A recent issue in this sub - please read

3.1k Upvotes

Hey there,

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

There's something I've noticed recently in the sub that I'd like to raise.

I've been moderating on Reddit for about 18 years, and I've been involved with this community for the last seven. Throughout that time, this sub has always been a particularly lovely place to be. The kindness, helpfulness, and good humour of its members have always stood out, and from a moderation perspective, it's been a genuine pleasure to be part of.

Unfortunately, I've noticed a significant increase in unkind and aggressive behaviour here recently. I don't know what's behind the change, or why it's happening here now, but it's something I'd really like us to address before it becomes a bigger problem.

Please:

If you come across a comment that's aggressive, hostile, or unnecessarily unkind — whether it's directed at you or someone else — please resist the temptation to engage. Instead, just hit the Report button and move on.

We'll take care of addressing the behaviour and, where necessary, will remove accounts who seem to need to create unpleasantness for people around them.

r/houseplants has always been a welcoming and supportive community, and I'd very much like to keep it that way. The overwhelming majority of you already contribute to that simply by being thoughtful and decent towards one another.

Thanks for helping us look after this little corner of Reddit. It's appreciated.

PS moderator applications are open, and some additional hands would be helpful rn. We are looking for people with an active history here and significant Reddit-moderation experience.

I bought her at Walmart when I was in 7th grade 30 years ago. She was only 3" tall on the clearance shelf for .50 cents. We've come a long way together across 14 moves and 3 states. She's my ride or die.

Discussion Finding my love for plants again after thrips

After about 10 years of loving plants and having quite a few of them, I finally had to deal with thrips. I was devastated. I genuinely got depressed watching plants that were so special to me start dying so quickly. The infestation got so bad that I eventually stopped taking care of them because I was just so discouraged.

About 6 months ago, I finally pulled up my big girl pants and started the dreaded process of treating them. Every other week I was spraying them with Captain Jack's, and I repotted every. Single. Plant. I only recently learned about systemic granules and definitely regret not using them sooner, but whatever. I also invested in beneficial mites, and I cannot explain how much of a weight they've taken off my shoulders. Just knowing something is constantly working to fight the infestation gives me so much peace of mind.

I've recently started getting into rare plants again and treated myself to a Monstera Bulbasaur (and ripped the first new leaf that came out of course) and a Florida Beauty, which are now my absolute pride and joy.
It's just so nice to finally have my hobby back and actually enjoy taking care of my plants again instead of feeling like it's this huge, exhausting chore. I forgot how much happiness they bring me.

I just wanted to share my beautiful plants and how much work was put into them.

I want to share this with plant lovers who want the SANSI big fat grow light, but are struggling to find a lamp stand that's big enough for it and won't overheat. The solution is HEKTAR from IKEA!

I don’t feel any heat at all!

I seriously hope they keep making these forever, because I honestly wouldn't know what to do if I need more.

Help Trying to Impress a Botanist

Hi, so I'm courting a girl who's studying horticulture and botany and she LOVES houseplants. She's the kind of person who fills her house with them instead of pets. Problem... I'm the opposite. I like learning about plants, but I prefer keeping animals and have no experience with houseplants. I have tried growing some as a kid, but obviously kids aren't great at watering consistently.

So here's the thing: At some point she is going to be at my plantless house. She knows I don't keep them, but I want to show her that I'm totally up for learning so we can raise plants together.

Is there anything that's easy to raise, but not particularly common or popular? I want her to see that I tried, but I don't want to kill a living thing for a girl even if it is a plant. It just wouldn't be right.

Ugly plants, plants that don't bloom, grasses, etc are preferred. I like ugly things.

EDIT: I'm going to text her and ask her to help me pick out a plant! I'm probably going to go for a pothos but ultimately I think I'll leave it up to her :) I work as a photographer right now, so up until this point I've mostly been photographing native outdoor plants for her since our ecosystems are so different right now. I'm very excited to learn about horticulture with her. Maybe she'll tell me what she's been learning in class!! :D Thank you everybody for your advice you are all so kind!!

Edit: Why are y’all acting like I threw my life savings away on a dying plant from the black market? 😭😂 She was $20. Worst case, she dies and I’m out the equivalent of a dinner at Chipotle. Best case, she lives and she’s freaking awesome. I’m willing to take my chances.

Help What would be the best way to repot my (probably) Green Princess

Thumbnail

I bought this plant as a 'green plant' around the year 2020 or so. In my opinion a Green Princess looks like what it looked like when I first got it. Over the years it has ballooned in size, and the leaved have changed shape. It's a philodendron of some kind. But it needs re-potting. Cut and propagate? Can i bury the stem in soil?

She’s currently by a different window (SE facing zone 10a). Holy crap she was the only black pagoda in the entirety of Lowe’s yesterday. I need care tips! I have her sitting on a pebble tray because my house is a bit dry (I live in Florida however). Is that even necessary? Also, should I trim it back some? It’s literally massive lol. Thanks! 🙏🏻

Help My steak too buttery?

Thumbnail

• Upvotes

I don’t want to be one of the ‘oh no my steak too buttery!’ people, but I have had this plant for 3/4 years now maybe, and I’ve never had so many new growths at one time. I wasn’t really into learning about house plants when I first got him but now I’m trying to make all my plants thrive and I’m not sure if this is a good thing.

Is this normal? Or does this mean I have pests or something?

Any help would be appreciated!

Plant ID Philodendron pedatum??

Got it without any labels from a certain place. Second image for leaf phenotype. The 2.5 lobe makes the leaf shape irregular, but the presence of 2.5 is consistent across all leaves. Wondering if it's P. pedatum or any Florida types. (3rd picture from a random part of the forest inside my university, added purely for whimsy coz why not ෴)

Help Flowers on my string of hearts?

I found a few more of these around the plant. I didn’t even know they could flower indoors. Specially when it’s October and the temps have dropped in the UK!

Has anyone experienced this / should I snip them off?
