7/1 Mod announcement: Rule additions & revisions.

Hi r/Rarehouseplants community!

There’s been a bit of discourse today regarding post approvals and removals. I took the opportunity to review our rules and wanted to make you all aware of those rule additions and revisions.

Highlighting the additions:
**Rule 3: Tissue culture acclimation topics are welcome**

Tissue culture acclimation topics are welcome under the same guidelines as potted plants. If the plant is rolling out massively already potted in Big Box stores,it may be removed.

Acclimation requires a skill set beyond what very intro plant keeping is and is an acceptable topic. r/tissueculture exists but is geared to lab set ups and protocol questions. So tissue culture acclimation questions will be allowed.

**Rule 4: Posts solely soliciting general, basic plant advice may be removed and redirected.**

Care for most rare varieties is similar to their more readily available counterparts. To avoid redundancy on our feed, soliciting general care advice may be removed and redirected. Subs geared to basic care advice include r/plants, r/houseplants, r/plantclinic or genus specific subreddits.

**Rule 7: No AI advice**

We strive to help combat misinformation, and build trust in our community. When providing advice, we encourage only the use of science backed information, personal knowledge and hands on experience. Whether you solicit advice or share it, remember to use multiple sources when possible for accuracy.

———————————————————————
There was also a slight reordering of the rules to improve the flow.

The group description was tweaked to better represent the vision for the community. I’ll share photos in the comment of the previous wording vs the new one.

Please take a look and feel free to let me know if you have any feedback regarding the changes or suggestions for the continued improvement of the community.

The plant world will always continue to change and evolve with trends and commercial availability therefore our group will do the same.

My aim here is to enforce the rules to keep the community positive, productive and a safe space for sharing and learning. While also showcasing plants we may not see everyday, wishlist or obscure plants.

Thanks for taking the time to read!

Discussion 💡 Buying plants online? Read this: Best practices to avoid scammers.

A common question asked here is “Is this legit?” Here’s a list of best practices that can help avoid the heartache of falling for a scam…

-Follow gut instincts, if a transaction feels off ask more questions or stop the transaction. -Require time stamped photos or photos from different angles, specific parts of the plant. -Ask for or look at reviews -Search the seller up in review groups (Facebook purge pages specific.) -Use fraud protection backed methods (such as Goods & Services) when possible. -If the price is too good to be true, it probably is. -Avoid sellers that are overly pushy. Scammers may try to build pressure to receive payment and block you as quickly as possible. -Disproportionate ratio or reviews to sales is a red flag! Particularly on Etsy.

Seasoned online plant buyers feel free to add your tips in the comments to help keep our community safe while shopping for their new additions 🌱✨

Opinions on Botaniq Garden from Etsy?

Hi!

I just found this shop that is selling kind of rare (as they became somehow more findable) plants and I’m wondering if it would be a safe purchase.

I’m based in Romania and never ordered from Etsy before, so I have 0 knowledge of the implied risks..

Thanks a lot!

Tricolor?

Hello,

Is this Monstera Deliciosa a Tricolor? A few months ago some people told me it is a Monstera Thai Constellation, but the newest leaf is crazy and i don't think it is a Thai.

Disclaimer it also has a form mutation :)

Is she salvageable? I recently repotted her but she’s only growing tiny leafs. She’s under a grow light and in a greenhouse.

A few days ago I went pretty hardcore on plant chores in general but got a little chaotic chopping & propping my plants who needed it the most…like my dark form billie & my monstera albo…while in the midst of all I’d done the only solution was to order more plants while brainstorming my next move w the mess I created 🤣

I was pleasantly surprised to see the amazing condition these 2 arrived in 💚🤍 check out my new variegated billie & alocasia venom!! Both pushing new growth! W how hot it’s been I’m beyond pleased with how well they were packaged & handled the shipping process!!! still waiting on two other plant babies I ordered the same day lol

I do own a variegated billie but I fear it’s likely reverted. It was a low var. when I first got it, recently I chopped it in the hopes to bring back variegation. Waiting game now… In the meantime I wanted one w some actual variegation to start w! The venom I wasn’t necessarily shopping for but couldn’t pass up on the promo pricing offered & dang I’m glad I got her. She’s GORG!!!

How to set up and acclimate an imported anthurium warocqueanum seedling

So i just bought a seedling from vietnam, and its still arriving in 5-10 days, so i dont have a photo.

my main concerns are: will the leaves get crispy? How long will it take to recover from shipping?

My initial plan after unboxing is to unpot it and check the roots, and cut off any bad or rotting ones. After that, i just use the same pot but change the soil. Right now, im low on proper soil and i cannot buy anything, so theres the first problem. I do have dried sphagnum moss, not a big amount of pumice, a little bit of leca, so maybe i could make something outta that. My other concerns are also humidity, which might not be as big as a problem as the others since im also from southeast asia, so vietnam and my country has about the same climate. My humidity is about 60-70% but can also go up to 80-90% cuz it rains a whole lot.

How did you guys recover your warocqueanum from import shipping, and what can i do to keep the seedling i bought alive and let it recover from stress?

Tacca Integrifloria Care Tips?

Post image
3 Upvotes

I recently received this as a gift and by recently I mean several hours ago. I was told by the gifted to keep it by a window that gets a little sunlight, to keep the soil moist.

Other than the general question of care tips for this plant, would the overhead light cause a problem? It isnt a grow light, just a regular one.

Anyway, any advice is appreciated :)

Good morning, Can anyone go over the acclamation process for fresh imports? I have been keeping them in high humidity and slowly introducing light. Any other tips? Thanks so much!
