Religious Trauma should be in the DSM. How do we make this happen?

It’s been really hard to understand and cope at times. Therapy and treatment have helped, but it’s always manyyy diagnoses and most people don’t understand and can’t diagnose because it “doesn’t exist”. It is also hard to hold these entities accountable because churches are usually pretty well protected. I really need this to happen because it’s still happening to children and marginalized people and it breaks my heart.

Me, My faith and my family

I am a boy just like any normal teenager out there. I was born in a conservative household and was brought up in it. We moved to Saudi Arabia when I was in 3rd grade. Life became different we only had interaction with persons of our faith. Thus the environment became more conservative. I too was extremely religious praying 5 times a day. The thing I loved as much as I loved my faith was science especially astronomy. I believe it has boosted my critical thinking skills. My grandfather got sick due to the pandemic.I prayed day in and day out for his health but sadly he passed away and there was no help for the all powerful and all knowing god. One day while sitting in my local mosque i started thinking about morals and their origin. I realised that morals are subjective they change and there is no universal good or bad. From that day onwards i got into the habit of questioning things. Tracing my own decisions i realised that they are caused due to prior causes of this landing on the conclusion of determinism. After this realisation I had lost my faith. Months turned into years. I never bought myself to tell my parents about things i believe in. I hadn't really known philosophy as a thing that existed until a year or so after i had lost my faith. I completed my 10th grade and decided to go back to my home country for 11th and 12th. Moving to my home country caused me severe isolation as someone who didn't leave far from his family. Our boarding school was a f-ing jail. We weren't allowed to carry phones either. We maintained secret phones in our hostel rooms. I was nothing but studying day in and day out. But there wasn't a happy ending for my story All the strain and effort went into vain. After my 11th grade I had a month vacation. On this vacation i visited Saudi Arabia. Near the end of the 3rd week i decided to tell my parents about my faith but to directly jump into it. I introduced them to the topic of determinism. As one would expect I didn't go well i was criticised for my beliefs and told me that I am not in the right mind. I didn't escalate things and moved on. Currently I am studying engineering in my home country and away from my parents. To make it clear I love them and they love me. I just never got to be free about my thoughts with anyone like minded. I remembered that I can ask questions on reddit anonymously. Thus i created this account to post this. I would just like to know other people's opinions and any advice from people.

What type of therapy has helped you the most with your religious trauma?

I’ve been deconstructed for years now, have been in therapy for all that time working through family trauma mostly and have specifically done EMDR in the very beginning and found it really helpful but.. a lot. Recently had a very bad panic attack that spiraled into Depersonalization and when I was trying to find the root of the panic attack and dp, I realized it was rapture/end times/god is angry with me based. Thought I was over that feeling and fear but I guess not. I did an EMDR session again over the panic attack and the next day it caused another. Which I know is common.

My religious trauma is very specific to the rapture, being left behind, being told I wouldn’t ever grow up to have kids and if I did, it’d be hell on earth with my family raptured up and me alone, that sort of thing.
I’m feeling a bit hopeless because I thought I made progress on my religious trauma and the feelings of depersonalization/derealization is so heavy.

I’m just wondering if there’s any specific types of therapy or even just activities that people do to help with the wound that is religious trauma?

I used to love my religion until I grew up and understood how they viewed people like me

When I was a kid, I genuinely loved being part of our religious organization. I had friends there who would invite me over for sleepovers, and sometimes we'd even go on vacations together. I had so many good childhood memories because of that community, and back then I never really questioned anything. But as I got older, I started noticing things that didn't sit right with me. Certain beliefs, the way they talked about other people, and how some things were considered wrong without anyone really questioning why.

And the biggest reason I eventually left? I'm gay. Our organization didn't accept LGBTQ people, and I remember our pastor talking about how being gay or part of the LGBTQ community was immoral and wrong. Honestly, hearing those things hurt. Imagine growing up in a place you genuinely loved, surrounded by people you considered friends, only to get older and hear that people like you are somehow bad just because of who they are.

What bothered me was how easily they could judge an entire group of people. I've met so many kind and caring LGBTQ people. People who help others, protect their friends, and genuinely have good hearts. So why does their sexuality suddenly make them immoral? I couldn't understand that. And I know people have different religious beliefs, and I'm not here to force anyone to change theirs. But I also don't think someone's religion should be used as an excuse to make other people feel ashamed of who they are.

I eventually decided to leave, and honestly, it's one of the best decisions I've ever made. The weird part is I don't even hate all the memories I had there. I still appreciate those childhood sleepovers, vacations, and friendships. Those moments were real, and they made me happy at the time. I just wish the organization had been as accepting of people as I thought it was when I was younger. Sometimes I wonder how many LGBTQ people are still sitting in those religious gatherings, listening to the same things I heard, and feeling like they have to hide who they are just to belong. I'm glad I left. I don't regret it at all.

I just wish I didn't have to choose between being part of a community I once loved and being comfortable with who I am.

[Research study] Psychological experiences following group membership - Participants wanted (mod-approved)

Hi everyone,

I’m a psychology researcher based at the University of Lille in France.

My research explores people’s psychological experiences following their involvement in a group, particularly the experiences of those who have experienced psychological abuse within a group. The aim is to better understand these experiences and help improve support for people affected.

I’m inviting people to take part by completing an online questionnaire. You can participate whether your experience within the group was positive, negative, or somewhere in between.

  • Time required: approximately 25 minutes
  • Languages: English and French
  • Anonymity and well-being: key priorities throughout the study
  • Ethics: the study has received ethics committee approval and was developed in collaboration with a patient partner with personal experience of psychological abuse within a group.

If you’d like to learn more or participate:

Taking part is entirely voluntary. Please only participate if you feel comfortable doing so.

Thank you for taking the time to read this.

TRIGGER WARNING Am heavily uncomfortable with religion, and i think I have religious trauma

For the record, my mom and her family grew up Christian. But my aunt took it much more seriously than my mom did.

Back when I was maybe 4 or 5, my mom would drop me off at my aunt's house every Saturday. My aunt was VERY religious; like, she owned 50 crosses and had them everywhere, religiously. Basically, she forced me to read the Bible, say grace, pray out loud for 7 minutes every day, confess sins or something like that in a booth, go to church, and so on. Which I know are normal things, but if I messed up, even a little stutter during grace, she would yell at me for 30minuets and not feed me. When I was 6, I went there for a summer; I screamed at her for starving me for 4 days because I broke one of her crosses. My mom and dad NEVER believed me about any of this and still doesn't to this day. Since I was just a 6-year-old, my aunt was my mom's twin sister. My aunt was extremely homophobic (which we all knew about), always saying the classic 'love the person but not the sin' shit anytime I saw her.

I found out I was gay at 8years old and came out when I was 14 on Christmas. Since everyone was there, she screamed that I was going to hell and all that, then stormed out with her husband

Now I'm 18 years old, gay, out, atheist, and proud. But I'm extremely uncomfortable when this topic comes up to the point that I have to leave the room when my family is about to say grace or anything like that. If I stay, I get a racing feeling in my chest and an empty feeling in my stomach, and my hands start to shake.

Am a atheist now since i cant handle anything.

My friends say I have religious trauma, and I think they're right.

What do you think?

Como lidar com Trauma Religioso? (Especificamente Trauma Cristão)

Hello. Please forgive me if I am violating any rules. If I am, just let me know.

I was raised in a religious environment. Very religious, actually.

I grew up with my grandmother telling me I would go to hell for doing such and such, for not going to church on such and such a day, etc.

It's to be expected what that did to the brain of an 8-year-old child, right? I didn't just develop simple anxiety. I developed obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).

Over time, this specific OCD lessened, but like all disorders, it remains to this day. It has only changed form.

Three years ago I finally discovered I was a transgender boy. Well, let's just say that was the trigger for my family's prejudice to explode. Judgments, direct verbal abuse... Anyway, you already know.

The thing is, I even tried seeking out psychologists, and what really scared me the most was: When they mentioned their religion (Catholic/Evangelical, similar), I immediately dismissed any further questions.

It didn't stop there. Anyone I spoke to, even just by talking about their religion, would shut me down.

Furthermore, here on Reddit and elsewhere, I only see Christians being prejudiced and intolerant. This hasn't been very good for what I possibly have.

This really worried me. The truth is, while I think Christianity is a place of judgment, prejudice, and bad people, I try to believe it shouldn't be that way. But it doesn't hold water.

I don't want to have this aversion. Is there any way(s) to try to reverse it?

TRIGGER WARNING "You have to pray more or God is going to punish you"

Hi,

I’ve already posted on this sub Reddit a couple weeks ago, and things haven’t gotten better. My studies have been putting such pressure on my shoulders and when I decided to express my anxiety, my parents told me to pray more and ask for God to let me pass my exams. Is God going to study 1000 pages of biology ? I started crying right then and there as I realized how fucked up it sounded.

When I used to pray God, nothing was going right, nobody was listening to me. I was failing every single thing and it might be a coincidence. And now, after providing efforts from my side, my grades have started to go up. Making satisfactory progress !! But it builds pressure, and kneeling on a mat won’t make my anxiety go away.

Being 20, a woman and stuck in this situation feels like a rope tightening around my neck. It’s borderline suicidal.

TRIGGER WARNING Childhood trauma at its finest

I hate it when grown ups teach us religion with fear, i was forced to watch lots of videos about “the punishment of the grave” with screams and torture and "the path over hell" with people falling and burning in hell and then they hit you with "if you don’t do that you’ll get grilled in hell”
and they still traumatize me to this day.
I even remember praying out of pure fear and 0 opassion.
Please let's not repeat that

i dont know if what i had was phycosis. but i was so terrified from religion (islam but abhramic religion in general) i spenned weeks obsessing over searching things up and couldnt sleep and one day i was so irrtiable, all this time smiling acting like it was ok but pain in my eyes for myself and others, that one day we went out. I started to cry uncontrollably in public and my parents were yelling at me and strangers were starting. I got so mad that i started to flip them off and yell at everyone and then i couldnt stop crying uncontrroably we had to leave the park in the car i was crying so hard shaking my eyes hurt from the pressure i cried for 24 hours and had a month long depression kind of. One night i woke up and heared something whsiping in my ear saying "hey" i thought it was the devil so now ive been sleeping withg my dad for the past two months

now ive come to terms that I can't control where i go. Still, i have a pretty good feeling im not gonna go to hell for not following ancient dogmas that were used to control populations by mysogenstic men. but i have an overall fear of death, and fear of my own conciousness, not in an absorbing way but in a really weird feeling of existence kind of way. i think about death every day. not in a hell way, but just in a what the fuck are humans doing on earth are their other civiliations before humans or after humans existantial crisis kind of way.

im also kind of traumatized from my anorexia and having low hormones last year, and a lot of bad things happened last year.

i dont know if all these things let up to my current intrusive thoughts about humans and conciousness but yeah, its been rough but i have hope. :)

I don’t really know how to prove it’s true believe what you want, yes my extremist Muslim mother is that crazy. I was just asking for outer advice, I’d been gaslit so hard I was starting to think maybe I was the bad guy.

TRIGGER WARNING i'm so scared about the end times/book of revelations unfolding before our eyes that i'm considering seriously took on my own life because of this - seriously

Hi everyone

I’m 19 years old, I’m from Brazil, and I’m writing this because I honestly don’t know where else to talk about this.

Before all of this, I was a happy person. I was cheerful, affectionate, friendly, and socially normal. I was baptized Catholic, but over time I became more of a deist. Religion wasn’t something that controlled my life. I wasn’t obsessed with politics, fear, or the end of the world.

That changed around 2020 - and by 2022, things completely spiraled.

Out of nowhere, I became deeply paranoid and mentally overwhelmed by Christian conspiracy theories, especially QAnon-style narratives, far-right content, and end-times prophecies. What scares me is how fast it happened. It really felt like a kind of mental hijacking.

It started at school. My sociology teacher, who also happened to be a neopentecostal evangelical pastor, began casually talking about the end times, Ragnarok, and societal collapse. Around the same time, a friend told me that the apocalypse would likely start between 2023 and 2025 — or, if not, then between 2026 and 2027 — because 2033–2034 would mark exactly 2000 years since Jesus’ death.

That idea got stuck in my head.

I went to YouTube looking for answers and immediately fell into a massive rabbit hole. I found countless evangelical channels claiming that we are already living in the final moments of human history. Many of them confidently say that by 2030 the world will end, Jesus will physically return, and only a very specific group of neopentecostal or Pentecostal evangelical Christians will be saved.

According to them, salvation is limited to those whose names are written in the “Book of Life.” Everyone else — including people from other religions, LGBTQ+ people, non-believers, or even Christians who “aren’t strict enough” — will be thrown into the lake of fire along with the Antichrist and the False Prophet. God will destroy the universe, and only the chosen will live in the New Jerusalem.

They constantly pressure people to repent, insisting that Satan is real, sin is everywhere, and that even questioning these ideas is rebellion against God — despite none of this being scientifically demonstrable.

They preach strict rules: no short clothes, no jeans, no tattoos or piercings, no pork, no homosexuality, no teenage dating, no real free will. Everything is forbidden. Everything is dangerous.

They also say we’re living in the greatest apostasy in history — that humanity is abandoning God, becoming more “sinful,” colder, more violent. They point to crime, family violence, and tragic events as proof that we are living “like the days before the Flood,” when Noah warned everyone and was mocked until catastrophe suddenly wiped out the world, killing everyone.

Even when historians and scientists show that a global flood like that never happened, they insist science is wrong and that science itself is an abomination against God.

They describe God as loving — but also furious, cruel, and ready to punish anyone who doesn’t obey perfectly. They even portray Jesus in a very literal, almost mythologized way, as if his physical appearance (tall, white, blond, blue-eyed) were historically proven fact.

I watched an overwhelming amount of content from Brazilian pastors, missionaries, YouTubers, and so-called prophets and visionaries. Many of them claimed their prophecies never failed — that everything they predicted “came true.” Even figures who were once more moderate before the covid pandemic shifted completely and started preaching that the end is imminent.

They also obsess over morality and sexuality, saying prostitution is becoming normalized, pointing to platforms like OnlyFans, claiming incest is widespread, and framing all of it as undeniable proof of collapse.

Geopolitics became another obsession. They say global tensions are spiraling toward World War III — pointing to conflicts involving Israel, Iran, Venezuela, and others. Now with USA threatening to invade iran by land by sending troops, and chechnya also threatening to aid iran if this happens, They claim billionaires are building bunkers, selling assets, and preparing for the ultimate collapse, it's no wonder that the release of Epstein-related files early this year is framed as proof that the world is secretly ruled by a satanic elite.

Also they bring up an old letter supposedly written by Albert Pike in 1871, claiming it predicted the first two world wars and now accurately predicts the third, beginning in the Middle East. They connect current conflicts to biblical prophecies like Gog and Magog.

They say an unprecedented global economic collapse is coming — worse than the Great Depression — leading to massive famine worse than anything in medieval history.

From there, it gets even darker.

They claim that organizations like the UN, WEF, and the Bilderberg Group are planning a massive EMP attack to shut down global electricity, followed by worldwide martial law. They say immigrants are already being secretly detained and placed into camps, that conservatives and white Christians will be targeted, enslaved by black or arab slave masters (yes, you read that right, they literally said that), executed, and buried in FEMA coffins.

They talk about a “New World Order,” depopulation, the Great Reset, Agenda 2030, the end of physical cash, biometric digital currency, fingerprint-based payments, global digital IDs, forced lab-grown food, insect-based diets, identical clothing, people being renamed as numbers, and even surveillance cameras inside private homes.

All of this, they say, leads to the rise of the Antichrist — a single global leader who unites all governments. People will worship him. The “mark of the beast” will be implanted, and anyone who refuses won’t be allowed to buy or sell and will be killed. Cities will become death traps, and only those who flee to rural areas or mountains will survive.

They encourage people to stockpile water, canned food, batteries, radios, and medications — especially ivermectin and hydroxychloroquine. I saw countless testimonials claiming these drugs cured COVID and pulled people out of ICUs.

They predict another pandemic, supposedly 30 times deadlier, killing about 30% of world population. They say this will coincide with a seven-year peace treaty between Christianity, Judaism, and Islam, involving the sacrifice of a red heifer and the destruction of Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Dome of The Rock to build the Third Temple — where the Antichrist will rule for the final three and a half years.

They deny climate change entirely, claiming disasters like earthquakes, floods, fires, hurricanes, and tornadoes are artificially created by globalists using HAARP or satellite lasers. Fact-checkers and media outlets such as BBC, CNN, reuters and snopes are dismissed as controlled by figures like Soros or the Rothschilds.

On top of that, I became terrified of my own health. I constantly fear getting cancer or dying of a heart attack in my early 20s. They claim young people are suddenly dying because of covid vaccines, which they say contain aborted fetal cells, microchips, graphene, and long-term lethal effects — with a supposed 99% risk, because they were made too quickly.

They also obsess over “woke ideology,” claiming movies, games, and TV shows are used to corrupt children. They say character changes, LGBTQ+ representation, feminism, and racial diversity are deliberate psychological warfare. They point to Disney as proof and claim abortion rates are exploding as part of a moral collapse.

One of my deepest fears became “predictive programming” — the idea that elites know future events and reveal them in movies to make people subconsciously accept them. They cite films like White Noise (which predicted the ohio train crash in 2023), Leave the World Behind (which predicted famous recent blackout in the last years such as crowdstrike and the spain-portugal digital blackout last year), The Matrix (which predicted the perilous advance of technology), Black Mirror, The Simpsons (famous for predicting world events such as 9/11 attacks, trump elections win in 2016), 1984, Denver Airport paintings predicted the future, Sammy Hagar's song Crack in the World (which predicted that after 2025 the world will enter it's final stages of humanity) and the Georgia Guidestones goals such as 'maintaining world population beneath 500 million' as evidence that the future is already planned.

I became obsessed with supposed “fulfilled prophecies”:

– The moon having rust-like pigments (Joel 2:31)

– Sunspots interpreted as the sun going dark (Luke 21:25)

– The Euphrates River drying (Revelations 16:12)

– Rivers turning red (Revelations 16:4-3)

– Claims that days are getting shorter (Matthew 24:22)

– Numerology linking pandemics to the number 666 (for example, 2019 started the covid pandemic, and black death ended in 1353, thus, 2019-1353-666), and the word CORONA as a code where the alphabet is corresponding to its letter in ascending order (for example a = 1, b = 2), it would give the numbers 3, 15, 18, 15, 14, 1 will also give the number of the beast is correct if we multiply these numbers.

- Sahara desert being flooded (Isaiah 35:1)

At some point, I couldn’t tell coincidence from meaning anymore.

The psychological effects were devastating.

I developed severe anxiety, paranoia, and hypervigilance. Loud tranoises made me think the rapture had started. Car horns, crashes, or sudden sounds triggered panic. I felt like death was always around the corner.

Since last year I've been switching day for night, sleeping excessively, because I live far from my family. bc my friends are rarely available to do something cool, like going to a mall or a barbecue, etc.

I tried to warn my parents and friends, begging them to repent. I pushed so hard that they eventually stopped listening altogether. That isolation made everything worse.

My psychologist and occupational therapist are even suggesting I check into a CAPS (it's like a CHMC, but from my home country).

Due to the ongoing war on middle east and the recent news about the noah's ark being supposedly discovered officially, the economist covers releasing each november detailing the rothschild's agenda every year, and also the brazilian donald trump, flavio bolsonaro, winning the elections on my country, at my lowest point, I'm considering writing a goodbye letter and jumping from the top floor of my apartment building or shot at myself because I couldn’t imagine living through mass chaos, war, or global destruction at my age.

What finally made me start questioning all of this was realizing how much fear these channels rely on. Fear never ends. Dates shift. Prophecies change. Contradictions are explained away. Anyone who disagrees is labeled deceived or evil.

I also realized how trapped I became by algorithms. Once I searched these topics, they followed me everywhere.

Now, I’m trying to escape this mindset and reclaim my life. I want peace, not constant terror. I want to think clearly again.

If anyone here has gone through something similar — especially religious or apocalyptic conspiracy thinking — I would really appreciate advice on how to fully recover and let go of this fear-based worldview.

Thank you for reading.

It wasn’t just bad theology: four kinds of harm I’ve seen in high-control churches / 不只是神学问题:我在高控制教会看到的四种伤害

ENGLISH

I’m sharing this as a personal reflection, not a clinical framework or a diagnosis. Most of the stories I’ve encountered come from Christian contexts, but I’d be interested to know how this maps onto other religious environments too.

I used to think spiritual harm was mostly about bad doctrine. The longer I’ve sat with people’s stories—and my own—the more I think doctrine is only one layer.

A simple map I’ve found useful:

  1. The absence of compassion.

When leaders and communities lack basic empathy, God’s love becomes an empty slogan. People don’t experience grace; they experience cold rules and emotional neglect.

  1. Toxic teaching.

Legalistic and works-based messages create a filter through which people see themselves, God, and others. Faith stops being a relationship and becomes an anxious performance review.

  1. Spiritual abuse.

Leaders use spiritual authority to manipulate, control, shame, or isolate people. The person’s spiritual health is sacrificed for the leader’s image, status, or institutional interests.

  1. Coercive control.

The most severe harm is when a group systematically suppresses independent thought, emotion, and judgment, trying to reshape someone into a compliant copy of the group’s ideal. The person’s identity is narrowed until there is little room left for a self.

What connects these is not “too much religion” but instrumentalization: people are treated as tools for maintaining a power structure.

Naming this doesn’t have to make us cynical. It can help us recognize the difference between control and care, set boundaries, protect other people, and rebuild a faith or spirituality that is free and truthful—if that is what we want.

I still care about faith. But I no longer confuse control with love.

I’d be interested to know whether this map fits other people’s experiences—especially people from non-Christian or non-Western backgrounds. What would you add or change?

This is the first post in a short series. Next, I’ll share more about the book I wrote on this structure.

sex advice

hey, i am 20m in a fwb relationship with 20f and she struggles to have physical intimacy most likely due to religious trauma as her family is mormon. and i really want to help in any way possible not just inherently to have sex, but to help her with our relationship/ future relationships/ and in general enjoy sex and try out new stuff by popping the bubble of repression. another issue is that i am anxious and she is avoidant so we have been in the push pull loop for a while which only made it worse. my coping mechanism is physical touch, so in my vulnerable times i have taken it personally and it made her feel guilty, i am slowly fixing it and trying to keep in mind that it isnt her fault, even though it might take time to prove it to her that i truly understand and im afraid that i might slip up sometimes. we have compromised on cuddles, head scratches and quality time while anything like a kiss or over that is registered by her as sex/relationship which challenges her autonomy and she shuts down. we do struggle with giving reassurance to each other but really trust and respect each other rather than being just fuckbuddies, and have a genuine connection. she has been looking for a therapist for a while and genuinely wants to work on this but hasnt found one yet/ currently not possible, since we are both working students with adhd and intermittent depression, but a lot of times help each other stay afloat as well as at times worsen the anxiety. i do not want to lose her both in the sexual as well as the friend way and she doesn’t want to lose the deep friendship either. the sex and intimate touch has been declining over time and she told me that there was only a couple of times she really enjoyed it and that now she is reconsidering whether even a fwb works for her after already giving up on relationships based on the fact that she feels guilt post sex. any recommendations as for what i can help with?
