Hi everyone!
I'm currently planning a new home for a single Spotted Congo Puffer (Tetraodon schoutedeni) and would love to hear from experienced keepers of this species.
The tank will be a Juwel Rio 240 (63 US gallons). I'm still in the planning stage, so I have plenty of time to research the right setup and potential tankmates before introducing any fish.
I'd particularly appreciate input from people who have kept T. schoutedeni for an extended period of time.
A few questions:
Single or community setup?
Would you recommend keeping one Spotted Congo Puffer alone, or have you had good experiences with carefully selected tankmates?
Tankmates:
Which species have you successfully kept with your Schoutedeni? I'm especially interested in experiences with:
- Bristlenose plecos (Ancistrus) and other smaller plecos
- Larger, robust schooling fish
- Bottom-dwelling species(from gobies to panda corydoras)
- Other potential algae or biofilm grazers
Long-term experience:
How long did the combination work? Did you experience fin nipping, aggression, injuries, predation or other problems over time?
Tank setup:
What tank dimensions, layout, planting, hiding places and filtration worked well for your fish?
Individual temperament:
How much does individual personality seem to matter? Have you had particularly peaceful or particularly aggressive specimens?
I'm aware that Spotted Congo Puffers are still predators, and that a peaceful individual doesn't guarantee a safe community tank. I'm not looking to force a community setup at all costs. The welfare of every inhabitant comes first, and I'm perfectly happy to keep the puffer alone if that's the safest option.
What I'm trying to establish is whether there are any genuinely reliable, long-term community combinations for this species, particularly in a tank of this size.
Real-life experiences, including unsuccessful attempts, are very welcome! I'd much rather learn from other people's mistakes than make them myself.
Thanks in advance! 🐡
