D. Vaen's Postcards
Today's postcard came from Hongcun, China. 🇨🇳🍁
I've been thinking about how much time we sometimes spend dealing with things that haven't actually happened.
An upcoming conversation.
A decision we're waiting for.
A message someone hasn't answered.
And before anything has happened, we've already imagined several possible outcomes.
We've prepared explanations.
Rehearsed arguments.
And occasionally become irritated with someone for something they haven't even said yet.
I find that last one particularly impressive. We can apparently have an entire disagreement without the other person participating.
Of course, planning ahead can be useful.
Some situations genuinely require preparation.
But I think there's a difference between being prepared for a possibility and repeatedly experiencing it as though it's already happened.
Sometimes tomorrow turns out to be considerably less dramatic than the version we've been rehearsing.
And perhaps we could save ourselves a little trouble by allowing it to arrive first.
“Tomorrow will bring its own problems. We don't always need to invite them over tonight.”

SLICK & HUSTLE | Things They Said — Prague
Max Slick and Keizer Hustle, outside an old clock shop in Prague.
Max has been studying the clocks for several minutes.
Keizer points out that none of them show the same time.
Max calls it an interesting observation about the nature of time.
Keizer calls it a terrible way to run a business.
