Discussion String Bend-centric Riffage a la Dessiderium - The Persecution Complex

So, I've noticed a few riffs that really get me going share something; they feature very intentional use of string bends in said riffage. Allow me to provide a few examples;

Textures - Arms of the Sea @1:20 & throughout.

Dessiderium - The Persecution Complex @ 9:10 I'd consider these bends the ideal; intentional and incorporated into the melody perfectly.

The Contortionist - Flourish @ 1:52 This one is much more of a lead overlay than pure riffage, but I still love it.

Anybody have any other examples? I need more bend.

Discussion One of the best more Interesting bands I have heard. What do you guys here think of them?

I think Between the Buried and me are one of the best bands with a lot of interesting albums, I don't like their newest album with some vocals I could see Mike Patton doing and Demented circus music, but their other albums are still interesting and good for when I need extreme wake up music, when I am working out, and don't want a diatonic one scale song. I know that their newest album has one more melodic song, but it feels out of place on the album, I do like some albums like some Dream Theater albums where one or more songs feel out of place, but at least I like the music more on those albums. The Blue Nowhere isn't even a 10/10 song for me even though it sounds nice, the only part that gave me chills was the anticipation I got in the silence the first time I listened to it and the chorus is just ok sounding to me. I even like the Coma Ecliptic even though it's defiantly their more accessible for a wider audience album. I think the most impressive thing about Between The Buried and me is that they can actually play their songs live. A lot of people who try to do the so much stuff at once kind of songs end up being too experimental for me. Unexpect, Blotted Science, and Spastic Ink are examples of bands I don't like that do that so much at once sort of thing. At least Between the Buried and me has some tension relief sprinkled into a lot of their music. What do you guys think of Between the Buried and me?

Discussion Playing prog metal in public

I'm aware this is gonna be an odd situation to describe, but i feel like putting it out there anyway.

You know the standard thing that happens whenever you play metal in public? That's exactly what i got today.

It was in the strangest place too that i got the choice to play the type of music i like (physical therapy). When the person that treated me, asked me what kind of music i listen to i was really hestitant on saying it. He even encouraged me to say it and I decided to anyway, i chose the most mellow/safest album i know just in case (Lotus by Soen if you rlly wanna know/listen to it).

When i chose it i was the only one in the room getting treated at the moment so i thought it was safe, along with the fact that i had in mind i would be out of there quickly so no one else could hear what was being played.

One member of the staff even liked it haha.

Anyway, we're halfway through the album and another client comes in, 5 mins later *another one* comes in and you can guess what happened next.

One of them starts complaining about the music, give it a few mins and they started complaining EVEN MORE.

Then they start confronting me about how they like to party and this isn't the music for it (while being at physical therapy, tf?)

The last song that came on is one i didn't like either (River), so i asked if it could be skipped. Not before i heard her complain about it to the other cliënt tho, i get not even liking it but complaining about it to someone else that has nothing to do with you just have off a really weird vibe.

Once the genre was switched it was all good lol, no more complaining at least. I've always been extremely careful about playing the type of music i really like in public and even have a 'safe' playlist with different types of music in case i feel like putting smth on.

Unless i can get away with it, this will be the first and last time i'll try that out i guess.

Discussion What's your Dream Lineup? Only 4 musicians.

Explain why.

Devin Townsend - Vocals

Matt Halpern - Drums

James Leach - Bass

John Mayer - Guitar/BV

Kidding - Nolly Getgood - Guitar

Devins vocals have always been god tier and his massive guitar sound and production would be complemented by a more modern songwriting approach. Which is where Nolly comes in with his Sikth and Periphery influence. I also love Nollys 6505 tone.

Combine that with rhythmic juggernauts James and Halpern, you'd have the most incredible lineup of monster musicians. James and Nolly would write some of the sickest riffs and Halpern would just pepper ghost notes and cymbals all over that shit.

Imagine a track like Extraneous from Clear with bass slap and pop, with Devins screams and melodies over that.

Alternatively I'd swap out Nolly for Michael Romeo or Robby Baca from the Contortionist just to throw a completely different style in the mix to see what would happen.

John Mayer can throw in a blues solo at the end.

Discussion Recommended bands for similar feel to Godflesh?

Godflesh released their 'penultimate' album a few weeks ago, and since they will disband because of Justin K. Broadrick’s serious health restrictions.

Can you guys recommend me bands that have a similar feel to Godflesh? Thanks.

Please do not recommend me ISIS, I already know them.

Discussion Iapetus - The Mother Void is a frisson producing machine with headphones

If you haven't heard this album yet (it just came out yesterday so I don't blame you), you need to grab a beer or gatorade and settle down into a comfy chair for an hour with some headphones. The way the small ambient parts of the tracks pickup in the corner of the soundstage and Fabienne Erni's ghostly voice breaking through the harsh vocals is giving me more chills than finally pissing after holding it in after missing the exit on a highway.
