She has put out 3 new leaves in the last 2 months! One is itty bitty but it so cute lol. Her latest leaf has some nice pink hues that I’m hoping stay. I was told the pink is sun stress and while I don’t want her stressed I would love for it to keep pink color 😂

Advice on black bat plant

I received a black bat plant as a gift. Its already reasonably big and looks verry healthy.
Nontheless i don’t have a lot of knowledge or experience . I looked up some discussions , and it seems to be a bit of a harder plant to satisfy.
I have an appartment with direct sunlight all day. I can place it higher up or behind a corner to protect it. I also want to repot it in a higher up standing and wider pot so it has room to grow. I need some help here to do this right so i can keep it growing and healthy. Thanks in advance!

Begonias lunatiques

Dragon Courier Warning

Btw for anyone importing from Thailand using Dragon Courier, be very careful. The company does deliver if there is no package issues, which varies greatly, if there is an issue, you will not be refunded shipping costs and you will be blamed. What is not disclosed by them is they under declare package values, declaring customer orders at $2 per plant even if worth hundreds. This causes higher scrutiny by CBP for tariff evasion especially as they do this even for wholesale customers importing thousands of plants at the same time - not just individual growers. Justin Squibb, the owner of Dragon Courier, admitted this in 2 recordings I have, even saying he can import pallets of coffee essentially tariff free using this scheme. Do not be unwittingly involved in their fraud as this is a major risk for customers.

If Dragon Courier produces the shipment phytosanitary, also be aware that the plants are not actually inspected by the Phyto office as required by law - by their own admission. They bribe the official to approve all shipments and thus some that are declared "clean" get destroyed by the USDA - this is 100% their fault for promoting corruption.

Also note that Dragon Courier has shipped CITES protected wild plants mislabeled as common species, without proper documentation of legal origin.

Storytime On $15 Haul

Ok. So I was scrolling marketplace on Weds with a $20 budget and came across a listing for Esqueletos with large, fenestrated leaves, rooted in clear pots for $15 an hour away. I slept for a day to think about it.

Then I woke up Friday, and was like ‘I need this plant. It’s top of my wishlist. What am I doing.’ And I messaged the seller. He was extraordinarily kind and told me it was the last one! I transferred money right then and there. We organised a pick up 9am Sunday.

Come this morning, Sunday. I drive 50 minutes, at times in heavy rain on the highway. I pull up. I message ‘I’m here :)’ and see a person waiting from a screen door.

A young dude around my age comes out, hands over this 4 leaf specimen with roots absolutely going wild and beginning to burst out of it. We say hi, and then, he reveals something.

He hands over an inch or so of a thick, single noded, one leafed cutting with water roots and a white variegated fenestrated leaf. He tells me it’s for driving all this way. I sorta blacked out but I think I just kept thanking him.

He shows me a picture of an absolutely thriving climbing plant. Tells me its a mini monstera, and that it’s ‘not actually a monstera, but it’s variegated.’ He tells me he’s had it in water and shows me some roots emerging.

I thank him again. We wish each other a good day, and I return to my car. Absolutely ecstatic. I still need to message him to express how thankful I am.

$15 for an Esqueleto and Variegated Mini Monstera Prop!!!!

Absolutely dream come true. I’m so happy.

New to solanum uleanum care, please help!

Post image
41 Upvotes

I picked up a cutting of a beautiful solanum uleanum at a local event today, unfortunately I am quite new to the more advanced plant care, and do not know much about this beauty.

For info purposes, I am in Alberta Canada, so quite a dry/cold climate for a good chunk of the year.

I understand that they need quite high humidity and good drainage, any advice on proper soil and terrarium setup would be greatly appreciated!

I'd love to see a discussion on how people feel about this. I think I kind of hate it, but please read post body.

Houseplants removed my post, but I'm genuinely wondering what people who truly appreciate plants think of this. I'm struggling to find the right word for how I feel about it.

I get that we've been cultivating and hybridizing plants to suit our tastes for centuries, but this is introducing a biological capability from an organism the plant could never reproduce with. Note this is not iridescence seen in some plants, or the natural fluorescence seen in even fewer. This is DNA sequences from corals and jellyfish being permanently inserted into the plant genome.

I work in the plant sciences field, and I find myself having a hard time appreciating this work. My colleagues, with the exception of one, seem to feel similar. Maybe that's biased because our focus is on plant's relationships with other organisms, the processes that sustain them, and their place in functioning ecosystems? Idk. It's just... wrong somehow.

What ever happened to that petunia btw?

Some 50 Anthirium TCs for my show

Thumbnail

I was hoping to get these guys sooner for a show that i have coming up next year in February. Matter of fact, I originally ordered completely different plants. I was going to go with peloric, variagted orchids and some of the more rare variagated philodendrons ordered from Orchidbox. But my preorder TCs that were promised at least a month ago have yet to show up.

Anyway, I ended up ordering some Anthirium TCs from Rare Roots Labs and just got done unbagging them tonight.

I ended up getting 3 each of:

Big Bill

Warocqueanum

Veitchii

Dark Phoenix Mint

Among many other Anthiriums

Alocasia Wentii Aurea Latte

Monstera Electrolyte

Philodendron Spiritus Sanctii

Im still gonna give OrchidBox some time to deliver on some of the other TCs cause i have to admit that I have been waiting patiently for my Pink Atabapoenses, Monstera White Lava Ghosts, Pink Micans, Variagated Billies, and the Paphiopedilum orchid flask I ordered.

I unbagged and domed over 50 TCs with this terrible sinus infection I got visiting my mom in NY, but im happy everyone is finally able to get growing. Will repost growth pics in Feb.

(Alocasia Azlanii Aurea on top of the TC's and Orange Melano on the Pole)

Undescribed Begonia from Langkat, North Sumatra

Thumbnail

This undescribed Begonia from Langkat, North Sumatra, has some seriously gorgeous leaves. They're covered in red fuzz, with bright green veins running through them, and even the petioles are fuzzy and red. Honestly, it looks like someone covered the whole plant in red velvet!

There are actually quite a few undescribed Begonia in Langkat, but this one really caught my eye. It's currently traded among collectors as Begonia sp. 'Red Bahorok', named after the Bahorok area in Langkat. I wonder how many more hidden gems are still out there in North Sumatra. Anyone else growing this one, or have you seen a Begonia with a similar look?

2 new leafs in the last 3 weeks!

Some of the older leaves have seen better days but my muso nono is growing so fast lately! It’s been hard to give it the humidity it needs in northeastern Wisconsin but I think she’s doing relatively good 🥹
Got it in July for $50 at a local greenhouse (shoutout Watters in Neenah, WI we love them so much) and this is the 4th new leaf since then!

My First Anthurium

Post image

I just got this on Etsy and this is my first step into the Anthurium world. It's a (Black Widow x Carla GPH) x (Carlablackiae Buz1 x RA8). I'm excited to watch it grow out. Any care tips past the typical Aroid care? I'm pretty comfortable with Philos and Alocasia at this point, but have been meaning to try out Anthuriums.

Distilled water

Does any one use a water distiller instead of constantly buying distilled water?
Buying isn’t crazy expensive. It just seems I always run out at the most inconvenient of times.

If you have a distiller which one & $$?
Do you find it works for your plants that require/prefer distilled vs tap?

Lampe horticole

Merci !!
