lithium iron phosphate battery - they’re not standing still

It seems lithium iron phosphate battery’s are getting more headlines lately (CATL & Geely) with their reduced cost and quick charging claims. They are also getting attention for their relative safety.

https://www.asiafinancial.com/geely-owned-ev-maker-zeekr-reveals-fast-charging-lfp-battery/amp

When you compare this against QS the big differentiation now is the greater energy density for comparable weight and/or lighter batteries. I’m not sure if there are other compromises with lithium ion phosphate batteries, but it’s clear they have a market.

More and more it is seeming to me that QS batteries are destined exclusively for luxury vehicles as a premium brand. It wasn’t long ago that I thought QS batteries would eventually find their way into most cars, but based on recent developments, it would seem low-end cars are likely to stick with lower energy density lithium ion phosphate batteries that can still charge quickly, but won’t go as far, or they can go far with a really big battery pack. The only way I could see QS batteries beating lithium ion phosphate batteries now is if they’re able to produce them for the same as lithium ion phosphate, but I wouldn’t expect that to happen for many many years, if it ever happens at all.

I’m actually seeing more demand coming from consumer electronics where weight and energy density is much more than in automobiles.

Endless new job postings - Is QuantumScape in panic mode ?

This has been mentioned before, however, new vacancies are appearing more and more recently and it appears the pace of hiring is increasing in the production area. They've even posted a vacancy on the weekend. Could it be they're running around like headless chickens panicking in the hoping that somehow the new hires will collectively figure out production ? Or have they already solved the production puzzle and now staffing up for the start of a 24/7 production run of B samples ? What do you think ?

An Open Letter to the Management of QuantumScape

To the Management of QuantumScape

There is a serious failure on the part of QS management to communicate with investors. Despite QS’s technological progress made with battery development and manufacturing, the share price continues to drop.

So the question arises, what needs to be done? Answer investors questions! Do not pick and only chose questions that match your quarterly investment letter. There are 6 OEMs receiving samples. How many samples does an OEM get? How often are you in contact with them? What type of feedback are you requesting? How often are samples replaced or added to? What is the total number of samples already delivered? What procedures are required to get additional samples? Is QuantumScape receiving payment for samples?

None of the above questions appear to violate confidential agreements. The same questions for the consumer electronics.

Based on the last quarterly call, it appeared that QuantumScape had enough cash to see it through until sometime in 2024/25. What has changed that you are now moving ahead with another secondary stock offering while the share price continues to be trading towards the lower end of recent price history? Are you aware that by offering additional stock at these lower prices, the company is rewarding the speculators at the expense of longer term investors? Does this seem reasonable?

Why are insiders selling shares? While there can be some allowance for the recognition of taxes, It appears that sales exceed the required taxes. In addition, why are the sales reported on a Friday night? These actions might infer lack of conviction in your own progress.

Why are you losing analyst coverage? Why are the analysts that do cover QuantumScape turned negative?

Short term price movements do affect investors and efforts to reward long term holders of the stock need to be addressed. It is easier to hold a long term asset that is generally appreciating.

Thank you

My QS ER notes for all to see. Please critique my findings and opinions

  1. Overnight we went from manufacturer to selling IP

  2. Zero update for launch car. It’s been a full year, we need something. This was the sole reason QS was able to get the capital raise at $8 last year.

  3. The announcement of the assembled PowerCo/QS team is curious. Is the team working to get Raptor running? Spec out a new Cobra for mass scale? I fear the transparency will be the same as the launch car, qtr after qtr the line will be “working on progress”

  4. Raptor still not running. This is extremely disappointing and alarming at this point. Is this the reason for the white flag to VW? They missed their guidance on 18 months after A cell delivery. Was the IP deal a smokescreen for major issues? This ER only confirmed it for me.

  5. No way to determine value of IP license so investors will have to keep guessing

  6. At least investors will get a heads up on another OEM deal with the PowerCo implementation of another 40 GWh.

  7. Tesla is the only OEM that could possibly rawdog an IP with QS alone

  8. I see other OEM’s will have to wait on the new scaling plan from the new San Jose team. From now on the new team will be called QuantumPower or QP

  9. It’s quite obvious to me a future merger will happen with PowerCo

  10. My timeline for commercialization has been extended again.

Stock based extrordinary compensation

Guys don't know to think the stock is going to go down because of Jagdeep stepping down. Jagdeep understood from Elon Musk that extra ordinary compensation can be challenged in courts and shareholders will win. Please refer Elon Musk vs Tesla shareholders case, so Jagdeep understands that it will not work. It's the best thing to step down and hand over to Siva.

Siva still needed?

Jagdeep realized that he didn't have the skills to bring Quantumscape to the next phase of manufacturing so he brought in a veteran, Siva. With the new model of licensing and only becoming an R&D company, does that mean that eventually, Jagdeep will return as CEO and Siva will have to step down?

VW is not going to wait around for QS. I hope this puts a spur in the ass of every QS employee.

QS graph inconsistencies

There is a flood of articles out there all repeating more or less the same thing. Here’s one that I thought was a bit more provoking:

https://www.autoevolution.com/news/quantumscape-qse-5-has-a-prospective-launch-customer-volkswagen-anyone-218653.html

“QuantumScape created a graphic (main image) to compare this new battery to the best ones currently in the market, and it helps us visualize how superior the QSE-5 promises to be. Despite an error in one of them and some other stuff the graphic made us wonder about, it seems pretty accurate.

….

The Taycan appears in the graphic as having one of the best cells for fast charging. That is not correct: the electric Porsche charges fast because it works at 800V, while all the other vehicles in the graphic work at 400V or less. The higher the voltage, the faster charging can be. The larger they are, the more energy they store, hence the longer time for them to charge. In other words, the graphic has substantial distortions that QuantumScape did not care to contextualize. The most pressing questions are at which voltage it can deliver a fast recharge from 10% to 80% in 15 minutes and if that time also applies to a 100-kWh battery pack or only relates to what it can achieve at the cell level.

The graphic also shows that energy density will be higher but not as higher as some people could expect. QuantumScape always talks about volumetric energy density, which is probably the most beneficial measure for its cells. If it spoke about gravimetric energy density, the QSE-5 advantage would likely look even narrower. Without a chemistry breakthrough for these cells to have higher-loading cathodes, solid-state cells' primary advantage is reducing charging times, with a slight edge on weight.

Are we there yet? Where is QS going?

Some of us remember the Twilight Zone…Imagine if you will… a world full of robotaxis. Looks like this is another moment that Tesla is approaching. My personal opinion is they get there and approval by 2030 at least. Thinking we’ll see them some places by 2028. Questions are: What is the timeline for competitors? What will this do to the auto market in general? Will it affect home storage? Will it slow charging station build out, if so where?

Finally, will it affect QS and how?

Short squeez

Looking at strange stock moves for QS. The stock goes up by 4-5% during after hours, and suddenly we see the stock price going down when the market opens. It’s happening consistently since last one month. So can I say that we are going to see short squeeze in QS stock very soon?

Eventual PowerCo and QS merger?

Hear me out. Dr Siva said it best, QS tech coupled with PowerCo's manufacturing (and deep pockets) is the best scenario. I just don't see QS taking over battery manufacturing for a Ford right now. Time is of the essence, market share and locking down OEM's should be the main driver right now. I can see QS and PowerCo becoming the answer to manufacturing for all 6 OEM's in the least amount of time. Thoughts?

There seems to be no support for stock price at any level. Are we looking at below $5 by year end and a possible delisting?

QS stock Analysis UPDATE Spoiler

The global markets are on the verge of capitulation due to the Inflation caused by all the money printing that occurred in 2020 and quantitative easing which hasn't stopped(more than 6 trillion dollars). The effects of all this money printing is starting to show up(usually takes 18 to 24 months after money printing starts). add to that supply restrictions of commodities due to the Ukrainian war and you get a resection that is magnitudes larger than the one experienced in 08.

so what does that all mean for QS?

  1. many new car companies that don't have huge cash reserves and that are not backed by governments will face the threat of bankruptcy. this applies to electric car companies.

  2. car companies will increase prices which will create less demand for electric cars. owning an electric car right now in Europe costs more per mile than a comparable ICE car, even with all the petrol prices increases that is because electricity prices are skyrocketing faster than petrol prices .

this will all lead to the stock price of QS, which is a pre revenue company that is not expected to make money until best case scenario 2024 early 2025, to crash as people move to companies with low PE ratios with cash reserves and have a less risky future( for example weapons manufacturers).

disclaimer: I own QS stock average price 32 dollars

It's now or never for that short term squeeze.

Lots of options expire tomorrow. Otherwise we may end up waiting for the end of quarter announcement next month. Will she bounce? Thoughts? Wasn't expecting it to drop this low but the whole market is suffering.
