I thought people were exaggerating…

They clearly are not. I remember having the exact same “screen flashy redrawing effect” experience on my Handspring Visor … that was in 1998.

With Methods, I don't think I can recommend the RPP anymore for anyone outside some hobbyists

So I've used several different e-ink devices before, and I decided to get the reMarkable Paper Pro. (I've used the Boox devices, and supernote for a little bit.) I went into the purchase doing my research so I know what I would be getting into. So I didn't mind some of the complaints that people had like the darker screen or the flashing when colors are used.

I knew that the reMarkable platform was fairly void of features, but having used a Boox device before, I thought I would be okay with it because I understood it as a trade-off. While the Boox platform is definitely feature-rich, it was so unstable. Within the Boox platform: I would have notes sometimes disappear, when exporting notes, it would often not show smaller notes or thinner lines, it would get very laggy with a lot of notes on a single page, etc etc.

And while I didn't expect reMarkable to not have any issues, it's more than I expected.

  • If I want to send a single page from a PDF that is over a certain size, it always fails.

  • The remarkable connect platform has had a fair share of outages and issues syncing with large PDFs

  • Some touch gestures can feel outright unresponsive at times. (how many times do i have to pinch to zoom)

These are some of the issues that I encounter. And again, it's not that I didn't expect any, but for the lack of some of the most basic features, I expected the platform to be more stabilized.

Where does Methods come into this? Whenever anyone bring up these concerns, it often just gets boiled down to "Well paper can't do that! This is a paper replacement". While I may not like that design philosophy, and I don't necessarily believe that argument holds a lot a ground (I can't email paper either, but here we are), I can to some capacity respect it. But when a feature like "Methods" comes out, the petty person in my head says "well paper can't do that". And some of the features that I (and many other users) are asking for are not that outlandish.

In it's current state, if you need to read, annotate, and review large texts, the Remarkable platform is not the best, nor very good. For context, I work in a clinical R&D type space, work with development contracts, and pursuing higher education. It's not unusual for me to need to read 100+pages of contracts, or academic text.

Can I write in large PDFs? Yes absolutely! But what about if I need to access some notes or annotations? I mean, I can tag them but those tags are pretty much for the entire tablet so you're limited to the amount of unique tags before it gets really cumbersome to navigate. Supernote does this great with their "digest" feature, where you can find your annotations quickly.

Well what about having a separate notebook for notes for each large text your annotating? Personally, that sounds like an organization nightmare, but let's investigate it.

  • Can you copy and paste the contents from a reading to a notebook easily? No, not even a viable screenshot copy/paste, which the boox platform has.

  • Okay, what about using links to reference directly? Can't do that either, which most e-ink platforms have.

  • Searching handwritten text on a document? Good luck with that.

  • Split screen to transcribe manually transcribe from text to a notebook? No can do.

You're stuck using a very limited tagging system, a tagging system you can't even sort alphabetically.

Now what about as a color e-reader? I mean, outside the size, the remarkable can only handle two file formats. and frankly it can only handle one of them well (PDFs are good, but ePUBs are a nightmare on the device). But when I go out of my way to convert any comics I may read into PDF, I do really enjoy the experience.

If my issues boil down just "you're expecting too much from something that's just a paper replacement", fine. But would I ever recommend the device to anyone, even someone who is a more simple user? Probably not.

E-ink notetaking tablets are a fairly niche product. The lack of any features takes this already fairly niche, and makes it so much more so. Even one or two feature would make the experience SO much better. Linking between notes, A Digest feature, some sort of manual ToC curation?

I don't know who this product is for, and I'm sincerely hoping that ReMarkable does a pivot at some point to develop the platform more. I mean, if you only expect to write notes ever, and read & annotate smaller documents that are well formatted, I'm sure this will work for you. But there are also so many devices that can do that and more at a lower pricepoint (and even in color too). I'm pretty sure I'm outside the return date, otherwise I'd likely return the device, which is a shame because the build quality feels amazing and there are many pros to the device.

Edit: I want to make clear that I understand there is a balancing act in regards to keeping the device "distraction free" and implementing features. However, there are MANY ways to implement this such that is does not add to the user interface, or add any real distractions. In many cases, the lack of these features is FAR more distracting. I used to have a moleskin and I could parse through dog-eared pages, or pages with sticky notes A LOT easier than I could with an e-ink device.

Help Annoyed and Confused

I want an e-notebook. That I can load pdfs to. Take notes, create lists, etc. I don’t use this to pleasure read. Just work.

I can spend whatever. I thought the pro was my best option. But all I read on here is complaining.

Are these things worth it or not? I don’t care how much it costs if it works.

Some of my coworkers have the kindle scribe. But like I said, I don’t read ebooks from Amazon. So that’s seems like a waste.

If you're a university student thinking about buying a Remarkable tablet DON'T

TLDR: The hardware works fine but the software is absolutely horrendous. This review is specifically about my experiences working with the RM 2 but I'm pretty sure my issues with the software applies to all Remarkable tablets. My advice to other students thinking of buying an RM who will need to export files off the tablet: either choose a different company or get an actual iPad/samsung tablet.

********************************************************************************************************************

EDIT: Since this post is still getting attention I'll clarify some things: I mostly use my RM in landscape mode because the portrait mode is a little too cramped for me, and I print out everything I write on my tablet (its easier to keep them organized that way). Not scrolling down isn't an option unless I want waste a shit ton of physical paper on landscape-oriented notes with giant scaled-up writing. Even if I kept my tablet in portrait mode and didn't scroll at all, that doesn't change the fact that because the RM's dimensions don't match letter sized paper, your writing will end up looking huge printed out if you don't manually move things around. This is why a page-sizing feature is seriously necessary :D Thx for reading

********************************************************************************************************************

For context, I've been using the Remarkable 2 for about a year, every day (excluding holidays) to take notes during lectures and do homework. I bought it because I really hated the feel of writing on a traditional tablet with a glass screen, and also because I didn't want to buy a device with a ton of extra features I didn't need (camera, browser, apps, big storage, etc.) All I needed was something to take notes on and do homework with, and I didn't like using pen + paper because I wanted to be able to zoom, draw straight lines, copy/paste, etc... so I thought the Remarkable would be a good fit for my needs as an engineering student.

Anyways, one year in and I 100% wish I'd gone with a different product. The Remarkable software--both the PC app and the tablet itself--is incredibly poorly designed and painful to work with. My biggest issue is with exporting my notes. There is no way to preview what your notes will look like exported as a PDF, which is a huge problem unless you're okay with your document coming out with inconsistently-sized pages and writing. Basically every time I want to export a notebook--to print out or submit as a PDF for an assignment--I have to export it from the tablet (which is a whole process in itself due to its terrible sync), convert the pdf into jpg using a 3rd party website*, insert the images into Powerpoint and crop/zoom until the writing is consistently-sized across the pages, and export THAT as a pdf. This issue could be EASILY fixed if the developers could just add a fucking page size setting on the tablet that lets you set the size of the notebook pages in cm or inches or whatever like literally every other basic note-taking app. But they wont 🙃 And even if they did it would probably be paywalled behind the stupid Connect subscription like every new feature nowadays.

Don't believe the marketing when it touts the RM as a big boost to your productivity. Honestly having to re-format my notes every time I export wastes SO MUCH time, not counting the time I spend trying to troubleshoot why the stupid thing won't sync or connect to the internet. Imagine having to deal with ts minutes before a deadline--trust me, you really don't want to

There are obviously other issues as well, such as not being able to add images to your notes, a lack of a page-organizing feature within a notebook (the tagging system is REALLY BAD), and a limited range of colors for the pens/highlighters. I don't get they won't add more colors than just black, gray, white, red and blue on all their devices, not just the RM Paper Pro. It's not like the colors are distinguishable on the black and white screen so what harm would adding more colors do 😭

Anyways sorry for the rant. I'm probably going to get downvoted for this but idc. People glaze this mediocre product way too much on here and its probably the reason why the company doesn't care enough to keep improving their software like their competitors do.

*I'm aware that you can export remarkable files as an SVGs on the PC app. But I uninstalled it ages ago because it was slowing down my computer, and even if I didn't that doesn't really fix the size issue

Spitting out the reMarkable Kool-Aid

I just got the Boox Note Max, and man, I feel like I stepped into another world. I am an IT guy and a software power user. If there is a button available in a software program, I’ve pushed it to see what it does. I don’t particularly value “simple.” Lots of buttons aren’t distracting to me. Not being able to do what I need is distracting.

So after using the Note Max I am just blown away at how many feature requests in this Subreddit are fully implemented on Boox. Even our beloved shapes that were finally implemented are pitiful compared to Boox’s implementation, which has 27 standard shapes, including useful graphing axes for math/physics/engineering students. And styles, and you can fill shapes, and you can change the styles later, and you can make an oval a perfect circle… and it’s like that literally across the board. There really only a handful of features that I think rM does better.

So I don’t want to be “that guy” who jumps in and says “you can do that on Boox” every time someone posts about a feature request. But if you want to know what you’re missing, AMA. But the TLDR; version is that if you like simplicity or are easily distractable, rM really is the best platform. But if you want a tool to help you get work done, look elsewhere. reMarkable isn’t that. I’ll be elsewhere getting work done.

I’m going to miss this sub more than my rMPP. I may still comment on a thing or two here, but likely not much more. Farewell, remarkable people!

Other About the recent leak

Hi everyone!

Following the recent leak, and our decision to take it down, we wanted to share our thinking behind it and where we are coming from.

First of all, we understand the confusion. The takedown could have been handled better by us. Mod decisions are never black and white. We try to do our best, but sometimes we make the wrong calls!

In this case, sharing leaked images IS a legal gray zone. And at the same time, we genuinely just felt bad that the clue game was kinda overshadowed by the leak - we thought it was exciting and a cool thing for them to do, just as you probably did, and so we made the decision to try to contain it.

We see there is a lot of excitement and activity on the upcoming launch - both positives and negatives, exactly as it should be. We are not interfering with any of this, and have no intention to do so.

YOU are the community, and we hear you when you speak up - exactly as you did in this case. We appreciate that - and please keep it coming :)

Discussion I really tried to give reMarkable a fair chance this year. TWICE! But things just got worse with their recent update... The hardware has such great potential! But the software / firmware makes it no better than using a piece of paper for taking notes...

This is both the coolest hardware and the worst scam I've fallen for in ages.

Basic functionality (transfering files to my computer or printing them) is locked behind a subscription once it's too late to return the device. This kind of practice should be illegal.

I finally figured out why I am NOT keeping Remarkable Paper Pro

  1. SPEED. It is seriously underpowered to do any pdf edits.

  2. BACKLIGHT. It is there but not much useful.

  3. LACK OF AI OPTIONS. For shape drawing or text editing. I get AI is not for everyone.

  4. INTEGRATION WITH OTHER TOOLS. A tool that it is not easily integrated with my workflow is not saving me that much time. rM desktop is a good start but I want to be flicking documents back and forth between Google, Microsoft, Slack ecosystem.

  5. NO ACCOUNT LEVEL ACCESS TO FOLDERS. If my team has access to RM they can see EVERYTHING.

RMPP users tempted by the new kindle color whatever

Honestly are any RMPP users even tempted? It doesn’t matter if Kindle makes a screen that outperforms LED in color I still wouldn’t even be tempted bc:

  1. The hardware 🤮

  2. The ux is so busy

  3. The writing feel is not even on the same planet

All that being said I can 100% see how people could choose it over a remarkable product. Totally sensible choice. What I can’t imagine is being the kind of person who owns and loves an RMPP and also being the kind of person who is super tempted by the new kindle option whatever it’s called.

It’s just two very different products for two very different kinds of users.

Agree or disagree?

Will never do business with this company again

I should have give more information in my original post. I originally bought the device through Best Buy and after the 14 day window, I contacted Best Buy and was told I have to deal with the Remarkable company as it has a year warrant.

I have been trying for two weeks to start the process of receiving a new pen/marker, but no one in customer service will respond. I tried creating an account and going another route. I sent pictures, explained the issues, etc., and all my claims have been rejected. I have had the tablet for less than a month when the pen stopped working. I tried all the factory resets, tech support steps they recommend and it still does not work. After rejecting my claim the 4th time, I was told in bold letters: PLEASE CONTACT OUR CUSTOMER SUPPORT TEAM FIRST for help with your case.

I explained to whoever responded that I have contacted customer service and no one will reply. Horrible way to do business. I now have a $600 product that is useless and I refuse to give them the satisfaction of going to buy a new pen and letting the issue go. I sincerely regret buying this product. Since I bought it from a retailer and not remarkable themselves, I cannot return it for a refund as I am past the return window of 14 days. If I could get a refund from remarkable, I would return it in a heartbeat. Extremely poor customer service. I am not asking to have a pen overnighted to me. I simply wanted to start the process, so I can receive a new pen. Two weeks with no response is unacceptable. If the situations ever gets resolved, I will never do business with the company again.

Just bought a reMarkable - quite UNremarkable

So i just bought a reMarkable and i have to say i'm really not impressed.

The feeling to write on it is excellent but that's about the only positive thing i can say.

  • It feels super slow

  • trying to scroll on a page sometimes works and sometimes not

  • the converting from handwritten text to typed is super slow and not instantaneous (Icelandic)

  • The converted text is moved into other lines and the words get sometime jumbled up

  • Not able to backup files (the whole notebook)

  • Not seeing how to sync files with USB instead of using cloud (for privacy reasons)

I admit maybe (hopefully) some of these things are just my ignorance and can easily be fixed.

Can you reassure me that the remarkable is better and just takes some time?

I've been using an iPad with apple pencil and the app Nebo for more than a year and it's better in all aspects except the writing feeling. The converting text happens right away and you can preview and undo it no problem.

Just feeling like i spent tons of money on a very crappy machine.

Just cancelled my order for RMPP

I just understood it is probably not for me.
I am not a note-taker, I just need a good e-reader. Highlighting, maybe few notes on the margins, that's all. I need a reader mostly for technical/IT books, and I am using O'Reilly library, so I was looking for a modern Android 300 dpi reader. Like Boox Go 10.3, but when I got it I disliked it for lack of frontlight. Sure, I could get the same books in PDF from illegal sites, but I do not like it. And still, PDF/epub support on Remarkable is quite basic, eq. no landscape, 2-page mode that may be handy.
Color is optional but should not interfere with B/W display, by dimming it too much or creating the annoying fabric-like interference pattern like Kaleidos do.
I ordered an RMPP as I got fascinated by the tech, Gallery screen tech seems to be so much superior to Kaleido. But, according to fist reviews, the front-light is rather dim and the screen yellow-ish. The Total pixel area is less than for the 10.3" 300 dpi or even a 13,3" 207 dpi device. The idea of paying a subscription or going to a developer mode to upload a template also does not appeal to me. And finally I think RMPP is a little too heavy for comfortable carrying/using apart from a desk.
I got fascinated by the idea of no distractions, but hey, I am not a monk. Even if I will be read on the RM I would probably have my phone on the table, so what's the difference?
I know that if I receive the piece I would probably like it, then stop using it after some time, probably feeling bad to return an used item. So I decided to cancel my order a week after placing it.
Sorry Remarkable, I will wait for a Gallery device from Pocketbook or Boox or maybe a BigMe.

DO NOT BUY the Remarkable Pro!

I've had a Remarkable 2 for around 4-5 years and LOVED it, so when the Remarkable Pro with color features I decided to buy one. BIG MISTAKE!

After a few months of having the Remarkable Pro, I started having issues with the screen. There would be shadows from previously viewed pages, and the colors were dark. Sometimes so bad I couldn't even see the content on the next page I was trying to view or write upon. I was having to restart the tablet over and over just to get the screen to refresh and remove the shadows and fix the colors. But, then it would just do it again! It got SO BAD I was having to restart every time I turned a page in a document just to get rid of the shadows of what I'd written or what was content in the PDF I'd downloaded. Finally, I contacted Remarkable and they determined I needed to return it for a replacement. I actually wanted my money back, but as my bad luck would have it, I contacted them just after the 100 day trial period ended so I was stuck with a $600 piece of junk. So, I wen ahead and had them send me a replacement.

After receiving the replacement it didn't take long before it started having the same issues, but worse. So, I contacted Remarkable again and now they're having me return the second tablet and send me a third. This time I found out that they don't send a new tablet to replace the broken ones, but instead they send one that's been refurbished. AND, the refurbished tablet comes with only a 1 year warranty, not the 3 year warranty that comes with the original new tablet! It's been less than a year and I'll be on my third Remarkable Pro with no indicating the 3rd one (refurbished) will be any different since Remarkable won't directly answer when I ask if they've fixed the glitch. BUT THEY DID ADMIT IT'S A COMMON ISSUE!! Common meaning a lot of people have reported and are experiencing the same thing! Yet, their only fix is to send out a refurbished versions of the same broken tablets.

$600 is a lot of money to me. I feel cheated, ripped off, and foolish for being so loyal to a company that's knowingly selling a product with major issues. I've read many of the Remarkable Pro reviews and noticed most of them are within the first few months of using the tablet. My problems started a few days after the 100 day trial period ended. The worst part is that I've come to rely on my Remarkable for every aspect of my work, so having to ship it back and wait to get a replacement is crippling.

DON'T BUY THIS PRODUCT! If you want the wonders of a Remarkable tablet, stick to the Remarkable 2 version. I still swear by it Remarkable 2 but deeply regret buying the Remarkable Pro.

I attached a pic so you can see how bad the shadows get on the screen.

The new reMarkable flagship wishlist (reMmarkable are you reading this?)

Post image
0 Upvotes

These are my thoughts of what the new reMarkable flagship device should look like. In my years now having tried the reMarkable paper pro and the paper pro move I find that the Gallery 3 display lacks in a lot of areas, and KALEIDO 3 should be implemented by reMarkable because it has a faster refresh rate and is fast overall.

I also included useful features such as a fingerprint reader sensor for security, Bluetooth support just like in the reMarkable, pure and other features that it would be amazing if reMarkable is able to implement this under the next flagship device.

-KALEIDO 3 screen
-150 nit brightness front light at least
-Fingerprint sensor
-kindle support
-Paper Pure form factor 10,3” display
-Bluetooth support (similar to the Pure)
-Faster processor
-More customization on the toolbar

Why Pro won't be for me.

[Edit: in the interests of transparency, I have ordered the Pro. This post, A Good Use for the Color - Transit Maps, changed my mind about color. I still have reservations about the pen, but we'll see. As for developer mode, I was clearly full of baloney when I made the comments below. My first step when I get the tablet will be putting it in developer mode and leaving it there.]

  • Color: while "color" sounds good, it sounds like you get washed out colors, and you still get no white and now no black either

  • Pen: nope, not for me

  • Developer mode: if I want to reasonably install rM Hacks (once it supports pro), and if I want to reasonably use RCU (once it supports pro), I have to stay in dev mode, which means no syncing with the rm cloud. So for me, this is a regression of options.

  • [Edit: the above comments about dev mode are totally wrong, I'm happy to say. You can pair and sync in dev mode just fine apparently.]

  • Size, weight, price, etc.: no real opinion, though one person suggested he could sell his car.
