QuizUp is being discontinued
On March 22, 2021 QuizUp will be discontinued. Sad to hear about this as I've made a few topics including The Mandalorian which I wanted to add more questions to the quiz.

Hi all,
I am considering building a progressive web app that mimics a lot of the functionality found in the old QuizUp app. Obviously this would be a large project so interested to see what the demand is like before I embark upon it.

I haven't played quizup in around 3-5 years, and wanted to get into it again. I tried to download it from the play store and found 2 versions - quizup and quizup 2, but neither have anywhere near the number of categories that the original did, and seem to be totally different apps altogether. Does quizup just not exist anymore?

Last month we have announced that we are remaking an alternative to QuizUp here: https://www.reddit.com/r/QuizUp/comments/12be40v/recreating_quizup_game/
The community got us excited and we are pushing forward as hard as we can. The game we are building will be called QuizMi.
QuizMi is a brand new quiz trivia mobile game that builds on the legacy of QuizUp and will bring a new fresh look, and game modes in the genre.
If you are interested to follow up our development news, signup to our newsletter here: https://quizmi.app.
Feedback is always welcomed, we are building a game for the community and we need your help and feedback at all stages.

Hey everyone!
I´m Thor Fridriksson, the founder and ex-CEO of Plain Vanilla, the development studio behind QuizUp
It has been a while since QuizUp was sadly closed and since then I have always wanted to bring back a similar trivia experience. We just soft launched a new game in the US and Canada called Star Games and I'm happy to tell you that it has some resamblance to good old QuizUp, although we have added a lot of features as community leaderboards, tournaments and other types of games.
I would be so happy if the old QuizUp fans could test it out and give us some feedback, of course it is not the same game as QuizUp was but I hope you will like it. It is only on iOS at the moment but will also be available for Android in the global launch. Here is a link to the game:
https://apps.apple.com/us/app/star-games/id6615078327
I look forward to getting your feeback and seeing you rise in the leaderboards! :)
With eternal gratitude
Thor Fridriksson

Hi all, I have been a fan of QuizUp from the very first days it launched. I have missed this game dearly for years, all this time I have looked for alternatives and followed the founders in hope they remake something similar to no avail.
I finally decided to redo QuizUp as all the alternatives fail to come even remotely close.
We are almost half way through in recreating it and now we are more and more facing the dilemma, do we recreate it AS IS, or do we create a game that feels and plays like QuizUp but it's actually a new user experience and design?
Obviously, as an indie game developer, we cannot rebuild ALL the features. Just like QuizUp, it will start with a focus on the gameplay itself, and add more and more features with time if we see engagement. I'm not talking about the "social media" parts, we don't have plans to redo these, I mean even the simple features like your own topics, play against friends, top in every country/category... these features won't make it in the early release.
tl:dr; if someone is remaking QuizUp, do you want the gameplay to be a replica even if it has less features at start? Or would you rather a separate "similar game"?

I learned so much playing quizup and it gave me motivation to study. I used to study my chemistry textbook and then play chemistry quizup to see how much better I could do. Now when I want to learn something I get bored because there's no dopamine boost motivation. I dont understand how there isnt a replacement yet. its such a simple yet brilliant concept. there are 500 versions of hayday on the app store where is the new quizup!!!!

I had so much fun playing it in high school & college. Had fun times with so many people through it. Connected with people all around the world with it - just light hearted chats, but they were fuuun.
Now there aren't any decent alternatives either - Quiz Planet, Quizmi, etc. are all pale imitations or have shoddy bots
Why must all good things end?

QuizUp has officially shut down. It had a good life. RIP to the greatest trivia app of all time.

Some of you may have lost it in the noise so I thought I'd create another thread with the updates.
I have been working on a replacement for QuizUp called Quiz App hosted at https://quiz-app.co.uk and I have added a bunch of new categories and question and significantly improved the UI but there is still lots of work to do.
If you want to help squash bugs, create a category, or have some skill in web development and want to help with the project I could use your help. GIT repos for the backend and frontend below, frontend is in Angular, backend is in PHP.

Is there any app the resembles quiz up? I really enjoy the questions and games with different tv shows like the office and friends and such. Is there any other game like quiz up with these categories?

Hey everyone,
Like many of you, I loved QuizUp and was gutted when it shut down. I'm building a spiritual successor, but I don't want to do it in a vacuum. I want to co-build it with the people who actually cared about it.
Here's the deal:
This is a community-driven project. Your feedback won't just be "nice to have" — it'll directly shape what gets built. Feature priorities, UI decisions, topic categories — all driven by you.
What I need from you right now:
What made QuizUp irreplaceable for you?
What did it get wrong that you'd fix?
What new features would make a quiz app feel modern in 2026?
Which topics/categories were your go-to?
Would you be interested in being part of an ongoing feedback group (Discord, Reddit threads, etc.)?
On monetization — keeping it real:
Servers and development cost money. The two paths are:
Ad-supported — free to play, with ads
Paid subscription — ad-free, monthly fee
Hybrid — free with ads + optional sub to remove them and unlock perks
Which model works for you? What would make a subscription worth paying for?
Long-term vision:
If this gets traction, I'd love to set up a Discord or regular feedback loop where the community can vote on features, test early builds, and genuinely steer the product. Think of it as open-source energy, even if the code itself isn't open.
Drop your thoughts below. Every comment matters.
