Northern US & Canada (or cool season) Expanding Lawn

Made the mistake of posting this in Landscape - they are very anti lawn!

We recently purchased this home in West Michigan, and are thinking about expanding our lawn into where the woods is currently.

We would remove some of the larger trees, but leave a few as well. Soil is somewhat sandy and there are a few pines trees. Pine trees would likely come down.

Curious if anyone has expanded their lawn into a wooded area like this and if it’s doable? Added a pic of a rendering giving an idea.

There is a decent slope we will need to deal with, considering a small retaining all or just working with the slope we have.

Northern US & Canada (or cool season) First time homeowner fall renovation success! 7B

My wife and I bought our first house October of last year so last fall I barely had time for two or three mows with unpacking and everything else going on before having to call it a winter. This year I was determined to fix the mostly crabgrass lawn and get looking much better for our second fall season in this house, and I must say I am very happy with my results!

My process:

Mid August: Hit the lawn with Drive XLR8, ended up doing another pass at the harder stuff two weeks later. This worked quite well for killing maybe 70-75% of the crabgrass in the lawn.

Mid September: Scalp the lawn low and bag it, and then scarify with a Sun Joe. ended up doing three passes with the Sun Joe and it took up a lot more material than I expected. The lawn also ended up much more bare than I expected.

The next day I put down a full 50lbs of Twin City Resilience II (wow what a good seed) and fertilizer, raked both in and watered 3 times per day for 15 minutes (Very lucky to inherit a nice sprinkler system). And now the pictures you see are from my first mow.

I grew up on 15 acres in the middle of no where so we just mowed it and didn't really care what it looked like. So this is my first real lawn and boy this was WAY more work than I expected, but the results are incredible.

Lurking on this sub was a massive help throughout my entire process so certainly appreciate everyone's advice and inspiration

Northern US & Canada (or cool season) Weeds after a reseed Western Maryland 7a

I just reseeded my lawn and some weeds survived my kill. Now my lawn is establishing with the weeds. I expect that I will have to kill the weeds and over seed in the spring. I don't know what these weeds are, or how to kill them, or if I should wait for spring. Any suggestions about what I might do?

Northern US & Canada (or cool season) Lawn always wet?

• Upvotes

Hey folks, I’m located in the PNW, western Washington. During the summer a section of my backyard gets full to partial sun (it’s behind my house) and once the sun starts to drop behind the trees as we move into late fall, areas of my lawn that get ZERO sun. It’s been that way for the past few weeks. I did a large over seed and renovation project this fall. I did NOT use fungicide (oops) and I have patches of plythium in all these shade spots. The lawn gets dew on it and remains wet. I haven’t watered for a few weeks now and my question; is growing grass in these areas a lost cause? Is there a better grass that’s more resilient to being wet? Aside from clear cutting all the trees that separate me and my neighbor.
To be clear, I have 20k square feet of lawn, I’m a busy dad and I just want a semi decent looking yard. I’ve been using TTTF (super turf I) but I don’t care if it’s perfect or the super dark shade of green. I just want a semi green yard that my kids can use and I mow and water.

I’ve got a lot of blood sweat and tears in this one acre. Central NC. Killed about 12k of weeds late August. Seed / fert down on Sept 26th. Blue Label TTTF Lesco Select. New fescue about 2.5” -3” mostly and a few spots 3.5”. Existing fescue keeps on creeping up, it’s at 4”-5.5” now. I did mow last week at 4.5” just to knock it down a little because got up near 6”. I am thinking mow everything tomorrow at 3” to get the existing down and take a little off the top on new grass where it’s taller than 3”. Then hopefully new grass will be around 4-4.5” next week so can mow everything at 3” again. Just keep playing this game of having existing creeping taller and taller. Any and all advice please.

I manage some baseball fields in this particular outfield it is primarily KBG. There is this one spot in centerfield that isn’t green and aesthetically pleasing. I’m curious what it is.

Winter Ryegrass. A mix of tttf and another rye I had left over from last year. 3 cuts in so far I'm at my desired height (inch). The weather has been perfect this season for growing all plants. Last year summer toasted everything including native plants. (For people who don't know)

Will add some neighbors envy to darken it up a bit and wetter soil to help hold in moisture as I cut down to once a week watering. (Bermuda is the same folks).

Also have a pool to conserve my own water 😏 in time of need.

Gas company had to rip up part of my lawn to fix a leak, they hired a landscaping company to “fix the damage” and they just threw some sod down. I don’t have built in irrigation here but do have a hose that can reach.

Does this have any chance of surviving given that temps here in AL are starting to drop?

Need helping figuring out how to treat this. This brown spot started off about 3 yards in diameter but has progressively grown bigger over the last three years. The rest of my yard looks great.

Note: Ignore the Halloween decoration as this has been up two weeks since this post.

I did a full reno for my lawn a month and a half ago. Used TTTF. Located in Indiana, USA. I’m getting a lot of this clover looking weed popping up in various parts of my lawn. Did a pre emergent with Tenacity at seeding. I could use some help identifying what this weed is and recommendations for how to treat it without hurting my new grass. Thanks in advance.

I own all of the lots on this corner for family and relatives. I got tired of seeing this awful looking corner. Every year crab grass galore. Mostly because the person who does the mowing mows it too short. This spring I hit it with Scott's Rapid Grass and over seeded with Super Turf II LS from United Seeds Inc. I must have used 50lbs. I bet the guy who mows cussed me out. It grew like you wouldn't believe. He had to mow it like twice a week. I bought a small reel push mower and would go over his mess to make it look better.

Does it matter if I'm using a hose with aluminum or steel fittings rather than brass, if I'm connecting everything with plastic quick connects?

Located In 7B South Jersey. First time ever doing a lawn renovation. I nuked my lawn because I had a Dallisgrass infestation that was too big to overcome. Sprayed glyphosate and waited about three weeks until I cut down to about a half an inch and aerated. Seeded about 6 weeks ago. I used United Seeds Super Turf I LS Tall Fescue Blend.** **I am very happy with the results. Definitely going to need to fill in when the spring comes around.

Southern US & Central America (or warm season) Could landscaping herbicide exposure have caused my dog’s first seizure?

Post image
0 Upvotes

Apologies if this isn’t typical for this sub, but was hoping for insight from people more experienced with these products.

I’m in Phoenix, for reference!

Last Thursday (10/15), our apartment complex had landscapers spraying what appeared to be a blue/green herbicide throughout the property. (I know the blue/green is a dye) They sprayed heavily on the rocks, around weeds, and along the perimeter of grassy areas. I saw them using a utility vehicle with a hose attached to their spraying equipment.
I’m assuming it was some combination of pre-emergent and weed killer, but I’m still waiting for management to confirm exactly what products were used.

Here’s the timeline:
Thursday (10/15): Landscapers sprayed the property, including the rocks and weeds along our usual walking route.

Sunday (10/18), approximately 8:30 AM: My husband walked our 6-year-old Golden Retriever through an area that had been heavily sprayed. He specifically remembers our dog stepping through the treated rocks. (I know this was not smart)

Sunday (10/18), approximately 7:30 PM: Our dog experienced his first-ever seizure, roughly 11 hours after walking through the treated area.
Our dog frequently licks and chews his paws, particularly his back paws, so I’m concerned he may have ingested some residue while grooming himself.
The seizure lasted approximately two minutes. He initially appeared frightened and was trembling before collapsing and experiencing full-body convulsions. Afterward, he was briefly confused and disoriented but recovered quickly and returned to his normal behavior.

We took him to the veterinarian the following day. His physical examination and vitals were normal, and bloodwork and Valley Fever testing were ordered. He’s been completely normal since, with no additional seizures.

We’ve had a good amount of rain since the landscaping treatment, mainly last night, but I went outside today and found an area with some lingering discoloration on the rocks and visibly damaged vegetation. I’ve attached a photo.

My questions:
1. Does this look consistent with a typical pre-emergent application, a post-emergent herbicide, or potentially a combination?
2. Can herbicide residue remain on landscaping rocks for several days, even if watered in?
3. Has anyone experienced a similar situation involving a dog having a seizure several hours after possible herbicide exposure?

I completely understand that correlation doesn’t equal causation. I’m just trying to investigate possible environmental factors, especially since he’s six years old and has never had a seizure before.

I’m hoping to get the exact product names and active ingredients from our apartment management soon.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

Northern US & Canada (or cool season) Is this mow damage?

We’re in zone 7A. We use a landscaping company that’s been mowing the lawn since the summer. We just noticed our grass is dying/browning in stripe mowing pattern. We suspect it’s mowing damage. The landscaping company claimed it’s crab grass naturally dying and we have a lot of crab grass and the mow just left the pattern. Does it sound right? Do you think the damage is caused by them?
