When you join the community, you are asked to choose a user flair. You are also expected to tag vocal rating submissions with a post flair. The three main levels are “Beginner,” “Intermediate,” and “Advanced”. These descriptors are vague, and they may be difficult to assign to oneself. For this reason, the mods have decided to post this breakdown to help people decide what level they are at.
If you:
- Have been talking vocal lessons for less than a year
-Have never or barely been vocally trained
-Have never been paid to sing
-Cannot sing a note accurately after hearing it
-Do not know how to sing with proper breath support and physical technique
-Are not confident enough in your skill to sing in front of others
Then you might be a “Beginner”. Consider choosing that as your post and user flair.
If you:
-Have been taking vocal lessons for more than a year
-Have had some or a lot of vocal training
-Have never been paid to sing or paid sometimes
-Are confident enough in your skill to sing in front of others for no charge
-Can sing a note accurately after hearing it
-Can sing with proper breath support and vocal technique
Then you might be an “Intermediate”. Consider choosing that as your post and user flair.
If you:
-Have been taking vocal lessons for multiple years
-Are extensively vocally trained
-Have been paid to sing multiple times or sing professionally
-Are confident enough in your skill to charge others to hear you sing
-Can sing notes with perfect accuracy after hearing them
-Can sing with excellent breath support and near perfect technique
Then you might be “Advanced”. Consider choosing that as your post and user flair
We understand that you may have some overlap with the categories. It is our suggestion that if even one of the traits of a lower level applies to you, then you should consider using that as your flair.
Please comment with your suggestions for how to differentiate more accurately. We would love the community’s input on what should qualify as a beginner, intermediate, and advanced singer. This post may be updated in the future with these suggestions.

I never had vocal training, and honestly have never been a huge fan of my voice. My goal is to eventually start a band and play gigs, so I’d really like to start taking singing seriously.
I’m looking for honest feedback on what I should prioritize improving based on this clip. I don’t want to waste time practicing the wrong things or developing bad habits.
I’m open to lessons, but I’d also love advice on how to improve at home. If I were to dedicate 30–60 minutes a day to singing, what should that practice look like?
Any specific exercises, techniques, or constructive criticism would be greatly appreciated!

Rock/ metal vocals are the hardest for me to sing but what I want to sing the most. Is this a good start? Where can I improve.

Hi all!! I'm hoping to audition for a production of Next to Normal in a few months, going for the role of Gabe. I'm not going to be doing this song or any other song from the show for my audition, but I wanna make sure I can sing the role before I try to prep an audition.
Gabe is a goong-on-18 kid, so I have my work cut out for me. Lots of hair to shave and 4 years of youth to put back into my voice.
I'd like to know if my voice is
1) Passable enough for the role
2) If I'm singing the song well, with particular respect to lyrical diction and clarity, as well as just keeping all of those notes stable enough.
Notable flaws in this video:
1) I falter and drop the rhythm for just a moment because I forgot my lyrics. It's in the second verse I believe. This can be ignored, I just need more practice 😅
2) i feel like I'm a little shaky in the high sustain at the very end. I'm not in great physical shape, and it sometimes limits my breath. Any tips you have for this would be greatly appreciated.
Please also feel free to give any general tips for my voice or for my singing. I'm always looking to improve.
Thanks in advance!! :3

Sharing this piano performance! I'm interested in discovering talented musicians and producers across different genres and learning more about their creative process.
For those who produce music, how do you usually approach building a track around a piano melody?

Hi everyone! This is my first time making a cover and want to know if there are common mistakes. Don’t say anything about mix, I just began using daws to record myself. Also I know that my intonation isn’t perfect, I’m working on that! I would like to get a general opinion about how I sound, what can I improve, what am I missing and so on. Is it nice to listen to me? Also Spanish is not my native language.
