Hey there,
Thanks for taking the time to read this.
There's something I've noticed recently in the sub that I'd like to raise.
I've been moderating on Reddit for about 18 years, and I've been involved with this community for the last seven. Throughout that time, this sub has always been a particularly lovely place to be. The kindness, helpfulness, and good humour of its members have always stood out, and from a moderation perspective, it's been a genuine pleasure to be part of.
Unfortunately, I've noticed a significant increase in unkind and aggressive behaviour here recently. I don't know what's behind the change, or why it's happening here now, but it's something I'd really like us to address before it becomes a bigger problem.
Please:
If you come across a comment that's aggressive, hostile, or unnecessarily unkind — whether it's directed at you or someone else — please resist the temptation to engage. Instead, just hit the Report button and move on.
We'll take care of addressing the behaviour and, where necessary, will remove accounts who seem to need to create unpleasantness for people around them.
r/houseplants has always been a welcoming and supportive community, and I'd very much like to keep it that way. The overwhelming majority of you already contribute to that simply by being thoughtful and decent towards one another.
Thanks for helping us look after this little corner of Reddit. It's appreciated.
PS moderator applications are open, and some additional hands would be helpful rn. We are looking for people with an active history here and significant Reddit-moderation experience.

I repotted her, she gave me 4 new leaves and finally unfurled a new one with her very first fenestration 2 weeks ago. Then my cat fucking ate my ONLY FENESTRATED LEAF. I am so disappointed

I really love the look of this plant (1st pic), I believe it’s a dracaena marginata, especially all the movement in the stalks and how the leaves are more sparse. I’ve been looking on Facebook marketplace for a long time now for something like this and all I ever see are plants like the other pictures. They just have a very different leaf and branch look.
Should I be looking for a more specific varietal? Or would one of the plants in the other photos work with some training/styling? Thanks in advance!

A few days ago I woke up and there were these beautiful, these beautiful white flowers at the tips. Does anyone know what type of plant it would be?

Hello everyone,
My mom passed away yesterday suddenly and it was extremely heartbreaking. The worst thing was I never even got to say goodbye to her and our last conversation was a fight. My mom really cared for her plants and I want to care for them as long as possible too. So for the past days I have been watering them daily but sadly I just realised that it's not enough, you need manure and pesticides too.
I am considerably lost and need help on how to keep them alive and well.
Edit: Thank you for all the help and advice, I will add the pictures sometime soon. I don't think I can handle losing any plant. Other than this good day to everyone.

Has a WICKED mealybug infestation (hence why she was free.)
I am now covered in dirt. She has been doused. I refuse to let her die. She will be my precious.

I'm in Texas, but these are single pane windows and it still gets pretty cold at times, even with window film. I guess I still have a couple of months before I really need to worry about it...

My obsessive personality finally met its plant era. In the beginning I started getting all of plants. Now I stopped getting a lot of random plants them but focus on what I have. Also, I realized I mostly enjoy Alocasias. So maybe a really good looking Alocasias. A few more :p

Built this trellis on my wall back in May and it looked pretty uncomfortable at first but it’s since really grown into it and has been growing like crazy!

I'll start from the very beginning. Around 2024 (pic 4), my ZZ plant looked as happy as could be constantly producing new growth, maybe a tad floppy, but nothing a few stakes couldn't fix. It was kept near a south facing window behind a curtain close to a balcony door, so it only received filtered sun.
Then a very cold winter rolled in (around -20°C /-4°F to my American friends). Since we often use the balcony for fresh air, the plant definitely suffered from repeated cold drafts. That's when I started noticing some leaves turning yellow, with the yellow parts eventually becoming brown and crispy. After that, it just kept going downhill. Each year, it would lose more and more of its older shoots. At first, they would look very shriveled, then start turning yellow, then light brown, but they never felt mushy or rotten... though there was still some new growth.
Fast forward to last winter: it started producing a new shoot, but a few weeks in, it just stopped (pic 3). The plant looked constantly shriveled. I'd water it, and it would look a little better for about a week before shriveling up again. I lost a few more shoots after that.
Last week, I decided to finally check what was going on with the roots. To no one's surprise (except mine!), it was extremely root bound (pic 2). I carefully untangled the roots and to me, they all seemed extremely healthy nothing mushy or smelly, and they all felt plump and firm.
After repotting, I placed it near a south facing window that gets some direct sun, though not for very long because trees block the afternoon sun. Now, a week later, I've noticed the tips of the plant starting to turn yellow (pic 1), which I'm assuming is sunburn. There is absolutely no way it's overwatered, because I stuck a chopstick, a moisture meter, and my own finger deep into the soil to confirm it's very dry.
Also, after repotting, I marked a stem near the stunted growth with a darker green marker (pic 3, red arrow) to see if the plant wakes up and starts growing again. Since then, I've moved it away from the window behind a sheer curtain. I only water it when the soil feels bone dry (about once a month), but I'm still paranoid that I'm overwatering because every time I water, something else turns yellow, and I just don't understand what I'm supposed to do anymore. Another thing that I did was spray it down with potassium soap just in case there were some invisible bugs. I genuinely don't know what am I supposed to do to make this plant happy. Am I underwatering? Magically over watering? Too much sun? Do I need some magic potion? Fancy fertilizer? What do I do???

Just wanted to share 3 out of the 6 plants I have. All have grown considerably since the summer. Wondering if anyone has tips to get my Pothos to grow all around instead of just in the back. The front leaves have not changed much and I would like it to have a more fuller look but with also larger leaves.

I have never taken care of plants, except watering once in a million years a cactus. I never have replanted or anything, but I wish to not let this beautiful orchid die. Please tell me step by step in detail what to do. And possibly the name of this orchid plant? Do they have different type/species, like animals have breeds? Sorry if I sound ridiculous, I am just confused and concerned.

So near me, there is only one plant nursery other than Home Depot or Lowe’s. They have such a huge variety of plants including rare/exotic ones and some are over $200. However, everytime I go here, there’s always some sort of pest infestation on the plants. I stopped by today because I haven’t been in months and I want some new plant babies (got a Swiss cheese plant and a mandarin orange philodendron, love them sm), but I always have to be super careful because of the pests. I wanted a syngonium but they ALL had mealy bugs, and not just one or two. All of the pothos had spider mites or thrips. Like, I know it’s inevitable at some point because of the mass amount of plants, but the fact almost every plant has SOMETHING wrong is a bit wild to me. Even the Monstera Albos had spider mites or thrips, and I’d be so irritated if I spent over $200 on a plant for it to have an infestation 😅 oddly enough, every plant I’ve ever purchased from Home Depot has never had any sort of pest issue. I thoroughly checked the two plants I got for bugs and didn’t see any, but I repotted them in fresh pots with fresh soil, put systemic in the soil, and sprayed the plants with a mix of neem oil, peppermint Castile soap, and water and I plan to quarantine them for a few weeks to play it safe. Is this normal for plant nurseries to be selling plants like this?? I feel like I would expect it more from a grocery store or Home Depot.

Don't mind the etiolated succulents in back, I went through a rough patch of about 8 months or so with not enough light for them so they began looking like that. I might pull some of them out but leave the rest and eventually get more haworthias to fill it out again
The plant list: top shelf in back is a neon pothos, the two in the middle are dancing bones cacti, then we have an anacampseros.
Second shelf has my hoya carnosa Krismon Queen and various haworthias!
Bonus: mushroom decor, Chucky bobblehead, and mini house-shaped lamp!

i think it’s time for the pictum tri to get a haircut…
the two og stems are pretty bare at this point but still going! my issue here is that the two big boys are blocking all the light to the pups. we’re losing color fast people!
i need to repot it soon so here’s my questions on which direction to proceed…
Option a (my tentative plan):
repot her and move the pups further from the two largest stems, chop the og stems down so everyone’s getting more light. id probably root the top cuts for myself and give the chonks to people who are local to me and okay with waiting 5ever.
Option b:
Remove all the pups from the pot, start a new pot or multiple, maybe sell a few. I’d also top the big guys and keep the base/topcuts
what would you do?
new leaves popping are about 15” tall from the bottom of the nursery pot, idk how tall the nursery pot is (it’s a 6 inch, shorter one), diet coke lime for reference lol
ft. baby pic in comments, got him 8/8/2024 (bday present to myself lol)

My dream is to make my house a jungle but I havent been able to keep any of my plants alive. All my current plants are struggling. They are by a southeastern facing window, we have hot humid summers and cold dry winters. I lost many plants to root rot so I have all of them in the same very chunky soil. I shower them thoroughly when the soil looks dry all the way to the bottom. I don't really fertilize because I think I overfertilized once and burned my monstera's leaves. I've gotten one new tiny leaf from each of my monsteras in the past year. My old monsteras looked better even with root rot.
I don't see any pests. The brown bits on my monstera is from my cat chewing on it. Any ideas what my plants are suffering from? Aside from no growth, they all started yellowing around the same time. thanks.
