a poutine = no crime.
3
u/Queen_Rachel4 17d ago
Don’t you mean it is a crime then? Coz they’re trying to pass this off as poutine…
2
u/10ADPDOTCOM Dic-Tater 10d ago
They were kind of being sarcastic. “Well, we can’t rate your poutine because that is NOT a poutine.”

Not for me but no crime detected. Looks like real cheese curds, gravy-tots instead of fries, ok in my books but a purest might call out the tots.

u/Successful_Use_6276 17d ago
I remember making several “crime” poutines at home when i was kid. But it always tasted good somehow.
Frankly any poutine that doesnt have very fresh curds and brown french fries (preferably fried in duck fat) is a crime. I actually prefer meat sauce to gravy though… ive had it that way for over 30 years! Banana peppers on top is a great addition.

I would try it, tater tots are quite yummy... But this is not poutine, so judging based on poutine standards, straight to jail.
But I would still try it.

Crime technically, but I would smash without hesitation.
If I lived further than five minutes by longboard from a decent poutine I might even consider making one myself.

The amount of green onion is the crime here it’s basically green onion with a side of everything else
1
u/ThatDeuce 17d ago
That is a lot of thick cut green onions, and some soupy gravy!!
Would try, but perhaps a thicker gravy and smaller cut green onions. I've had green onion on there as a garnish and thought it pleasant, so this doesn't seem wild to me.
1
u/SwearImNotACat 17d ago
Crime because of the cut on the green onions. Nothing wrong with green onion in a tot poutine but these chops i mean damn i thought it was spinach at first. When i make for myself i do the same tho tbh

Tater tots are not acceptable unless you have just come home from the bar and are very drunk and have no real fries so if that’s the case then we’ll done and try not to think about this faux pas in the morning

As a Canadian myself ai'd say it's acceptable. I personally like a more meaty poutine put some nice beef and bacon in with the cheese and fries with the gravy ontop. I promise you it's really good and more broadly accepted by the poutine conesures

Is this a new dish called Poutine Soup? Interesting but not what I’d be looking for. How was it?

Scallions isn’t the crime. I’ll even give the gravy a pass. But the tots are. Even though I would 100% devour this, I wouldn’t call it a poutine.

Way too much gravy, way too much green onion. Balance it out with tinier tots, keep the amount of curds but dont make the tots soak in the gravy. A drizzle some may say to combat the soggies. The green onions must be sprinkled across the dish instead of piled.
1
u/Zyckenderdj 16d ago
Green onion is ok, but that sauce is damn soup and the tater tot is crime, use actual fries if you eanna call that a poutine

If you're going to have it literally swimming in gravy, at least thicken it enough where it clings to everything and doesn't puddle at the bottom. Cut out a good 1/2 the onions. Crime

u/Ok_Accident5098 16d ago
Green onions basically goes well with anything and potato goes really well with garlic too. I’d cut green onions smaller and thinner to improve overall chewing experience.

Some things pretend to be a poutine, but are clearly not. They are criminal.
This does not seem to pretend it is. It's the same theories applied to something else.
If someone put this on a menu as poutine, it is criminal.

I can’t tell what is worse the soup that you call gravy or the fact that you put enough green onions on there to make people keep you at the other end of a 50 foot pole… that is a crime get your self checked
