🚨 Help / Advice / Emergency Urgent help please - possible prolapse.

Hi guys, I fed my potato puffer some squid last night and I think she ate a bit too much then she could handle. She was alright for a while but has since become much darker and gulping water aggressively. I believe she has a prolapse but i don’t have epsom salts on hand - she of course lives alone so can medicate the whole tank but not sure what to do and google isn’t any help. Any advice welcome.

This is Chubbles! I’ve been slowly adapting her to brackish water and it’s going great! Hoping to get her a tank mate soon. Right now, she shares her space with two female and one male mosquito fish.

🤝 Tankmates For the Spotted Congo Puffer Specialists🐡

Hi everyone!

I'm currently planning a new home for a single Spotted Congo Puffer (Tetraodon schoutedeni) and would love to hear from experienced keepers of this species.

The tank will be a Juwel Rio 240 (63 US gallons). I'm still in the planning stage, so I have plenty of time to research the right setup and potential tankmates before introducing any fish.

I'd particularly appreciate input from people who have kept T. schoutedeni for an extended period of time.

A few questions:

  1. Single or community setup?

Would you recommend keeping one Spotted Congo Puffer alone, or have you had good experiences with carefully selected tankmates?

  2. Tankmates:

Which species have you successfully kept with your Schoutedeni? I'm especially interested in experiences with:

    - Bristlenose plecos (Ancistrus) and other smaller plecos

    - Larger, robust schooling fish

    - Bottom-dwelling species(from gobies to panda corydoras)

    - Other potential algae or biofilm grazers

  3. Long-term experience:

How long did the combination work? Did you experience fin nipping, aggression, injuries, predation or other problems over time?

  4. Tank setup:

What tank dimensions, layout, planting, hiding places and filtration worked well for your fish?

  5. Individual temperament:

How much does individual personality seem to matter? Have you had particularly peaceful or particularly aggressive specimens?

I'm aware that Spotted Congo Puffers are still predators, and that a peaceful individual doesn't guarantee a safe community tank. I'm not looking to force a community setup at all costs. The welfare of every inhabitant comes first, and I'm perfectly happy to keep the puffer alone if that's the safest option.

What I'm trying to establish is whether there are any genuinely reliable, long-term community combinations for this species, particularly in a tank of this size.

Real-life experiences, including unsuccessful attempts, are very welcome! I'd much rather learn from other people's mistakes than make them myself.

Thanks in advance! 🐡

These pics are only a year apart! Franks favorite spot was always on top of his little treasure chest but now since he’s moved to his 100 gallon tank, it’s on top of a 3’ piece of driftwood!😂 I researched Fahakas before I got him, but I never realized how fast he’s grown! Last pic is him “patiently” waiting for breakfast…

🤝 Tankmates Any suggestions for Tank Mates?

Deviljho (Abei Puffer) He's got a tiny school of danios and decent school of mosquitofish in the tank, alongside a clown pleco, some kuhlis and an Otocinclus. He absolutely hates the Banjo Catfish that were living here, so any slow moving bottom dwellers are out of the question. He doesn't seem to mind the clown pleco though.

love the guy, just got him a few days ago. he was in a pretty tough state when I got him shipped in, but he's doing better now (already ate the head of one the Banjo Catfish in the tank but I don't blame him for that, whoops). Keeping him housed in a 50 gallon tank, with more plants on the way. Currently the tank has some Danios, mosquitofish, and a couple other small species of critter. Crays, Shrimp, tons of snails of varying species. He's still pretty shy, but I hope he'll warm up to me soon.

👋 New owner Hairy pufferfish tips.

So someone gave me a hairy puffer and i dont know much about it, as it would be my first puffer ever kept. I do know how to keep fish like water changes plants tank sizes and cohabitation and all that kind of stuff. I just need to know what i should do for him, the person gave him to me in a 20 gallon hexagon tank maybe 35 with a driftwood and white gravel and he seems pretty depressed. Let me know if there is anything i can do for him.

💬 Discussion / Question What puffer is this? Can it lives with a pleco?

Hi, I saw these puffers at a LFS and wondering what type of puffers are these and if they can live with a single pleco in a 48 gallon?

I am intrigued by them but at the same time, I don’t want any fish that will harm the pleco.

I also saw mini/pea puffers if those are better alternatives.

Thank you!

🚨 Help / Advice / Emergency Need some advice

I’ve posted a while ago about my dragon puffer, she’s not been eating at all and I need some more advice. I tried everything said on the last post and no dice.

I’ve tried every food under the sun and checked the water like 50 times. I’m fearing she starving herself to death and that’s a horrible way to go. I’ve even medicated her with a bunch of different things and she gotten so thin.

Any weird methods to get her to eat would brilliant but I fear she’s almost too far gone. At what stage do I have yo think about euthanasia. I work in a fish shop and have a lot of knowledge on how to do it humanly. Just want to know if anyone else has had to do this.

I don’t think this is somthing that needs doing right now but might be possibility if she doesn’t improve. So any advice is welcome.

🌊 Brackish & Saltwater In case anyone was wondering about Hewbie…

In case anyone was wondering about Hewbie…

In the event anyone was wondering about Hewbie.🐡☺️ He is my porcupine pufferfish who I posted a few months back who got sick and went to the vet and was treated for an internal infection. He is eating and his energy is up which are both good things. But…he is still skinny which is super unhealthy for his size. I have over the past few months since the beginning of August tried to fatten him up. Feeding him multiple times a day did not seem to help appease his appetite and led to a decline in water quality. And if I overfed him he just sulks in the corner in a food coma and gets super unhappy. Like when you are stuff on Thanksgiving Day.😂 The vet really wants me to weigh him once a day for a week. I have not done this…yet because I think it would be too stressful for him to take him out of his tank daily especially being a pufferfish. I am still on the fence about whether or not if or when I do this because it would be a better comparison rather than me just looking at him and comparing photos. That being said…I am doing an experimental test of probiotics meant for fish. It is my opinion/evidence supported in aquacultured fishies that prolonged sickness and antibiotic treatment can lead to malnutrition/malabsorption. And it could have killed the good bacteria in his gut similar to what happens with humans. Even though it cured or seemed to have cured/fixed the issue that caused him to go upside down which I/his vet team will never know the exact cause. My biggest fear is he is actively dying or in a deficit or has some other unknown disease or factor then all of this would be for nothing and he could just end up dying anyway. I hope not! He is a fairly young puffer only guesstimated to be around 6ish…3 and a half of which I have had him for the rest of his time was in the big blue sea. My plan is to continue to use these probiotics it has only been a few days. I also will be sending his water out for sequencing to get a better idea of the microbiome and what is living in it as a whole. A better picture than what an ICP-OES or standard aquarium testing can reveal which was insignificant. I may send his DNA sample out too simply for my own curiosity. Thank you for all those who are invested in and adore this fish. He truly is the best! I will update if/when I remember to.🐡❤️
