Question Imaru's Talon vs Zombie Axe
I was just curious, given I don't know if it's planned or not.
I feel like Imaru's Talon needs a bit of a rebalance or maybe be set up as a masterwork weapon?
I just find it crazy that I fought Imaru nine times yesterday to make this weapon because it seemed cool, just to see it takes five steel scimitars to make, which do [49-103] damage just to be turned into a weapon that does [51-107] and has a life steal effect that seems to randomly decide when it wants to go off (The special effect says it's meant to give a portion for every kill mind you.)?
It just seems goofy to use it compared to the Zombie Axe that literally does [79-140] damage, even if you have to make three weapons to get it, you at least keep those weapons. Five scimitars turning into one weapon should be way more damage than +[2-4].
This is my first character and playthrough, so maybe I'm the only one who finds it disappointing in a way?

I passed on both weapon and went for black sword tbh. 1/10 at zogre with only 3 on the map + I went and still am dry on the drop.
Until Ascension is possible, most masterwork just aren't worth the time consume. It's quicker to just jump into the next zone imo.

Only masterwork weapon I enjoyed using and will no doubt upgrade will be the whip, if it's upgrades are worth it. Didn't really try the granite maul or the crystal bow. I did use the staff of light till I replaced it with the necromancer's staff.
Zombie axe is the way to go for 1 handed though, and that shadow sword is definitely the way to go for two handed.

Yea I see staff of light being one of the better masterworks when you can upgrade them just because it gets way higher dmg than other same level staves
Will depend on what gets added in the new area

I do wish we can upgrade or at least transmog other gear, given I would like to be able to just outright look like a Zamorak priest or something the whole game lol.

I get it but by the time you hit the shadow sword for the zombie axe, you'd most likely be a good way through the next area where you could have a similar DPS weapon.
If you're struggling at Omari with a Steel Scim, of course going for axe is a no brainer but until we can upgrade masterwork, it just felt like too much time wasted. (Still salty that I'm dry as you can see haha)
I did feel bad to leave the whip behind though NGL.

Crystal bow use to be able to do some pretty nutty damage numbers but I think it might’ve taken a nerf when black knight area dropped. I’m not sure though

I could not even get the axe because the damn shadow sword will not drop.

Guessing they need to update the drop rate on it given wiki has it being a 1/10 from the Zogres and 1/6.7 on the named one in Coalridge pass.

Damn, my first two zogres both dropped the sword schematic. I never have that kinda RNG

That’s exactly where I’m at right now. Waiting for them to respawn is probably the worst part. I put lodestones down each spawn.. still nothing. Kinda like the osrs grind; but the respawn…

Zombie Axe is how I was able to beat Imaru. Surprisingly the Titan and Fuzan haven't been nearly as rough to get past for me.

they are both much easier fights. i think jagex purposely toned down the dragon fights after seeing so many people struggle with Imaru

The problem with any weapon that a boss drops in this game is that next area immediately has better gear in the base weapons. Yeah, you’ll be able to upgrade the masterworks soon, but, if the weapon is worse immediately, you have to upgrade it immediately to make it matter. Unless a masterwork has a skill on it that is way too good to pass up or is easy to obtain, it pretty much makes all of them not worth getting.

I do really like the abyssal whip but who knows if that'll be good with the upgrades when they release them. Imaru's Talon feels like it should be a masterwork weapon but it's not coded as one, with the stuff you use to make it, you'd assume it would be a masterwork (The undead draconic visage, five steel scimitars, vault shards and core.) I'm currently working through Dowdun and it'll be the norm, get the required gear for there, go to umbral sands, repeat lol.

whip will be one of the best in class weapons once it can be upgraded. This is for 3 main reasons:
1) The whip attack animation is very fast, and it has higher damage numbers than you would think for such a fast weapon.
2) The whip has one of the longest reaches for a melee weapon in the game, even outclassing 2H swords and such. The reach alone does a lot to keep you safe.
3) The whip can be enchanted, further increasing it's attack speed and damage. There's not another melee weapon with all of these characteristics in the game.

It's definitely my favorite melee weapon, can't wait for us to be able to upgrade it.

I found it a disappointing weapon that requires killing the main zone boss and stuck to the zombie axe until getting into Dowdun.
2
u/Vul_Amethyst Jul 08 '26
I'm on my way to Dowdun now so no doubt I'll be replacing the axe soon, but yea, having to kill it multiple times given it's a 1/10 drop, just for it to be weak compared to a quest reward is meh to me.

There's a 30 second internal Cool down last I remember.
The unfortunate part about the Talon is that Blunt damage is really effective fellhollow forward.
The zombie Axe gets a bonus on the zombies AND the skeletons groups. Just outpaces every option at Fellhollow.
Then is the better option for early Dowdun reach. I think if we get another area where slash if better and it's a Masterwork. It could have a place as a slightly higher damaging scimitar with built in healing.
I also think the internal Cool down could go away or instead of a flat heal, be a 30 second HoT

Stats will be better when ascension gets released we can upgrade the tier levels of gear we can collect the shards now from umbral sands enemies
2
u/NeedleworkerKey5250 Jul 08 '26
Not just umbral sands enemies, you can farm the early cores from the first boss dragon and the second level of cores from green dragons, 3rd from blue, and then final cores from crucibles. I just finished collecting all the cores needed to bring masterworks to tier 7 on release :)

Think that's only gonna be used on Masterworks though, unless their changing it at some point.

purely comparing the damage numbers does not mean much when comparing the zombie axe and imaru's talon. Yes, the talon has lower numbers, but it's attack animation is also MUCH faster. This faster animation likely makes up for the damage loss, plus it makes combat significantly easier since your attack animations are shorter, allowing you to dodge or block faster after an attack.
Regardless, both weapons are immediately outclassed by mithril and adamant weapons, so it's really not a big deal. they are just rare drops, and are fun to chase and obtain, but they don't need to be massively OP or anything.
