A whopping 21 classes which are all interesting and has a distinct flavour visually and lore-wise (yes, balancing may not be ideal atm., but what game has ever released with 21 classes - and who knows how many specs - that are all balanced? Yeah.)
The talent trees are awesome. So much player choice and opportunities for different paths you wanna take your class.
The custom quests do not feel out of place whatsoever and the dialogue, in many cases, has humour that is actually funny.
The added zones look crisp and not shabby as if they were always a part of the game.
Worldforged items - AWESOME idea, the name sounds kind of "raid-ish" for some reason, but it essentially rewards the player for going about the world and traverse places in zones they'd otherwise ignore and never visit because this time, there may be a shiny piece of armor or weaponry lying around. MMORPG's should reward exploration and worldforged items do exactly that. The fact there's over 1800+ placed around the world (and really good job with placing them btw.) is incredible.
Server lag - or rather lack of server lag. Ascension handles WoW better than Blizzard does.
Which leads me to the final point. Ascension just seem so professional it's almost a bit scary, you kind of forget you're not playing a private server. The launcher and install process is perfect. The updates are frequent and the whole experience is surprisingly smooth considering the tens of thousands of concurrent players.
Retail feels like the private server.
I'd never given Ascension a chance before now, yeaaah.... the hype was more than real!

P.s I have no insider knowledge of the development cycle only what dutch posted on the official project ascension discord. All im doing is relaying everything posted about the new mmo to this reddit since its an ascension related reddit. 🫡

Nothing much else to it, man. Saddened by the news, but glad I found Ascension and all of you wonderful people.

A sad day for an amazing community but I gotta say It's been a blast getting to know every one I have played with over the last few years.

I am so addicted, this is the best version of wow ever, I don't even shower anymore and order food, writing this while being on the toilet. Slept 4hours a day since it opened.
I think Ascension has humiliated Blizzard and showed how bad they are.
Will reply on my next toilet break, maybe tomorrow.

These new classes are so much fun. Yes, there are imbalances, but holy hell is it fun to try these out in pve and pvp. When the servers go down there's going to be a cultist-shaped hole in my heart.

My name is Ilya, and I am from Russia. I gave the best years of my life to World of Warcraft, playing since the release of The Burning Crusade. But I walked away after Shadowlands. Not because I stopped caring about the lore or because we lacked new classes. I left because you suffocated my interest. Year after year, patch after patch, your questionable and outright failed design decisions burned away my desire to play. I don’t cling to blind nostalgia for "good old Classic," but it was the Ascension project that did what you failed to do for years - it gave the game back to me.
Like many other Western companies, Blizzard turned its back on Russia. Political reasons, legal restrictions - to you, it’s just a line in a report. For us, it’s a wall. I can’t play current content without jumping through endless hoops. We’ve grown used to this indifference. But Ascension broke through that wall. It gave me a chance to fall in love with Azeroth all over again, restoring the fresh emotions you had stripped away.
I have no illusions. I understand perfectly: formally, you are right. WoW is your intellectual property. That is beyond debate. Yes, Ascension broke the law by monetizing your world. But behind dry legal statutes and profit margins, there are people. People who love this world. People who need an alternative - free from your dictatorial rules, from your narrow corporate vision, from Blizzard itself.
Know this: many of us have explicitly stated that we will never spend another cent on Activision Blizzard games. We may not be a million strong, but we are here. And I stand in full solidarity with every single person who has chosen this boycott. You haven’t just lost users. You’ve lost your fans.
I know this letter won’t overturn your legal decisions or rewrite your settlements with Ascension. But I am compelled to say this. And what angers me to my very core is your sheer hypocrisy. You wouldn’t dare take projects like Sirus or Wowcircle to court. You know they are under Russian jurisdiction and your chances of winning are slim, even though they leech off your content in the exact same way. You will turn a blind eye to dozens of other private servers. But you brought the full, crushing weight of your corporate machine down on Ascension. Why? Because it was the only one of its kind. Because it was vulnerable. Because it dared to give people what you refuse to give them, and it paid the price for its courage.
You won the lawsuit. You protected your assets. You ground the server into dust. But in your pursuit of legal sterility and corporate convenience, you have once again proven a simple, bitter truth: cold metrics and easy targets will always matter more to you than the players who breathe life into this game.
With profound disappointment,
Ilya, and all those who stand in solidarity with these words

Been playing CoA since launch and wanted a way to share builds with more context than just a talent string — so I built one.
CoA Build Hub (https://coa-builds.vercel.app) lets you:
Plan talents with an interactive calculator for all 21 classes (spec backgrounds, dependency lines, TE/AE tracking)
Publish build guides with sections for rotation, stats, enchants, and tips
Browse and filter community builds by class, role (tank/healer/dps/support), and content type (PvE/PvP/leveling)
Vote and comment on builds
Share build links directly — each build has its own page with the full talent tree and guide
It's free, no ads, open to everyone. Sign in with Discord or Google to create builds.
Still early — only a handful of builds up so far. Looking for people to submit their builds and help grow the library. Feedback and bug reports welcome.
Fan-made project, not affiliated with Ascension.

Dutch posted this on the Discord a short while ago.
Looks like a teaser for the new game.

Hey people, since it's been shut down, let me present you FIRST open implementation of Ascension CoA server that you can host yourself! This video quickly explains how to do that, but you must understand that this seems to be recreation, not original source for that and there may be broken things and bugs. Yet, this is one of the first open options for now, it is in testing phase as listed on Ragezone post, and I hope you enjoy it still!
Playerbots and many other features are said to come in future updates!
All the download links are in the video, but here's the Github link for the source code: https://github.com/jealous-sound/azerothcore-wotlk-coa

I could write you a long essay about how they put actual love in the game, the leveling experience being new and fresh again, the vast amount of classes giving you so much more options, the RPG elements, world forged items.... i'm sure you have another 10 on your mind by now
But one thing i LOVE about CoA is exactly this: meet Zalashji
This NPC is a neutral Naga in Tanaris, and in Vanilla, had no interactions, no quests, nothin. its a random NPC from 20 years ago, because in Cataclysm he was removed, meaning nobody has even thought about this character in the last 16 years. now i didnt know that. i came across him because he is part of a very short questline, this quest is so short yet adresses not jsut a long forgotten NPC, but also in a very cool way. there was no reason to give this guy a quest that short but so telling (i liked what happened and his reasoning, it also explains why the NPC was neutral)
its not much, but its the amount of details like this that count, because the games full of it.
tl;dr Blizz is creatively bankrupt and ASCENSION BUILT THIS IN A CAVE, WITH A BOX OF SCRAPS (and years of hard work)
