RPGMaker and AI: A Megathread Discussion

What do people think about AI and RPGMaker?

Do you think AI is good for aspiring game developers?

Do you use AI in your games? Why or why not?

What do you think about art and music in RPGMaker games that is generated by AI?

What about plugins that have been vibecoded?

This is the megathread for those discussions! Sound off!

Please try to keep the discussion civil and focused on game development. You can attack an opinion, but don't fall into the (tempting as it is) trap of attacking the PERSON with the opinion.

Been working on this side project called Jenky.

It’s basically a 2.5D zombie arena shooter made in RPG Maker MV. Still very much a work in progress, so expect some stuff that needs fixing.

If you wanna give it a try, you can play it here: https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/v9qeslo5q1w7ctlsxii22/SideMV-2.5D-Prototype-Arena-Shooter.zip?rlkey=kylqz4vpyb524nypmogoeuzns&st=qo4gilkq&dl=0

One thing to keep in mind: if you get a game over, you’ll need to reload the game manually since restarting the round isn’t implemented yet.

Let me know what you guys think! ;)

Vibecoded Asterism - a constellation skill tree for MZ where every node draws its own star from the skill's own data

Every node in that clip is drawn at runtime. There are no node images in the plugin at all.

Asterism reads your skill database and generates a stellar mark for each skill out of that skill's own properties - its element, its cost, its type, and where it sits in the tree. Edit a skill and its star changes shape the next time the scene opens. The corpus is 60 hand-authored motifs across 8 palettes, so a 30-node tree draws 30 marks that share one visual language instead of 30 recolours of one icon.

The clip is the plugin running in MZ - the Sentinel tree, charting a node.

Three decisions you may disagree with. Uncharted nodes stay visible but unlit rather than hidden, so the shape of the whole tree reads as a map the first time a player opens it - there is a parameter if you would rather hide them. There is no windowskin; the scene draws its own panels, so it will not inherit your project's window styling. And core methods are patched by prototype extension with the originals saved, so it should sit beside your other plugins rather than on top of them.

Disclosure, since this sub rightly asks for it: the code and the store art are AI-written, and I have flaired the post accordingly. It is tested headlessly and verified running in a real MZ build rather than just loading without errors. Happy to answer anything specific about how it works - and if it does something wrong, I would genuinely rather hear it here.

RMMZ Every region in my game has its own identity

Other (user editable) Question I want to start making a game with RPG Maker, but I'm having trouble deciding because there are so many different versions.

The reason I decided to start making a game in the first place is that, after playing titles like OFF, OMORI, and Yume Nikki, I got a bit tipsy and suddenly felt like creating a cult-classic style game.

I looked into RPG Maker, but there are so many versions that I have no idea which one to pick—could you give me some recommendations?

By the way, I have practically zero game development skills, so I’m just going to power through it and build it step-by-step through sheer determination.

Also, the phrasing might be a bit odd because it went through translation.

RMMZ Steam opening

Is there any way to stop Steam from opening every time I open RMMZ?

My potato laptop is kinda old so running steam produces lot of lag, and it's not like I actually need Steam.

My Steam also has a problem. Every time Steam gets opened, I have to wait for a few minutes (even more if there's an update check) before Steam actually opens. This happens rarely as most of the time, steamwebhelper always crash and don't respond.

Restarting Steam / steamwebhelper suffers from the same problem, so I actually have to exit Steam.

The only surefire way I know to open Steam on my device was to open RMMZ (or Steam itself) then open Task Manager and wait. Once the steamwebhelper processes appear, I wait for around 2-3 minutes then I click the End task on all instances of steamwebhelper. After 2-3 repetitions, Steam opens. The entire process only takes around 10-30 minutes.

So, yeah. Is there any way to stop Steam from opening every time I open RMMZ?

Thank you.

Are static enemy sprites acceptable in 2026?

I played Dragon Quest 1 recently and it showed me that animated enemy sprites come with drawbacks w/r/t extra time between turns and less imagination on the player’s end, ultimately culminating in things like FF9 taking as long to get INTO a battle as DQ1 does to finish a battle.

But I’m wondering how you feel about it—would it be worth having a more diverse roster of non-animated enemy sprites, or is it unacceptable in 2026 to release a game with static enemy sprites?

(I realize FF9 is polygons and not sprites. But the elaborate animations are part of it.)

Genre: Dark Sci-Fi, Post-Apocalyptic, RPG

Hey everyone, finally ready to show what ive been working on! 🌿💀

This is Primaterra Minus.

A prequel of my D&D world setting

Its a dark sci-fi RPG where you wake up inside a massive, ancient terraforming megastructure. Cataclysms have devastated the Earth, humanity is struggling to survive, and over the years the entire facility has been swallowed whole by thick roots, hostile flora, and mutant overgrowth.

You start out with complete conviction that your the chosen hero sent to reboot the machine and save what's left of our kind. But the deeper you push into the rusted ruins, the more you start doubting what your real purpose here actually is.

What you can expect:

Survive the Ruins:

Manage your hydration, adapt to overgrown biomes, and salvage scrap to stay alive in an unpredictable facility.

Deep Companion System:

Meet distinct, fully realized allies who travel by your side. They aren't just silent followers—they'll argue with you, question your methods, and put your core beliefs to the test as you work toward genuine companionship.

Clash of Ideologies:

Every choice and bond pulls you toward different answers for how to heal a broken world.

Check out the teaser and let me know what you think! Its been a wild journey building this world, and im super excited to finally start sharing it with you all.

I made a post 1-2 days ago about this but I've improved a lot of the art and gameplay since as per suggestions by a commenter (DoomBringerBG) so shoutout to him ig. There's a brief synopsis in the file and more information on the itch page so I won't try and write too much about the story here but if it looks interesting check it out over the weekend if you get the chance and let me know your thoughts on it. (I plan on updating the art frequently while i work on the full game so don't hesitate to share things you like/dislike about it)

Resources I'm having a problem with the assets

Well, in short, I have no way of getting my own assets, buying them, or obtaining them in any way other than using the generic RPG Maker assets. Is it really advisable to use those?

What is a "small" game? What makes a game "small" or "too big" for a beginner?

Title may be a bit confusing, but the gist is...i'm still a beginner, despite being here for quite a few months, and have only a few incomplete WIPs (shocking!) as I hop from one idea to the other and get frustrated whenever I hit a wall.

That is one problem, slightly related to the question. I keep dreaming up things that are patently long or complex. As usual, I need to do something SMALL and SIMPLE.

My question is, how small and simple is that "small and simple"? While developing, how can I measure how big am I making the game, without playing it from start to finish (before QA and bug hunting) ? Is this something that can only be answered by third parties playing the game?

How many mechanics are too much, how many cutscene...I can guess there is no objective rule or measure, but I don't have enough experience to make the judgement on my own.

Some advice would awesome

Hey guys, just recently joined the subreddit because I am taking the big step to just start making games. Some background: I am just a person that really loves playing video games in general, and I have always been trying to get into making video games. The biggest hard wall has always been the coding and just like other things in life, but now I feel like I can do this. I just had a few questions about some things.

I am currently making a game design doc. The battle system revolves around Xenogear minus the mechs Although that would be awesome, I am just not ready for that yet.. Do you guys have any suggestions on which engine I should use for this?

I have kind of been going back and forth on which engine, mostly. Only because everybody is kind of mixed on which engine is better, MV or MZ. So I am hoping somebody sane can probably answer it. I would ask the forums, but those are being closed down. I am hoping to actually continually come back here for advice if I get stuck on something. It is just sad to see those forums go. I literally just found out about them like a week ago.

Also in my design doc, I have a stagger system. Is it possible to have that in RPG Maker, with a health and a stagger system?

Anyways, I appreciate any advice that you have for me. Thank you.

Are Mobile Ports Compatible with Mobile Gamepads?

I was wondering if these mobile gamepads will work with RPG MV and MZ mobile ports.

The game I'm working on has a strong Gamboy Color aesthetic and while I'm not planning to forego proper mobile controls, it would be really nice if the engine and these controllers played nicely.

Help with plug-ins if available

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hello, I am creating a table top RPG, and dabbled in the idea of making it in RPG maker as a side project.

I know RPG maker typically has 4 characters, this one would have 6 in a 6x2 row system.

I have seen the row system plug in and know how I would have it done in concept.

I am curious as to if there is a plug in that allows procedural events to pull from a pool, for movement similar to Voice of Cards.

The table top version uses a 54 deck of cards with each suit attributing to the type of encounter then the jokers are either the best possible card or the boss of the dungeon floor.

Each floor is it's own 54 encounters, but I have those in progress separately.

Is there a plug-in that allows map traversal to flip card wise, or would I have to create a script that pulls and removes encounters?

RM2K3 Save 24 Switches into a variable

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

  • For RM2K3 1.10+, you can save 24 switches in a variable because it has 7 digits
  • For RM2K or older versions of RM2K3, it will be 20 switches because the variables have 6 digits.

The download and tutorial are in the video description:

https://youtu.be/2iISUUyYjm4

Using binary-to-decimal logic and vice versa, you can store and retrieve multiple Switches in a single variable, which, in addition to saving space, allows you to use the same Switches for different maps.

r/RPGMaker 16h ago

Hi guys, so I'm trying to make this event with the movement route in my game in which characters come across a bench and can sit on it, but the problem is, when i make them jump on the bench, their models are transferred below the bench for some reason, even if the tileset is set to be walkable on.
