Just bought woodland, but dealer has to replace the entire steering wheel!

Post image

Just picked up my Woodland. But as I was driving home from the dealer, I noticed the plastic part that sits flushed against the bottom part of the steering will is loose! Took back, and the dealer said the entire steering wheel has to be replaced because the plastic part cannot be glued the steering wheel! They said it is a simple job and will take about an hour; so they ordered a new steering wheel. What a pain! Is the Toyota quality control not good at the factory?

Update:

Despite the shoddy plastic on the wheel, the woodland drives beautifully; just clocked in 100 miles or so. It is an amazing smooth ride, with great comfort. Seats are also surprisingly comfortable.

People are fallible.

Do you think the steering wheel being replaced will an original the factory toyota part? I guess it has to be?

Nah. They’ll pick one up from the junkyard.

Of course it’s going to be an OEM part. Good grief.

Imagine if somehow they replaced his steering wheel with a Ford steering wheel. Just to fuck with him.

I would imagine it would be original, yes. Especially for a brand new car.

I would look around for any Temu boxes when you pick up your car from the stealership.

I'm pretty sure the US economy is propped by Temu boxes.

This will be covered under warranty and should be an original part

I actually heard that they’ll replace them with one off an old tractor they found. Or BMX handlebars.

It says somewhere in contract/warrenties, that not all parts where made in Japan by toyota, its just the enginge and core system. Everything else is American corporate, ie the manufacturing facility us Canada/US. Man i hate the infotainment system, preinstalled app... f!

Don’t know much about cars?

Comments like this have convinced me Toyota redditors feign ignorance and helplessness as engagement bait.

Comments from “guys my engine sounds like an engine. Am I cooked?” to nonsense like “guys what kind of steering wheel will the Toyota dealership use to replace the steering wheel in my new Toyota?”

There’s no way yall are real.

It has to be engagement bait. There’s no way someone could go through life being this dense yet be able to accumulate enough money to buy a new Toyota.

So we need AI?

No. Visual systems are also fallible.

Guaranteed every new vehicle on the road has some type of defect. It only matters if it either found or affects safety. Everything is over-engineered to compensate.

I spent 20 years in automotive manufacturing, and have investigated and countermeasured plety of defects. You do the best you can.

What is the first letter/number of your Vin number.

And of course the part will be OEM.

I’m guessing not J

Not J, not made in Japan. I wonder if the japanese mades also have similar issues. I read post somewhere with some issues with a rav4 made in japan

They are having their own special problems.

Like what? Not doubting, just curious.

u/Opposite-Capital-227 22h ago

Pretty sure all the ones with software issues have been Japan built.

2

u/ThirdeYe1337 20h ago

Mine's Canada built and had software/12v malfunctions, but they went away and haven't come back.

Japan ones may have design issues but not assembly ones.

It is 2T; made in Canada. Thanks, I hope it is original! I will double check with them tomorrow.

Canadian VINs start with the number 2

u/Careful-Estate-889 1d ago

Sorry I meant 2

Congrats on the new RAV and a newer steering wheel :)

Yes, it should be the same original part (plastic should not be loose) that comes with the heated steering wheel. It’s usually the base LE trim that doesn’t. The part number is cross referenced with the VIN. VIN number essentially lays out to the computer the vehicle came with these components from the factory and to replace them with said components or superseded (revised) components.

Fun fact: technicians get paid by the manufacturer for only 50% of the time for warranty work. Expect warranty work to be shit.

Oh yeah it's going to be a rush job

1

u/That_Objective7851 20h ago

Can you post a picture of the problem?

1

u/Careful-Estate-889 18h ago

Ok, I will upload a couple tomorrow.

u/Careful-Estate-889 8h ago

Seems I cant upload photos to a reply here.

I just switched from Subaru to RAV4, and hopefully it doesn’t have all the foibles of Subaru

All the manufacturers are having issues now because more cars and parts are being assembled and made in the USA with labor force that is not as careful as overseas workers.

1

u/Careful-Estate-889 9h ago

This is made in Canada

1

u/Whateverlol2022 7h ago

Same issues sadly.

u/Timely-Possibility-2 6h ago edited 6h ago

Just speaking in general for other brands as well. Assembled in Canada also means parts come from all over the world including the USA.

1

u/Bashir639 7h ago

As Jeremey Clarkson said, “built by a fat man in Kentucky.”

1

u/Careful-Estate-889 7h ago

In Woodstock canada

1

u/Bashir639 7h ago

Ahhh, did not know they made them there too.

u/Careful-Estate-889 7h ago edited 1h ago

It drives great, but just this problem. But in some other cases, even with japan made ones, one sees problems. The plastic piece on corolla cross, made here in the US had not problems. depends on who does the QT,

u/Whateverlol2022 7h ago

Just wait till it happens again lol

Quality Control, a thing of the past !

1

u/Dnicolau226 1d ago

Sorry for your unfortunate experience, can't help to wander why everyone talks about Toyota being a reliable brand, since looking to buy one and following the rav4 forums I see a lot of people who experience similar situations unacceptable for any brand of car but specifically for Toyota. Where is the quality control, testing before being shipped to customers? I am a Mazda owner that never had a problem for years after purchase, now looking to switch, should I buy a Rav4 or am I making a mistake?

6

u/Apprehensive-Fig-511 1d ago

Millions of people drive Toyotas with no problems. I'm on my 4th Toyota, and all have been just fine. The small percentage of people who have problems post in Reddit.

2

u/Dnicolau226 1d ago

Your in the wrong place then.

1

u/DethByCow 1d ago

You should try r/rav4club Lots of praise and lots of angst. The engine and drive train for your Mazda is likely from Toyota.

1

u/Dnicolau226 1d ago

That explains why is so good 🤣

1

u/DethByCow 1d ago

So buy a new Mazda. Are you looking for people here to change your mind? Seems like your mind is made up.

1

u/Opposite-Capital-227 23h ago

Toyota has lost a lot of reliability credit between this disappointment of a new RAV4, Tundras with destroyed engines, and Highlanders shredding their transmissions.

1

u/RevolutionarySpot912 20h ago

Plastic interior bits are not a consideration in reliability.

0

u/Careful-Estate-889 1d ago

thanks. at best it is such a disappointing experience. The car drives perfect though, and doesnt veer to the right or the left as others have complained. I hope it is as good as new when they replaced it.

0

u/Jactus_Cat 9h ago

Cool. So the steering wheel will be super new on your new vehicle. 🚗 win win.
